Brighton is Britain’s most travel-obsessed city where locals plan more trips than rest of UK

People in Brighton book flights and travel 14% more than the UK average but resident of major places like London and Manchester haven’t even made it into the top three most travel-obsessed cities

The UK’s most travel-obsessed city, with people booking more trips away than anywhere else in the country, has been revealed.

Residents of this location fly away and visit different countries almost a staggering 14% more than the national average. Sun and fun seekers living in Brighton are the most consumed with booking a flight and jetting off for a few days compared to people living in any other part of the UK, including London and Manchester. The seaside city is a huge travel destination in itself and with major festivals and the vibrant art scene drawing people in to visit.

Despite this, people who live in Brighton take more holidays, visit more countries and plan more trips than anyone else in the UK. A close second to the seaside city is Reading and Liverpool in third.

Most people might expect London to fly high in this holiday list but the capital has only come in tenth on this list, alongside Derby. The research by ID Mobile gives fascinating insights into Britain’s love affair with travel.

Brits on average have visited seven countries and take two trips out of the country every year. The nation’s favourite places to visit are Spain, France and Italy, topping the list. 63% of people revealed the biggest motivators to book a trip abroad was to experience new cultures.

This wasn’t the only draw people had to travelling as 33% of people said they were going away to tick off a bucket list location and unsurprisingly another common answer was that people were trying to escape the gloomy British weather.

Although the people of Brighton book the most trips, Liverpudlians are the country’s best travelled people, visiting an average of nine countries each. That’s four more than Bradford, which comes bottom of the league table with just four.

The countries boldest travellers are from Portsmouth, with 10% of residents taking the most long-haul holidays – to places like Brazil, Japan and Australia.

The study of 2,000 adults looked at how often people travel, how many countries they’ve visited and the number of destinations on their bucket list. It also revealed changing holiday habits, including an ever-growing reliance on mobile data with 79% of Brits admitting they struggle to travel without it – whether it’s for things like directions or posting snaps online.

Brits looking to get their travels sorted as summer approaches should keep in mind seven travel blunders that holidaymakers do that could result in them being denied entry into a country, The Mirror has previously reported.

Damage to a passport, lacking required vaccinations, taking certain medications with you and no proof of onward travel are some of the things that could cause huge issues at borders. The other crucial factors to keep in mind are whether you have run out of blank passport pages, if you have enough money and whether you have a criminal record.

‘I refused to swap plane seats with child and their mum hit me with one-word insult’

A woman has sparked a debate after refusing to give up her plane seat so a mum could sit next to her six-year-old daughter on the flight – but she claims she had a good reason for it

A woman has sparked a discussion after refusing to give up her plane seat so a mum could sit next to her six-year-old daughter during the flight. The nervous passenger explained that she had paid extra for a window seat months ahead of time to help her “stay calm” during the trip, given her anxiety about flying.

However, upon reaching her row, she was surprised to find a mother occupying her window seat, with a six year old girl seated next to her in the middle seat. She shared on Reddit: “I politely said, ‘Hey, sorry, but I think that’s my seat.’ She didn’t even look up, then she said: ‘Oh, I was hoping you wouldn’t mind switching. My seat is a few rows back, in the middle, but I really want to sit with my daughter.’

“I said, ‘I’m sorry, I understand that, but I booked this seat on purpose. I have anxiety, and I really need the window.'”

“She now got angry at me for some reason. ‘Seriously? It’s a kid. You can’t sit in a middle seat for a couple of hours so a mother can stay with her child?'”. Visibly irritated, she clarified that she had paid extra for the window seat due to her travel anxiety.

She continued: “Then she stood up and snapped, ‘Unbelievable. Selfish people like you ruin everything. I hope you feel good about making a little girl cry.’

“Her daughter wasn’t even crying – just quietly colouring. I said, ‘I’m not responsible for your poor planning. If it was that important, you should’ve arranged seats together before the flight.'”.

At this point, a flight attendant intervened to investigate the commotion, and the mother attempted to portray her as the villain for refusing to swap seats.

She recalled: “The woman tried to make me sound like a monster, but I calmly explained I had this seat booked and wasn’t giving it up. The attendant checked my ticket and asked the woman to move.”

The mother begrudgingly complied, but not before spitting out a one-word insult. She accused the passenger of being “soulless” for not moving.

This jibe clearly struck a nerve – as the travel fan took to Reddit to ask if they were in the wrong for staying in their seat. Thankfully for them, people reassured that they’d done nothing wrong.

One user responded: “I flew last week and we had several families make a request to move seats so they could sit together.

“However, they did this through the stewardess, who then asked via intercom for volunteers. That’s the right way to request it, not be a one-off a***hole like this woman was.”

Another user chimed in: “I don’t confront someone in my seat. I take it to the flight attendant and let them confront that person. I have nothing to say to person who wants my seat. It is mine. I bought it. My ticket says as much.

“I just look at them with a blank stare and let the flight attendant handle it. I can swear at them and call them names but why?

“I remain non aggressive and let the flight attendant be the bad guy. I am an aisle person. I don’t like to be trapped in the middle or at a window. I can feel kind of car sick in those seats.”

Brits could be refused entry into countries for mistake that is easy to make

Tourists can be refused entry to a country for many reasons that you may forget to think about before leaving home – including having no proof of onward travel

Holidaymakers have been warned to avoid seven simple blunders that could result in being denied entry into a country. The rules for entering a country vary, so it’s crucial for travellers to familiarise themselves with the regulations of their chosen destination.

Tourists can be turned away at the border for a variety of reasons that might slip your mind before you set off, such as not having proof of onward travel or insufficient blank passport pages. While being barred from a country might seem like something that only happens under extreme circumstances, it actually occurs quite frequently and often for less serious reasons than you might anticipate.

READ MORE: ‘I tried Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 to see if it could end the daily cat litter nightmare for good’

Travel experts at StressFreeCarRental.com have compiled a list of seven reasons why tourists might be refused entry to a country and potentially detained.

Damage to passport

Even minor damage like a small tear or water stain can lead officials to detain you for questioning and deem your passport invalid. If your personal details are hard to read or any of the pages are stained by things like ink or makeup, your passport can be considered invalid.

Taking medicine abroad

Before jetting off to your dream destination, it’s crucial to check the rules around medication. Some over-the-counter drugs in the UK might be regulated or even banned elsewhere.

If you’re carrying medical equipment like syringes, make sure they’re in their original, labelled packaging. It’s also a good idea to carry copies of any prescriptions, just in case officials need to see them.

Lack of vaccinations

You could be denied entry to certain countries if you haven’t had the necessary jabs to protect against infections and diseases. Some places even demand proof of vaccination.

The risks are higher if you’re backpacking, visiting rural areas or bunking down in hostels. So, chat with your GP or a travel clinic at least eight weeks before you fly to find out what vaccinations you’ll need.

No proof of onward travel

Some countries and airlines insist on seeing proof of onward travel – whether that’s a return ticket or a ticket to another destination. This is to ensure you won’t overstay your welcome.

If you’re a spontaneous traveller, consider booking a refundable flight 24 hours before you set off, or seek advice from a travel agent.

Running out of blank passport pages

Each country has its own rules regarding the number of blank passport pages required for travel. While most countries require one or two pages, some may demand up to three.

If you’re short on blank pages, you’ll need to renew your passport before jetting off.

Insufficient funds

In certain situations, you might be asked to provide evidence that you have enough money to cover your stay in your chosen destination. The amount needed varies from country to country.

If you’re planning to stay with a friend or relative, it’s recommended to have a written agreement to show to officials.

Criminal record

Having a criminal record can bar you from entering some countries, although the criteria differ. It’s wise to check any restrictions in your chosen destination before making your travel plans.

Brits travelling to Japan issued warning about five tourism rule changes

If you’re planning a trip to Japan this summer, you might want to take note of some new rules that are reportedly set to be enforced on foreign tourists heading to the Asian island

Before you set off to Japan this summer, make sure you’re up to speed with the latest rule changes that are set to impact tourists. Japan is fast becoming a favourite among holidaymakers worldwide, and over 437,000 UK visitors flocked there in 2024 alone – the highest number in the last decade.

While the number of Brits heading to Japan last year may seem small compared to the whopping 17.8 million who jet off to our favourite holiday destination, Spain, those seeking an authentic adventure and complete cultural immersion are placing the Asian island at the top of their must-visit lists.

Japan’s tourism industry has been on the rise, and according to the Conde Nast Readers’ Choice Awards, it is the best country to visit worldwide. With the current weak state of the Japanese yen, where £1 will get you 188 yen, Japan has become an enticing destination for even budget-conscious travellers, leading to a significant spike in visits.

However, the tourism surge has placed strain on Japanese businesses and attractions, which are seeing rises in overcrowding, littering, and inappropriate behaviour. To combat this, Japan is set to introduce several new regulations that could impact all tourists entering the nation, possibly making your trip pricier.

Content cannot be displayed without consent

A Japanese local, known as Meowko, posted details about these imminent rule adjustments on TikTok, including plans for a “tourism tax” applicable to anyone not residing in Japan.

She said: “The price will be increased only for tourists, which means you have to pay more than locals in Japan. Anywhere you go, anything you buy, literally everything will be more expensive for tourists.”

This price change was confirmed in a CBC report, which stated Japan is set to introduce a dual pricing system that will see tourists paying more across the board, from eateries to amusement parks.

Come July, those wishing to scale Mount Fuji will be charged 4,000 yen (£21) for a climbing permit, twice the figure from last year. In addition, the newly opened nature-themed attraction Junglia Okinawa is asking tourists to fork out 8,000 yen (£42) for a single-day pass, while residents pay just 6,300 yen (£33).

But the hike in prices isn’t the only shift on the horizon for visitors. Meowko has also revealed that “tax-free” shopping is over in Japan. Tourists will need to pay the full price upfront and seek a tax rebate at the airport when departing.

Meowko further suggested that currency exchange could become trickier, although details on how this will be implemented remain vague. She explained: “That’s the only thing I have heard from the government. I don’t know how they are going to make it more difficult, but more information is coming soon.”

Additionally, she claimed that certain spots might begin denying access to tourists and mentioned that Japan is considering the introduction of a tourist visa.

At present, Brits can visit Japan for up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes without needing to apply for a visa in advance, as one is granted upon arrival. However, changes to this policy could require you to apply for a tourist visa before your trip, potentially adding an extra expense to your holiday.

Travel advice for Japan

As per Gov.uk, there are several travel regulations you should be aware of prior to travelling to Japan. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay, but no additional period of validity beyond this is necessary. You’ll also need a blank page in your passport for your visa stamp.

Currently, there’s no need to apply for a visa before entering the country, as you can obtain one upon arrival. If you require a multiple-entry visa or need to stay for more than 90 days, you should consult with immigration officials.

It is prohibited to bring meat products into Japan, including sausages, bacon, and ham, without permission from the Japanese Animal Quarantine Service. While whale meat can be purchased in Japan, importing it into the UK or the EU is illegal and can result in a fine of up to £5,000 and a prison sentence.

Unqualified ex-cop jailed over deaths of four people killed while paddleboarding in ‘extremely hazardous conditions’

A FORMER cop has been jailed after four people she led on a swollen river were killed in a paddleboarding tragedy.

Paul O’Dwyer, 42, Andrea Powell, 41, Morgan Rogers, 24, and Nicola Wheatley, 40, died after they got into difficulty on the River Cleddau, in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.

Nerys Lloyd, who owns Salty Dog – the company operating the tour – pleaded guilty to four counts of gross negligence manslaughter.

The 39-year-old has now been jailed for ten years and six months after also admitting a Health and Safety at Work Act offence.

The horror unfolded when the group of nine set out on the paddleboarding tour on October 30, 2021.

Lloyd, who now works as an operations manager for a charity, had let the tour go ahead despite “severe weather warnings”.

After the four paddleboarders were killed, she was heard saying: “I’, going to jail for this”.

Swansea Crown Court heard she was “not remotely qualified” to run the tour and that several of the group had very limited experience.

She advertised the trip on Facebook for £149 per person to include overnight accommodation and two “fully” qualified instructors.

But she had only gained a “basic entry-level qualification” after attending two courses over two days with fellow instructor and neighbour Paul O’Dwyer.

Prosecutor Mark Lloyd KC said there was an “obvious potential for real danger”.

There had been heavy rain and “the river was in flood conditions” with a “visibly strong current”.

Mr Watson KC said none of the victims was aware of the weir or how to navigate it.

Because of the heavy rain, around “two tonnes of water” were crossing a one-metre section of the weir every second.

The group got caught in heavy downpours just after 9am as emergency crews were raced to the scene.

The inexperienced paddleboarders were all “attached to their boards by way of a traditional ankle leash”.

Former soldier Paul was killed as he jumped into the water in a bid to save the women.

Mum Andrea, who worked as a dental therapist, was rushed to hospital with critical injuries but tragically couldn’t be saved.

Four other people on the paddleboarding trip survived the horror.

In a series of victim impact statements, grieving family members blasted Lloyd for her “lack of remorse” following the deaths.

Andrea’s husband Mark broke down as he told how she was “happy and content” on the day of the trip.

He next saw the mum when she was in hospital in a coma with cuts and bruising to her face and body.

Mark also told how Andrea had the “most amazing bond” with their son Finn, who was seven at the time of the tragedy.

He said the sound his son made when he discovered his mum had died will haunt him forever.

The dad told how his son later said: “I want to die so I can be with my mummy.”

Mark added: “The failings of Nerys Lloyd are on a monumental scale. How can a serving police officer allow this to happen?”

Morgan’s mum Theresa Hall told the court her daughter’s loss follows her like a shadow and slammed Lloyd for “guiding [her] to her death”.

Addressing the ex-cop, she added: “You in your arrogance have stopped me being able to fully grieve for my daughter.

“Every day of my life is absolutely horrendous” knowing she died a “horrific death”.

Nicola’s husband Darren Wheatley branded Lloyd “a disgraced business owner” and “vile person”.

He added: “You have hidden behind your carefully orchestrated smoke screen.

“I hugged and kissed Nicola goodbye, she was so trusting.

“The next time I would see her would be to identify her body in the mortuary.

“I couldn’t imagine what she had gone through.

“This was not the Nicola that left our house less than 24 hours earlier but it is the face I see every day when I open my eyes.”

Kerry O’Dwyer, wife of Paul O’Dwyer, was saved during the paddleboard tour when she was pushed to safety by Andrea.

She said her husband made a “devastating mistake” that day but he “died trying to save others” when he dived back in to the water.

Kerry added: “Grief is in our household every single day. You carried on as if nothing ever happened.

“Nerys, I do not believe you will ever learn from this, you’ve had three years to show remorse and yet you have continued like this is an inconvenience to your life.”

Charming village with ‘best pub roast’ is one of UK’s ‘poshest locations’

The picturesque village of Shackleford in Surrey has been named one of the UK’s poshest villages, and with its stunning surroundings and cosy pubs, it’s not hard to see why

A quaint UK village has been identified as one of the nation’s posh hotspots – with its roast dinner being hailed as one of the best in the country. Situated on the outskirts of Guildford and a short distance from Godalming, Shackleford in Surrey was the setting for romantic Christmas hit The Holiday.

The village was ranked among the UK’s poshest villages by the Telegraph in 2024. With top schools, stunning homes and an abundance of pubs and eateries, it’s no wonder the village is held in such high regard. The idyllic location is a magnet for hikers and ramblers, thanks to the surrounding scenic countryside, and the local pubs offer the perfect respite for those exploring the area.

One of the village’s endearing pubs is frequently lauded for serving up some of the finest roast dinners around.

The esteemed Cyder House Inn in Shackleford is rated second out of over 40 pubs in Godalming on Tripadvisor, boasting a 4.5-star rating from nearly 400 reviews and bagging a 2023 Traveller’s Choice Award.

Patrons have left glowing reviews, with one visitor extolling the “excellent Sunday lunch” as the “best pub roast” while another commended the “Great food and friendly staff. Dog-friendly too.”

Additional comments highlighted the pub’s “cosy” atmosphere and applauded its “the best” vegan offerings. Over the past year, the average price for a home in Shackleford was nearly £632,000, with detached homes typically going for around £835,000.

Only one sale exceeded the £1 million mark, according to Rightmove data, while terraced houses averaged at £225,000. However, The Telegraph reports the average house price in the area as £1.36m.

Rightmove, which bases its figures on Land Registry data, reveals that overall sold prices in Shackleford experienced an 80 per cent decrease over the last year compared to the previous year, and a 70 per cent drop from the 2017 peak of £2.13m.

Although Shackleford doesn’t have its own train station, residents are just a 10-minute drive away from Guildford and Farncombe Stations, providing direct links to London.

If you’re planning a visit to Shackleford, get ready for a laid-back day in a stunning part of the world. It’s not a village brimming with tourist attractions beyond the pub or bustling with activity, but that’s part of its allure.

Life here is slow-paced and tranquil, which is precisely why the villagers adore it so much.

If you’re yearning for a picturesque UK getaway and have already explored the charming avenues of Shackleford, then consider venturing to Kynance Cove on the Lizard Peninsula. Though it spans just 200 metres, this cove compensates with its breathtaking environment.

EnjoyTravel has likened it to “like a slice of Sardinia” because of its vivid blue waters. This beach has captivated lovers of the coast for centuries and has even been crowned the best beach in the UK.

Airline passengers warned they could be ‘booted off flight’ due to tarmac rule

A TikTok video has gone viral showing how Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet and TUI passengers could be kicked off a flight for breaching a little-known rule about taking photos on the tarmac

Passengers jetting off with popular budget carriers might be in for a shock if they flout a not-so-obvious rule. People travelling with Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet and TUI – as well as other airlines – could be kicked off their flights due to an obscure regulation about taking pics on the tarmac.

A traveller’s TikTok video went viral, alerting flyers of these airlines to the rule after he was booted from a flight for what seemed like a harmless blunder. Jimmy Mitchell got the boot from a Jetstar flight from Sydney to Brisbane and took to social media to share his ordeal while stuck at the airport terminal.

READ MORE: ‘I tried Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 to see if it could end the daily cat litter nightmare for good’

The father whipped out his mobile to take a quick snap of his wife, Pauline, and their kids as they hopped aboard the aircraft. Unbeknownst to him, there had been a warning against using phones on the tarmac during refuelling.

After being escorted off the plane, Mr Mitchell vented his anger: “This is the worst experience I’ve ever had flying. I try and get on the plane, I take a photo of my kids as they get on the plane, in flight mode, and the lady calls me an idiot.

“I turned around in disbelief because I was half way up the stairs at this point. I basically stormed over to her and I was like, ‘Are you serious? What did you just call me?’ She was basically saying ‘you can’t take photos on the tarmac, you can’t take photos on the tarmac’.”

Jimmy suggested that the situation could have been handled more effectively if he had simply been asked to put his phone away. Typically, airport security zones and tarmacs are areas where passengers are instructed to stow their phones.

While there’s no law against taking photos in public spaces, UK airports are private entities and thus reserve the right to prohibit photography – a rule most enforce, especially in secure areas.

When not in a secure zone, and when the photos are for personal rather than commercial use, it’s generally acceptable. Areas before Customs Arrivals usually impose restrictions on electronic devices and photography.

Airlines and airport staff often exercise their discretion to determine when to permit photography and when to request passengers to cease.

Jetstar clarified that phone usage is prohibited on the tarmac “as this is an operational space and we remind customers of this via gate PAs”.

A representative for the airline stated: “All our customers and team members have the right to feel respected when flying with us or when at work and we’re looking into what took place in this instance.”

For instance, Hotels.com offers hotel stays from £97, while Booking.com provides a variety of accommodation starting at £88 per night. If you prefer self-catering, Vrbo is an excellent source for quaint cottages in the area.

A trail featuring seven consecutive waterfalls is bound to attract visitors, so the team at Derbyshire Live decided to test the walk to see if it lives up to its reputation.

They began the loop near Arnfield Reservoir in Tintwistle, but cautioned that parking can be difficult during peak seasons. The walk then led them up Crossgate Lane, past a farm where you might be fortunate enough to spot a peacock.

From there, you turn left onto Arnfield Lane until you reach Gamekeeper Cottage. Here, you’ll find a gate and a footpath that stretches for about 1.3km – just be aware it gradually inclines.

You’ll know you’re on the right path when you pass through a gate between two large woodland areas. Continue along the path until you spot a man-made pile of stones, which signals a left turn down a narrow footpath.

If you overlook the pile of stones, keep an eye out for the first left-hand turn into a footpath after walking through the gate between the woods.

After a few minutes on this path, you’ll begin to see and hear the seven waterfalls, ranging from small cascades to thunderous falls.

There are ample opportunities for photos and serene spots to sit back and enjoy a sandwich. After soaking in the beauty of these waterfalls, you can either backtrack or plan another route to explore more of the Peak District.

After all, there’s loads to see and do across the entire park with its rolling green hills, quintessentially British villages boasting cosy pubs and hotels, and walking trails that cater to all abilities.

For those planning a family getaway, there’s endless fun to be had with the kids, not to mention exciting attractions such as Poole’s Cavern with its limestone caverns and woodland walks, while the cable cars at Heights of Abraham offer a fun, unique way to take in the views.

Robert Jenrick vows to ‘bring this coalition together’ to end Tory-Reform fight after polls put Farage’s party ahead

ROBERT Jenrick has been caught plotting to unite the Tories and Reform UK in a leaked tape.

The top Tory warned that a divided Right would gift Labour a second term, vowing he’s “not prepared” to let Keir Starmer “sail in through the middle.”

a man in a suit and tie is giving a speech in front of a sign that says edu

The comments have fuelled fresh speculation that Mr Jenrick – who narrowly lost the leadership contest to Kemi Badenoch – could be positioning himself for another tilt at the top job.

It comes despite public denials from both Ms Badenoch and Reform boss Nigel Farage that any deal is on the table before the election.

In audio obtained by Sky News of a speech at the University College London Conservative Association dinner last month, Mr Jenrick said: “[Reform UK] continues to do well in the polls. And my worry is that they become a kind of permanent or semi-permanent fixture on the British political scene.

“If that is the case – and I say, I am trying to do everything I can to stop that being the case – then life becomes a lot harder for us, because the Right is not united.

“And then you head towards the general election, where the nightmare scenario is that Keir Starmer sails in through the middle as a result of the two parties being disunited.

“I don’t know about you, but I’m not prepared for that to happen. I want the fight to be united.

“And so, one way or another, I’m determined to do that and to bring this coalition together and make sure we unite as a nation as well.”

A source close to Mr Jenrick said his comments were about “voters not parties”, adding: “He’s clear we have to put Reform out of business and make the Conservatives the natural home for all those on the Right, rebuilding the coalition of voters we had in 2019 and can have again.

“But he’s under no illusions how difficult that is – we have to prove over time we’ve changed and can be trusted again.”

Reform has consistently outpolled the Conservatives this year and claims to have overtaken them in membership numbers.

The insurgent party is also tipped to pick up hundreds of council seats across England in next week’s local elections – which is set to pile on huge pressure on struggling Ms Badenoch.

Earlier this month, Ms Badenoch suggested Tory and Reform councillors could work together to stop Labour at a local level but Mr Farage promptly rejected it.

Senior Tory backbenchers, including Esther McVey and Suella Braverman, have insisted that a deal must be reached with Reform to unite the Right and beat Sir Keir.

Labour Party chairman Ellie Reeves said: “Kemi Badenoch needs to urgently come clean as to whether she backs her shadow justice secretary in doing grubby deals with Reform behind the electorate’s back or if she will rule it out.

“If she disagrees with Robert Jenrick, how can her leadership have any credibility whilst he remains in her shadow cabinet?

“We know Kemi Badenoch has opened the door to deals with Reform at a local level, which Labour has categorically ruled out, and now Robert Jenrick has let the cat out the bag.”

The Lib Dems also called on Ms Badenoch to sack Mr Jenrick.

Deputy Party leader Daisy Cooper said: “The cat is out of the bag. Senior Conservatives are plotting a grubby election deal with Nigel Farage.

“Kemi Badenoch should sack Robert Jenrick now if she’s serious about ruling out a pact with Reform. Anything less would show she’s either too weak to sack him or that she agrees.

“It’s little wonder that former Conservative voters, appalled by the party lurching further to the right, are switching to the Liberal Democrats in their droves.”

TfL fury as commuter pays £20.80 for £5 journey and suddenly realises why

TfL fury as many Londoners find that they are being charged the maximum amount despite tapping in and out when commuting during the week, but have finally figured out the reason why

It's important to exercise our brains, and a fun London Underground brainteaser could do the trick (file)
Londoners are outraged by being charged the maximum fare despite tapping in and out(Image: LightRocket via Getty Images)

Londoners are outraged after discovering their weekday commutes on the London Underground are more expensive than expected because of one major mistake. One commuter shared their frustration on Reddit, revealing that they had struggled to understand how TfL calculates fares after being charged over £20 for a journey.

Their post read: “I start my journey at North Acton (Central line) and end the journey at Victoria (Circle line). According to Google, this should cost around £5. My bank statement shows TfL is charging £10.40 each way (£20.80 per day). I can’t work out what is happening.”

It turned out the issue stemmed from using two different payment methods. Although the same physical card was linked to both a phone and a smartwatch, each device has a unique identifier, and TfL treats them as separate payment methods.

London, Waterloo train station, Bakerloo Line subway platform
Londoners are being charged the maximum fare despite tapping in and out(Image: Getty)

This means that even if your physical card is connected to Apple Pay, you’ll see several incomplete journeys if you don’t tap in and tap out using the same method. TfL charges the maximum fare for incomplete journeys.

Despite many Londoners requesting refunds without knowing the cause, one Reddit user explained: “They [TfL] can refuse to refund if the errors were within your control, but if you don’t have a history of refunds, they should be able to use discretion to refund you this time.”

Another wrote: “Make sure you contact TfL with full details of all your journeys and methods used. I put everything into a big spreadsheet, explained that I didn’t realise they treated each device as a separate card, they told me off and then refunded the difference that I’d calculated.”

TfL has published a notice on their website advising commuters to use the same device: “Whether you use contactless or Oyster, be sure to use the same card or device to touch in and out. For example, don’t touch in with your iPhone and touch out with your Apple Watch, contactless card or Oyster card.

“Where you touch in and out tells us where you’ve travelled from and to, so we can charge you the right fare for your journey,” the website explains.

Between zones one to nine, the maximum fare is £10.40 during peak hours and £7.00 during off-peak times. Peak hours are Monday to Friday, between 6:30am–9:30am and 4:00pm–7:00pm.

These charges are also dependent on the age as adults are charged the maximum, yet those under 16s are charged less than £6. This is because children are valid to have a zip oyster card between the ages of 11 -15 where some transport is free such as the bus, and others are discounted.

Off-peak hours are all other times. However, if you travel from a station outside Zone one into Zone one between 4:00pm and 7:00pm on weekdays, it is still considered peak time.

Zone one covers Central London. Zone two surrounds Zone one, and the distance between zones increases as you move outward. Zones seven, eight, and nine, cover small areas just outside North West London, including Watford, Croxley Green, Rickmansworth, Amersham, and Chalfont & Latimer.

Thousands of families can get up to £200 free cash towards school uniforms – are you one of them?

THOUSANDS of families can get up to £200 free cash towards school uniforms ahead of the new academic year.

The help comes via a Government-backed scheme designed to help hard-up households struggling for cash.

The cost of kitting out your kids for a new school term can rack up fast but you might be able to get help via the Household Support Fund (HSF).

Grants to help with school uniform costs are offered by several councils across England, with up to £200 free cash available.

You’ll have to get in touch with your local council to apply.

Most councils have web pages dedicated to the HSF, or you can always call your local authority by finding the contact details on its website.

To find what council area you fall under, visit www.gov.uk/find-local-council.

Who is eligible and how much could I get?

Councils set their own eligibility criteria for whatever they have been portioned from the HSF.

That means whether you qualify for help is dependent on where you live and it can be a postcode lottery.

However, help is usually offered to those on a low income, benefits or classed as vulnerable.

So, if you are on something like Universal Credit, Income Support or Tax Credits, you will likely be in line for support.

Check with your local council what its eligibility criteria is.

The amount you are eligible for can vary dramatically in the latest round, with grants worth hundreds of pounds up for grabs.

For example, Medway Council, in South East England, is distributing school uniform vouchers to hard-up households worth £100.

You receive £100 for every dependent school age child, per household per year, unless in exceptional circumstances.

So, if you have two dependent children you can get £200.

You can apply for help via www.medway.gov.uk.

In Milton Keynes, the city council is offering help to households struggling to meet the cost of essential items including school uniforms.

How much you can get depends on your specific circumstances.

Officers working for the council will determine how much you can get during an assessment.

You can find out more details via www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/benefits/household-support-fund.

Wakefield Council is distributing a range of support to residents in need through its latest round of HSF.

This includes supermarket vouchers which can be used to get money off school uniforms.

Meanwhile, Southwark Council, in London, is dishing out grants to parents with children aged 11 moving from primary to secondary school.

The grant is a £45 voucher which can be redeemed in shops.

To be eligible for the vouchers, you have to be receiving any one of a number of benefits including Universal Credit or Income Support.

For more details and how to apply visit www.southwark.gov.uk/schools-and-education/financial-support-school-age-children/school-uniform-grants.

Hounslow Council, also in London, is offering payments to eligible households worth up to £60.

Payments of £60 are made to secondary school pupils while grants of £15 per child are made to children in primary education.

What about outside England?

All local authorities in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales offer school uniform grants, unlike in England.

In Wales, all parents meeting eligibility criteria can apply for grants of £125, or £200 for those whose children are moving from primary to secondary school, via their local councils.

You can find out more via the Welsh Government’s website. Applications for this year’s grants end on May 31.

In Scotland, councils distribute grants of at least £120 per child for primary school pupils and £150 per child for secondary school pupils to eligible parents.

You can find out more via mygov.scot/clothing-grants.

In Northern Ireland, parents of primary school pupils could be eligible for £42.90, with £87.60 available for secondary pupils under the age of 15 on August 1, 2024, and £93.60 for pupils over 15 years of age on August 1 2024. Details can be found on the government’s website.

Payments made to parents by councils in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not made from HSF funding.

Household Support Fund explained

Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains what you need to know about the Household Support Fund.

If you’re battling to afford energy and water bills, food or other essential items and services, the Household Support Fund can act as a vital lifeline.

The financial support is a little-known way for struggling families to get extra help with the cost of living.

Every council in England has been given a share of £421million cash by the government to distribute to local low income households.

Each local authority chooses how to pass on the support. Some offer vouchers whereas others give direct cash payments.

In many instances, the value of support is worth hundreds of pounds to individual families.

Just as the support varies between councils, so does the criteria for qualifying.

Many councils offer the help to households on selected benefits or they may base help on the level of household income.

The key is to get in touch with your local authority to see exactly what support is on offer.

The current round runs until the end of March 2025, but has been extended.

The next round will run between April 2025 and March 2026.

There’s nothing quite like a beach day, even here in Britain, where sunshine isn’t always guaranteed. But if you’re craving that clear blue water and soft sand feel, one Scottish beach is drawing comparisons to the world’s most luxurious coastlines.

Luskentyre Beach, on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, has become a must-visit for lovers of natural beauty. It’s the largest beach on the island and regularly makes ‘best of’ lists thanks to its peaceful charm and breathtaking views.

It was recently crowned the UK’s number one beach in TripAdvisor’s 2024 Travellers’ Choice Awards. With a near-perfect 4.9-star rating from over 1,100 reviews, it’s clear that this spot has left a serious impression on visitors.

One traveller wrote: “Words do not do this beach justice! If it was 80 degrees and sunny, I’d swear I was in the Maldives.” Another said: “Luskentyre Bay is a little slice of heaven on the coast of the Isle of Harris, honestly worth every mile of the journey.” These aren’t one-off reviews; praise for Luskentyre is as consistent as the tides.

Even on wild weather days, the magic remains. One reviewer shared: “There were gale-force winds and pouring rain when we visited, and it was still the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen.”

Part of Luskentyre’s appeal is how untouched and vast it feels. The sweeping sands stretch for miles, backed by rolling dunes and surrounded by crystal-clear waters that shift colour with the light.

On sunny days, the beach glows in soft blues and greens, drawing even more comparisons to tropical escapes. When the tide is out, the bay reveals endless tidal flats and mirror-like reflections.

According to Hidden Scotland, late spring and summer are the best times to visit, thanks to long daylight hours and stunning sunsets. They recommend staying for a few days to soak in the calm and explore the wider island.

Nearby, the Seallam Visitor Centre offers insight into the local history and Hebridean culture. And if you fancy a bite to eat, the Waterside Cafe serves fresh baking and hearty meals using locally sourced ingredients.

Travellers often describe their visit to Luskentyre as transformative, a place where time slows and nature does the talking. Whether you’re looking to disconnect or just walk barefoot along the sand, it delivers.

It may be remote, and the weather might be unpredictable, but Luskentyre Beach is living proof that you don’t need to board a plane to find paradise. Sometimes, the best places are just at the edge of the map.

So, if you’re planning your next UK getaway, this picture-perfect spot could be just what you need. Scotland’s best-kept beach secret might not stay secret for long.

Man Utd ‘to work on £92.5million double transfer swoop for Cunha and Delap NOW to conclude deal in first summer window’

MANCHESTER UNITED are eager to finalise deals to sign Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap, according to reports.

Ruben Amorim wants to revamp his attacking options this summer and the two forwards have been earmarked as key targets.

Delap is United’s No1 transfer target ahead of the summer window, and will be available for just £30million once Ipswich are relegated.

The Red Devils intend to trigger his release clause as soon as they are able to, according to the Daily Mail, and will do the same with Cunha’s £62.5million buyout fee.

United are said to have fought off interest from Newcastle to land Cunha, 25, who was spoken to by Amorim in the Old Trafford tunnel last Sunday.

Delap, 22, does have other suitors too however, most notably Chelsea.

And although his buyout clause is £30m, add-ons are expected the make the deal a lot pricier.

That means a large chunk on the budget could be spent on the pair, with Amorim understood to be planning on deploying them both in his starting line-up, with Cunha as a No10 alongside Bruno Fernandes.

Victor Osimhen also remains an option but would cost upwards of £70m.

United could reportedly let Rasmus Hojlund leave to Napoli as part of the deal, while Napoli are also interested in Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentine winger could leave this summer and his transfer fee would secure pure profit for the Red Devils since he is an academy graduate.

Chelsea hold an interest in Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo – another academy player who would guarantee pure profit.

Ruben Amorim will go all out to secure Europa League glory for Man Utd

United could be open to letting the midfielder leave along with Casemiro.

And finding suitors to sign Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony on a permanent basis is also on the priority list this summer.

Girl, 13, dies just days after brother, 7, killed by ‘poisoned Easter eggs’ that ‘jealous lover sent to ex’s new family’

A 13-YEAR-old girl has died just days after her seven-year-old brother – after the pair both ate chocolate Easter eggs suspected to have been poisoned.

Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, 35, was arrested in Brazil on suspicion of murder after officials claimed she spiked the chocolate in an act motivated by “revenge and jealousy”.

The eggs were delivered last Wednesday to her ex-boyfriend’s new partner, Mirian Lira, who shared them out with her kids.

Mirian’s son, Luis Fernando Rocha Silva reportedly fell ill immediately after eating the chocolate – prompting his mum to rush them to the Imperatriz City Hospital.

Tragically, the boy could not be saved and died in the early hours last Thursday.

Mirian, 32, and her thirteen-year-old daughter Evelyn also became sick and were rushed to hospital.

Evelyn died on Monday at Brazil’s Imperatriz Municipal Hospital, CNN Brasil reports.

The facility said Evlyn’s death was caused by a vascular shock linked to organ failure.

“Unfortunately, the clinical condition showed serious and rapid deterioration without responding to treatment,” Imperatriz Municipal Hospital said in a statement.

A motorbike courier reportedly turned up with the tainted treats along with a note reading: “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.”

And Evlyn’s mum Mirian reportedly received an anonymous call after the delivery asking if the package had arrived.

Samples of the chocolate have been sent off for forensic analysis to confirm whether it is toxic.

Cops arrested Jordélia as she took a bus to her home town Santa Ines after staying in a hotel 200 miles away in Imperatiz, where the victims’ family lives.

Police reportedly found receipts and spoke to Jordélia’s ex-partner, which led them to believe she could be involved.

Cops also shared CCTV footage they said showed Jordélia buying Easter eggs while disguised in a black wig and dark sunglasses.

She can be seen holding the box of luxury eggs in the footage and rummaging through her bag to find a card.

Jordélia reportedly confessed to buying the chocolate in a statement at the Santa Inês Regional Police Station, but denied loading it with poison.

According to the Court of Justice of Maranhão, the case must be forwarded to the Criminal Court of Imperatriz, where the events took place.

But after a long cold winter your lawn may be in need of a little love.

Look no further than Lidl‘s Parkside Electric Lawnmower – hitting the middle aisle for just £49.99.

The savvy lawnmower is a budget friendly alternative to the Bosch EasyRotak 32-225, which sells for a whopping £113.

While Bosch’s version is well-known for its durability and reliability, Lidl’s Parkside model certainly gives it a run for its money.

Both models boast a 1,200W motor, meaning they pack just as much punch when it comes to tackling thatch and moss build-up.

The Lidl lawnmower has an impressive cutting width of 12 inches, helping you cover as much ground as possible.

The mower has three cutting heights – 20, 40 and 60mm – so you can choose exactly how you want your lawn to look.

It’s also easy to use with its smooth-rolling wheels with grass friendly tread, height adjustable bar with soft grip and easily removable 30L grass collection box.

And what’s more – it offers a three-year warranty, which is one year more than Bosch’s standard offer.

The Parkside Electric Lawnmower will be available in store from April 24.

I tried ‘magic’ Lidl garden hose – you need to get it, it’s perfect for summer

And Lidl’s mower isn’t just cheaper than Bosch – it undercuts other big brands too.

The Einhell Electric Scarifier and Aerator GC-SA 1231/1 is priced at £99.95 on Tooled Up, while the VonHaus 2-in-1 Lawn Scarifier & Aerator retails online for £114.99.

But the mower isn’t the only summer essential you’ll find in Lidl’s middle aisle.

Shoppers can also get their hands on a fire pit that’s perfect for the garden – and it’s 60 per cent cheaper than rival versions.

The Tepro Fire Pit, on sale for just £19.99, is billed as the perfect way to “create a cosy atmosphere in your garden”.

The steel pit has a modern, square design – and heat-resistant coating for optimal safety.

It also comes with a poker to keep those embers burning for as long as possible.

Meanwhile, Argos is selling a similar product, the Argos Home Foldable Firepit.

While this is a more expensive option – coming in at £50 – it does come with some added features.

These include a handy a mesh safety lid and a grill that transforms the fire pit into a BBQ that’s perfect for hosting.

You can find your local Lidl store using the store locator on Lidl’s website.

But remember – it’s always important to compare different options on the market, to make sure you’re getting the best value for money.

How to bag a bargain

SUN Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to find a cut-price item and bag a bargain…

Sign up to loyalty schemes of the brands that you regularly shop with.

Big names regularly offer discounts or special lower prices for members, among other perks.

Sales are when you can pick up a real steal.

Retailers usually have periodic promotions that tie into payday at the end of the month or Bank Holiday weekends, so keep a lookout and shop when these deals are on.

Sign up to mailing lists and you’ll also be first to know of special offers. It can be worth following retailers on social media too.

When buying online, always do a search for money off codes or vouchers that you can use vouchercodes.co.uk and myvouchercodes.co.uk are just two sites that round up promotions by retailer.

Scanner apps are useful to have on your phone. Trolley.co.uk app has a scanner that you can use to compare prices on branded items when out shopping.

Bargain hunters can also use B&M’s scanner in the app to find discounts in-store before staff have marked them out.

And always check if you can get cashback before paying which in effect means you’ll get some of your money back or a discount on the item.

Tickets go on sale for Cinespia’s summer movies at Hollywood Forever

The 24th summer of movies under the stars at Hollywood Forever Cemetery will begin Memorial Day weekend when Cinespia screens “The Big Lebowski” on May 24.

The next night comes a 30th anniversary presentation of “Clueless,” followed by a May 31 screening of “Blue Velvet” and tribute to director David Lynch, who died in January.

Cinespia, which is teaming with Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video to present the summer series, is selling tickets now for those three shows. The organization hasn’t released the rest of the schedule yet, but typically screens about 30 movies per year at Hollywood Forever and other venues including the Greek Theatre and Los Angeles Historic Park, ending around Halloween.

At Hollywood Forever, the final resting place of Hollywood and music stars such as Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney and Johnny Ramone, films are projected onto a mausoleum wall and moviegoers sit and sprawl on the cemetery’s Fairbanks Lawn (an open area with no graves). Movie nights usually feature DJs before and after the show, along with free photo booths featuring scenes inspired by films.

The Cinespia shows at Hollywood Forever typically cost $29.99 per adult and attract up to 4,000 guests, who are allowed to bring their own blankets, food, and drinks (including beer and wine). The setup includes concession stands and a beer and wine bar. Parking fees on those nights run $24 to $36.

The Cinespia organization was born in 2002, when its first cemetery screening was Alfred Hitchcock’s 1951 thriller “Strangers on a Train.”

“The Big Lebowski” (1998), which starred Jeff Bridges, was directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen. “Clueless” (1995), a teen comedy, starred Alicia Silverstone and was directed by Amy Heckerling. “Blue Velvet” (1986) was written and directed by Lynch. It starred Kyle MacLachan, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper and Laura Dern.

Heartbreaking tributes to ‘kindest & most genuine’ British Airways crew member found dead in hotel bed on US stop over – The Sun

HEARTFELT tributes have poured in for a British Airways crew member who was found dead in his hotel bed on a stopover between flights.

Irfan Ali Mirza’s colleagues raised the alarm when the 45-year-old did not report for duty on a flight back to the UK from San Francisco on Thursday.

The dad-of-three checked in at the crew’s £150-a-night hotel on Tuesday after working a flight from Heathrow.

But concerns were raised and BA staff were then escorted by hotel managers to Irfan’s room following the tragic discovery.

The crew was said to be too upset to continue with the flight to Heathrow which was cancelled at the last minute, disrupting travel plans for up to 850 passengers.

Heartfelt tributes from devastated family and friends have now poured in for Irfan who may have sadly lain undiscovered for two days.

Danielle Crane posted a picture of Irfan alongside other BA crew members.

She wrote: “Just heartbreaking, one of most genuine, kindest and fun crew I’ve flown with.”

And Ranjit Benning wrote: “Irfan, rest in peace my brother. Such a sad loss.”

Mirza’s youngest brother, Rizzy, also thanked Irfan’s BA colleagues for their kind words and stories.

He said: “I cannot begin to express the sudden loss of my beautiful brother. It really has cut the family deep.

“Looking at all your lovely messages brings me some peace knowing that my brother was well loved and respected amongst you all.”

Irfan’s brother Kamran Mirza wrote: “Cannot express how hard it is that Irfan left his parents, us three siblings and his wife and three young children behind. It’s totally heartbreaking.

“It has really shocked me and the rest of the family that Irfan is not with us anymore. Cannot express what we are going through right now.

“We both were born in the same month, June, only 4 days apart. There were times we celebrated our birthday at the same time.

“Now that moment will never come again. It’s heartbreaking.”

The San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Irfan’s identity on Tuesday hours after his family identified him on social media, reports MailOnline.

Cops said the responding officers’ investigation of the scene “did not discover any evidence of foul play” and the body was taken by the medical examiner.

After Irfan was found dead, pilots returned to support their colleagues.

But flight BA284, on an Airbus A380-800, was cancelled although passengers were not told why.

They were given hotel rooms while BA staff tried to get them on other flights.

A source previously told The Sun: “The steward was a popular member of the team and this came as a bolt from the blue.

“The grim reality is that he may have been dead in his bed for some time.”

The TV presenter broke down over ‘finding herself again’

The 49-year-old has suffered strained relationships with EastEnders star Patsy Palmer and comedian Donna Preston inside the house.

She found herself involved in an unlikely feud with Patsy Palmer after Mickey Rourke‘s clash with Love Island‘s Chris Hughes.

Patsy asked Donna, who was standing with Angellica, if she was “alright” after Mickey’s sexual innuendo towards Towie’s Ella Rae Wise.

An upset Angellica said to Patsy: “You just came over and you asked her if she was okay… what about me?”

She then got on the wrong side of Donna later in the series when she was nominated for being loud in mornings – and retaliated by banging a pot with a wooden spoon to wake the housemates.

On Tuesday night, Angellica broke down in tears as she finally opened up about her feud with ITV’s money-saving guru Martin Lewis.

The TV presenter admitted feeling like she’d “found herself again” in the Celebrity Big Brother house.

Angellica said: “It’s probably the best thing I’ve done in a long time.

“Before I came in here, I was a little bit scared. The press were asking if I’d talk about the Martin Lewis show and stuff.

“It took me a long time to get over that.

“I’m so grateful to all the audience that messaged me about it and also to other celebrities who contacted me and stuff.

“It was those messages and support that got me through.

“That’s why I wanted to come on the show to tap into my old self.

“It has taken a long, long time.

“I think I’ve found myself again being here. Every cloud.”

The 49-year-old was “secretly sacked” from The Martin Lewis Money Show back in 2023.
