Vera Farmiga as Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring: Last RitesCredit: PA
FOR over a decade, the Conjuring franchise has been scaring us silly with its “true stories”.
But this will be the final haunted hurrah from parapsychologists Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson).
The married couple are as devoted to keeping bad spirits at bay as they are each other.
The film begins with a flashback to 1964, where a haunted mirror causes Lorraine to go into early labour.
The birth is traumatic and the demon that wants to get her young baby, Judy, almost wins, with the tot being stillborn.
Evil presence
But after begging the Lord to make the baby breathe, Lorraine wins that battle and we see the loving family grow up with happiness around them.
All while ghostbusting, of course.
But demons don’t rest and Judy, who has visions like her mum, often feels that she is being watched.
Fast-forward to 1986 and the Warrens are retired due to Ed having a heart condition.
But that pesky mirror turns up again, this time in the family home of the Smurls in Pennsylvania.
There are some seriously creepy goings-on and this is a demon not to be messed with. The Smurls have been so violently attacked by a powerful evil presence that they all live in terror.
Spooky Rhode Island home that inspired movie The Conjuring hits market for $1.2million after owners see ‘ghosts’ inside
As usual in these films, what you don’t see is far more terrifying than what you do.
Every usual horror trope is thrown out with a vengeance. But hey, if it ain’t broke. . .
And it certainly feels like it’s not, as my palms grew clammy and heart rate shot up countless times.
The performances by Farmiga and Wilson are as extraordinary as always, bringing believable calm to the roles.
The climax of the supernatural events includes daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson) and her boyfriend Tony (Brit actor Ben Hardy), are both tense and unsettling.
Directed by Michael Chaves, who was also the director for the three previous entries in the franchise, the film has a hand-held camera effect that tunes into the 1980s feel very well indeed.
There’s also a nice rounding off at the end with some familiar faces that superfans will appreciate.
A spine-tingling finale to a series of films that will likely haunt generations of fans to come.

Will Poulter as Lee and Daisy Edgar-Jones as MurielCredit: PA
THIS odd beast of a film from Daniel Minahan is adapted from Shannon Pufahl’s 2019 novel.
It opens with Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her soon-to-be husband, Lee (Will Poulter), chasing the Californian dream after his return from the Korean War.
Their plans for a fresh start are almost derailed by the arrival of Lee’s magnetic younger brother, Julius (Jacob Elordi), who departs for Las Vegas the next day.
There, Julius finds work in a casino and falls into a secret romance with his charismatic coworker, Henry (Diego Calva).
Back in California, Muriel begins her own double life, gambling at racetracks and discovering an unexpected passion with her neighbour, Sandra (Sasha Calle).
On paper, this is rich material, but on screen, Minahan never quite delivers the goods.
The film certainly looks the part – Andre Chemetoff’s cinematography bathes everything in a golden haze – but beneath the gloss there isn’t enough here to truly hold it together.
In the end, On Swift Horses aspires to be a sweeping saga in the vein of East Of Eden, but it never gets out of a slow trot.
All style, with little substance.

The Courageous is an honest portrait of survival, love, and dignity
JASMIN GORDON’S debut feature film is an honest portrait of survival, love, and dignity.
Set against the beautiful landscape of Switzerland’s Valais region, it follows Jule (Ophelia Kolb), a rebellious single mother of three who refuses to give up on her family despite poverty, past mistakes and the indifference of the welfare system.
Kolb, best known for the hugely popular series, Call My Agent!, gives a career-defining performance. She captures Jule’s contradictions with remarkable depth.
Gordon directs with sensitivity, as she blends social realism with poetic imagery in a film that never feels needlessly moralising.
Her film never resorts to cliché or sentimentality; instead, it shines a light on the often invisible battles of the working poor in a modern Swiss society where destitution is often a taboo subject.
This is a powerful, heartfelt drama about love, resilience, and the complexity of being a flawed human.
Gordon’s sensitive direction and Kolb’s mesmerising performance combine to create a film that is both socially aware and profoundly moving.
It may be her first ever feature, but Gordon has made a film that feels both mature and hugely engaging.

A spokesperson for the Betting and Gaming Council said: “Hiking gambling taxes would backfire spectacularly.
“Far from boosting the Treasury, it will push punters towards the unsafe black market, which pays no tax, backs no sport and has zero standards.”
They add that it would shrink the legal market and damage sport.
The industry says it already pays £4 billion in taxes, supports 109,000 jobs and pumps £6.8 billion into the economy.
Ex-PM Gordon Brown has called for an increase on gambling taxes to help take children out of poverty.

The Uptown Funk hitmaker is celebrating the landmark birthday today but is opting for a low-key family occasion instead of a blow-out bash.
Mark, who is gearing up to release his book Night People on September 16, explained: “I feel like because my whole life has been a party, not necessarily a party for me, but DJing a party for others and being in the party and all that s***, I have no desire to.
“Everybody’s like, ‘You’ve gotta do something big!’
“And my 40th, I kind of went all out.
“I had this big party with 60 friends or maybe more in the countryside.
“We all got on a tour bus and I DJ’d at Festival No6 in Wales.
“And then it was just three days of partying.”
But things are different for Mark these days, after he settled down and became a dad to two daughters.
He added: “Now I have absolutely no desire to do that.

CELINE DION was forced to cancel her appearance during the final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Switzerland after struggling with her health.
The My Heart Will Go On singer had kept the surprise appearance under wraps.
But it ended up being one of music’s worst-kept secrets, with Eurovision presenter Graham Norton referencing a possible appearance live on air.
Celine, who has stiff person syndrome, had been due to perform Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi, the song she won the competition with for Switzerland in 1988.
French newspaper Le Parisien has now claimed Celine was in Basel for the event but suffered a medical episode and was forced to cancel her performance.
The revelation comes after her Prime Video documentary last year, in which she talked about living with stiff person syndrome, which is a neurological disorder that causes muscle stiffness and cramps.
She was diagnosed with the rare disease in 2022 and has shared her experience to raise awareness.
Celine said: “I barely could walk at one point and I was missing very much living.
“My kids started to notice.
“I was like, ‘OK, they already lost a parent. I don’t want them to be scared’.
“I let them know, ‘You lost your dad, but Mum has a condition and it’s different. I’m not going to die. It’s something that I’m going to learn to live with.’”

It was the fourth time Flemyng had been caught speeding in the past year.
He already had 12 points on his licence but had not been banned because of a justice system administrative error.
The actor admitted speeding near his home in Clapham, South West London, on December 5.
He was banned for six months and fined £775.
He told Lavender Hill JPs: “I don’t want to waste the court’s time. I accept what has happened.”
Asked whether he wanted to claim exceptional hardship, the actor, wearing a black suit, said: “Well, my work and what I do for a living, and my charity work, all depend on me driving.
“Maybe I should have thought about that before I drove 24mph in a 20mph zone.”
In 2009, the actor joined the cast of the ITVscience fiction cult drama series Primeval during its third series, as maverick ex-policeman Danny Quinn and he reprised the role in 2011.
He has been married to actress and producer Elly Fairman since 2007, best known for Blitz, and has also starred in BBC drama series Casualty.

WRAPPED around the hoover, blocking the plughole and stuck on the shower wall – it feels like hair gets everywhere.
It’s normal to lose hair every day, but sometimes, the large clump in your hairbrush can feel worrying. But what is ‘normal’, and what could be causing your locks to fall out faster? We reveal the hidden health concerns, and how to fix them to stop the shed.

Eva Proudman, founder of www.ukhairconsultants.com, consultant trichologist and Fellow of the Institute of Trichologists UK, tells Sun Health: “Everyone is going to see some hair coming out of the head daily; this is part of the normal growing and shedding cycle.
“Around 50-150 hairs can be shed daily.
“If you wash every day, you will see less than if you leave it for three or four days, as the shed hair is held within the hair by a natural static charge that is broken when the hair is washed.”
While some hair loss is a natural part of getting older – for example, women tend to see thinning due to menopause – and genetic predisposition can lead to gradual thinning over time, any sudden changes warrant concern.
Eva, who sees many distressed patients in her clinics, says: “If you are noticing more hair in the brush, shower, on your clothes, or being picked up by your hoover, seek advice from a professional to identify and understand the cause.”
Our hair is not only part of our identity, but is “often said to be a reflection of your general health,” adds Eva.
“In many cases, these symptoms are linked to an underlying medical issue.”
From hormonal issues to autoimmune diseases, here are the causes worth considering…
Telogen effluvium can be triggered by several factors, from stress to viruses and inflammation, which disrupt the hair growth cycle.
7
Being iron deficient could be disrupting your hair growth cycleCredit: Getty
NHS GP reveals how she boosted her hair growth
Eva says: “Being deficient in iron and vitamin B12 can also cause fatigue, brain fog, aches and pains, and a general state of feeling unwell.
“This is especially true if you eat a limited diet, whether vegetarian, vegan or you are on GLP-1 ‘weight loss’ jabs, and exclude core food groups such as red meat and animal proteins.”
Trichologists use a blood test to ascertain stored levels before advising on dietary or supplementary changes.
“The results take time to show,” Eva notes. “It’s usually a minimum of four to six months.
“However, the relief as the hair shedding reduces also brings a reduction in stress and anxiety, which is supportive to both hair and general health.”
SLUGGISH GLAND
BOTH types of thyroid disease (overactive and underactive) affect the hair, says Eva.
She adds: “In my clinics, I see clients with excessive hair shedding, thinning and breakage that also present with other recognised signs and symptoms of thyroid disease.
7
The thyroid is a gland located in the neckCredit: Alamy
“It has an impact on female pattern hair loss (FPHL), whether it is hypothyroidism (underactive) or hyperthyroidism (overactive).” FPHL tends to affect the crown of the head.
An underactive thyroid can also cause brittle and fragile hair, while overactive can cause excessive shedding.
For the former, look out for symptoms such as “severe tiredness, weight gain and feeling cold”, says Eva, and for the latter, “you may find there’s weight loss, a feeling of ‘running on overdrive’, and poor sleep”.
The thyroid is a gland in the neck that produces two hormones (TSH and T4) vital for all the cells in the body to work efficiently.
Both types of thyroid disease, which can occur at any age, are treated with medication for life.
HORMONES GOING HAYWIRE
ONE in ten women have PCOS, a hormonal condition that causes the male hormones to be more dominant.
“PCOS is a very common condition in my clinics, particularly in younger ladies who see me due to hair thinning and loss, as well as a feeling of being able to see more scalp, with slow growth,” explains Eva.
7
PCOS, a hormonal condition which impacts one in ten women, could be the cause of hair thinning and lossCredit: Getty Images
Other signs and symptoms can include heavy and/or irregular periods, facial hair, weight gain, oily skin and scalp, and acne.
Eva says: “Insulin resistance or pre-diabetes is often seen in my clinics.
“But this is also a common standalone condition in the UK, causing the body to have an ineffective response to insulin.
“The increase of insulin in the bloodstream can stimulate the ovaries to produce more androgens, providing an environment that promotes thinning and shedding and an exacerbation of the FPHL.”
Eva adds: “This health condition should ideally be managed jointly between the trichologist and GP.
“Lifestyle changes definitely help; we work on diet and the uptake and storage of nutrients to give the correct levels for optimum hair health.”
Hair growth treatments, like Minoxidil, or Tricoactiv+, may also be used.
BODY’S BETRAYAL
IN the case of autoimmune conditions, the body attacks its own tissues, such as the hair follicles.
Frontal fibrosing alopecia is an autoimmune condition which sees the body attack the hair folliclesCredit: Getty
“This causes the hairline to recede with permanent loss, and so it’s important to get an early, accurate diagnosis as there are supportive treatments that can stabilise the condition to help to prevent further hair loss.”
FFA is a type of scarring autoimmune condition, meaning the hair will not grow back.
“It presents with a lack of follicular orifices, usually a smooth area of skin with a paler skin pigmentation,” says Eva.
Alopecia areata is a non-scarring autoimmune condition in which hair loss can come and go.
Eva says: “It causes patchy hair loss, usually in smooth circles. “In some cases, it develops into total hair loss on the scalp (alopecia totalis) or total hair loss all over the body (alopecia universalis).
“When the condition is active, you see clinical signs such as yellow dots on the scalp, black dots and exclamation hairs. When there are no signs like this, there can then be regrowth and recovery.
“Treatments for this type of condition range from scalp massage, stimulating oils, topical Minoxidil, topical steroids, steroid injections and JAK (Janus kinase) inhibitors.”
SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM
VIRUSES can cause hair and scalp issues, often a diffuse thinning, which is a uniform, widespread loss of density across the scalp.
This is a form of telogen effluvium – temporary hair loss that affects the hair growth cycle.
7
Covid could cause telogen effluvium – temporary hair lossCredit: Getty
Covid-19, for example, can potentially cause hair loss, though it might not appear until months later.
Eva says: “With a virus, it can feel like hair loss but may actually be a disruption to the growing and shedding cycle of the hair, called telogen effluvium.
“This condition can have multiple underlying causes and though alarming at first, it is generally short-lived in most circumstances.”
This type of hair loss tends to resolve on its own, but in more severe or prolonged cases, a doctor may recommend medications to support regrowth.
Eva says: “As with all hair-related problems, the sooner you seek professional advice and have an accurate diagnosis, the sooner you can start to treat and get the hair back to normal.
“Many of the products advertised online or across social media may not be relevant.
“Just because something says it works, doesn’t mean it does or will!
“The cost and stress of trying many different treatments can be avoided just by seeking the right advice.”
Emily, who plays Sarah Stratton, told the Radio Times: “I’m really proud of the Rivals gang because, throughout my life, I haven’t felt safe all the time, and we’re all so respectful of each other.
“We have to do a lot of sexual scenes and we’re very looked after — it’s a really positive thing.”
Emily, who is now engaged to materials scientist Dr Alistair Garner, launched her acting career 18 years ago with small parts in dramas including ITV’s Heartbeat.

Yesterday, ministers put a temporary halt on refugees bringing in partners and children.
Sir Keir also said he wanted to bring forward his 2029 deadline for closing asylum hotels because he “completely gets” the public’s anger.
But his positive slant was derailed by the news of the failure of the “one-in, one-out” deal with France’s Emmanuel Macron.
More than 100 people are understood to have been detained — with videos shared by No10 showing people being escorted by staff after arriving across the Channel.
Yet none has actually gone yet, officials confirmed.
The PM and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper had gone on the offensive yesterday after a summer of dismal headlines.
Speaking to BBC Radio Five, the PM said: “It’s a really serious issue. We have to have control of our borders, and I completely get it.
“I’m determined that whether it’s people crossing in the first place, people in asylum hotels, or it’s returning people, we absolutely have to deal with this.”
Pressed on when illegal migrant hotels will finally shut, Sir Keir replied: “We’ve said we’ll get rid of them by the end of the Parliament. I would like to bring that forward, I think it is a good challenge.”
Small boat crossings under Labour are on brink of hitting 50,000 – one illegal migrant every 11 mins since the election
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said accommodation for illegal migrants would be dealt with “not just by shifting individuals from hotels to other sites, but by driving down the numbers in supported accommodation overall”.
Hotels would be “reconfigured” to increase room-sharing and the test for accommodation would be “tightened”.
She said the Home Office would try to “identify alternative cheaper and more appropriate accommodation”.
He also wants to establish detention centres with compulsory deportations, even for women and children.
Sir Keir said: “The difference here is between an orderly sensible way of actually fixing a problem we inherited from the Tories or fanciful arrangements that are just not going to work.
“Nigel Farage and Reform are just the politics of grievance. They feed on grievance. They don’t want the problem solved because they’ve got no reason to exist if the problems are solved.”
The PM added that Mr Farage’s plan is “not fair to put forward to the public” because it is an idea that “just isn’t going to work”.
It came as Ms Cooper announced refugees will be banned from bringing their families to the UK as part of “radical” asylum reforms announced by the Home Secretary yesterday.

The Home Secretary vowed that new immigration rules will temporarily suspend new applications from dependents of refugees already in Britain.
She also said that the controversial Article 8 of the ECHR — which guarantees a right to family life — should be interpreted differently.
Around 20,000 people come to the UK on refugee family reunion visas per year, according to Home Office figures.
Ms Cooper told the House of Commons yesterday: “Our reforms will also address the overly complex system for family migration, including changes to the way Article 8 of the ECHR is interpreted.
“We should be clear that international law is important.
“But we also need the interpretation of international law to keep up with the realities and challenges of today’s world.”
‘Living in a parallel universe’
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp accused Ms Cooper of “living in a parallel universe”.
Labour’s own Graham Stringer said the measures “don’t really deal with the fact that many migrants are not coming from war-torn countries, they’re coming from France, which isn’t persecuting them”.
And Reform MP Lee Anderson said: “Starmer continues to open the floodgates for hundreds of illegals each day.”
The Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex, became a flash point for discontent this summer after two of its guests were charged with sexual offences.
Epping Forest District Council won a bid at the High Court to block migrants from being housed at the hotel.
But the Court of Appeal last week overturned the injunction after an Home Office appeal.
Lee Anderson added: “Starmer makes hollow claims while refusing to close Epping. Hypocrite.”
Carpenter Jimmy Hillard, 52, of Loughton, Essex, has been handed an eight-week suspended prison sentence by Chelmsford JPs after admitting assaulting a police officer at a Bell Hotel demo on Friday.
PM’S ‘PRIDE’ IN FLAG
PM SIR Keir Starmer yesterday declared himself a “supporter of flags” — and revealed he still proudly displays a St George’s Cross in his flat.
He dismissed claims that showing off England’s ensign should be seen as racist, telling BBC Five Live: “I am the leader of the Labour Party who put the Union Jack on membership cards.
“I always sit in front of the Union Jack. I’ve been doing it for years, and it attracted a lot of comment when I started doing it.” He said he bought his England flag for last year’s Euros football.
The flag debate reignited after councils in the West Midlands and Tower Hamlets tried to remove the St George’s Cross from lamp posts and motorway bridges over claims they intimidated minorities.
The PM added: “They’re patriotic and a great symbol of our nation. I don’t think they should be devalued and belittled.”
A CAKE shop owner can remain in Britain despite being wanted for murder in his home country.

An extradition bid failed when the High Court upheld a decision by a district judge to allow Santos to remain here.
It was deemed Santos, who denies involvement in the 2010 murder, could not be guaranteed a retrial and it could not be proved he fled justice to come here.
He is now co-owner of Kings & Queens Dessert outlet, set up three years ago in Leeds.
It recently won The Best Dessert Shop in West Yorkshire award.
Santos was 18 when he was accused of being part of a group who killed a gang rival near Lisbon.
He then spent two years in the army before coming to Britain, where his dad lives.
He said he was unaware he was jailed and did not know he had to notify authorities of his address change.
He refused to comment when approached.
ELON RANT
ELON Musk hit out at asylum seekers being housed in £300,000 newbuild homes after The Sun exposed it.
The world’s richest man, 54, waded into the migrant housing debate on his X platform, writing alongside our story: “This must stop now.”
The Tesla chief and former aide to US President Donald Trump also accused the Government of giving away freebies, such as houses worth £1,200-a-month, to import more voters.
Another user had written: “They give them homes rent-free while British citizens have to pay. This is how Labour stay in power.”
Mr Musk, worth £306billion, shared the comments and added: “Exactly. And it will work, unless the people of Britain put a stop to it.”
A MUM is ho-ho-home and dry for Christmas already — with £2,000 of gifts all set to go under the tree.
Charlotte Chandler started buying presents for her children Harley, 14, Evie, 13, and six-year-old Myles in June.
The 36-year-old says stocking up early takes off the pressure during the festive period.
She said: “Getting organised early makes a massive difference.
“I usually start in June but sometimes I start earlier.
“This way, I can spread the cost but also be less stressed nearer Christmas and have spare money for activities.
“Going through a busy shopping centre in December and fighting for a parking space is a no thank you.”
And she resists any urge to keep adding to her stockpile.
Charlotte said: “I don’t keep going until Christmas. I’m done now.”
The well-organised content creator, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, hides the presents in two 7ft cupboards with locks on them.
Besides the £2,000 on gifts, single mum Charlotte will add about £10 a week to her food shop to buy festive treats such as crisps, nuts, chocolates and fizzy drinks.
She said: “Anything to keep those stress levels down and enjoy Christmas.”
Christmas Eve boxes are out – the new trend parents are gifting kids instead, it’s cheaper & they’ll enjoy it more too

IT was 1984 and newly qualified doctor Daniel Drucker was excited to dive into the world of scientific research.
Fresh out of the University of Toronto Medical School, the 28-year-old was working at a lab in Boston in the US when his supervisor asked him to carry out a routine experiment — which proved to be anything but.

For it led to Dr Drucker’s discovery of a previously unknown hormone, sparking a new era in medicine.
What he modestly calls a “happy accident” then kick-started a series of discoveries that made today’s game-changing weight loss jabs a reality.
The hormone was called glucagon-like peptide 1 — or GLP-1, as the world now knows it.
So far around 50,000 of us have been prescribed jabs on the NHS for weight loss, but it is estimated around 1.5million people here are buying them privately — a figure that is expected to rise sharply.
Dr Drucker, now 69, tells The Sun: “I never felt like I was on the brink of something huge.
“It was just a fantastic stroke of luck to be in the right place at the right time and to be part of an innovation that could improve the health of hundreds of millions of people all over the world.”
The drugs are now being hailed as a possible cure for a range of other conditions too, including dementia and migraine.
But Dr Drucker warns: “We need to be cautious, respect what we don’t know, and not rush into thinking these medicines are right for everyone.
‘Full of hope’
“There could be side-effects we haven’t seen yet, especially in groups we haven’t properly studied.”
I had weight regain and stomach issues coming off fat jabs
Some studies have also raised concerns about gallbladder problems and in rare cases, even suicidal thoughts.
GLP-1 was found to play a key role in regulating the appetite and blood sugar levels, by slowing digestion and signalling a feeling of fullness to the brain.
Fat jabs such as Mounjaro and Wegovy contain synthetic versions of GLP-1, tirzepatide and semaglutide, which mimic the natural hormone with astonishing, fat-busting results.
Originally these drugs — known as GLP-1 agonists — were licensed to treat Type 2 diabetes, due to their ability to stimulate the body’s production of insulin, which cuts high blood glucose levels.
But over the past 15 years, after studies confirmed the potential to tackle obesity, pharmaceutical firms have reapplied to have the drugs approved as weight loss treatments.
And now evidence is emerging almost daily to suggest these drugs could help treat and even prevent other chronic and degenerative diseases.
Hundreds of scientific trials are under way, and Dr Drucker is “full of hope”, adding that he would consider taking the drugs himself, to ward off Alzheimer’s disease.
He says: “I think the next five years is going to be massive. These drugs won’t fix everything, but if they help even half the conditions we are testing them for, we could finally find treatments for conditions once thought untreatable.”
Decades after his discovery, Dr Drucker is now a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, and a senior investigator at the affiliated Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, where GLP-1 research now fills his life.
He says: “Every morning I turn on my phone and check what’s happened overnight — what new discovery has been made, what could this hormone cure or treat.”
Even so, in May UK health chiefs warned that the jabs must not be taken during pregnancy or in the two months before conception, after studies of animals found that semaglutide can cause pregnancy loss and birth defects.
But with human use, no such danger has been confirmed, Dr Drucker says, and dozens of women have conceived while taking them.

Some scientists even believe GLP-1 drugs may boost fertility, and could become a go-to for infertility treatment.
Dr Drucker, listed in Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2024, says: “It wouldn’t surprise me if five years from now, once we have more clinical trial evidence, if we start recommending these medicines to help people get pregnant, and have safer pregnancies.”
It is exciting stuff, but Dr Drucker admits he also worries about people using the drugs for the wrong reasons — such as slim, young women in pursuit of unrealistic beauty ideals on social media.
He says: “If I’ve got a 17-year-old who wants to lose another five per cent of her body weight to look like some celebrity, that’s a real concern.
“We haven’t studied 10,000 teenage girls on these drugs over five years. We don’t know how they affect bones, fertility, mental health or development in the long term.”
Last year model Lottie Moss, sister of supermodel Kate, revealed she had ended up in hospital after a seizure linked to high doses of weight loss drug Ozempic.
I think the next five years will be massive. These drugs won’t fix everything, but if they help even half the conditions we are testing for, we could find treatments for conditions thought untreatable
Dr Daniel Drucker
A nurse told her the dose she had been injecting was meant for someone twice her size.
Dr Drucker warned that older adults, people with eating disorders and those with mental health conditions may respond differently to the drugs.
He says: “We’re still learning, and just because a medicine works well in one group doesn’t mean it is safe for everyone.”
Dr Drucker says: “Some people experience nausea and vomiting, which can lead to dehydration, and that in itself can be dangerous.” He also warns that losing weight too quickly can reduce muscle mass and bone density, which is especially risky for older people.
He adds: “This is why it is important people only take these drugs when being monitored by medical professionals, so they can be properly assessed for side-effects and receive the safest, most effective care.”

So far at least 85 people in the UK have died after taking weight loss jabs, according to reports sent to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency watchdog.
While none of the deaths has been definitively linked to the drugs, health bodies noted a “suspicion” that they may have played a role.
Dr Drucker says: “Reports like these can raise flags, but without proper comparison groups they don’t tell the full story.
‘Drugs aren’t candy’
“In fact, large trials show GLP-1 drugs actually reduce death rates in people with Type 2 diabetes and those with obesity and heart disease.
“So far, the evidence looks solid and reassuring.”
With millions of patients treated over the years, GLP-1s have a well-established safety record for diabetes and obesity.
But Dr Drucker warns that for newer uses, such as Alzheimer’s, fatty liver disease or sleep apnoea, we need more data.
He says: “I don’t think there are any hidden, terrifying side-effects waiting to be uncovered.
“But that doesn’t mean people should take them lightly. We don’t yet have 20 years of experience treating some of these conditions.
“We need to approach each new indication with appropriate caution, to really understand the benefits versus the potential risks.
“These drugs aren’t candy, they won’t fix everything — and like all medicines they have side-effects.
“I don’t think we should abandon our focus on safety. We need to move carefully and thoughtfully as this field evolves.”
I’m not struggling with Type 2 diabetes or obesity, but I do have a family history of Alzheimer’s. I’m watching the trials closely and, depending on the results, I wouldn’t rule out taking them in the future
Dr Daniel Drucker
He continues: “I’m not struggling with Type 2 diabetes or obesity, but I do have a family history of Alzheimer’s. I’m watching the trials closely and, depending on the results, I wouldn’t rule out taking them in the future.
“I have friends from college who are already showing early signs of cognitive decline, and there’s hope that in some cases, semaglutide might help to slow it.”
Several studies over the years support that theory.
A recent study by a US university found that the jabs could prevent Alzheimer’s-related changes in people with Type 2 diabetes.
Separate research from Taiwan found that people on GLP-1 agonist drugs appeared to have a 37 per cent lower risk of dementia.
Dr Drucker now regularly receives messages from people around the world whose lives have been changed by the drugs his lab helped to create.
He says: “I get tons of stories. People send me emails and photos, not just showing their weight loss, but how their health has changed in other ways too.”
Some say the jabs have helped their chronic pain, cleared brain fog or improved long-standing health conditions such as ulcerative colitis or arthritis.
Dr Drucker adds: “It’s incredibly heartwarming and I never get tired of hearing these stories.”
But for him there is even deeper meaning attached to his discovery.
His 97-year-old mother Cila, originally from Poland, survived the Holocaust, spending months as a child hiding in the family’s attic before they were captured and held in a ghetto, where her mother and sister were later shot dead.
At the end of the war in 1945 she became a refugee in Palestine, then in 1953 she emigrated to Canada, first settling in Montreal then making Toronto her home in the 1990s.
Dr Drucker says his work has helped to ease Cila’s survivor’s guilt which had consumed her for decades.
He says: “She looks at my work and she’s so proud of how many people it could potentially help.”
A 500kg unexploded Second World War bomb found in a Plymouth back garden triggered a warning to some 50,000 phones in February last year.
Messages can be targeted to relatively small areas to pinpoint those at risk.
Some 15,000 phones were alerted during flooding in Cumbria in May 2024, and 10,000 received a warning during flooding in Leicestershire in January this year.
The system is designed for use during the most likely emergencies to affect the UK and warnings would also be transmitted ontelevision, radioand locally by knocking on doors.
Cops issue urgent safety advice as Storm Eowyn triggers rare red weather warning
The agency’s Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam said: “Sadly, we are again reminded how severe whooping cough can be for very young babies.
“Vaccination is the best defence.
“It is vital pregnant women and infants receive their vaccines at the right time, ideally between 20 and 32 weeks.
“This passes protection to their baby in the womb so that they are protected from birth.”
Overall vaccination rates for primary school pupils are at the lowest for 15 years — with almost one in five not fully protected from diseases.
Over the coming weeks, millions of children will be flooding into classrooms across the UK.
And there’s a real risk they will return home with more than a few new friends and knowledge.
Pharmacist Thorrun Govind tells Sun on Sunday Health: “There’s often lots of hugging and playing between friends they haven’t seen all summer — and all that close contact means germs can easily spread.
“They also tend to cough and sneeze without covering their mouths and don’t always wash their hands without supervision.
“With early wake-ups, hard work in lessons and sports clubs, children can also get tired, which weakens their immune systems, leaving them prone to picking up illnesses.”

Roger Morton, Director of Business Change at the NHBC, said: ‘The industry needs more than 250,000 construction workers by 2028 to meet demand and build the 10,000 new homes we need’Credit: supplied
TO match the Government’s £100million for training courses, the National House Building Council is injecting the same.
They are looking to get more young people into construction, but also other groups including ex-military and people who have been in prison.
Roger Morton, Director of Business Change at the NHBC, said: “The industry needs more than 250,000 construction workers by 2028 to meet demand and build the 10,000 new homes we need. We need 2,500 brickies, 2,500 groundworkers and 1,000 carpenters and that’s why we’re investing £100million. We’re investing in 12 new NHBC multi-skilled training hubs across the country, to support 3,000 apprenticeships each year. We are targeting young people but also career changers, veterans, ex-offenders. We provide a unique, immersive facility where we can train people in 14 to 18 months, many with distinctions. That’s nearly twice as fast as traditional routes.
“We need to change perception so people see that being a trade is a great career. The average bricklayer earns £50,000, and they might progress to management, senior management, director. A colleague began as an apprentice and runs a 230-strong department.”

SHE is sleight of figure, so many think Tegan Pryor is joking when she tells them she’s a builder.
But having ditched a leisure-centre job to study bricklaying at college, the hard grafter is now backing our Build A Better Britain campaign to urge more young people to take up a trade.
Tegan, 23, from Shefford, Beds, said: “I started training as a bricklayer three years ago and honestly, I’ve never looked back.
“It is 100 per cent the right career for me. I was a lifeguard and receptionist at a leisure centre before but there wasn’t much career opportunity, it felt like a dead end.
“Now, I get to work outdoors and have a laugh with my colleagues – and I’m not treated any differently because I’m a woman.
“There is respect, and I learn something new every day.
“I’m on about £130 a day for an eight-and-a-half hour shift and some days it’s hard, but it’s also satisfying when you look back on what you achieved.
“The average wage for a bricklayer is about £50,000 a year and that’s what I’m heading towards.”

‘You can make £300 a day’

Lucas, 25, from Nottingham, did a two-and-a-half year bricklaying course at Derby CollegeCredit: Paul Tonge
HE was toying with going to university but the prospect of three more years’ book study, and the debt, swung Lucas Robinson to learn a trade.
Lucas, 25, from Nottingham, did a two-and-a-half year bricklaying course at Derby College, while working on sites for his employer at £170 a week.
He said of bricklaying: “I’ve been doing this for four years and the company I work for is all over the country. Bricklaying is what you make of it. You can start at 8am, finish at 3pm and make £300 a day, depending on the deal. I’ve been doing ‘price bricklaying’ for a while, paid 65p a brick and about £150 a day, but I hear you can make £1 a brick in London.
“Eight hours is a long day carrying bricks and it can be stressful when things are not going right, but I love my job. My dad’s a bricklayer too.
“My mum wanted to push me down the uni route, but I decided on a different path and I’m so happy.
“Looking at a house and thinking, I built that and people are going to live in it, it’s a good feeling.”

Dan Smoker has been a builder for 18 years and reckons the trade is going from strength to strengthCredit: supplied
DILIGENT Dan Smoker has been a builder for 18 years and reckons the trade is going from strength to strength so there’s good money to be made for those with the right skills.
Dan, 34, from Epsom, Surrey, said: “I did bricklaying at college and after that went into being a multi-trader.
“Now I run my own company and business is good. If someone needs a new kitchen or bathroom, they call me.
“I work on word-of-mouth so don’t have to advertise, and my niche is the maintenance side of things. It’s been a fantastic career for me because you rarely work for the same person and you’re dealing with a range of issues and problems.
“You are problem-solving every day and the bit I like is when you do the work, stand back and see the customer is happy. You feel really proud of what you’ve done. It’s a feeling of immense satisfaction.
