Deliveroo sees huge shares jump after £2.8billion takeover offer from US firm

A TAKEOVER offer of £2.8billion has lifted Deliveroo shares to their best day on the stock market.

The takeaway delivery service — once called the “worst listing in history” — saw the jump after saying it was minded to accept a rival’s approach.

A takeover offer of £2.8billion from Doordash has lifted Deliveroo shares to their best day on the stock market

Deliveroo on Friday night signalled a deal with goliath US service Doordash would go ahead, following almost a year of on-off talks.

Shares in the British firm yesterday rallied 23.4p higher — or 16.6 per cent — to 170.9p, which would value the business at £2.56billion.

It is thought that a deal valuing Deliveroo’s shares at 180p each in cash will be confirmed later this week.

At that price, its founder and CEO Will Shu will land a £172million payday for his remaining shares.

Just two months ago, Mr Shu quashed rumours he had plans to step down.

He may choose to stay with the prospective combined business.

It is understood that the Deliveroo brand name will not be leaving the UK.

DoorDash previously kept the name Wolt going in Europe and Asia after its takeover of the Finnish delivery service back in 2022.

The Deliveroo takeover marks the end of a City rollercoaster for the firm, and shows how DoorDash and its British counterpart — which have strikingly similar beginnings and business models — saw very different fortunes.

They were both started in 2013 by entrepreneurs, and floated in 2021 on the back of the global Covid pandemic sparking a surge in demand for online food deliveries.

From Campbell’s soup to Caramac and Lilt – the iconic foods disappearing from supermarket shelves

But while DoorDash has grown to operate in 30 countries to be now worth £58billion, Deliveroo has only just turned a £3million maiden profit and has been exiting some international markets.

Deliveroo won back some confidence lately after broadening from just takeaways to retail deliveries with tie-ups with supermarkets, B&Q, and even Ann Summers.

But it has never lived up to its £7.6billion stock market valuation from its initial listing in 2021.

Despite being hailed by then-Chancellor Rishi Sunak as a “true British tech success story”, its shares lost 30 per cent of their value within the first few days, and it never recovered.

The failure was blamed on poor timing as lockdowns eased, as well as the growth of rivals.

There were also concerns over its zero-hour contracts model.

The deal with DoorDash follows similar negotiations at other takeaway firms.

In February, Just Eat was acquired by investment group Prosus for £3.5billion.

BUSINESS ANALYSIS

AROUND 100 years ago, food deliveries by bike were common.

That’s how Greggs started — with founder John Gregg taking eggs and yeast to Newcastle families on his pushbike.

When Deliveroo started in 2013, cynics questioned if it was just squandering millions of pounds to do the same thing.

It was hardly reinventing the wheel, they argued, even if a whizzy app meant it was considered a technology firm.

At the time of Deliveroo’s failed listing in 2021, there had just been an explosion of fast-growing rivals like Gorillas, Zapp, Uber Eats and Getir.

At the same time, the easing of lockdowns meant a fall in demand for takeaways.

A flurry of deals saw US service Gopuff shore up most start-ups, while investors at Prosus gobbled up Just Eat.

What has become clear is that food delivery tech firms need plenty of dough.

By combining with DoorDash, Deliveroo will have a better chance of keeping the wheels of its couriers’ bikes turning.

THEME BARK ON

PAW Patrol will be “there on the double” after Merlin Entertainments struck a deal for a theme park dedicated to the cartoon pups.

The leisure giant, which runs Madame Tussauds and Legoland Windsor, said it had struck a partnership with Paramount to bring the animated characters to Chessington World of Adventures in South West London.

Merlin Entertainments has struck a deal for a Paw Patrol theme park

It will be the UK’s first Paw Patrol-themed resort with four themed rides, dedicated hotels, plus a shop for parents to spend cash on merch for the kids.

Fiona Eastwood, boss of Merlin Entertainments, said the partnership “builds on our expanding offer to families with younger children, a key audience for us as part of our future growth plans”.

Paw Patrol, which follows the adventures of Ryder and his team of heroic rescue pups ready to save the day, was first released on Canadian TV in 2013.

UK fans first got to watch it on Channel 5’s Milkshake! slot a few months later.

It has since become a successful franchise with two theatrical films.

Its most recent, The Mighty Movie, made £152million at the global box office from a budget of £22million.

FRENCH FANCY ITV

THE French entertainment giant which produces Peaky Blinders and Big Brother is said to be exploring a takeover of ITV.

Banijay Group has held early talks with ITV bosses about a full acquisition or buying just its studio production business, according to the Financial Times.

Analysts reckon ITV studios could be worth £3billion alone.

Despite the takeover interest, shares in ITV yesterday dipped by 4.3 per cent, valuing the whole business at £2.89billion.

A LIDL BIT MORE

LIDL is investing half a billion pounds in Britain this year as it sets its sights on crossing the milestone of 1,000 stores.

The discount supermarket, which already has 980 shops here, plans to open another 40 during 2025.

It also wants a new distribution centre on top of its 14 existing locations.

The chain has welcomed Government planning reforms — having previously complained about rivals blocking new stores.

Lidl’s Richard Taylor said it would aid the “kind of growth we are working towards”.

THE GOING RATES

MINISTERS are ramping up their regulators bonfire by scrapping the Valuation Office Agency, which sets business rates and collects council tax.

It will be rolled directly into HMRC from next April.

Treasury Minister James Murray said it will end inefficient duplication of agencies, plus “drive change faster and improve value for money”.

The VOA has been criticised for inaccuracies and unfairness in setting business rates.

But experts at Colliers fear politicising the VOA may cause issues for ratepayers.

RENTS outside London have hit a record high of £1,349 a month after a 0.6 per cent increase in the last quarter, according to Rightmove.

The average in the capital rose to £2,698, despite more properties coming on to the market.

HACKERS HIT M&S FOR £28M

MARKS & SPENCER has missed out on around £28million of sales since a cyber attack forced it to suspend online orders on Friday.

Hackers first targeted the retailer over the Easter weekend, initially affecting contactless payments and click and collect orders.

But M&S paused online shopping via its website and app on Friday, which experts said showed hackers were deep in its systems.

More than £700million has been wiped off the company’s market valuation since the cyber attack started.

M&S said customer data had not been affected but it could not say when normal service would resume.

Staff are having to fulfil click and collect orders manually.

Agency workers at its warehouse in Castle Donington, Leics, were told they were not needed yesterday because there was much less “picking and packing” to be done.

CHATGPT maker OpenAI is launching a new search tool that turns its chatbot into a personal shopper.

The function will allow it to trawl the internet for home, fashion, and beauty products — and produces personalised recommendations tailored to budget and reviews.

Shock as 1,472 quango fat-cats earned over £100k last year, report reveals

A TOTAL of 1,472 quango fat-cats earned more than £100,000 last year, a report has revealed.

Some 315 of the state-funded staff took home more than the Prime Minister’s £172,153.

Channel 4 boss Alex Mahon topped the list, pocketing £993,000 in total, with a salary of £619,000.

Homes England had the most six-figure earners at 111, followed by the BBC with 90.

Beeb commercial chief Tom Fussell took home £774,000, including a bumper £309,000 bonus — the biggest bonus recorded.

The TPA said it backs Labour’s review of the UK’s 380 quangos but added real change must mean urgently cutting numbers back.

The think tank also renewed calls for the government to sell off Channel 4.

Responding to the report, Mike Wood MP, Shadow Cabinet Office Minister, said: “There are too many quangos wasting taxpayers’ cash, but Labour’s only answer is to create 27 more – including Rachel Reeves’s pet project Office for Value for Money which will cost millions of pounds without any benefit for hardworking people.

The Conservatives are under new leadership, and we are clear we need to cut waste, streamline government, and put power back in the hands of the public.”

John O’Connell, chief executive of the TPA, said: “Taxpayers will be shocked to hear that there are hundreds of quangocrats heading up bodies they may never have heard taking home massive pay packets the average Brit can only dream of.

“But beyond the healthy remuneration, arguably the bigger problem is that in many areas of government policy these quango bosses reign supreme, with minimal ministerial or parliamentary oversight despite the often highly sensitive and significant nature of what their organisation is responsible for.”

Chris Eubank Jr had no water in his body to even sweat so it’s time to put health before wealth & KO Benn rematch talks

CHRIS EUBANK Jr spending over 24hrs in a Royal London Hospital bed after suffering chronic dehydration is all the evidence boxing fans need to see why a Conor Benn rematch should be dead and buried.

The 35-year-old could not make the 11st 6lb middleweight limit on Friday morning — not even after another desperate last training session moments later.

After the fight, his insides were so bone dry he could barely sweat, when any other athlete on the planet — after 36 minutes of breathless action — would be saturated.

So, what chance that he will be able to boil down to the 160lb limit SAFELY for the scheduled rematch in September, when he will be 36 and further battling with his fading metabolism?

Just because casual boxing fans think they saw a thrilling slugfest between an evenly matched pair of nepo-baby millionaires.

Just because the Tottenham Stadium was filled by the Instagram generation that wants to film itself attending flashy events — it does not mean a son, a brother and an uncle needs to starve the crucial protective membrane around his brain of water yet again.

READ MORE ON CHRIS EUBANK JR

Now that the pair have banked £8million each, helped Sky Sports flog hundreds of thousands of pay-per-views, treated their legendary fathers to one last night in the lime-lit ring and itched that itch of a third fight between the families — both men deserve to move on and achieve more.

Benn is 28, his early career was expertly guided and he grabbed the scalps of a few decent Americans but he has never even challenged for an English or British title.

He is too rich and successful to go back now and fight for domestic titles but he is also too small and not talented enough to become a world champion in his new 11st 6lb division.

But he could definitely rebuild back at the 10st 7lb welter limit or even the 11st super-welter maximum, where some tough but beatable names hold the fragmented belts and compete for the top slots.

Eubank Jr’s stock will probably never be higher — but he has repeatedly shown he is unwilling to take world-title shots when the risk outweighs the rewards.

Ex-champ Gennady Golovkin was wisely avoided like the plague and his compatriot, reigning champion Janibek Alimkhanuly, has been dodged like a vegan dinner party invite.

The super-middle division of 12st is the safest place for him to go because there is fellow Londoner Hamzah Sheeraz lurking there and fellow Sky Sports fighter Callum Simpson in the stable.

Since the tragic 2021 death of his brother Sebastian — who left baby son Raheem behind — Eubank Jr has been candid about his change in priorities.

World title belts, as golden as they may glisten and as deep in boxing stone they might etch names, cannot help to feed, raise and educate a three-year-old boy in Dubai.

Illustration of boxing punch stats for Eubank vs. Benn.

The statement from his BOXXER promoters could not hide the fact that his kidneys, brain and heart needed to be carefully watched for signs of damage.

They wrote: “As part of his standard post-fight protocol, Chris went to hospital for precautionary checks to monitor his vitals and ensure everything is in order.

“They take these measures very seriously, given everything they have experienced.

“This process is something they now prioritise after every fight.”

The first Benn vs Eubank Sr fight, in 1990, ended in an emphatic ninth-round win for the lisping showman.

And the 1993 rematch ended in a controversial draw that most viewers accept should have been awarded to the former British fusilier, Benn.

Now the third instalment has made it 2-0 to the Brighton family, there is just no need to return to that well and keep pulling at the heartstrings.

The nostalgia appeal is as exhausted as the two boxers were from the middle rounds.

And the novelty effect will be as spent as the £16m Saudi Arabia sunk into their purses.

Any notion of feuding families, malice, spite and bragging rights went down the khazi the second they all hugged and praised each other like a group of Love Island boys waiting to meet the chicks of Casa Amor.

The fight was grubby and dangerous, we are lucky a brief hospital recovery is the worst of the fallout.

There is a reason the British Boxing Board of Control avoided calls and messages from reporters on Friday and Saturday morning about weight-cut rules being broken and liberties taken.

British boxing got away with one, some brave people got rich some greedy ones got even richer.

But the game is too hard — and we are not fortunate enough — to keep pushing our luck with the health and safety of men too brave for their own safety.

ROUND BY ROUND

ROUND 1

The referee forces them to touch gloves before the bout starts after initially ignoring his request.

Benn flies out looking for the right, bobbing, weaving, jumping in with another right. Eubank triples up the jab looking to assert his size. Round feels like it went on forever.

ROUND 2

Benn darts forward, ducking under a Eubank shot and then both trade lefts.

There is a coming together — before both get a warning from the ref.

Jab from Eubank snaps Benn’s head back but he fires straight back.

Right hook lands for Benn, then a jab lands but Eubank responds and scores with a left hook.

ROUND 3

The Londoner just misses with a counter right as Eubank looks a little lethargic.

Right shot lands on the button for Benn and a follow-up left stuns Eubank in what is the first sign of danger.

Eubank goads Benn and tries to rough him up and snaps his head back with a jab.

Big right for Benn as Eubank looks to go to the body.

ROUND 4

Three-punch combo out the gate for Eubank to head and body pushes Benn back.

Huge uppercut off the jab lands for Eubank as the crowd chant his name.

Benn slips and lands a left, then follows up soon after with a counter right.

ROUND 5

Benn hits the floor — but it is ruled a slip and Eubank looks intent to just stop the attacks.

But he drives Benn back with a couple of one-twos and then sends him flying across the ring with a shrug — using his size advantage.

Eubank misses with a right and Benn says ‘what was that?’

ROUND 6

The smaller man drives Eubank on to the ropes and sticks his gloves in his opponent’s MOUTH.

Sharp counter right lands for Benn, then Eubank replies but both end up losing each other.

Counter right uppercut lands for Eubank.

Benn connects with a right, Eubank responds with a jab and then evades three shots coming his way — the fight appears to be turning here.

ROUND 7

Ugly scenes as they try to grab each other and punch, which ends with a warning for Eubank — potentially his last before a point comes off.

He whips in an uppercut, which Benn takes well as crowd gasps.

Uppercut left shakes Benn but he fires back.

Benn walks into some shots, not defending as well as earlier, while Eubank lets the verbals jabs fly too. A big one-two shakes Benn.

ROUND 8

Benn comes out strong, swinging from the hip after sensing Eubank’s recent success.

It becomes a slugfest — but nothing lands.

Again both trade hooks, bobbing, weaving and throwing shots at each other.

Eubank chases Benn across the ring desperately looking for a big shot.

ROUND 9

A wild misses with a left hook from Benn and they tangle in the centre of the ring before the Londoner connects with a decent right hand.

A looping hook misses Eubank but he is CUT from a head clash. Both land shots as the Brighton man takes the fight to close quarters.

ROUND 10

Both quite literally run into each other and let their hands go, turning it into a brawl.

Eubank forces Benn onto the ropes, goes back into the centre and it is a fight in a phonebox.

Both swing from the hip and land on the button. Benn connects on the chin and Eubank’s legs dip but he just evades a follow-up shot.

Eubank walks right into a Benn right hand.

ROUND 11

Eubank lands a jab and right hook to the body, then follows up with a counter uppercut.

The Brighton boxer unleashes a barrage of shots, bullying the smaller man, as Benn backs up to the ropes.

ROUND 12

They touch gloves — the first glimpse of respect between them.

There is a tussle on the ropes with Eubank getting the better of it, using his size, as a big right hand rockets off Benn’s head.

Benn is shaken back with a short shot but responds with a huge right. Eubank fires a left and both trade punches until the final bell goes.

Plans for quango football regulator should be scrapped immediately, blasts Kemi Badenoch

PLANS for a quango football regulator should be scrapped immediately, Kemi Badenoch blasted yesterday.

The Tory Leader implored Sir Keir Starmer against creating another body which could be led by a Labour donor.

In the coming weeks, ministers are expected to confirm that the football regulator will be headed up by David Kogan.

The sports media rights executive donated almost £75,000 to Labour MPs and parliamentary candidates in 2023 and 2024.

Ms Badenoch told The Sun: “I don’t and have never really believed in the idea of a football regulator, because it’s about who runs it.

“I’ve heard rumours that Labour has picked some Labour person to run the football regulator.

“So it’s going to be a quango.

“This is a government that doesn’t have serious businesspeople, people who understand these things.

“Labour, running football, in my view, is not a good idea.”

In February Reform UK MP Rupert Lowe, former chairman of Southampton FC and FA Board member, warned the organisation would destroy the Premier League.

Speaking to The Sun’s Never Mind The Ballots show, he said: “The Premier League’s an unbelievable success.

“It brings huge soft power to Britain, it brings huge amounts of tax revenue to the Exchequer.”

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley stuns in white skirt and sheer top as she attends Gigi Hadid’s 30th birthday bash in New York

Singer Taylor Swift and actress Anne Hathaway were also at the weekend party at Le Chalet cocktail bar and restaurant.

Meanwhile Rosie and her fiance Jason Statham have made the residents of their posh neighbourhood angry by landing in a chopper and scaring their horses.

The actor and Rosie have been dropped off on a playing field near a riding school several times.

A 35-year-old mother of one who witnessed a landing in South London last Friday said: “The helicopter flew quite low over a riding ground and spooked two horses which were out at the time.

“After landing, the pilot ran across the field to say sorry.

“It looked like he was really apologetic and made an effort to make sure everyone was OK.

“But if a horse bolts with a six-year-old on it, it won’t be pretty. Jason might have to save the day — again.”

Jason — star of films such as Crank, Snatch, The Transporter and the Fast and Furious franchise — landed with Rosie in the area again the next day.

This time the pilot is said to have made a conscious effort to avoid the riding school.

But one homeowner said the helicopter has become a bit of a nuisance in recent months.

She said: “It’s been quite frequent. It flies low over our houses and it’s very loud.

“It’s not something we appreciate. I won’t be happy if it becomes a regular occurrence.

“There’s a reason we chose to live far out from Heathrow or City airports.”

The English hotel with one of the UK’s poshest spas… but it’s only for dogs

NESTLED in Somerset’s Mendip hills, boutique hotel Charlton House is home to one of the UK’s poshest spas.

But its clients aren’t blushing brides and well-coiffed country folk – the spa is for DOGS, and my four-legged companion Harry was about to have the time of his life.

Luxury hotel room with fireplace and garden view.

The Montigo Resorts Somerset hotel in Somerset also offers much for pups’ owners to enjoy – a grade II-listed mansion with grand fountains and lush lawns.

The real star of the show, though, is Kelly Davis, a former hairdresser who was crowned best dog groomer in the country and owns KD Pet Spa.

She shot to fame after winning BBC competition Pooch Perfect in 2022 – presented by Gavin & Stacey star Sheridan Smith – and now has a few celebrity clients although can’t say who.

Dogs can tell “doggy” people straightaway, and Kelly instantly won over my two-year-old black-and-white mixed breed.

Inside, her lavender-scented spa is a little different to those I’ve seen before. There’s two small treatment tables, a huge sink area for shampooing, and a counter featuring an array of fancy pet products.

While Harry snuggled on a cushion, I answered questions about his allergies, and likes and dislikes, then it was time for his . . . blueberry facial.

The treatment involves a mask made from fresh blueberries, coconut oil and a little water, which is “full of antioxidants”.

Kelly explains: “It calms the skin, relieves any itchiness and brightens and whitens the coat.”

Harry probably would have eaten it, if he hadn’t been so mesmerised by the motion of Kelly’s fingers, gently smoothing the mixture on to his face.

The solution was left on for ten minutes, while Harry relaxed to classical music.

Take a look inside this luxurious dog hotel in New York

After it was washed off, Harry had a deshedding treatment, to remove hair from his undercoat.

The price varies, depending on the type of coat, but for 22kg Harry, who has short, straight hair, it would cost around £70.

For those not in the know, the treatment is more than just a brush. The tool used is part comb and part razor, getting all the loose hair out and leaving Harry looking a few pounds lighter.

But the key to Kelly’s success is not her treatments. It is the way she bonds with pets.

She says: “There must be trust. We deal with their teeth, bottoms, paws and all over, so it’s quite intimate, which can’t be done if the dog doesn’t trust me. I treat them how I’d like to be treated myself.”

Elsewhere in the hotel, guests can take advantage of the human spa which features eight treatment rooms and a thermal area, as well as restaurants, including dog-friendly joints, serving Asian grub, steaks and all-day brunch.

Kelly adds: “Owners know their dog is being well treated and they come back feeling relaxed. They can drop in and out if they want to check on their pet.”

The hotel has 28 dog-friendly rooms, too.

You’d be barking mad not to check it out.

JUST a few hours ahead of meeting Donald Trump’s Treasury Secretary for crucial trade talks, Rachel Reeves let the cat out of the bag.

With officials scrabbling to thrash out a vital transatlantic deal, the Chancellor revealed she thinks the EU is a more important partner to Britain than America.

Rachel Reeves speaking at the Semafor World Economy Summit.

1

As the Pound dipped in response, Downing Street pointedly refused to back Reeves insisting “both are of incredible importance”.

But it was a telling insight into Labour’s thinking: that when push comes to shove, their hearts remain with the EU.

Why else would ministers risk American ire by considering taking rules on food imports into the UK from the European Court of Justice?

Or gamble with immigration by holding advance talks on an EU Youth Mobility scheme allowing under 30-year-old Europeans to come here freely — just a month after flatly denying any such plans.

America is the world’s biggest economy.

A trade deal that also wiped out Trump’s crippling tariffs would transform Britain’s economic fortunes.

So why give up the obvious advantage of Trump’s love of Brexit Britain by suggesting trade with him is inferior to the EU?

The Chancellor’s ill-advised comments have shown the obvious dangers in her strategy of trying to ride two horses at the same time.

Frack and ruin

BRITAIN has squandered the enormous potential power of fracking.

We are sitting on vast quantities of shale gas while the Government imports coal for British Steel from Japan, gas from Norway and electricity from France.

Sir Keir Starmer insists he can balance Donald Trump and closer ties with Europe despite looming US-EU trade war

Fracking is a cheap, safe solution to the problem of bridging the decades until green tech works efficiently.

Ed Miliband is too blinkered to do it.

So Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch must make it a key plank of her future energy policy.

Old boys club

AS if the football regulator wasn’t a bad enough idea, now Labour has stumbled into a cronyism row over it.

The Tories say they can’t be sure whether party donor David Kogan will be on the side of fans — or happier teaming up with friends in Government to do what ministers want.

This unnecessary row would quickly go away if Labour saw sense and threw the entire thing on their planned bonfire of quangos.

It’s another anti-growth policy that will stifle the Premier League — one of our biggest assets.

Kick it into touch, Prime Minister.

Inside Pink Floyd’s epic Pompeii gig as spectacular upgraded version of iconic film hits cinemas in days

BA-DUM. Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum. What is it about Pink Floyd and heartbeats?

An amplified heartbeat bookends their defining album, The Dark Side Of The Moon — a profound, at times overwhelming, sonic exploration of mortality.

And another ushers in the most captivating filmed document of the prog rock pioneers in action, the newly restored Pink Floyd At Pompeii: MCMLXXII.

In early October, 1971, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright set up shop in the haunting surrounds of a Roman amphitheatre in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.

“Maybe we thought we were all going on an Italian holiday,” says Mason today. “Like Cliff Richard but in Italy.”

Though summer had passed, he reports that it was still “hot and dusty” on the shores of the Gulf Of Naples that year.

Witnessed by only a small crew and a few children messing about in the ruins, Floyd delivered a masterful set of pre-Dark Side material, beginning and ending with one of their most complex soundscapes, Echoes.

Other tracks such as Careful With That Axe, Eugene, A Saucerful Of Secrets and One Of These Days were later interspersed with studio footage from Abbey Road, shot the following year.

In similar vein to The Beatles’ Get Back documentary, this gives the film a welcome added dimension of unguarded, fly-on-the-wall glimpses of Floyd as they set about making their next album.

You know, THE one I already mentioned, which came housed in a jet-black sleeve with a triangular prism on the outside and, naturally, a spectrum in the form of a heartbeat on the inside.

Mason remembers the sessions as “an easy period for the band”.

“Things were going well, and we were full of ideas,” he says. “It was before things began to unravel.”

Eerie video reveals Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour’s £10m mansion ‘frozen in time’ after being abandoned by star years ago

The reason I’ve been afforded the chance to catch up with Mason, the musician I consider to be Floyd’s beating heart, is because a spectacular 21st Century upgrade of the Pompeii film hits UK cinemas this week and an accompanying live album arrives on May 2.

“Talk about the passage of time,” sighs the amiable 81-year-old.

“We had no idea back then that anyone would be looking at this material 50 years hence. This is the only record of how we played during that period, what we did and what we looked like.”

But he adds with a chuckle: “Clearly no one was in charge of the wardrobe — or the wardrobe was still on its way from Dover.”

In Mason’s case, he performed with inventive intensity while sporting a mop of dark shoulder-length curls, a bandana and a blue T-shirt emblazoned with a rainbow-coloured butterfly.

Across various scenes, you’ll also notice what he calls “my vast array of moustaches”.

“In ’71, we didn’t have smart cameras or smartphones so you could more or less capture everything you did,” he says.

But he is thrilled with the restored Pompeii sequences. “I’m amazed at the sound in particular,” he continues.

“That’s the surprise of the whole thing. It’s so old but it has so much going for it.

“And I have to say that it’s a tribute to Abbey Road (known in those days as EMI Studios) because so much of their technology was carried out to Italy.

Speaking for the band, Mason affirms: “We are really pleased we did it and slightly taken aback.

“We were very engaged, but it was not something we brought to the table, which was unusual for us.

“Most of the time, we were deciding what to do next by ourselves. So, we look at it in a bemused way.”

As for the actual footage, Mason says: “The extraordinary quality is partly down to modern technology but also to (director of restoration) Lana Topham.

“I think she’s been working on that footage for most of her life!”

Mason explains that the original project was “not driven by us” but by film director Adrian Maben.

“When I look at it now, I’m a bit ashamed at our casualness. We seemed more interested in teasing Adrian than doing any work.”

The story goes that Maben had been trying to persuade Floyd to co-operate in a film showcasing their otherworldly sound but, as Mason admits, “We initially said no”.

“Adrian’s vision had involved a bit more art and a bit less of us messing around,” continues the drummer.

‘Done in one take’

Then, during a holiday to Naples, Maben visited the Pompeii amphitheatre and, as he strolled around the eerie ruins looking for his missing passport, he sensed that he’d found the ideal setting for his ambitious plans.

“He probably persuaded our manager Steve O’Rourke that it was a good idea and then found the money to fund it,” says Mason.

“We had no way of anticipating how it would turn out, but it became a happy union between a slightly rough venue and not having the problems of a live audience.

“It meant we could stop and rerun if we wanted to but, in reality, virtually all of it was done in one take.”

The “rough venue” was originally designed to host brutal gladiatorial contests in front of 20,000 baying spectators, providing the, er, heartbeat of a beautiful but doomed city.

In capacity terms, it was the open-air equivalent of London’s 02 Arena — but with added gore.

As you may have guessed, the theatre was buried in ash when Vesuvius erupted in AD79 — but it literally rose like a phoenix by the time excavation was completed in 1816.

If Pink Floyd were the first rock band to play the ruins, both David Gilmour, as part of a solo tour, and Mason with his band Saucerful Of Secrets, have returned there in recent years.

Looking at that initial performance in 1971, I’ve been left with striking impressions of each band member.

Guitarist Gilmour stripped to the waist, his long, straight, fairish hair blowing across his face, playing his black Fender Strat like the personification of a rock god.

Bassist Roger Waters, later the band’s chief songwriter but here taking a more egalitarian approach, silhouetted against the setting sun and banging a mighty gong.

Keyboard player Rick Wright, the least extrovert of the four, adding ethereal vocals to Echoes and providing the gorgeous organ part for the Celestial Voices finale to A Saucerful Of Secrets with Gilmour’s cry leading the wordless vocals.

Drummer Mason occupying a central position and driving each song to greater heights with just the right amount of tempo, subtlety and power, the person who knits the whole shebang together.

If a lot of bands keep the rhythm section in the shadows and push the show-offs — the singer and lead guitarist — to the front of the stage, there’s a remarkable equality on display at Pompeii.

Mason says: “I wouldn’t be here now if I hadn’t gone to a gig at Regent Street Poly, where I was studying at the time, and Cream came on. I modelled myself on Ginger Baker.

We liked being a band that played together rather than one with a frontman and a drummer sitting on a table at the back.

Nick Mason

“We liked being a band that played together rather than one with a frontman and a drummer sitting on a table at the back.

“I remember Gary Wallis [Pink Floyd percussionist 1987-1994] saying to me, ‘A band is bass and drums and then some novelty acts’.”

Speaking of novelty acts, the Pompeii movie includes a track called Mademoiselle Nobs.

While in Paris, Floyd suggested they would like to film a performance of a short blues song featuring a howling dog with Gilmour on harmonica, in the style of Seamus from their then recent album Meddle.

Adrian Maben happened to know Madonna Bouglione, daughter of circus director Joseph Bouglione, who was known for strolling around the French capital with his dog Nobs.

Of the recording, Mason says: “It’s very strange. Original dog Seamus obviously had to bring in a deputy to do it.

“Fifty years later, I thought I might have to ring Noel Fitzpatrick, the Supervet, to find out if dogs don’t like howling.

“It did worry me slightly that we were torturing these poor animals — but I think they enjoyed it.”

So, whose idea was it to bring in the canine helpers? I venture. “I’m not sure,” confesses Mason. “I had a conversation with Roger a few weeks ago and I’m happy to say his memory is even worse than mine.”

Finally, we turn our attention to 1972 studio footage when Abbey Road was Floyd’s musical playground as they created their eighth album, The Dark Side Of The Moon.

You witness a band of seasoned campaigners high on confidence.

“We seemed to think we knew it all,” acknowledges Mason. “But it wasn’t entirely justified.

‘Strong following’

“It’s something quite prevalent in bands — you move on from starting something to gaining confidence, either through record sales or bigger crowds.”

Mason has this assessment of the post-Meddle, pre-Dark Side period: “We had conquered Europe, particularly France where we had a very strong following.

“But we were still lagging behind in the States. Quite a lot of Americans thought Dark Side was our first album because that’s when they hooked on to us.

“Before that, we could be described as an underground band playing big venues, but not stadiums.”

Dark Side also represents the transition from Pink Floyd as a democratic unit to one dominated by Waters’ songwriting.

There’s some great shots of the band experimenting with early synthesisers such as the EMS VCS3, which helped them make electronic instrumental On The Run.

The band talk avidly about how these amazing contraptions “can’t think for themselves”, all the more pertinent because of the current dismay at AI “scraping” the work of musicians.

We didn’t have access to the finer instruments of the period, but it was easier for us to use the simpler ones properly

Nick Mason

And, as Mason points out, On The Run wasn’t as ahead of its time as you may think.

“The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, who did the Doctor Who theme, had been all over the VCS3 for quite a while before we ever got our hands on one.

“We didn’t have access to the finer instruments of the period, but it was easier for us to use the simpler ones properly, to get more out of them.”

And just like the Fab Four in Get Back, it’s not all about the music for Pink Floyd. There’s some hilarious banter as they eat their rather basic lunches at Abbey Road.

“We spent a lot of our lives in that canteen,” recalls Mason. “It was probably run by people whose previous experience had been at the local primary school, but it worked perfectly well. We were very happy with the apple crumble!”

And were there any arguments?

“We were pretty good all the way through the recording,” he replies.

“We clearly started sparking a bit when it came to the mix [of Dark Side] and we eventually got Chris Thomas to help us.

“He gave us a brilliant independent view and did it for relatively little money.”

Looking back on that iconic album 52 years on from its release, Mason says: I’m absolutely pleased with what we did.

“It would be totally churlish to say I’m unhappy with any of it!”

Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

Hard-up parents promised savings of up to £8,000 a year as hundreds of schools open free breakfast clubs

HARD-UP parents are being promised savings of up to £8,000 a year as hundreds of schools open free breakfast clubs from today.

The scheme launches in 750 primary schools in England – offering half an hour of free childcare and a healthy meal before the school day begins.

Ministers say the savings come from combining the breakfast clubs, worth up to £450 a year, with 30 hours of free childcare for under-fives from September, and a £50 cap on branded school uniforms.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called it a “game-changing moment” for parents, giving them “breathing space” and boosting children’s chances.

He said: “Parents will no longer be hamstrung by rigid school hours and have the breathing space they need to beat the morning rush, attend work meetings and doctors’ appointments, or run errands.

“And crucially, it means better life chances for children.”

But unions warn the plan may be underfunded, with some schools already raising the alarm.

Paul Whiteman, General Secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, said “initial feedback” from schools was that the funding “just isn’t sufficient”.

The Government has previously insisted the funding will be enough to deliver the programme.

Urgent warning as 1000s of drivers slapped with parking fines of up to £170 despite PAYING

DRIVERS are being slapped with fines of up to £170 despite paying to park — because dodgy machines are missing digits off number plates.

Campaigner Lynda Eagan, who helps run a 47,000-member Facebook group, says “literally thousands” have been caught out by “sticky keys” and machines that let you pay without completing your plate.

She claimed some devices are “set up to trap people”, while the RAC has called for urgent reform and the return of a scrapped code of practice.

Matt Chambers, 35, was fined £100 in Worksop after Excel Parking claimed he only typed the letter “B” – a charge he insists is false.

Lee Rogers, 67, got a ticket in Rye when his machine printed just one digit, and 79-year-old Mary Hawken’s £170 fine was dropped only after her MP stepped in.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander admitted the system is broken and said the Government is working on a code of practice.

A spokesperson for trade body the British Parking Association declined to respond to the claims of faulty machines, but said someone who receives a parking charge they believe was issued in error should first contact the parking operator and provide “all the information that would be relevant for an appeal”.

Sometimes parking ticket machines break, but that does not mean that you can park for free.

Police can still give you a fine, so here is everything you need to know about much the fine is and if you can get it cancelled.

You may still face a fine for not having a parking ticket if the machine is broken, but you should be able to appeal the decision.

According to Citizens Advice, the fine can be cancelled, but only if there wasn’t another way to pay.

The penalty won’t be dropped if there was another, working machine nearby — so ensure you double check before leaving without paying.

Disabled pensioner has hit with £100 parking fine after ticket machine machine was blocked by debris

If you do decide to park, you should take a photograph of the broken machine as you’ll need it for your appeal should you end up getting fined.

More than half of drivers have successfully appealed parking fines handed out by local councils, an investigation by The Sun found in 2021.

But be careful, as some car parks will have a sign saying not to stop there if there’s no way to pay.

Should you ignore the sign and get a penalty, your appeal is very likely to be rejected.

Millionaire owner of ‘Britain’s biggest man cave’ faces eye-watering bill from council which demolished it

THE millionaire owner of “Britain’s biggest man cave” faces a £220,000 bill from the council which demolished it using taxpayers’ money.

Accountant Graham Wildin, 71, built the structure, with a bowling alley, casino and cinema, at the back of his home without planning permission in 2014.

Forest of Dean District Council has now started proceedings to reclaim from him the huge sum it spent demolishing the illegal 10,000sq/ft development last summer.

Wildin spent a decade fighting to preserve his leisure complex in Cinderford, Gloucs, and was even jailed for ignoring a demolition order.

The judge sentenced him to six weeks imprisonment suspended for 12 months, on the condition that the building be permanently stripped and decommissioned within 18 weeks.

The council said: “These funds were drawn from council approved resources, and recovery proceedings are actively underway to reclaim the full cost from the landowner.

This case highlights the critical importance of complying with planning regulations.”

“When individuals choose to ignore these rules, they not only act unlawfully, but place an unfair burden on the wider public.

“The council takes such breaches extremely seriously and will continue to act decisively to uphold the planning system and protect the interests of our residents.”

Wildin has been contacted for comment.

Bombshell poll reveals REFORM would win the most seats in Parliament if a General Election was held now

REFORM UK would win the most seats in Parliament if a General Election was held imminently, a major poll shows.

Nigel Farage’s party would secure 180 seats, leapfrogging both Labour and the Conservatives, who are projected to tie on 165 each.

Nigel Farage’s Reform UK would win the most seats in Parliament if a General Election was held imminently

The MRP projection by More in Common, based on 16,000 voters, would leave the country with no clear majority.

But Reform would be the largest single party.

The model forecasts Labour would lose 246 seats, with big names such as Angela Rayner, Yvette Cooper, Ed Miliband and Wes Streeting among the casualties.

An exclusive Survation poll for The Sun last week found Reform surging to 30 per cent in Red Wall seats.

More in Common director Luke Tryl said: “We are a long way from a general election and trying to predict the result is a fool’s errand.

“But what we can say for certain is that as of today British politics has fragmented to an unprecedented level.

“The coalition for change that elected Keir Starmer’s Government has splintered right and left.

Labour, having secured a historic victory now find themselves on the wrong side of a disillusioned electorate frustrated at the slow pace of change and some of the Government’s early missteps.”

£148m EuroMillions winner Adrian Bayford ‘downsizes’ in surprise move out of huge mansion ‘full of bad memories’

  • Anonymous winner£195,707,000

A UK ticket-holder scooped the record EuroMillions jackpot of £195 million on July 19 2022 – the biggest National Lottery win of all time.

The holder, who remains anonymous to this day, amassed the fortune with just one lucky ticket.

  • Joe and Jess Thwaite£184,262,899.10

Britain’s previous EuroMillions record holders were Joe and Jess Thwaite.

The couple won a record-breaking £184million jackpot in May 2022 and shared hopes of a Hawaiian holiday and a new horse box for their children’s ponies.

Joe bought his winning ticket online on May 10, 2022, and the following morning received an email with good news.

As he learnt of the huge win, he was in disbelief and initially kept it for himself as he did not want to disturb his wife, who was sleeping.

Joe, a communications sales engineer, and Jess, who runs a hairdressing salon with her sister, have been married for 11 years and have two children.

  • Colin and Chris Weir, £161,653,000

Colin and Christine Weir landed the colossal prize money in 2011 and were Europe’s second-biggest winners until someone in Italy won a jackpot worth £193m in 2019.

They splashed the cash at an astounding rate of £100,000 a week before tragedy struck.

But at the time of Colin’s death in December 2019 his share of the prize money had dwindled by around £40m.

He spent the millions living a life of luxury, forking out for sports cars, property and the football club he supported.

Colin and Christine divorced shortly before his death after being married for 38 years.

He left money for their children Carly and Jamie.

  • Adrian and Gillian Brayford £148,600,000

Adrian and Gillian won 190 million euros in a EuroMillions draw in August 2012, which came to just over £148 million.

But Adrian split from Gillian the following year because of the stress of the win.

The couple bought a Grade II listed estate in Cambridgeshire, complete with cinema and billiards room, but it was sold in 2021.

After divorcing in 2013, he failed to woo ex-sausage factory worker Marta Jarosz — but fell for stable girl Sam Burbidge.

She left him in 2017, taking 30 prize horses Adrian bought.

It might have worked out in the end for Adrian though as the former postman was seen smiling with ambulance worker Tracey Biles last year.

  • Frances and Patrick Connolly – £114,969,775

Former social worker and teacher Frances set up two charitable foundations after she and her husband hit the jackpot.

They scooped almost £115 million on New Year’s Day 2019.

She estimates that she has already given away £60 million to charitable causes, as well as friends and family.

  • Richard and Debbie Nuttall£61,000,000

The couple from Colne, Lancashire, took home £61 million on January 30 2024.

Both 54, they were enjoying a holiday in Fuerteventura, celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary.

But they then discovered the big EuroMillions win.

Richard revealed they originally thought they had won £2.60, but then received another email telling the pair to check their account.

Other eye-watering anonymous winners:

Another anonymous winner scooped up a prize of £123,458,008 in the June Superdraw rollover.

Following nine rollovers, one ticketholder bagged the £122,550,350 jackpot last April.

The successful participant chose to remain anonymous.

Another anonymous winner found their fortune during the Superdraw jackpot rollover in April 2018, securing £121,328,187.

NHS trusts could be sued for millions if they don’t protect female spaces after landmark court ruling, lawyer warns

NHS trusts will be hit with “slam dunk” lawsuits for millions of pounds if they fail to protect single-sex female spaces, a lawyer warns.

It comes after a ruling that transgender females are not legally women.

NHS trusts will be hit with lawsuits for millions of pounds if they fail to protect single-sex female spaces, a lawyer warns

Health bodies that fail to follow the Supreme Court judgment that a woman is defined by biological sex face sex discrimination cases and court action by staff and patients.

A leading health solicitor told The Sun: “If there are dozens of cases where the guidance is clear cut, the costs to the taxpayer, between damages, legal fees, and the time it will take, could spiral into the millions.”

He added there was little confidence the NHS could change its ways and legal action using the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision as a precedent would be a “slam dunk” — easy to win.

Previous NHS guidance said trans staff on single-sex wards should be treated according to how they identify themselves.

In June, one group of female nurses worried about undressing in front of a trans colleague sued Darlington Memorial Hospital after being told they needed re-education.

After last week’s Supreme Court ruling, Baroness Kishwer Falkner, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, vowed to pursue the NHS if it did not update its policies.

The NHS said: “We appreciate the need for revised guidance on same sex accommodation.

“We’re working with the government to provide further guidance.”

Knee-jerk policy changes in schools in response to the ruling should be opposed, the NASUWT teaching union said.

We must never allow prisoners the freedom to rule in our prisons

Terrorists can’t be in charge of prisons

BRITAIN’S simmering prison crisis is fast becoming a national scandal.

Prison officer chiefs say Muslim prisoners in one jail were exempt from searches by sniffer dogs after they complained on religious grounds.

From HMP Frankland, Manchester Arena terrorist Hashem Abedi viciously attacked four guards last week

Shockingly this is at HMP Frankland, the same high security lock-up where warped Manchester Arena terrorist Hashem Abedi viciously attacked four guards last week.

If the evil Abedi exploited this ruling to hide his improvised weapons safe in the knowledge he could evade security checks there will rightly be public outrage. How did it come to this?

Courageous prison officers who daily have to deal with violent Islamist extremists should never be exposed to risks in this way.

Too often virtue-signalling bosses in the justice system are bowing to the demands of dangerous inmates.

This madness is fuelling a rise in Islamist gang rule behind bars.

Many of Britain’s crumbling and overcrowded jails are already tinderboxes waiting to erupt.

The safety of frontline staff should always come before the wishes of terrorists and murderers.

As former prison governor Ian Acheson says, their welfare cannot be compromised because prison bosses fear accusations of racism.

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has called for a review into the HMP Frankland attack.

She must take immediate steps to end this security shambles, restore control and increase protection for guards.

Time for council axe

FOR too long, town hall fat cats have been splurging taxpayers’ money with abandon while local services have nosedived.

Reform leader Nigel Farage promises to take an Elon Musk-style axe to wasteful council spending if he wins in local elections.

It will strike a chord with skint voters sick of seeing their money being disgracefully squandered.

Six figure salaries and a work from home culture are common while many impose maximum council tax rises.

Yet they have dismally failed to get to grips with basic problems such as the potholes that plague our roads.

Neither Labour nor the Tories have highlighted this appalling waste.

It’s hardly surprising when councils run by both parties are the ones running up the massive bills.

Four savvy ways to avoid unnecessary fines on days out this summer

IT is easy to get caught out on the roads, especially if you’re travelling somewhere new.

If you’re out on day trips or enjoying city breaks this summer, keep money in your pocket by avoiding unnecessary fines.

CLEAN AIR FARE: If you’re taking a city break, many places now have clean air or low emission zones and some of them charge private cars for driving through, including Bristol, Birmingham and London.

Other cities charge vans and larger vehicles.

If your car doesn’t comply, you’ll need to pay, and face a fine if you don’t.

So check before you travel and, if you do have to pay, use official websites to avoid rogue operators.

READ MORE MONEY SAVING TIPS

STEER CLEAR OF SCHOOLS: Many councils have put in no-drive zones around schools during drop-off and pick-up times.

Drive through and you’ll be hit with a fine of £50 or more.

It can be easy to miss the signs, especially if you’re in an unfamiliar area or your sat-nav takes you that way.

TOLL ORDERS: There are 20 major tolls dotted around in the UK, including 18 river crossings.

One of the busiest is the M25’s Dartford Crossing.

You need to pay the Dart Charge by midnight the day after you cross.

Glasgow driver slapped with parking fine outside own home

But it’s easy to forget and then receive a fine of up to £70.

If you use a toll road regularly, set up an automatic payment.

Anyone can set up a Dart Charge account and link it to a payment card, so that the crossing fee is taken automatically.

Pre-pay account holders also get 20 per cent off.

PARKING FINES: Getting a fine can ruin your day. Manchester City Council issued the most last year with 460,000 tickets.

Read signs as sneaky restrictions can catch you out.

If you haven’t got cash, parking apps such as RingGo and PaybyPhone downloaded and linked to your bank can be helpful, but you will pay more if you use them.
