Emmerdale’s Mackenzie Boyd ‘goes missing’ ahead of John and Aaron wedding

Emmerdale spoilers have teased one character goes missing next week despite them planning to be at the wedding of Aaron Dingle and John Sugden, with a new mystery

There’s a new mystery on Emmerdale next week it seems, with spoilers suggesting a character goes AWOL in the build-up to a wedding.

While an explanation is hinted at, fans will no doubt fearing the worst amid recent trouble with killer John Sugden. It’s his wedding to Aaron Dingle next week, and a key guest appears to be missing.

So has something bad happened to Mackenzie Boyd amid their run-in with enemy John? Perhaps not, as he’s involved in a separate storyline – but it is a bit weird that Mackenzie would go missing on Aaron’s big day just as things got heated with John.

According to the spoilers, as Aaron and John prepare to say their vows Mack has mysteriously vanished and no one knows where he is. Whether he shows up remains to be seen.

That said, he finds himself caught up in Ross Barton’s drama with his new brother Lewis Barton next week. After the pair try to steal Lewis’ cannabis plants from his secret farm in the attic of his home, Lewis catches them and Mack becomes trapped.

Prior to this, Ross gets Lewis’ keys and manages to get Mack to help him, with them soon finding the farm in the attic. But when Lewis gets an alert on his phone that suggests an intruder is in the attic he opens up a camera app and makes a discovery.

He realises it’s Mack and calls out Ross who he’s with, wanting an explanation from both of them – seemingly trapping Mack in the process amid the wedding. Lewis agrees to let Mack go on one condition, he wants to know the truth about his his mother Emma Barton died.

Whether something else happens to Mack after this and it causes him to go AWOL remains to be seen. There’s also every chance he’s vanished because he’s simply trapped at the home of Lewis.

It comes as John risks being exposed next week when more than one secret threatens to come to light.

While an explanation is hinted at, fans will no doubt fearing the worst

Next week it’s confirmed that his ex Aidan has woken from his coma, and soon John is fearful Aidan will expose his lies and the truth about their past.

Then there’s the fact the lake is being dredged due to the slurry leak, caused by John to frame Mack last week. Viewers know that John dumped Nate Robinson’s body in this very lake after killing him in September – so is this the moment the body is found?

With that and Aidan being awake and Aaron having pre-wedding jitters, not to mention John plotting an escape, will the big day go ahead? Will they even make it to the vows? Of course the last thing John will need on top of all of this is for Mack to target him once more – so might John be pushed over the edge?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok , Snapchat , Instagram , Twitter , Facebook , YouTube and Threads .

Stunned Coronation Street fans find ‘missing’ soap star living it up in Cannes

This Coronation Street star turned a few heads after he was spotted at this year’s film festival – not least the hordes of Corrie fans who have yearned for his return to the cobbles

Coronation Street fans were left stunned as one of the soap’s beloved actors swapped the Weatherfield cobbles for the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Ryan Prescott, who is best known for playing Ryan Connor, was recently spotted on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival.

Despite not revealing why he was attending the star-studded event, fans confessed they’ve “missed” seeing the 36-year-old on their TV screens recently, but agreed he looked fantastic mingling with the celebs. Ryan, who has also had stints in Emmerdale and Doctors, looked incredibly smart in a black suit and bow tie, posing with friends and soaking up the atmosphere of the annual festival, which runs until May 24.

Sharing snaps on Instagram, he simply captioned them: “CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2025.” Fans were quick to compliment the actor’s appearance after the photos were posted.

One fan commented: “Miss you when you’re not in Corrie but pleased you are having an amazing time,” while another added: “Looks like you are having a great time! You also clean up nice!”

A third chimed in: “Chuffed for you,” while a fourth fan remarked: “Looking dapper my brother.”

Content cannot be displayed without consent

How Ryan managed to secure a spot at the exclusive event remains a mystery. As one would expect, the Cannes Film Festival is typically reserved for film industry professionals and accredited participants.

The festival is now an exclusive affair with restricted access, necessitating a badge for entry, keeping most of the festivities out of reach for the average Joe. This year’s event launched with much fanfare on May 13 and will run this Saturday, drawing in A-listers such as Nicole Kidman and Amal Clooney.

Meanwhile, Ryan’s entrance to Coronation Street came in 2018 when he became the much-loved Ryan Connor, stepping into Sol Heras’s shoes as the third actor to take up the role.

Despite his character’s on-screen drama, Ryan’s off-screen life is seemingly tranquil. The Merseyside-born actor made waves when he appeared in Emmerdale as Flynn Buchanan – Aaron Dingle’s romantic pursuit – before gracing the streets of Weatherfield.

Scoring the part was Ryan’s career milestone, leaving him initially gobsmacked by the limelight, even leading to fans hounding him for autographs post his stint in the ITV soap which lasted for 12 episodes.

Before hitting it big on the cobbles, Ryan secured parts in well-known shows such as Holby City, The Syndicate, Doctors and Casualty. But success didn’t come easy, as he encountered obstacles along the path to fame.

Confirming his Corrie gig opened the floodgates of online vitriol, with Ryan recounting to The Mirror: “I’ve had a few… you always get the occasional Facebook message. There’s always haters out there. Nothing too crazy but people give their opinion.

“Someone will say something like ‘I much preferred the other Ryan’, or something like that. I never reply. That’s where people go wrong.”

Aside from his TV appearances, the actor is quite the globe-trotter, frequently sharing snaps on Instagram from his globetrotting adventures. His passport boasts stamps from Thailand, Amsterdam, Monaco, and a significant part of the United States – yet he always finds his way back to his roots in the north of England.

May 16 (UPI) — A bronze statue of first lady Melania Trump was stolen from its perch in a city in her home country of Slovenia, five years after it replaced a wooden sculpture damaged by arson.

Police confirmed Friday they are now investigating after the bronze statue went missing earlier in the week from the Slovenian village of Rozno.

“[Police] conducted an inspection of the crime scene and collected information. The investigating judge and the district state prosecutor were informed about the theft,” Slovenian National Police Force spokesperson Alenka Drenik Rangus said in a statement Friday.

The Slovenian newspaper Delo reported the statue was “sawed off” at the bottom.

Officials unveiled the bronze figure of the first lady in 2020 to replace a wooden statue that was damaged after being lit on fire on July 4 of that year.

The statue site is near the first lady’s hometown of Sevnica in central Slovenia.

Artist Brad Downey constructed the bronze version, based on the original wooden statue crafted by conceptual artist Ales Zupevc, aka Maxi.

The damaged wood statue was quickly removed to a museum in Slovenia.

Bronze was chosen for the replacement to ensure it was fireproof.

Woman missing nearly three weeks in California mountains found alive

May 16 (UPI) — A 27-year-old Georgia woman missing nearly three weeks in the California mountains has been found alive, according to authorities.

Tiffany Slaton of Jeffersonville was reported missing by her family on April 29 after they had not heard from her for nine days. She had gone on a solo camping trip in the Shaver Lake/Huntington Lake area on April 20.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the woman was found Wednesday near Lake Edison in a cabin belonging to Vermilion Valley Resort.

According to authorities, the owner of the wilderness resort found her while inspecting the property in preparation for opening it to the public for the summer season.

Snowplows had only cleared nearby roads that day, which permitted the owner to access the property, the sheriff’s office said.

“The owner said he had left a cabin unlocked as a precaution for this exact situation, where someone who is lost could seek shelter and increase their chances of surviving the outdoor elements and harsh weather,” the sheriff’s office said.

After finding Slaton, the unnamed owner contact the sheriff’s office, and deputies drove to meet them.

Slaton was reportedly in good condition, though she was dehydrated. She was transported to a hospital for further treatment, and her family in Georgia has been notified.

“Detectives are now arranging to meet with Tiffany to learn more about her timeline of events and overall experience,” the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.

Vermilion Valley Resort celebrated Slaton’s discovery on social media.

“We are so happy Tiffany is safe! It is amazing what she went through. It is incredible what she has accomplished,” the resort said in a statement. “We went in to open the resort, found her using our cabin and brought her down the mountain to safety.”

The sheriff’s office had launched a search for the woman, during which it was discovered that she had last been seen April 24 at a general store.

From May 6 to Saturday, the sheriff’s search-and-rescue team conducted a full-scale search of the mountains for Slaton that spanned nearly 600 square miles, it said, adding that efforts were hampered by snow.

Huge £1 billion train upgrade in chaos as locals fume over ‘missing’ feature

Bold plans to transform the railway system as part of a £1 billion upgrade has garnered heavy criticism as bosses confirm new electrified trains will be missing one specific amenity

Railway plans to transform connectivity in south Wales have sparked heavy backlash amongst locals. Touted as the ‘Welsh Tube‘, the £1 billion mega project – which was first proposed back in 2013 – offers a ground-breaking solution to long waits and traditional timetables stagnating travel in the region.

But upon completion, a 105-mile long network will see 36 brand new tram-trains carry tourists and commuters across the core Valley Lines, linking areas such as Cardiff with Coryton, Rhymney, Aberdare, and Treherbet – with certain journeys running every five minutes in the day. As previously reported, the South Wales Metro project will operate on a colour-coded map and allow passengers to ‘tap in and out’ with contactless payment barriers.

Those living in or around Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, and Treherbert will have access to four trains per hour (every 15 minutes) while those around Caerphilly will get six trains per hour and Pontypridd will see 12 trains per hour (every five minutes) running to the Welsh capital. With new electric tram-trains already starting test runs in the Valleys – the project is nearing its first phase.

However, locals weren’t too happy when they discovered the state-of-the-art vehicles did not feature any onboard toilets. According to Wales Online, one person described the lack of loos as ‘absolute madness’, adding: “We certainly are going backward in Wales.”

Another commented: “This is shocking, I have a funny feeling there’s going to be lots of urine on the floor on a Friday and Saturday night,” while a third penned: “People need toilets, what’s with the Welsh government?”

Others were quick to defend the decision, arguing that Tube trains, buses, and cars do not have toilets either. “Some people would whinge about winning the lottery!” one reader fumed. “How many buses have toilets on board?”

Another argued: “If you put toilets in they have to be accessible to all and as a result the area lost to seating and standing is huge. You also have to take the trains out of service to empty the tanks because you can’t just dump it on the tracks anymore. It’s much better to do away with them and have them in fixed locations so they have the space to do it properly and they have proper access to electricity, water and sewerage.”

When asked about the backlash, a Transport for Wales (TfW) spokesperson told the Mirror that it is currently ‘testing’ a brand-new modern Class 398 tram-trains that will run on electric and battery as part of the South Wales Metro. These will have the ability to run on-street as well as on the rail network, but ‘global rolling stock market’ for this type of train-train with onboard toilets is ‘limited’.

“They are built to quickly move as many people as possible and adding toilets on board would significantly reduce the capacity of the trains,” the spokesperson added. “This type of train is used successfully in other cities within the UK and no other Metro system in the UK runs this type of tram with toilets onboard.

“We want to ensure our passengers still have access to toilet facilities when using our network. To do this, we’re installing 10 new*, fully accessible toilets at key locations across these lines and upgrading our existing station facilities, so that passengers can be confident a toilet will always be available within a 20-minute journey on our network.”

*In addition to the existing toilet facilities across the South Wales Metro area, 10 stations getting new toilets are Abercynon, Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, Tonypandy, Treherbert, Cwmbach, Llwynypia, Merthyr Vale, Penrhiwceiber and Treorchy.

Suspended LAFD union president disputes allegations of missing receipts: ‘I’ve been unjustly accused’

Freddy Escobar stood on the sidewalk outside his former workplace waving a green thumb drive and a stack of papers that he said would clear his name.

The suspended president of the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City said he couldn’t get into the office where he’s worked since 2018. He said the union’s parent organization had changed the locks to the building and the gate code to the parking garage.

He rang the doorbell to deliver his evidence, including photos of receipts, to counter allegations that he hadn’t documented many of his credit card purchases. But there was no answer.

“Wow,” he said. As he turned to face news cameras, Escobar closed his eyes for a moment. “An organization that I would have died for is not giving me an opportunity now to present to them what they’ve been looking for.”

The dramatic scene unfolded Friday morning outside the union’s office in Historic Filipinotown, four days after the International Assn. of Fire Fighters suspended Escobar and two other union officers over financial improprieties, including “serious problems” with missing receipts.

The IAFF also placed UFLAC under conservatorship, a first for any of the local firefighter unions overseen by the Washington, D.C.-based organization, a spokesperson said. The unprecedented move followed Times reports about the IAFF’s financial audit as well as massive overtime payments to Escobar and other union officials.

IAFF General President Edward Kelly disclosed the audit’s findings in a letter to UFLAC members Monday.

From July 2018 through November 2024, Escobar initiated 1,957 transactions on his UFLAC credit card, totaling $311,498, the letter said. More than 70% of those transactions — amounting to $230,466 — had no supporting documentation.

“The auditors could not ascertain the purpose of these transactions,” Kelly wrote in the letter. He added that an additional 157 transactions — amounting to $35,397 — were only partially supported by required documentation.

“This means there is no way to determine whether $265,862.34 in dues money spent by President Escobar without documentation was for legitimate union expenditures,” the letter said.

The audit found that two other UFLAC officials — former Secretary Adam Walker and former Treasurer Domingo Albarran Jr. — together had more than $530,000 in credit card transactions with no receipts or partial documentation. Walker did not respond to a request for comment, and Albarran declined to comment.

In all, about $800,000 in credit card purchases were not properly documented, the letter said.

Vice Presidents Chuong Ho and Doug Coates were suspended and accused of breaching their fiduciary duties in “failing to enforce UFLAC policy.” Neither responded to a request for comment.

Escobar arrived at the union office Friday morning to speak to reporters at a press conference he had called to refute the allegations. He said he was unaware he was being audited and was never asked to provide his receipts.

Under UFLAC policy, receipts are required for all credit card expenditures, along with an explanation of the expense, including the names of those present and the business reason for the expenditure.

Escobar said the records he was holding included everything the IAFF said was missing. But he also said he did not tally up the totals and did not know how much money he was accounting for. All the receipts he was providing, he said, had already been uploaded into the union’s expense system.

“Whatever they say I don’t have, I have,” he said.

He said he compiled years of documentation, including more than 1,500 receipts, meeting minutes and explanations for his expenses, which included transactions for gas, food, hotels and Uber rides. He said none were personal expenses.

Asked why he expensed Uber rides when he had a take-home car provided by the union, he said the rides were for members doing union business.

Accounting problems had been flagged earlier by auditors for UFLAC, who in March 2024 highlighted “significant deficiencies” because officers were failing to properly document their expenditures.

Despite that warning, Escobar made 339 transactions in 2024 using his UFLAC credit card — for a total of $71,671 — without submitting a single receipt, Kelly wrote.

Escobar said the auditors never spoke to him.

“What’s a warning? It was an audit that said that we could always do better and that always occurs — we could always do better,” he said.

Asked what could have been improved, since he said he had all his receipts, he replied: “Probably more detail. … Explanations, fine tuning.”

He called on the IAFF “do the right thing” and reinstate him as president. In the meantime, he said he will go back to work as an LAFD captain at a fire station in Boyle Heights.

In a statement Friday, IAFF spokesperson Ryan Heffernan said that since March 2024 and as recently as last month, Escobar was “repeatedly urged — in written communication and face-to-face meetings — to fulfill his fiduciary duties to the members of Local 112 and submit proper documentation for all expenditures.”

“Despite this, the forensic audit, issued in May 2025, confirmed serious deficiencies in Mr. Escobar’s expense reconciliation and record-keeping practices between 2018-2024,” the statement said.

Last month, a Times investigation found that Escobar and other top union officers have for years been padding their paychecks with overtime while also collecting five- to six-figure union stipends.

Escobar made about $540,000 in 2022, the most recent year for which records of both his city and union earnings are available. He more than doubled his base salary of $184,034 with overtime payouts that year, earning more than $424,500 from the city in pay and benefits, payroll data show.

He collected an additional $115,962 stipend from the union, according to its most recent federal tax filing. He reported working 48 hours a week on union and related duties, while records provided by the city for that year show he picked up an average of roughly 30 hours of overtime a week on firefighting shifts — a total of about 78 hours of work each week.

On Friday, he disputed his total earnings, saying “it’s a lot less than that,” though he did not provide evidence.

British couple give up French dream to return to UK after missing one thing

Natalie and Andrew Solomon, along with their young children and parents, sold their rural Shropshire home around a decade ago to swap it for a French château and 20 hectares of land

The chateau
The British family are giving this beautiful home up to enjoy Sunday roasts

A British couple are waving goodbye to their French château life to return to the UK, with dreams of a Sunday roast in a cosy pub firmly in their minds.

About ten years back, Natalie and Andrew Solomon traded their Shropshire countryside abode for an enchanting French château, complete with 20 hectares of sprawling land. The adventurous Solomons, along with their parents and little ones, embarked on this continental journey without a hint of regret.

Once settled, they crafted luxury stays within two bespoke treehouses, each boasting hot tubs and serving up hearty English breakfasts and butter chicken curries, a delightful twist from the usual French fare. Having built a flourishing enterprise, the family is now set to return to Blighty, yearning for the closeness of friends and relatives.

Their beloved Château de Memanat, with its vast estate, has hit the market with a price tag of €1.35m. At 38, Mrs Solomon reflects on their journey, noting that the creation of the two treehouses in 2017 and 2023 was always part of their master plan, following an initial stint renting out a local gite and running their château as a bed and breakfast.

One of the treehouses
The Solomons have been putting people up in treehouses

The whimsically named Castel De L’arbre and Cabanon Perche treehouses, decked out in castle themes, are available for holidaymakers starting at €245 per night for a duo. The Solomons credit their success in France’s Nouvelle-Aquitaine region to their quintessentially British hospitality, which they feel offers a warmer welcome than the traditional French approach.

“It will be a bit of a change, returning home,” the mother-of-two Mrs Solomon confessed, contemplating the shift back to British shores. The kids were two and four when we came here, and my parents came as well. It was an adventure: an out-of-our-comfort-zone type situation.

“We wanted the kids to be bilingual; my daughter was learning English and French at the same time. It was the age-old challenge: how do you work and have kids? But here, that has worked very well for us. We gutted our house in Shropshire, sold it and could buy this château with 20 hectares in France. It’s going to be an emotional upheaval for us when we leave – this is where we raised our family.”

Though they got the lion’s share of the money to buy their château for €800,000 from the sale of their home, the family were also helped in part by Mrs Solomon’s parents. Mrs Solomon explained that, at the start, things were difficult for the family in rural France.

“If something happens at home, you know who to call,” she said. “But here, it was like, ‘How do you even say plumber?’. We have overcome all of that. The kids have been able to be free and just be kids here.

“We’ve not just dipped our toes in – we’ve done ten years here, we’ve built these two treehouses. It’s very rural and spread out here. There’s nobody on the roads and there’s rolling hills and valleys… It’s beautiful.”

The château

But despite enjoying their ten-year adventure in France, the family say they’re excited to return to Blighty. Mrs Solomon admits that one thing she’s looking forward to is a regular Sunday roast at a local pub.

Mrs Solomon noted: “If you turn up somewhere here at half one, they would be like: ‘Dream on, kitchen’s closed’.”

Mrs Solomon is looking forward to experiencing British culture once more, saying: “To walk to a pub and get a Sunday roast will be great.”

Mrs Solomon described life in France as “It’s a slower pace of life in France. Where we live, we are probably about 30 years behind the UK. I do think there’s more of a community here. Where we send our kids to school is another big influence [on our move].

“Here, school runs until 6pm, but the holidays are shorter in the UK. Obviously, the kids are going to be great at French, but when they started school, they didn’t speak French and the teachers didn’t speak English.”

Mrs Solomon concedes that she thinks their British approach to hospitality has won over many families used to less-accommodating French hosts. Mrs Solomon admits: “English hospitality is much better. I try to give everything to the guests: I am the host and you are the guest. French guests say, ‘Thank you for being so accommodating’, but I’m like, ‘That’s my job!’.”

Mrs Solomon adds that though they’ve made the decision to return home, when they make the move will depend on when Château de Memanat sells and, once it does, how long it takes them to find another home. Discussing their hopes for a new home, she notes they are keen to build luxury treehouses like the ones they’ve experienced, this time in the UK.

3 dead, 9 still missing after suspected migrant vessel capsizes near San Diego

May 5 (UPI) — Three people are dead after a “panga” boat washed ashore Monday morning in southern California. Based on survivors’ reports, the craft seems to have been a vessel used for migrant travel.

“It is a suspected migrant smuggling boat,” said Petty Officer Chris Sappey, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson.

At least nine other people are still missing.

“Human smuggling, no drugs — the ones coming up from south of the border,” he specified.

According to Sappey, at least two children were on board. However, the exact number of people allegedly on board the vessel was not immediately clear.

Four survivors were given medical care in the morning hours after a boat came ashore at Torrey Pines State Park near San Diego, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Multiple local agencies — including the San Diego Police Department, nearby fire departments, Del Mar Lifeguards and U.S. border patrol agents — aided in the search that authorities had described as a “mass casualty incident.”

The emergency response began when the vessel was spotted near the 12000 block of North Torrey Pines Road after it reportedly capsized at around 6:30 a.m. local time near Del Mar.

“There were estimated to be about 18 people on the beach, so we upgraded this to a major medical response due the number of potential victims that we had on the beach with this boat,” confirmed Jorge Sanchez, deputy fire chief with the Encinitas Fire Department.

Sanchez said earlier it was unclear if it was a suspected case of human smuggling, adding that “several resources” were walking up and down the beach as well to making sure “that no one is missed.”

Authorities search for missing man after kayak capsized on the American River

Authorities were searching Saturday for a kayaker who fell into the water along the American River near Auburn, Calif., the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.

The missing man was on a kayak with another man when their vessel capsized Friday evening in fast-running water beneath the No Hands Bridge near Auburn, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The other man reached nearby rocks and safely made it back to shore, the Sheriff’s Office said. The missing man wasn’t identified, and officials said it wasn’t known whether he might still be alive.

“It’s tough to say,” said Elise Soviar, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. “You never want to give up hope until you know.”

Authorities started to search for the missing kayaker on Friday. A dive team also went out on the water on Saturday morning, she said.

While the river might look inviting during a sunny day, authorities say people should avoid going into the water during this time of year.

“The water is very, very swift and it’s very, very cold because it’s coming from the mountains and this is a known dangerous portion of the American River,” she said.

The Sheriff’s Office teamed up with Cal Fire’s Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit on the search. State Parks, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol also offered assistance, according to a social media post from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.

Amazon issues update on major Alexa changes coming to millions of speakers and warns several key features are missing

AMAZON has officially updated customers on a change coming to millions of its speakers.

More than 100,000 people are understood to already be using Alexa+, which was unveiled at an AI event in New York last year.

The new and ultra-smart version of Alexa, hailed as “remarkable” by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, promises a more human-like interaction thanks to generative AI.

That might sound small compared to the 600 million Alexa devices worldwide, but it marks a big step forward. Alexa+, first introduced in February, is being gradually expanded to more users over the coming months.

This upgraded assistant is designed to handle more complex tasks: from booking restaurants to suggesting recipes and managing smart home gadgets, all with less user effort.

It’s a big shift away from the old Alexa’s scripted answers.

Instead, Alexa+ generates responses on the fly, much like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini, making conversations feel smoother and more responsive.

However, many of the headline-grabbing features shown in early demos are still missing.

According to Tech Edt, Alexa+ can’t yet generate bedtime stories, recommend gifts, or place food delivery orders through services like Grubhub.

Jassy admitted during the May 2 earnings call that Alexa+ remains “primitive,” with multi-step task accuracy currently sitting between 30 per cent and 60 per cent.

Still, Amazon’s goal is to push that figure to 90 per cent as its Nova Act browsing engine improves.

Amazon’s hardware chief Panos Panay described the new Alexa as knowing “almost every instrument in your life” — from smart home devices and mobile apps to the people you’re connected with.

That means Alexa+ should, eventually, help you handle everything from turning off the lights and adjusting your thermostat to ordering dinner or finding the perfect birthday gift.

But it’s not just about what Alexa+ can do — it’s also about how it does it.

The assistant now speaks with more expressive, natural voices, and it’s better at handling pauses, stumbles, and emotional cues in your speech.

For example, if you start a sentence and change your mind halfway, Alexa+ should still understand.

That said, the rollout hasn’t been entirely smooth.

Some features expected at launch have been delayed because they didn’t meet Amazon’s release standards.

The Washington Post reported that functions like visual recognition of family members, personalised chore reminders, and certain U.S.-only services like Grubhub ordering have been pushed back by at least two months.

Another controversial point is data management.

While Alexa+ can now read and summarise uploaded documents — such as legal contracts or family recipes, users currently can’t delete these files on their own.

Instead, they must contact Amazon support, and even then, some data might remain on record.

Only newer Echo Show devices (like the Echo Show 8, 10, and 15) currently support Alexa+, meaning owners of older Echo models or certain Fire TV products will need to upgrade if they want to access the new assistant.

There’s also a web version at Alexa.com, but a related project known internally as Metis — a chatbot designed to compete with ChatGPT — hasn’t launched yet.

What is Alexa?

If you’ve never heard of Alexa, here’s what you need to know…

  • Alexa is an “intelligent” personal assistant built by Amazon.
  • You can find her on several different devices, including Amazon’s Echo speakers.
  • Alexa responds to voice commands, and can talk back to you.
  • She can perform thousands of different tasks, including telling you about the news or weather.
  • But she can do more complex things too, like ordering a pizza or arranging an Uber taxi pick-up.
  • To activate Alexa, you need to say “Alexa” to an Amazon Echo speaker.
  • Because she’s powered by artificial intelligence, Alexa is constantly getting smarter.
  • Alexa will also get more used to your voice, and better understand what you want her to do over time.

Miami Grand Prix: Lando Norris ‘very happy’ after qualifying despite missing out on pole to Max Verstappen

In McLaren’s view, Red Bull have not been painting the most accurate picture of the competitive picture between the two teams.

“Red Bull, they are very good at making fast cars,” Stella said. “They are very exceptionally good, I would say, at driving fast cars, and they are extremely good also in creating the narrative to their advantage.

“They exploit every possible opportunity to stay in the competition, and some of these opportunities sometimes is to create the narrative, like, ‘oh, we are making miracles here, the others should win every single practice session and qualifying and race.’

“This is the narrative created by some of our competitors, which we read occasionally and then we change the page and we focus on ourselves.”

The grid sets up an intriguing race. The title contenders are in reverse order, with an interloper between Norris and Piastri in the form of Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.

And Norris scents an opportunity to nail his first victory since the opening race of the season in Australia back in March.

In qualifying, he made errors at the last corner on both his laps, each time costing about 0.2secs, so he knows the pace is in the car.

“Max has always been good in qualifying and as a team we have struggled a little more in qualifying, whether that’s set-up or what, I’m not too sure,” Norris said.

“We know the Red Bulls are running high downforce, which allows them especially with the DRS (in qualifying) to be a lot more competitive. But it’s a long race and we know we have good pace in both conditions.

“I don’t just expect competition from Max. Kimi’s been quick all weekend and Oscar has been as well. So yeah, I just expect a tough race from all accounts.”

Holidaymakers’ vehicles damaged and others missing as unauthorised car parks pop up

North Somerset Council has been cracking down on the parking issues around the Bristol Airport that have been causing issues for the community and holiday makers

Holidaymakers using Bristol Airport have returned to find their cars damaged and with unexplained mileage after parking in unofficial ‘airport’ car parks.

The local council has now stepped up efforts to clamp down on this practice, which has been “blighting” the countryside and causing problems for locals. North Somerset Council’s intervention follows concerns that fields near Bristol Airport were being used as makeshift car parks for thousands of vehicles. This was not only causing issues for the local community but also impacting holidaymakers who were unaware their cars were being left at these “unauthorised” sites.

Some of these vehicles had even been abandoned in the open on local roads without any security measures in place. Bristol Airport funds a Planning and Parking Enforcement officer to address the parking issues around the airport. In June last year, the airport contributed £50,000 towards hiring an officer for 12 months, with an additional £50,000 set to follow to ensure the role.

Among the successful actions taken by the officers was the clearing of a plot near Hyatts Wood Road, which had been overrun with parked cars. Thanks to council intervention, this agricultural field, capable of accommodating 1,500 cars, has now been cleared.

Enforcement notices were issued at 10 different fields, meaning these sites have permitted development rights but can only be used for a maximum of 28 days per year. After this period, usage would become a criminal offence.

These include: A field near Newditch Farm, which can park up to 560 cars; Land south of Bridgwater Road, which can hold over 1,900 cars; Land west of Bridle Cottage, which can accommodate more than 900 cars.

Additional probes have been conducted at a number of alternative sites. Part of this included halting parking on a parcel of land, which has now been restored to its previous state and settling an agreement that demands the replanting of three protected trees that were felled pre-2014 to make room for parking.

Earlier this year, North Somerset Council’s Trading Standards bods urged passengers jetting off from Bristol Airport to keep their wits about them when securing airport parking online due to dodgy dealings by these unscrupulous car park operators.

This caution followed a series of gripes relating to local car parking services that had left holiday-goers high and dry and their motors in jeopardy. Fuming customers who availed themselves of such services came back to find the companies couldn’t locate their vehicles, be it temporarily or in some cases, permanently lost.

Council hotshot Matt Lenny, director of healthy and sustainable communities, stressed: “It’s all about making sure you’re confident that the provider is good before you start and it’s all about what you do before you book. Read the terms and conditions, make sure you’ve looked at some of the reviews. We would ask people to look for the Park Mark, the symbol of the British Parking Association.”

Bristol Airport and the Council are set to hold a meeting with parish councillors to discuss areas of concern, with a further parking meeting scheduled later this month for representatives from all local parishes to address major hotspots.

Tottenham opponents Bodo/Glimt in chaos as they face missing HALF their team for crunch Europa League clash

TOTTENHAM’S Europa League semi-final opponents Bodo/Glimt face an absentee crisis ahead of Thursday’s first-leg showdown.

The Norwegian champions are already without three players due to suspension, including influential skipper Patrick Berg.

But now they are sweating on injuries to key centre-back Odin Bjortuft and winger Ole Blomberg.

Ever-present Bjortuft, 26, was forced off early in the second half of Bodo’s 3-0 league win over KFUM on Sunday with a groin complaint.

Bodo boss Kjetil Knutsen said after the game: “I do not know anything. I never enjoy a player laying down, but the medical staff are looking into it.”

Bjortuft is now a doubt for this week’s trip to North London, along with wideman Blomberg who missed the KFUM game completely due to an injury picked up earlier this month.

Skipper Berg, 27, is banned, due to too many yellow cards, along with midfield partner Hakon Evjen and striker Andreas Helmersen.

The latter netted a crucial goal in the quarter-final triumph over Italian giants Lazio, which added to their impressive list of scalps this season.

Knutsen’s side have already beaten Olympiacos, FC Twente and Besiktas this season.

While they also gave potential final opponents Manchester United a scare by going 2-1 up at Old Trafford in November, only to lose 3-2 thanks to a Rasmus Hojlund double.

Bodo’s domestic campaign has only just kicked off, but they are unbeaten in four league games, winning three of them.

Spurs’ season – and possibly the future of boss Ange Postecoglou – hinges on them going all the way in Europe.

That is after an horrendous league term where they have lost NINETEEN games, with their latest disasterclass coming at Anfield on Sunday where a 5-1 thrashing handed Liverpool the title.

Postecoglou has been without multiple key players due to injury this season but goes into the Bodo game only worrying about the fitness of captain Son Heung-min.

The South Korean, 32, has missed the last four games with a foot injury.

Eubank fined after missing weight limit before Benn showdown | Boxing News

Chris Eubank Jr fined £375,000 after missing the weight limit for Saturday’s grudge match with Conor Benn.

Chris Eubank Jr will be fined 375,000 pounds ($500,000) after hitting the scales 14g (0.5oz) more than the weight limit for Saturday’s long-awaited fight with fellow Briton Conor Benn at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Benn came in lighter than expected at 71kg (156.4lb) with the limit for the 12-round Ring Magazine middleweight bout set at 72.57kg (160lb).

Eubank was 72.597kg (160.05lb) in the second attempt at weighing-in behind closed doors at a London hotel.

Both boxers have agreed a rehydration clause that bars them from gaining more than 4.54kg (10lb) between Friday’s weigh-in and a further check on Saturday morning.

The pair will come face-to-face at a ceremonial weigh-in later on Friday.

Eubank, 35, with a 34-3 record and 25 knockouts, has previously fought at super-middle, while Benn, 28 and unbeaten in 23 fights with 14 knockouts, has been mostly a welterweight, two classes down.

Eubank is the IBO middleweight champion and has already been fined 100,000 pounds ($133,000) by the British Boxing Board of Control for slapping Benn with an egg at a news conference in February.

The fight between the sons of former world champions and archrivals Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn was called off in 2022, when Benn tested positive for trace amounts of the fertility drug clomifene.

The World Boxing Council cleared Benn of intentional doping in 2023, saying a “highly elevated consumption of eggs” was a reasonable explanation for the failed tests.

The pair appeared together at a news conference on Thursday, with Eubank speaking of the pain of his brother Sebastian’s death and his difficult relationship with his father.

“These things are what pain is to me,” he said. “The weight cut, the rehydration clause, these are all things that are not an issue, that are not important.”

Eubank Sr has called the fight a circus and his son a “disgrace” for smashing the egg in Benn’s face.
