Occasional Digest - a story for you

A CRAFTY woman decided to take matters into her own hands and turn her drab backyard into a fab hangout spot.

She did whatever she wanted from her flower arrangement in her garden that was off the cuff to mowing her lawn.

Kylie Katich (@kyliekatich) is building her dream home one space at a time.

She decided to embark on a renovation project in her backyard and documented the progress she made on day two in a TikTok video.

The entire construction project took six days to complete and create her dream yard.

The mom kept everything simple on the first day and did all of her weeding and mowing for the first time by herself.

On the second day of manual labor, she said “goodbye” to the colorless base in the outdoor area and decided to add flowers, even though she knew nothing about planting them.

She went to her local Home Depot and picked up some pretty flowers to “spice things up.”

In another TikTok video, Kylie broke down the costs associated with such a heavy-duty project.

She spent $323 on flowers and $10 on staples to hide her gardening hose.

She expected that some would come back and others won’t but at least they looked nice.

“All your perennials will come back next year and your annuals will produce seeds so you can replant them next year for FREE,” a woman commented.

“The layout was created from no thoughts, just vibes, but some of the flowers spread, so I spaced them out according to that,” she explained.

After previously learning how easy it was to mow her lawn and remove weeds, she felt “extremely confident” about planting.

That didn’t last long for her.

Little did she know that dirt hadn’t been touched in practically forever, and it took “every muscle in her body” to dig a six-inch hole for each individual flower.

“I had to cut into this thick a*s tarp. Dig. Dig. Dig. Add water. Create mud soup,” she added.

She “aggressively” dug into the group with two tools to get the task done.

Kylie worked until sundown and could see a noticeable difference immediately.

Toward the end of the video, she showed a before and after of her backyard garden and shared her excitement for when they are in full bloom.

The flowers are going to “grow and spread” and bring so much color to her backyard.

She separated them in set rows but she admitted that the garden needed more greenery, so she planned on making a vegetable garden the next day.

The added plants and soil cost her $240 and a new garden bed cost $100.

“Add some mulch and it will look soooo nice. It’s so satisfying,” a viewer suggested.

She joked in the video caption that it took her “19284738 hours.”

On day four, she decided to do more gardening work and make her large flower pots.

She documented in a video how she upgraded the backyard with more flowers and a DIY playhouse she built for her daughter.

  2. Dollar Tree sells four packs of seeds for $1.25.
  3. Try a vertical planter like Amazon’s Mr. Stacky 5 Tier Stackable Planter, $35 to make more use of a small space.
  4. Use netting like the Garden Netting Pest Barrier, $8, from Amazon to keep away bugs that eat your vegetables.
  5. Try sacrificial planting to reduce the use of pesticides and keep pests away from your garden. Deliberately growing certain plants to attract agricultural pests can keep them away from the plants you want to protect. Examples include marigolds, lavender, catnip, and chives.
  6. For pesky weeds in your garden, the Grampa’s Weeder – The Original Stand-Up Weed Puller Tool with Long Handles, $45, from Amazon is a helpful tool you can use without having to bend over.

Several people commented how “invested” they were in the backyard series and couldn’t wait for the finished product.

The average costs associated with landscaping is typically between $3,000 to $13,000.

Kylie spent a total of $1,172.
