FIFA Club World Cup: Dortmund edge Sundowns 4-3 as Inter knock out Urawa | Football News

Inter Milan have come from behind to beat Urawa Red Diamonds and knock the Japanese side out of the Club World Cup, while Borussia Dortmund held off Mamelodi Sundowns to win a seven-goal thriller in hot conditions.

Fluminense rallied in the second half to beat Ulsan 4-2 and knock out the South Korean side, while Monterrey and River Plate played out an entertaining goalless draw as the tournament entered its second week on Saturday.

At Lumen Field in Seattle, Ryoma Watanabe got an early opening goal for Urawa Reds, who were backed by a noisy contingent of their supporters.

But captain Lautaro Martinez – who got Inter’s equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Monterrey of Mexico in their opening game – repeated the trick to level matters with a clever overhead kick 12 minutes from time.

Valentin Carboni was then the unlikely hero as he grabbed the winner two minutes into injury time.

The result left some Urawa fans in tears and Inter level on four points with River Plate with the two teams meeting next.

River Plate were let down by their finishing in a scrappy, foul-ridden encounter with Mexico’s Monterrey, who sit on two points.

Esteban Andrada, Monterrey’s Argentinian keeper, made a series of saves while River’s forwards were unable to put away the few chances that came their way.

Monterrey could still make it into the last 16 if they beat Urawa and River, or Inter win their game.

Dortmund break South African hearts in Cincinnati ‘sauna’

Earlier, Jobe Bellingham got his first goal for Dortmund as his new club overcame stifling heat in Cincinnati to beat Sundowns 4-3 and move to four points from two matches in Group F.

The South African champions had taken a surprise early lead through a fine solo goal from Lucas Ribeiro.

However, Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams handed Dortmund their equaliser on a plate, passing the ball straight to Felix Nmecha, who stroked home.

Serhou Guirassy gave Dortmund the lead with his 35th goal since the beginning of the season.

English midfielder Bellingham, who this month followed older brother Jude’s footsteps in joining the German side from Sunderland, started for the first time for Dortmund and made it 3-1 just before the break.

Khuliso Mudau’s own goal made it 4-1 before the hour mark, but Sundowns salvaged some pride by reducing the deficit through Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba.

“I’m sweating like I’ve just come out of a sauna,” said Dortmund coach Niko Kovac when asked about the conditions in a game which started at midday local time.

“It was tough going for both teams, but the opposition are used to it. We certainly didn’t give our best performance, but that wasn’t possible today.”

Sundowns will still go into their final game in Group F with a chance of qualifying for the last 16.

“The boys made a wonderful performance… it was a hell of a match. I’m not happy but very proud,” said their Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso.

South Korea’s Ulsan gave Fluminense a real scare in their Group F clash at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, leading 2-1 until the 66th minute before the Brazilians ran out 4-2 winners, eliminating the K-League champions in the process.

Colombian striker Jhon Arias put Fluminense ahead with a 27th-minute free-kick, but goals from Lee Jin-hyun and Um Won-sang gave Ulsan the advantage at the break.

Nonata levelled for the Brazilians in the 66th minute before Juan Freytes put Fluminense ahead in the 83rd minute, slotting home after a scramble in the box.

Keno added a fourth in stoppage time to leave Fluminense on top of the group, level on 4 points with Borussia Dortmund ahead of their final game against South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in Miami on Wednesday.

A win or draw for the Rio club in their final group game will ensure their passage into the last 16.

Football legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink ‘latest star to be signed for Strictly 2025’

Football fans could see a familiar face on the Strictly Come Dancing dancefloor this year – as former Leeds player Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has reportedly been signed to compete on the BBC show

With the 2025 season of Strictly Come Dancing just weeks away from launching, more stars are being linked to the show – with a premiere league icon the latest to be tipped to star. Former Leeds United star Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is said to be swapping soccer for sequins as a contestant on the long-running BBC show.

The 53-year-old Dutch sportsman stands to be the latest in a long line of football legends to take to the Strictly dancefloor. He would follow the likes of Robbie Savage, Alex Scott and Tony Adams to bid for Glitterball Trophy victory.

The former striker was hired as a coach for the England national team in 2023, but stepped away from responsibilities in August last year following manager Gareth Southgate’s exit last August. With time on his hands, it is suggested Jimmy could be among the celebrities taking part in Strictly this year.

A source told The Sun: “Jimmy has a huge fanbase from his years playing in the Premier League and is a very likeable character. Show producers are always keen to book a retired footballer as it gets footie fans tuning into the series and becoming unlikely fans of the show.

“Jimmy has a competitive edge and is going to get his head in the game.” The Mirror has contacted representatives of Jimmy and the BBC for comment.

Strictly Come Dancing judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke

Olympian Sir Mo Farah, Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey – better known as Nitro – and former Big Brother contestant Yinrun Huang are among stars tipped to appear in the upcoming new season.

Judges Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke are all set to return for the 2025 season – which will be the 23rd in the long history of the show. But after the past two years, bosses are said to be worried about fresh scandal hitting the show.

Stirctly has been dragged into disrepute in recent years amid accusations that professional dancers have been physically abusive to their celebrity dance partners. While the celebs have also been accused of offensive behaviour.

Earlier this year, it was reported BBC bosses are practically paralyzed by a “terrible, terrible fear” that more scandal will hit the show – and there have been attempts to clean up the image of the series – and this could also impact star signings.

It has been suggested the BBC are taking steps to go risk free and leaving no stone unturned to make sure the line-up is as safe as possible for the 2025 season. Blue Peter presenters Joel Mawhinney and Shini Muthukrishnan are said to be under consideration – as is Tom Parker Bowles, the son of Queen Camilla.

Georgia Toffolo – the I’m a Celebrity Jungle Queen – is reportedly being lined up, as is Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts. Newly married former Love Island star Dani Dyer is being considered, it has been reported, with former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan another name high up on bosses’ list.

“There is a terrible, terrible fear among those high up that these awful things are going to keep happening and the show will be brought into disrepute again and again,” one well-place BBC insider has told MailOnline. “With that in mind, they are taking no chances.

“There will be stringent checks, and asking around, and digging into potential stars’ backgrounds to make sure that they’re not choosing anyone who might damage the show. For years, there was the whole Strictly “curse” where the contestants and professionals kept having affairs. But that stopped.

“Changes were made to the partnerships and it worked. There have been other issues in the past couple of years, though. What’s been even more embarrassing for the BBC is that Wynne and Jamie have been from their own stable of stars. Going forward, those at the top want a wholesome image to shine through. No more scandal – just joy.”

The report came after 2024 contestant Jamie Borthwick, who is known for playing Jay Brown in the BBC soap EastEnders, was forced to issue a groveling apology after footage was reportedly uncovered showing him making derogatory comments about the people of Blackpool.

Real Madrid vs Pachuca: FIFA Club World Cup – start, team news, lineups | Football News

Who: Real Madrid vs Pachuca
What: FIFA Club World Cup 2025
Where: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina, United States
When: Sunday, June 22,15:00 EDT | 12:00 PST | 19:00 GMT | 21:00 CEST

How to follow our coverage: We’ll have all the build-up from 12pm local (16:00 GMT ) on Al Jazeera Sport.

Spanish giants Real Madrid face Mexico’s Pachuca at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in a match that marks a rerun of the December FIFA Intercontinental Cup final.

Both sides are in need of a win in a group topped by Red Bull Salzburg.

Al Jazeera takes a look at a match that will heap the pressure on a potential loser.

How did Real Madrid and Pachuca fair in the first matches?

Real opened their tournament with a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal as Federico Valverde missed the chance to hand Los Blancos all three points with a late penalty.

Gonzalo Garcia, who was stepping in for the fever-stricken Kylian Mbappe, gave Real the lead before Ruben Neves levelled from the spot for the Saudi Pro League side before halftime.

The match was Xabi Alonso’s first in charge of Real since replacing Carlo Ancelotti as manager.

Pachuca were beaten 2-1 by Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg in their opening Group H fixture.

Oscar Gloukh gave Salzburg the lead just before the break. Bryan Gonzalez levelled in the 56th minute but Karim Onisiwo sealed the points with 14 minutes to play.

What is the latest on Kylian Mbappe?

Mbappe was discharged from the hospital on Thursday after experiencing an acute case of gastroenteritis.

It is not known when he will be able to play at the Club World Cup.

The French forward, who was in “rough shape” according to his coach Xabi Alonso, has not been able to train since last Sunday.

Gastroenteritis is also known as stomach flu, and symptoms can include vomiting and diarrhoea.

What happened the last time Real Madrid met Pachuca?

Real qualified directly for the final of FIFA’s Intercontinental Cup in December on account of winning the UEFA Champions League.

Pachuca, as North American champions, were required to qualify for the final – beating Egypt’s African champions Al Ahly to set up the meeting with Madrid in Qatar.

Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior were all on target as Real romped to a 3-0 win to lift the inaugural Intercontinental Cup.

The tournament effectively replaced the old format of the FIFA Club World Cup and will be played out exclusively by the continental champions from around the world each year.

How did Real Madrid qualify for the Club World Cup?

Real’s place at the tournament was confirmed by their 2022 UEFA Champions League final victory against Liverpool.

Their subsequent 2024 victory against Borussia Dortmund confirmed their meeting with Pachuca at last year’s Intercontinental Cup.

How did Pachuca qualify for the Club World Cup?

The Mexican side beat the Columbus Crew 3-0 in the 2024 final of North America’s continental club competition, the Concacaf Champions Cup.

Former English Premier League striker Salomon Rondon scored twice, with Miguel Rodriguez also netting, as Pachuca picked up a sixth continental title.

Cruz Azul beat Vancouver Whitecaps in last season’s CONCACAF Champions Cup final to set up their chance of appearing at the next FIFA Club World Cup.

How many Club World Cups have Real Madrid won?

Real Madrid’s win against Al Hilal in the 2023 final was their fifth Club World Cup in its various previous guises.

That does not include lifting the inaugural FIFA Intercontinental Cup in December after their victory against Pachuca, despite that competition taking on the former format of the Club World Cup.

Real Madrid team news

Mbappe’s absence means Real are likely to stick with Garcia in attack.

Brazilian forward Endrick, who would usually act as Mbappe’s understudy, has been forced to sit out the tournament with a hamstring injury. Ferland Mendy is also an injury absentee from the tournament.

Antonio Rudiger could be in line for a return to action following his own injury layoff, although the game is likely to be too soon for Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, Eder Militao and Eduardo Camavinga.

Pachuca team news

Pachuca are set to name an unchanged side with no new injury worries, meaning a link-up in attack for former Premier League pairing Rondon and Kenedy once more.

The latter, a former Chelsea forward, is on loan from fellow Mexican club Real Valladolid.

Real Madrid possible starting lineup:

Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Asencio, Huijsen, F Garcia; Valverde, Tchouameni, Bellingham; Rodrygo, G Garcia, Vinicius

Pachuca possible starting lineup:

Moreno; Rodriguez, Bauermann, Pereira, Gonzalez; Montiel, Pedraza, Palavecino; Dominguez, Rondon, Kenedy

Bayern beat Boca to seal Club World Cup last 16 spot | Football News

German giants Bayern Munich beat Argentina’s Boca Juniors 2-1 to seal progress at FIFA Club World Cup.

Michael Olise’s 84th-minute goal was enough to give Bayern Munich a 2-1 win over Boca Juniors in Miami Gardens, as the reigning German champions clinched a spot in the knockout phase of the Club World Cup.

After a scramble in the penalty area, Harry Kane sent the ball back to Olise, who blasted a shot into the bottom left corner of the net.

Boca had levelled Friday’s match in the 66th minute on a goal from Miguel Merentiel after Kane gave Bayern a first-half lead.

Bayern (2-0-0, 6 points) faced a much stiffer test than in their Group C opener, a 10-0 rout of semi-pro Auckland City (0-2-0, 0 points).

Boca Juniors (0-1-1, 1 point) still have a chance to advance, but they would need to rout Auckland City on Tuesday in Nashville and have Benfica (1-0-1, 4 points) lose to Bayern the same day in Charlotte.

For Boca’s tying goal, Alan Velasco delivered a pass from midfield into space for Merentiel to chase.

Merentiel beat Bayern defender Jonathan Tah to the ball, then rounded defender Josip Stanisic before firing a 12-yard, right-footed shot over the head of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and into the net.

Bayern also produced an impressive goal. Konrad Laimer fired an entry pass to the centre of the Boca penalty area.

Kingsley Coman knocked the ball back to Kane, who took a heavy touch but still reached the ball in time to fire in a 12-yard shot with his left foot.

Liverpool sign Wirtz shattering club record transfer fee | Football News

Liverpool delivered a huge statement of intent after winning the Premier League title by signing Germany star Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

The transfer fee could climb to 116 million pounds ($156m), which would make the 22-year-old Wirtz the most expensive player in the history of British football.

“I feel very happy and very proud,” Wirtz told the official Liverpool website on Friday. “Finally, it’s done, and I was waiting for a long time.

“I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: That I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.

“I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there, and they told me that it’s perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

Liverpool, determined to keep moving forward despite securing a record-tying 20th English top-flight title, splashed out a club record to bring in not only one of the best players from Germany, but one of the top youngsters in the world.

Wirtz has been a key first-team player for Leverkusen since he was 17. He was the outstanding attacking player in the team that won the Bundesliga and German Cup in 2023-24 without losing a game, and is a regular in Germany’s national team.

It is why Liverpool was ready to pay a guaranteed 100 million pounds ($134.4m), plus 16 million pounds ($21.5m) in potential add-ons. Wirtz had two years left on his contract, giving Leverkusen leverage in negotiations.

The Premier League record for an initial fee was set when Chelsea signed Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for 106.7 million pounds ($131.4m at the time) in 2023, before the London club agreed to pay up to 115 million pounds ($146m at the time) for midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton later that year.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot arrived last summer and signed just one outfield player — forward Federico Chiesa — for the 2024-25 season.

Chiesa barely played and the Reds won the league by 10 points, after which Slot and some of his players — including Virgil van Dijk — spoke about there being big plans for this transfer window.

Having already signed right-wing back Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for a reported 35 to 40 million euros ($39.7 million to $45.4 million), Liverpool has returned to the German club to take Wirtz, who rejected an opportunity to join Bayern Munich — a Bundesliga rival which has long pursued him.

One obstacle to that move was the size of the fee Leverkusen wanted. Another was concern over how Wirtz might fit into the same lineup as Jamal Musiala, Germany’s other standout young attacking midfielder.

Losing Wirtz leaves Leverkusen and its new coach, Erik ten Hag with an even bigger rebuild following the departure of Xabi Alonso for Real Madrid.

Just after his 17th birthday, Wirtz became the youngest player in Leverkusen’s history when he made his debut against Werder Bremen in May 2020, in an empty stadium at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A month later, he was the youngest player to score in Bundesliga history, though that record has since been toppled.

Wirtz’s versatile attacking midfield play was a vital ingredient in Alonso transforming Leverkusen into a team that could win the Bundesliga and German Cup without losing a game.

He and Alonso stayed for another sometimes-disappointing season, which ended with second place to Bayern in the league and a loss to Bayern in the Champions League round of 16.

Wirtz showed he can deal with adversity when a cruciate ligament tear in his knee ruled him out for almost all of 2022, including Alonso’s first games as coach, before he returned to power Leverkusen to its league and cup double in 2023-24.

Wirtz has become a vital player for the German national team with 29 caps. He played all five of its matches at Euro 2024 on home soil.

He has also had to contend with hostility from fans of his boyhood club Cologne, which he left for nearby Leverkusen at 16. Liverpool and Bayern were reportedly interested then, too.

Cologne claimed that deal broke an agreement between the clubs not to pursue each other’s youth players. Leverkusen argued Wirtz was so talented that he counted as a first-team player despite his age.

Cologne and Leverkusen are barely 10 kilometres (six miles) apart, so going to Liverpool will be the first time that Wirtz has moved away from his roots.

His parents, Hans Wirtz and Karin Gross, have played a big role in his career — they were also his agents until last year — and he is close to his older sister Juliane, a professional player for Werder Bremen in the women’s Bundesliga.

Wirtz’s decision to turn down Bayern and the Bundesliga for Liverpool has raised some eyebrows in Germany.

“I wouldn’t have thought Florian would make this switch so early,” former Germany great Lothar Matthaus told broadcaster n-tv last month. “But he wants to get out of his comfort zone.”

Wirtz seems likely to slot in as the No. 10 at Liverpool, a more creative solution in that role compared with the hard-running Dominik Szoboszlai.

Whether Slot also now pushes for a new striker as an upgrade to current options Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez remains to be seen.

Szoboszlai could drop back into one of the two deeper midfield positions, competing with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones.

Juventus players and coaches visit Trump at White House.

Members of the Italian soccer team Juventus visited with President Trump in the Oval Office on Wednesday afternoon.

Exactly why the gathering took place remains largely a mystery.

Six of the team’s players (Weston McKennie, Timothy Weah, Manuel Locatelli, Federico Gatti, Teun Koopmeiners and Dusan Vlahovic), their coach Igor Tudor, a handful of team executives and FIFA president Gianni Infantino stopped by hours before Juventus’ FIFA Club World Cup game against United Arab Emirates’ Al Ain that night at Audi Field.

Trump was presented with a Juventus jersey and one for next year’s World Cup, which the United States will be co-host with Canada and Mexico. But as Trump took questions from the media for about 15 minutes during the event, very little soccer was discussed.

Instead, the players stood behind him patiently — fidgeting now and then, their faces mainly expressionless — as Trump answered questions that mostly related to the potential of U.S. involvement in Israel’s war against Iran.

Later that night, speaking to a different group of reporters after his team’s 5-0 victory over Al Ain, Weah called the White House experience “a bit weird” and implied he and the other players weren’t given the option of declining the visit.

“They told us that we have to go and I had no choice but to go,” said Weah, a U.S. men’s national team member whose father George is a past winner of the prestigious France Football Ballon d’Or award and was the president of Liberia from 2018-2024. “So [I] showed up.”

FIFA declined to comment. The White House and Juventus did not respond to requests for comment from The Times.

While Weah said he thought his first White House visit “was a cool experience,” he added that “I’m not one for the politics, so it wasn’t that exciting.”

“When [Trump] started talking about all the politics with Iran and everything, it’s kind of like, I just want to play football, man,” Weah said.

Fellow USMNT player McKennie had made critical comments about Trump during the Black Lives Matter movement in June 2020.

“I don’t think that Trump is the right one for the job as the president,” McKennie said at the time. “I think he’s ignorant. I don’t support him a bit. I don’t think he’s a man to stand by his word. In my eyes, you can call him racist.”

Still, during his introductory comments, Trump briefly singled out Weah and McKennie as “my American players” when he mentioned that night’s game.

“Good luck,” he said while shaking both of their hands in what had the potential to be an awkward moment. “I hope you guys are the two best players on the field.”

That’s not to say, however, that there weren’t any awkward moments. Because there were — none more so than when Trump brought up “men playing in women’s sports,” then looked over his right shoulder and asked: “Could a woman make your team, fellas? Tell me. You think?”

When no players answered, Trump said, “You’re being nice,” then turned to face the other direction and asked the same question.

“We have a very good women’s team,” Juventus general manager Damien Comolli replied.

Trump asked, “But they should be playing with women, right?”

When he got no response, Trump smiled and turned back toward the reporters.

“See, they’re very diplomatic,” he said.

Trump made a couple of other attempts to involve the soccer contingent in the discussion. At one point, the president used the word “stealth” when discussing U.S. military planes, then turned around and remarked, “You guys want to be stealthy tonight. You can be stealthy — you’ll never lose, right?”

The players did not seem to respond.

For the final question of the session, a reporter favorably compared Trump’s border policy to that of former President Biden and asked, “What do you attribute that success to?”

Trump looked behind him and stated, “See, that’s what I call a good question, fellas.”

Once again, the players did not appear to respond.

Messi inspires Inter Miami to win against Porto at Club World Cup | Football News

Lionel Messi hits late winner against Porto to push Inter Miami to verge of qualification at FIFA Club World Cup.

Lionel Messi scored his first goal of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup with an exquisite free kick to inspire Inter Miami to a 2-1 victory over two-time European champions Porto.

The Herons trailed 1-0 at the break, but Telasco Segovia tied it two minutes into the second half off a cross into the box from Marcelo Weigandt.

Then it was time for the 37-year-old Argentinian to add a trademark goal to a resume that already assures he’ll go down as one of the game’s greatest stars.

Samu Omorodion scored on a penalty kick in the opening minutes after a video review for the Portuguese club’s first goal of the tournament.

Both teams were held to scoreless draws in their opening Group A matches.

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano praised his side’s performance level against a side regarded as among the elite in Europe.

“We were working really, really hard against a team that have a lot of quality and a high level, but today, we showed to the world and to ourselves that we can compete against any team,” Inter’s Argentinean manager said.

“This match, the first half was very, very good, also. The players understood that they can do it. When we are together, when we are next to our teammates, we can do something amazing.”

Messi was taken down just outside the penalty area by Rodrigo Mora on a run down the middle of the field.

The crowd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium was chanting “Messi!” Messi! Messi!” before his left-footed blast cleared the Porto wall and ripped the net in the top right corner in the 54th minute.

Inter Miami returns to South Florida on Monday, knowing a victory over Brazilian club Palmeiras at Hard Rock Stadium will lock up its spot in the Round of 16.

In desperate need of a win, Porto closes out group play against Egypt’s Al Ahly at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

How did Bayern Munich and Boca Juniors fare in their opening Group C fixtures?

Bayern Munich began their campaign in record-breaking fashion, becoming the first team to score double digits in a single CWC game when they thumped Auckland City 10-0 on Sunday.

German international Jamal Musiala marked his return from injury with a brilliant second-half hat-trick in a commanding team display.

Boca Juniors played out a 2-2 draw with Benfica on Monday in a feisty encounter that resulted in three red cards.

The Buenos Aires side were ahead 2-0 just before half-time but let the three points slip after squandering the lead to the Portuguese side.

Why were Boca’s Ander Herrera and Nicolas Figal given harsh suspensions?

Boca Juniors players Ander Herrera and Nicolas Figal were handed four-match bans by FIFA after being sent off in their CWC opener, a spokesperson for the Argentinian club said on Wednesday.

Boca disagreed with the sanctions imposed on their players after Benfica’s Andrea Belotti received a two-match ban for catching Ayrton Costa in the head with a high boot in the 72nd minute.

“We have already contacted FIFA to submit an appeal,” a club spokesperson said.

Spanish midfielder Herrera, who was subbed off due to a muscle injury, was shown a red card in the 45th minute after protesting to Mexican referee Cesar Ramos from the bench over a penalty awarded to the Portuguese side.

Defender Figal was sent off in the 88th minute with a straight red card for a foul on Florentino Luis when the match was tied at 2-2.

Have Bayern and Boca ever played before?

The teams last met on November 27, 2001, in the knockout stage of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo, Japan.

The contest was billed as a clash of the super clubs between the then-two-time Copa Libertadores champion Boca Juniors taking on the might of the newly crowned UEFA Champions League winners, Bayern Munich.

Bayern beat Boca 1-0 in extra time courtesy of a 109th minute strike by Samuel Kuffour.

Friday’s match will be only the fourth time they’ve played in 100 years.

Team News: Bayern Munich

Out: Hiroki Ito (metatarsal fracture), Alphonso Davies (cruciate ligament tear), Kim Min-jae (foot injury)
Doubtful: none

Manager Vincent Kompany has a full squad available to him and is expected to field a similar starting XI to the side that thrashed Auckland.

Star forward Harry Kane, who failed to score in the goal fest against Auckland City, is again expected to lead the line.

Team News: Boca Juniors

Out: Sergio Romero (knee injury)
Doubtful: none
Suspended: Herrera, Figal

Boca Juniors manager Miguel Russo has two large holes to fill with former Manchester United star Herrera and Figal both suspended until the semifinal stage of the tournament.

Tomas Belmonte replaced Herrera in the midfield against Benfica and is a near-certainty to get the start in the key central midfield role. Figal’s role in the back four will likely be occupied by Marcos Rojo.

Russo is expected to deploy the same 4-2-3-1 set-up, just as he did against Benfica.

What the teams had to say

Manuela Neuer, Bayern Munich goalkeeper:

“We’re definitely expecting a good atmosphere. We saw how the match against Benfica went,” Neuer told fcbayern.com.

“We’re getting more and more focused as the game approaches. In terms of analysis of the opposition too, we know exactly what we’ll need in the match. We keep increasing the intensity before reducing it a little on the day before the match because the temperatures too play a role.”

Miguel Russo, Boca Juniors manager:

“We have to be up to the task. It will be a physical match like [against Benfica].

“They’re [Bayern Munich are] a big opponent. Historically, they’ve won a lot. But Argentine football is big too. … We welcome these challenges. But we have to know that Friday’s game will be tougher than today’s [vs Benfica].”

How much is the prize money for the Club World Cup?

The total prize pot is $1bn with the champions earning up to $125m.

About half of the $1bn will be divided between the 32 clubs with the amount per club based on sporting and commercial criteria. It means that clubs such as Manchester City and Real Madrid will receive a greater percentage than smaller clubs in a model FIFA developed with the European Club Association.

A further $475m will be awarded on a performance-related basis. Hence, the team with the most wins over a potential seven matches will bank more cash with a maximum pot of $125m available.

Juventus destroy Al Ain 5-0 in FIFA Club World Cup after Trump visit | Football News

Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceicao each score two goals hours after the Italian team visit the White House to meet the US president.

Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceicao have both bagged braces as Juventus have hammered Al Ain 5-0 in their Club World Cup opener in Washington, DC.

The Italian giants, who sent a delegation to visit United States President Donald Trump at the White House earlier on Wednesday, cruised to the top of Group G above Manchester City, who beat Wydad AC in an earlier fixture.

Some Juventus players and staff were asked by Trump, whom they presented with a club shirt, whether they thought a woman would be able to make their first team.

Trump was making a point against transgender athletes, but Juve general manager Damien Comolli replied that the club had a “very good women’s team”.

The Juventus players stayed silent but were far more expressive later in the day, letting their on-field play do the talking as they dismantled the United Arab Emirates’s Al Ain at Audi Field.

Kolo Muani, who extended his loan from Paris Saint-Germain to play in the tournament in the US, opened the scoring after 11 minutes with a towering header from Alberto Costa’s cross.

Igor Tudor’s Juventus doubled the lead 10 minutes later when Conceicao, on loan from Porto, skipped away from one defender in the box before firing home with the help of a deflection.

Turkish forward Kenan Yildiz netted the third after 31 minutes, carving out some space on the edge of the box and drilling in at the near post.

French striker Kolo Muani grabbed his second with a deft finish in first-half stoppage time to pile on the misery for Al Ain.

Kouame Autonne had a goal disallowed for offside for the UAE side before Conceicao struck again, benefitting from another slight deflection.

Kolo Muani might have completed his hat-trick when sent through, but goalkeeper Rui Patricio shut him down well, and Douglas Luiz blasted narrowly off-target late on.

Juventus, who finished fourth in Serie A, are hoping to make up for a trophyless season with success in the Club World Cup.

Inter Miami vs Porto: FIFA Club World Cup – team news, start time, lineups | Football News

Who: Inter Miami vs Porto
What: FIFA Club World Cup
Where: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, United States
When: Thursday, June 19 – 15:00 EDT local time | 12:00 PST | 19:00 GMT | 21:00 CEST

How to follow our coverage: We’ll have all the build-up from 11pm (16:00 GMT) on Al Jazeera Sport.

Inter Miami and Porto both play their second match of the FIFA Club World Cup in Florida on Thursday, in what is effectively a must-not-lose match for the pair.

Both took a point from their opening match in Group A, but a defeat in the second round of matches would heap pressure on the losing side’s final fixture in the group.

Al Jazeera Sport takes a look at a game that could be a huge step forward for Inter Miami, spearheaded by Lionel Messi, or two-time Champions League winners, Porto.

What happened in Inter Miami and Porto’s Club World Cup opening games?

Inter Miami, one of the host nation’s representatives, opened the tournament with a 0-0 draw at their home stadium against Al Ahly on Saturday.

The Egyptian giants, the most successful club in world football, dominated the first half but held on in the second as Messi and Co found their footing at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Miami had goalkeeper Oscar Ustari to thank for saving a penalty from Al Ahly forward Trezeguet just before half-time.

Porto were pushed all the way by Brazilian club Palmeiras as they too returned a 0-0 draw in the match played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford – the New Jersey venue that will host both the Club World Cup and FIFA 2026 World Cup finals.

Palmeiras had 17 shots with five on target, compared to Porto’s 11, of which the keeper was only tested on five occasions.

How did Inter Miami qualify for the Club World Cup?

Miami’s qualification was not without controversy. The Floridian club recorded the most points in Major League Soccer’s (MLS) regular season, handing them a place at the Club World Cup instead of LA Galaxy, who won the MLS Cup, which is regarded as the highest prize in the MLS.

FIFA announced Miami’s addition to the Club World Cup in October after they secured the MLS record with a 6-2 win over New England Revolution to reach 74 points – one better than the previous record set by New England in 2021.

How does Porto qualify for the Club World Cup?

Porto qualified for the Club World Cup via the UEFA ranking pathway following their strong Champions League performances between 2021 and 2024.

The 30-time Portuguese league champions won the European Cup in 1987, as it was then named, and the Champions League in 2004.

The Benfica-based club finished 11 points off champions Sporting Lisbon in this season’s Portuguese domestic league.

What is Porto’s take on Inter Miami?

“I watched the match between Miami and Al Ahly. I saw that they are two very tough opponents with a lot of intensity,” Porto’s Argentinean defender, Alan Varela, said.

Commenting on his fellow countryman, Messi, the 23-year-old added: “Inter have the best player in the world, so we’re going to try to play and fight until the end, just like we did [against Palmeiras] and just like the club demands.

“The group is wide open, there is a long way to go. There are still two matches, so we’re going to try to get the victory in each.”

What is David Beckham’s role at Inter Miami?

Former England international Beckham is a co-owner of Miami. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder had a clause in his Major League Soccer contract, during his spell as a player with LA Galaxy, that offered him the chance to buy a future MLS franchise. Beckham took up the opportunity to buy a $25m stake in the franchise, which would become Inter Miami, in 2014.

The Miami-based franchise eventually debuted in 2020 and is also co-owned by American business magnates, Jorge and Jose Mas, although Beckham is very much the figurehead of the club.

Head-to-head

This is the first meeting between the MLS franchise and the Portuguese giants.

Inter Miami team news

Inter Miami have no news injuries to report ahead of the match against Porto, and are expected to name the same starting lineup as they did in the first fixture.

Porto team news

Porto’s stand-in goalkeeper, Claudio Ramos, will start in between the sticks once again following his key performance that frustrated Palmeiras in their opening match.

Ramos is currently deputising for Porto’s injured captain, Diogo Costa, as the Portuguese side are also expected to name an unchanged side.

Inter Miami and Porto potential starting lineups

Porto: Ramos, Fernandes, Pedro, Marcano, Joao Mario, Varela, Veiga, Moura, Vieira, Mora, Samu

Real Madrid draw 1-1 with Al Hilal at FIFA Club World Cup | Football News

Real Madrid draw 1-1 with Al Hilal in lively FIFA Club World Cup opener for the Spanish and Saudi giants in Miami.

Real Madrid laboured to a 1-1 draw against a spirited Al Hilal in the FIFA Club World Cup as Xabi Alonso’s managerial debut failed to launch in Florida.

The 15-time European champions delivered only flashes of promise on Wednesday in searing Miami heat at a nearly sold-out Hard Rock Stadium.

Gonzalo Garcia, stepping in for the fever-stricken Kylian Mbappe, gave Real the lead in the 34th minute with a composed finish after a fine passing move on the right flank.

Portuguese international midfielder Ruben Neves levelled from the spot before halftime, stepped up and sent keeper Thibaut Courtois the wrong way, as Simone Inzaghi’s men showed defensive grit and enough attacking intent to rattle their illustrious opponents.

A last-gasp missed penalty from Federico Valverde summed up a day when Real’s legs, and ideas, wilted in the heat and humidity.

Defeat would have been hard on Al Hilal under new coach Simone Inzaghi. Saudi Arabia’s most successful team had its own chances to win at Hard Rock Stadium before a VAR call saw Madrid awarded the late spot kick.

“The first half was not as good as the second; we improved and had better chances and control,” said Alonso, evaluating his side’s performance with the official broadcaster of the event, DAZN.

“Every game, we need to take positives, we can learn and keep improving.”

On the heat in Miami that hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius), Alonso added, “It was a really demanding environment.”

While it was an underwhelming start for Alonso, Inzaghi’s Al Hilal made an early statement of its potential by holding its own against the Spanish power.

It might have been even better. Leonardo had three chances in front of goal and failed to hit the target. Had star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic been fit and available, Al Hilal could have been celebrating a win.

RB Salzburg and Pachuca meet in the other Group H fixture later on Wednesday.

Real will next face the Mexican side on Sunday, while Al Hilal will take on Salzburg in what could prove a decisive clash for qualification to the knockout stage.

Alonso’s was not the only debut as Trent Alexander-Arnold made his first start for Los Blancos since joining from Liverpool.

“Incredible day to have made a debut for Real Madrid, almost every player dreams of it,” the England international defender told DAZN.

“Of course, there is disappointment not to have won the game, and that is the mentality you need as a Real player – to expect to win every game.

“Disappointed not to do that, but there were a lot of positives in the second half.

“We kept the ball better in the second half, in the heat here, it’s best to keep hold of it for as long as you can and let the other side do the running.

“We made them sit deep in the second half, put crosses in and got shots off. We had the late penalty, but these things happen in football.”

Alexander-Arnold confirmed his move to Real Madrid before the end of the season, having revealed he would not be renewing his contract with his boyhood club, and Premier League champions, Liverpool.

The 26-year-old added that he has already noticed the difference in size of the club since moving to Real, “We dominated the stands today as well, and the support was amazing. I felt support from the moment I signed for the club,” he said.

“Their fan base is truly global. You feel it everywhere, from the hotel to social media.”

FIFA Club World Cup: Inter Milan held by Monterrey; River Plate beat Urawa | Football News

A stunning header from the veteran Spanish defender delights the pro-Mexican fans as the European giants are held.

Sergio Ramos rolled back the years to score a brilliant header as Monterrey held Inter Milan to a 1-1 draw in their FIFA Club World Cup clash at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, United States.

The former Spain and Real Madrid defender towered above the Inter defenders to find the back of the net and give his Mexican club a lead in the 25th minute of their Group E fixture, much to the delight of the thousands of Monterrey fans gathered at the famous venue in Southern California on Tuesday.

European giants Inter levelled the scoreline in the 42nd minute, as Lautaro Martinez tapped in from close range from a Carlos Augusto pass in a superbly crafted team goal.

However, it was Ramos’s goal and ensuing celebrations – both by the player and the Monterrey fans – that stole the limelight on the fourth day of the club competition.

“There is always joy to contribute to the team by scoring, but if we can get points, that’s even better,” the Monterrey captain said after the match.

“We played very well as a team. Of course, football showcases the goal, but we’re here to share this experience.”

Both sides had plenty of opportunities to take the lead in the second half but missed their chances, with a Martinez strike being called offside in the 68th minute.

It was a hard-fought draw for Inter, who lost the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on May 31 and welcomed new manager Cristian Chivu.

According to the 39-year-old Ramos, his team lacked the energy in the final moments of the game.

“For most of this match, we created quite a few chances, but at this moment, we don’t have much energy,” he said.

Monterrey and Inter have one point apiece in the group led by River Plate, who beat Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 in the earlier game in Seattle.

Goals from Facundo Colidio (12 minutes), Sebastian Driussi (48 minutes) and Maximiliano Meza (73 minutes) helped the Argentinian club beat their Japanese opponents with ease, but they lost their forward to an ankle injury while scoring the second goal.

A successfully converted 58th-minute penalty from Yusuke Matsuo brought Urawa back into the game momentarily, but Meza’s goal 15 minutes later consolidated River Plate’s lead again.

On the second match day for the group on Saturday, Inter take on Urawa, and Monterrey face River Plate.

In the Group F fixtures on Tuesday, Brazilian Serie A side Fluminense held German club Borussia Dortmund to a goalless draw at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, while Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa beat South Korean side Ulsan HD 1-0 in Orlando, Florida.

Iqraam Rayners scored in the 36th minute for Mamelodi, who now lead Group F with three points. Dortmund and Fluminense have one point each.

Real Madrid’s Mbappe a doubt for Al Hilal clash at Club World Cup | Football News

French forward Kylian Mbappe is battling illness on the eve of Club World Cup opener for Real Madrid against Al Hilal.

Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe is a doubt for the club’s opening Club World Cup match against Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal after missing training on Tuesday due to illness.

The club said Mbappe had been suffering from a fever, with newly-appointed manager Xabi Alonso, who will make his debut in the dugout in Wednesday’s match, adding that a decision on his participation would be made in the morning.

“Kylian was a bit better this morning, but he was not fully fit, so we thought it would be best for him to skip training. Let’s see how it evolves, and we’ll make a last-minute decision,” Alonso told a news conference on the eve of the clash at the Hard Rock Stadium.

The potential absence of Mbappe leaves Alonso facing a selection dilemma as the French player is currently the only recognised centre-forward in the squad.

Brazilian teenager Endrick, who could have provided an alternative, was left out of the travelling party following a leg muscle injury sustained during Real’s La Liga fixture at Sevilla last month.

Mbappe has been instrumental for Real Madrid this season, scoring 31 La Liga goals since his high-profile summer move from Paris St Germain.

Regardless of Mbappe’s potential absence, Alonso insisted his team would need to press “like a unit”.

“Defensive work is important. It’s one of the tasks we need to address in the short term, and in the long term, it will be decisive for our success,” the Spaniard said.

Real Madrid enter the tournament as one of the favourites, having dominated European football over the last decade, winning five of the last 10 Champions League titles.

Al Hilal secured their place in the competition by triumphing in the AFC Champions League in 2021, and will look to capitalise on any weakness in Madrid’s lineup.

Real and Al-Hilal were drawn in Group F with Mexican side Pachuca and RB Salzburg of Austria.

Vinicius Junior: Four people sentenced over effigy of Real Madrid star | Football News

It’s the fourth court sentencing in a year related to racial abuse and threats directed at the Real Madrid footballer.

Four people have been handed suspended jail sentences of between 14 and 22 months by a Madrid court after being found guilty of a hate crime related to an effigy of Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, Spain’s La Liga has said.

“The defendant who posted the video online received a special disqualification from working in education, sports, or recreational youth settings for four years and three months, while the others received three years and seven months,” a La Liga statement said on Monday.

They were all involved in hanging a banner reading “Madrid hates Real” and an inflatable black effigy in a replica of the Brazilian’s number 20 T-shirt on a bridge before a Copa del Rey match against Atletico Madrid in January 2023.

According to the ruling, one defendant was sentenced to 15 months in prison for a hate crime and an additional seven months for making threats, having distributed images of the act online. The other three were sentenced to seven months in prison for hate crimes and seven months for threats.

They will not serve prison time, however, after all four signed a letter of apology to Vinicius, Real Madrid, La Liga and the Spanish football federation (RFEF).

The first defendant was also fined 1,084 euros ($1,257) and the other three 720 euros ($835), with additional punishments including a 1km (0.6 miles) restraining order from Vinicius, his home and workplace, and a ban on approaching football stadiums during La Liga or RFEF matches.

They will all be required to participate in an educational programme on equal treatment and non-discrimination for the prison sentences imposed to be suspended.

There was no immediate confirmation from the court and no immediate reaction from Vinicius, who is currently playing in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Victim of repeated racial abuse

La Liga has filed complaints about various incidents of racial abuse and threats against the Brazilian international in recent years.

On June 10, 2024, three Valencia football fans were sentenced to eight months in prison for hate crimes directed against Vinicius in May 2023 in what was the first conviction for racist insults in a football stadium in Spain.

Last September, a Spanish court sentenced a Mallorca fan who racially abused Vinicius in February 2023, and former Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze a week later, to a year in prison and issued a three-year stadium ban.

Last month, five people were handed 12-month suspended prison sentences and fines for racially abusing the Real Madrid forward during a December 2022 match in a landmark first ruling in Spain to condemn racist insults in a football stadium as a hate crime.

PSG dismantle Atletico Madrid 4-0 in impressive Club World Cup opener | Football News

Champions League winners PSG beat fellow European heavyweights Atletico Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, the US.

Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain opened their Club World Cup campaign with an impressive 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, underlining to their rivals that they will likely be the team to beat in this tournament.

PSG largely dominated Atletico at the Rose Bowl on Sunday in their first match since trouncing Inter Milan 5-0 to win its first Champions League title on May 31.

Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha scored in the first half, while Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in scored against 10-man Atletico in the second half of their Group B clash.

The European giants met at the venue of the 1994 World Cup final for one of the highest-profile matches in the group stage of the first 32-team edition of the Club World Cup.

Ousmane Dembele did not feature for PSG after reportedly injuring a quadricep while playing for France on June 6. Goncalo Ramos replaced Dembele in Luis Enrique’s only change to the starting lineup from the Champions League final.

Enrique wore shorts and a training shirt on the sideline while coaching PSG in 31 Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) midday California heat.

PSG controlled possession early, and Ruiz capitalised from just outside the penalty area in the 19th minute. The Spanish midfielder long coveted by Atletico beat Jan Oblak with a clever strike into the far corner.

Atletico got a golden chance to tie it in first-half injury time, but Gianluigi Donnarumma swallowed up Antoine Griezmann’s chance in the box.

Moments later, Vitinha slipped through the Atletico defence and scored on the break.

Julian Alvarez appeared to pull one back for Atletico in the second half, but his goal was chalked off after VAR determined Koke had fouled Desire Doue in the build-up.

Atletico’s Clement Lenglet was sent off in the 78th minute with his second yellow card on a frustrating day that left coach Diego Simeone visibly furious at both the referees and his players’ mistakes.

Alexander Sorloth somehow missed an open net in the 82nd minute for Atletico in a move that made Simeone fall to his knees in disbelief.

Mayulu secured PSG’s victory five minutes later, and Lee converted a penalty with the final kick of the match from the spot after a handball by Robin Le Normand in the box.

Man of the match Vitinha told DAZN it was a “very good performance” by his side.

“We did a very good game, it is difficult with this temperature. We did well against a tough team, we controlled all of the game. We are happy with the result,” he said.

“The toughest thing to do in football is to maintain the level, and that is what I try to do.”

PSG coach Enrique also hailed his side’s performance.

“I think every single player showed their best quality to the team,” he told DAZN.

“As a coach, I am happy. Really great to feel that love [from the stadium]. We are happy and want to continue with our ways.”

In Sunday’s earlier game, Bayern Munich romped to a 10-0 victory over Auckland City as Jamal Musiala had a hat-trick in a 17-minute span of the second half in front of a crowd that unfurled a banner urging to “Smash FIFA!” while accusing the governing body of mismanagement.

Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise scored two goals each for the Bundesliga champions, who went ahead on Coman’s goal six minutes in. Bayern had a 17-1 advantage in shots on target.

Musiala, a 22-year-old midfielder, replaced Harry Kane in the 61st minute, making his first appearance since April 4 after recovering from a hamstring injury. He scored in the 67th minute, converted a penalty kick in the 73rd and scored again in the 84th.

Before a crowd of 21,152 at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, fans displayed a red-and-white banner referring to the 2015 raid by US law enforcement at a Zurich hotel that led to the arrest of many football officials over corruption allegations: “10 Years Baur Au Lac – World Football Is More Poorly Governed than Before! Smash FIFA!”

Israel-Iran attacks: Mehdi Taremi unable to join Inter for Club World Cup | Football News

The forward, set to link up with Inter Milan in LA, is stranded in Iran after his home country’s airspace was shut down.

Inter Milan’s Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi could miss the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States after being unable to leave his home country to join his team amid Iran’s airspace closure due to its ongoing exchange of aerial fire with Israel.

Taremi, who was named in Inter’s squad for the 32-team tournament, was expected to link up with his team in Los Angeles as they gear up for the tournament, but media reports in Italy and the US said on Saturday that the striker is likely to miss the first match on Tuesday and perhaps the entire competition.

“The Iranian striker will not join the Nerazzurri, neither for the first match nor for the others,” Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reported on Saturday.

“Inter have been in close contact with the Iranian authorities in Italy over the last 24 hours to comfort the player and try [to find] a solution that is currently impossible. The player is in Tehran in a safe place and sheltered from the bombings,” the report added.

The Italian side open their campaign against the Mexican side, Monterrey FC, at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Los Angeles, on Tuesday, but Taremi is unlikely to be part of the squad.

The 32-year-old captains Iran and was among the goal scorers as they beat North Korea in their AFC World Cup qualifying match at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran on June 10. A day later, he won the inaugural Iranian Toopa Award (Golden Ball).

While it is unclear when the forward was scheduled to fly out of Tehran, his departure for the US was put on hold when Israel began its attacks on Iran on Friday morning, leading to the indefinite closure of its airspace.

Iran responded to the attacks later on the same day, and both countries have been involved in an exchange of fire ever since.

Taremi, who joined Inter Milan on a three-year contract in July 2024, has scored three goals in 43 appearances for the Nerazzurri.

Milan and their opening-game opponents Monterrey are placed in Group E for the Club World Cup alongside Argentinian club River Plate and Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds.
