I jailed Babes in the Wood child murderer after something incredible happened

As a victim of ‘Babes in the Wood’ killer Russell Bishop describes how the monster has cast a dark shadow over her life, we speak to the Detective Inspector responsible for putting him behind bars

Rachael as a young girl
Rachael has spent decades looking after her shoulder after the horrific attack

Malcolm Bacon’s first major inquiry as a Detective Inspector was more than 30 years ago but he can remember the details as if it were yesterday. Rachael Watts was just seven years old when she was kidnapped in broad daylight before being sexually assaulted and strangled.

The schoolgirl survived against the odds and helped to convict evil Russell Bishop, who had been wrongfully acquitted of murdering Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway a few years before in the infamous ‘Babes in the Wood‘ case. Now 42, Rachael is the subject of a new Sky documentary about the impact of the monster’s attack on her life.

Retired police officer Malcolm appears in the two-part programme and is convinced Bishop would have struck again if he hadn’t been caught. “He was a psychopath, a really dangerous person who would absolutely have killed again,” he told The Mirror. “I’m fully convinced he thought he had killed Rachael. He thought he could get away with it but she turned into an incredible witness.”

Malcolm Bacon
Retired detective inspector Malcolm Bacon said Bishop ‘wasn’t very bright’(Image: Sky UK)

Rachael became a victim of predator Bishop in 1990, soon after moving to the Brighton area of East Sussex with her family. She had planned to roller skate to a friend’s house but bumped her head, returned home and was given a pound by her father to buy sweets from the local shop.

The schoolgirl took a wrong turn on her way home and asked a man for directions. It was Bishop, who was tinkering with his red Ford Cortina. Without saying a word in reply to her, he threw her in the boot of his car and drove his victim to a well-known beauty spot in the South Downs.

“When the information came in that a girl had been discovered at Devil’s Dyke, the main thing was to preserve the scenes,” said Malcolm. “The first ‘scene’ was Rachael herself and the second was the Dyke, which was a huge area. There were only a few roads in and out, so once we sealed them off, we were fairly happy we had a sterile area.”

When the predator reached Devil’s Dyke, he put Rachael on the back seat of his car and removed her clothing before sexually assaulting and strangling her. He then discarded her underneath some gorse bushes.

“He disposed of me like he was flytipping,” said the survivor, fighting back tears in the documentary. “Just like I was an old mattress or something, just thrown into a bush somewhere. He left me thinking I was dead.”

The terrified schoolgirl came around in the dark, and as she stumbled out of the bushes, a nearby couple who had been enjoying the sunset wrapped her in a blanket and sought help. Heartbreakingly, she asked them: “You two aren’t kidnappers, are you?”.

Rachael today
Rachael took off her roller skates and offered her attacker money in a bid to escape(Image: Sky UK)

The former DI is convinced Bishop thought he had killed his victim, saying: “She was strangled and suffocated to the point what’s known as petechial haemorrhages took place (tiny pinpoint spots of bleeding under the skin caused by straining for a long time) which are quite indicative of a strangle injury. Usually, they only come out at the point of death, really. That’s how close to death she was.”

The young girl’s memory of her ordeal until she was strangled unconscious would prove vital. “Rachael was a fabulous witness,” said the retired cop. “She was able to explain everything she saw, the man in the red car with a moustache. In the boot of the car, she saw a can of WD40, the same that her dad used. She found a hammer too and started banging on the boot lid.”

Incredibly, Rachael had the presence of mind to take off her roller skates in the boot of the car, to aid any chance of escape once the boot was opened. “She formulated an escape plan,” said Malcolm. “She offered Bishop the pound she had been given if he would let her go.”

Four years earlier, a double child murder had taken place in Brighton’s Wild Park, which became known as the ‘Babes in the Wood’ murders in the press after the children’s tale of the same name. Nicola and Karen were nine-year-old schoolgirls when they went out to play and never came home.

Their bodies were found in the park close to their homes the next day. They had known Rachael’s future attacker, Bishop, then 20 and a local labourer and petty criminal, and he was charged with killing them.

But the monster’s then-girlfriend, Jennifer Johnston, changed her story in the witness box after previously saying a blue sweatshirt found close to the scene had been his. And to the horror of police and psychologists involved in the case, Bishop was found not guilty by a jury at Lewes Crown Court in December 1987.

With the predator free to roam the streets once more, the experts’ worst fears came true. Rachael was his next victim, with retired DI Malcolm describing her as an “articulate, intelligent seven-year-old girl who met a monster”. This time, Bishop wouldn’t be able to evade justice thanks in large part to the bravery of his victim, who picked him out of an identity parade and testified against him in court.

“Her first account got us all going,” said Malcolm. “The red car was mentioned in a first briefing, and an intelligence report had come through days before saying Bishop had been seen in a red car.

“He went on to admit to driving it and put himself at the point of the abduction at the relevant time. I arrested him on suspicion of kidnapping and indecent assault, and we got his car, opened up the boot and in there was WD40 and a hammer with chip marks on the boot, corresponding to what Rachael had said.”

“He tried to become chatty with us,” added the former police officer. “‘What’s going on? You trying to fit me up? Of course, it’s not me. He was a psychopath; his whole entity was to look after himself. He would try and manipulate things, but he wasn’t very bright.”

Bishop was later jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 14 years for attempted murder, kidnapping and indecent assault.

Karen and Nicola
Karen Hadaway and Nicola Fellows’ families waited a long time for justice(Image: PA)

“He was prowling, we suspect he had been following other little girls around,” said Malcolm. “We did get another report from another girl who was followed by a man in a red car. If the circumstances were correct, she might have been another victim.”

Dubbed ‘Britain’s bravest girl’ for stopping a paedophile killer from striking again, Rachael’s life was irreparably blighted by Bishop, suffering from crippling depression, agoraphobia and complex post-traumatic stress along the way.

As a teenager, she had frequent nightmares where the predator would climb through her window and kill her. The survivor had four children and, in the course of her adult life, moved around a lot and changed her name a couple of times in a bid to remain anonymous.

But in 2022, Rachael told her children the secret she was “going to take to my grave” after Bishop died from brain cancer. Today, she’s speaking out in public to rid herself of the “boulder” of a secret that has cast a dark shadow over her life.

As for the families of the ‘Babes in the Wood’, they finally achieved some form of justice in 2018, after the 2005 scrapping of the ‘double jeopardy’ rule combined with advances in forensic technology meant evil Bishop was able to be tried for a second time. This time, he was rightfully convicted for his abhorrent crimes, receiving two life sentences and ordered to serve a minimum of 36 years behind bars.

In April last year, Nicola and Karen’s families received apologies from Sussex Police for failures in the original investigation into their murders. And in 2022, Bishop’s ex-girlfriend, Johnson, who had changed her evidence at his original trial to devastating effect, was jailed for six years for perjury and perverting the course of justice.

Tyson Fury gets huge boost as his hit Netflix show At Home With The Furys returns

Heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury and his wife Paris are set to get a huge boost following his latest retirement as they open their doors for their own Netflix show once again

Tyson Fury and his wife Paris are set to open to doors of their home once again as their reality show returns. The professional heavyweight champion boxer is preparing to exit the ring once again and will take fans along for the ride.

At Home With The Furys, which aired on Netflix in 2023, saw Tyson try to embrace retirement with wife Paris and their seven children. The no holds barred show followed the family’s lavish holidays and A-list encounters but also their reality of changing nappies and doing the school run.

It was a hit with fans the first time around, as Paris received huge praise for manning the household while Tyson focused on his career. Now, the pair are hoping to reach the same success again with a brand new series.

TYSON AND PARIS FURY WITH THEIR CHILDREN
The show will follow Tyson and Paris with their seven children

In series two, Tyson, 36, will give retirement another shot, having previously announced his retirement several times before, only to return to the world of boxing.

The programme will also follow Paris as she explores new business opportunities and taking on the big task of planning her daughter’s 16th birthday as well as her wedding vow renewal.

There will also be a family road trip to Monaco to invest in a racehorse. Series one featured Tyson’s younger brother Tommy Fury alongside his fiancee Molly-Mae Hague.

However, since appearing on the show, Molly-Mae and Tommy shocked fans with their breakup last summer. The couple, who are parents to two-year-old daughter Bambi, have slowly been rekindling their relationship.

During their separation, Molly-Mae filmed her own candid TV show with Amazon Prime. Molly-Mae: Behind It All saw the influencer try to come to terms with single life as she navigated her career and motherhood.

However, her recently released part two saw her confirm her romance with Tommy is back on. She told viewers: “I love Tommy so much and I love our family so much that I’m willing to ride the wave.

“And that’s not something that everyone wants to do, but it’s something that I’m willing to do because I want my family.”

Not to be left out, Tommy is also getting his own show. Earlier in the year, the BBC announced a new “candid, access all areas” documentary series about the life of Tommy.

Tommy: The Good, The Bad, The Fury will see the professional boxer return to the ring and has promised to take viewers into “every aspect of his life”.

Teasing the series, the BBC said: “Just a year ago Tommy Fury seemed to have it all – victory over his biggest adversary Jake Paul, love with Molly-Mae and a beautiful baby daughter, Bambi. But in his last fight he damaged his hand and, unable to train, his life span out of control.”

The documentary filmed Tommy as he trained for a fight after a year away from the sport, featuring unprecedented access to the Love Island star and his inner circle.

Tommy said: “A lot of people see me in the ring, they see me on social media, but they don’t see ME – the person behind all of that.

“I’m excited for everyone to finally be able to see what goes on behind the scenes, how the big fights are made, all the ups and downs as well as a glimpse into my private life.”

‘Riveting’ Netflix series lands 100% Rotten Tomatoes score as fans say it’s ‘a must watch’

Netflix viewers are divided after binging the gripping new series that was given a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score

A new Netflix docuseries, that currently holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, has been rocketing up the streaming platform ladder – and fans have two things to say about it.

The binge worthy series American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden has proved to be popular with viewers, especially those who had already watched its sister series American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing.

It delves into the counterterrorism efforts in the US following the 9/11 attacks, including the manhunt and capture of Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the terrorist attack.

The three-part series has been built using real life footage from the archives while talking to government officials who were in charge of decision making at that time.

By using real-life footage, directors Daniel Sivan and Mor Loushy were hoping to create an immersive series, taking viewers on a journey as they witness officials learning an attack on America iss about to happen as they attempt to find the perpetrator.

The way in which intelligence is uncovered throughout the series leads viewers to make up their own minds as to what they would do if they ever faced in the situation.

American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden
American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden is now avialble to stream on Netflix (Image: Netflix)

Speaking to Netflix Tudum, the directors commented: “For us, the best way to understand history is to truly experience it. Being thrown into the driver’s seat after the worst attack in American history would rattle anyone, even these brave men and women who had devoted their lives to protecting Americans by assessing geopolitical threats and sounding alarms that were often ignored.”

They added: “But the intelligence analysts didn’t have time to grieve or reflect. They had a mission at hand: to figure out who did this and stop them before the next attack.

American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden
Netflix fans raise one important issue

“American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden does not tell the story of the United States and the War on Terror,” stated Daniel and Mor. It tells the story of the people tasked to find the world’s most wanted terrorist and bring him to justice. It [was] a hunt that changed their lives, America, and the world as we know it.”

Most Netflix viewers have been full of praise offering up rave reviews about the miniseries on X while others have raised one important issue.

American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden
American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden is climbing up the streaming site rankings

One online user commented: “American Manhunt Osama Bin Laden was a riveting documentary series. Just 3 episodes, most of which I’ve seen bits and pieces over several documentaries/movies. But it was put together so well, especially the 3rd episode was nail biting cinema! Hard hitting! Must watch!”

A second fan agreed: “That Osama Bin Laden American Manhunt installment is soooo good. 10s to whoever produced & directed it.”

However, some viewers did note that they felt the documentary had felt one-sided, describing it as jingoistic at times. One comment read: “Watching the American manhunt for Osama bin Laden on Netflix rn, and it feels like the main point of the show is to make people sympathise with the CIA and the intelligence officers for their years-long intelligence failure. It’s an overkill at this point.”

Another shared the same sentiment, commenting: “Netflix has released American Manhunt Osama Bin Laden which seems to feature the “heroic” CIA Officers who worked in Alec Station?

“FBI & Congress blamed those clowns for actively concealing the presence of known Al Qaeda terrorists in USA before the 9/11 attacks. Not heroes. Idiots.”

Brian Johnson, known as the Liver King on TikTok, gained millions of followers by showcasing his extreme lifestyle online, which included eating testicles and adhering to nine strict rules he claimed were essential for a healthy life.

He heavily promoted the ‘ancestral’ way of living, claiming it cured his two sons of respiratory issues and allergies that frequently required hospital treatment.

Johnson insisted that living like our ancestors was the secret to his sculpted physique, denying steroid use in interviews. However, it later came to light that the fitness influencer was splashing out around $11,000 per month on performance-enhancing drugs.

He posted a public apology video admitting to his steroid use, sparking a massive public backlash and leaving fans questioning the authenticity of the star.

Despite the controversy, he still boasts a massive social media following, with an impressive six million followers on TikTok, nearly three million on Instagram, and over one million YouTube subscribers.

A new Netflix documentary delves into the controversy surrounding the Liver King and directly addresses the steroid scandal head-on. However, it fails to mention a £60,000 cosmetic surgery lie told by the star that had a big impact on fan trust, reports Surrey Live.

The Liver King left his followers baffled after he joked about having ab implants during a chat on the Full Send podcast. He later clarified on his website that the “experimental procedure” he claimed to have undergone was just a gag.

“Personally, I thought it was funny AF…. they actually believed me, which made it even funnier,” the Liver King shared on his website. “You should’ve seen the subprimal look on their faces thinking ‘AlI have to do is get implants?’ I sure as s*** never thought ‘the joke’ a.k.a the fake news would spread the way that it did. It has officially gotten out of hand… and I f****** love it!”

He continued: “Turns out millions of people believed me too, and started actually believing Liver King has ab implants. To this day, if you Google ‘Ab Implants’ I remain the poster child.”

In a bid to regain his fans’ trust, he visited plastic surgeon Dr Daniel Barrett and shared a video of the doctor examining his abs to confirm whether or not they were natural.

A TikToker who goes by the moniker Liver King faced intense backlash after he confessed to steroid use, despite having promoted a physique he claimed was achievable through an ‘ancestral’ way of living that included consuming testicles.

He amassed millions of fans by showing off his raw meat-based diet, extreme fitness regime, and adherence to traditional gender roles, while marketing his range of supplements and advocating for nine fundamental life pillars: sleep, eat, move, shield, connect, cold, sun, fight, and bond.

Johnson, who repeatedly denied he had used steroids, was forced to issue a public apology following the leak of an email revealing his $11,000 monthly spend on performance-enhancing drugs. He subsequently owned up on YouTube, saying: “Yes, I’ve done steroids, and yes, I’m on steroids.”

The polarising influencer, whose real name is Brian Johnson, is now at the centre of a brand-new Netflix documentary that launched today (May 13). The film presents interviews with Johnson himself, his family, and those who supported him as he built up his enterprise.

The documentary’s synopsis reads: “He built a supplement empire by devouring raw meat on social media. And he had the muscles to prove it. But really, how did the Liver King get so huge?”

Some of his followers may have had their trust in their fitness idol shaken after he disclosed using steroids, yet he still commands a massive audience on social media despite infrequent posts. He currently holds a whopping 6.1m TikTok followers, 2.9 million on Instagram, and has crossed the 1 million mark on YouTube, reports Surrey Live.

The documentary’s emotional climax features Johnson as he undergoes a transformation in outlook from his previously “extreme” regimen. He’s now cut out steroids and radically increased his consumption of fruits and vegetables.

In a memorable sequence, he’s shown expressing gratitude to each strawberry before consuming it.

“I was so convinced all of the carnivore stuff, well, that’s all you needed to really kick ass in life. I’m convinced now I was starving myself,” he reflects. “I guess I want the world to know that I was wrong. I got all of it wrong… There’s a lot more that I don’t know than I do know.

“An extreme approach to anything probably ain’t f****** working out. That’s probably the cautionary tale.”

The social media star has already plotted out his future venture, and is shown on camera revealing his plans for a series of 302 health and fitness retreats in a ranch-like setting.

Responses to the Netflix documentary are split so far. One disgruntled subscriber said: “Netflix, this might be rock bottom for you,” while another vented: “I hate that Netflix gave him a platform. So sick.”

Molly-Mae facing ‘trickiest time ever’ with sister Zoe as Tommy feud reignited

Molly-Mae Hague and her sister Zoe Rae have opened up on their rollercoaster relationship following Molly’s reunion with ex-fiancé Tommy Fury

Zoe Rae

Molly-Mae Hague has opened up about the “trickiest time ever” with her sister Zoe Rae. During Part 2 of Molly Mae’s Prime Video Documentary, Behind It All, the sisters talk about their growing relationship.

The second part of the show documents the reunion between Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury including the reaction of Molly-Mae’s sister Zoe Rae to her New Year’s Kiss with the boxer – and Zoe doesn’t hold back. Throughout the series, Zoe airs her concerns about Tommy and his ability to control his previous alcohol issues.

The pair have made no secret that their relationship was up and down while they were growing up, as they revealed Bambi brought them much closer together as sisters. “We did used to argue before Bambi a lot,” Zoe previously said on one of Molly’s YouTube videos.

“I found you more irritating I think, before you had Bambi,” Zoe admitted, as Molly laughed: “I do still find you irritating.”

Later on in the episode, Molly spoke about her desire to have another child, although Zoe was quick to remind her how she said she never would have had a kid with Tommy if “this was how it was going to be.”

As Molly agreed there would have to be a change, it all got to much for her as she’s seen walking off, telling her family that they were being annoying.

Later speaking about her current relationship with Zoe to the camera, Molly says: “I’d say Zoe and I have gone through the trickiest part of our relationship ever. Trying to navigate our sister relationship through mine and Tommy’s break up, and where she sits in my support system.”

Zoe hasn’t held back in voicing her opinion on Molly and Tommy’s turbulent relationship, telling the cameras she just wants her sister to make the right decisions.

Elsewhere in the series, Molly and Zoe can be heard having a heated discussion about Molly’s relationship with Tommy after Zoe admitted she didn’t feel “comfortable” not discussing Molly’s relationship.

She added: “Sisters need to be able to tell each other everything.” Before Molly fumed: “Right, then I need to be able to tell you the good, the bad and the ugly.” Zoe went on to say: “Your relationship and how you feel and how you are with Tommy is my only concern.”

“Nothing I do or say to you is going to change what you do, your opinion or how you feel towards him,” Zoe continued. “I know at some point Mol, in the next year, however long it is, there will be a time, where unfortunately, and I hate to say it – you probably will be upset again.”

Speaking to the camera, Zoe continued: “I would always, always, always, 100 percent be there for her but I do worry for my relationship with her if they were to get back together, definitely.”

However, by the end of the series, it seems Zoe is coming round to Molly and Tommy being back together – as Molly revealed Tommy feared Zoe “despised” him – which she denies.

“I’ve always said he’s a lovely person. He makes me laugh, he’s polite, he’s kind, he’s a great dad. I’m happy to move forward with Tommy if you two could be together and him treat you well,” she says.

‘Adolescence horror is my reality – what I wish I’d known before my boy never returned from party’

A new documentary on C5 – The Real Adolescence – looks at the rise in murder convictions for 12-17 year olds in the UK. We spoke to the mother of one young knife victim wanting to save lives

Nearly two years on from losing her son Mikey Roynon, mum Hayley Ryall is still in shock. Her beloved boy was just 16 when he went to a birthday party at a house in Bath, Somerset and didn’t come home.

For on June 10, 2023, the much-loved teenager was stabbed with a zombie-style knife and died from a single wound to his neck. Upwards of 70 kids had travelled to the party and Shane Cunningham, 16, was later detained for life for Mikey’s murder with his two friends, Leo Knight and Cartel Bushnell, also 16, jailed for manslaughter.

Mikey didn’t know the trio, who were pictured in court travelling from Wiltshire to Bath with what appeared to be sharp objects visible underneath their clothing. “I miss everything about him,” said Hayley. “I miss doing his washing, I even miss telling him off for being late.

“I miss the mess, I miss cooking for him, I miss that terribly. I miss the noise in the house. I miss Christmas because we don’t have that anymore, I miss birthdays, I miss everything.”

Hayley was working in Birmingham at the time of her son’s death and remembers looking at her phone to see 37 missed calls before one of Mikey’s friends got through to her – and her world changed forever. “Every day I wake up in the morning and I still feel in shock,” she said.

“People say time heals but it doesn’t get easier. I have a big wall up where I feel like if I talk about Mikey and go into his bedroom, I can feel him around me and he’s still here.”

Hayley described her son as “completely fearless” and “a lot of fun”. “He liked playing lots of jokes on me,” she smiled. “He was always excited, he was happy. He told me he loved me about 30 times a day. That was the last thing he said to me: ‘Love you Mum’.”

A district manager for Slimming World, the bereaved mother is appearing in tonight’s C5 documentary The Real Adolescence: Our Killer Kids, which explores the rise in murder convictions for 12-17 year olds in the UK, focusing on the experiences of families affected by these crimes. The hit Netflix four-part series that inspired the show’s name, Adolescence, recently attracted more than 24 million viewers.

“I thought it was very very good, i just felt like there could have been more towards the victim’s family,” said Hayley of the drama, which stars Stephen Graham as the father of a teenager accused of murder. “It was all about the boy that did it and his family but it didn’t show the devastation that causes to the community around that.”

The real life statistics are harrowing, with the number of children convicted of murder between 2016 and 2024 rising by more than 300 per cent. Information published by the Office for National Statistics earlier this year found teenage homicide victims in England and Wales were far more likely to have been stabbed to death than any other group – 83 per cent were killed with a sharp instrument.

Zombie-style knives and machetes, including the one that was used to kill Mikey, are defined as weapons with blades over eight inches in length, normally with a serrated cutting edge. Last year, they were banned in England and Wales.

Mum Hayley had thought knife crime was “something that happened in London, in big major cities, not where we live” before it affected her own family in devastating fashion. “I didn’t think you could go to a 16th birthday and have this happen,” she said. “The reason I’m speaking in the documentary is because I wish I’d known more two years ago – if speaking out saves one person’s life it’s worth it.

“If it gets the message out to stop one young person carrying a knife, it’s worth it. We need to stop the epidemic of knife crime.”

“We have to change how the next generation – it can’t keep getting worse,” Hayley added. “It is important because kids are killing kids.”

The TV show Adolescence explores how technology, particularly social media, influences the lives of young people. It explores toxic masculinity and online abuse and takes a wider look at the intense pressures faced by boys in Britain today.

“These kids have to deal with at such a young age with technology – it’s not the real world,” said Hayley. “We need to be checking in and asking ‘are you ok?’.”

In May last year, Mikey’s murderer Cunningham was ordered to serve a life sentence, with a minimum of 16 years behind bars, at Bristol Crown Court. His friend Bushnell was detained for nine years and Knight for nine years and six months.

Knight was convinced of manslaughter and jailed for nine years and six months

“The court case was horrific to go through, to have to sit with those boys in a room,” said Hayley. “We were not even allowed to look at them. Getting justice for Mikey, it made a tiny difference but it won’t change the fact that it ruined our lives.”

Hayley and her partner Scott, a 48-year-old insurance manager, now run the charity Mikey’s World, which has teamed up with their local police force and ambulance service to install specialist ‘bleed’ kits around Mikey’s hometown. The charity is also partnering with a technology company to offer virtual reality headsets which allow people to step into the shoes of young victims of gang-related crime.

Produced by ITN Productions, The Real Adolescence: Our Killer Kids is available to view or stream tonight on 5, from 10pm

Netflix viewers warn ‘Americans aren’t ready’ for ‘terrifying’ new UK serial killer series

The Netflix series focuses on Britain’s worst murder case

Netflix UK enthusiasts are sounding the alarm for their American counterparts, cautioning that they might not be fully braced for the platform’s upcoming major true crime docu-series.

The documentary series, set to arrive on the streaming service later this month, delves into the chilling tales of two of Britain’s most infamous serial killers, reports Surrey Live.

The programme will have a similar structure to the Conversations With a Killer series, where audiences will listen to the harrowing confessions made by the killers during police interrogations.

While the case is notorious in the UK and has etched itself into the country’s collective memory, those across the Atlantic may be unaware of the horrific extent these murderers went to satisfy their perverse and sadistic urges.

Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story is slated to hit Netflix on May 14, with the three-part series chronicling the horrific acts perpetrated by the murderous couple.

Sky is giving away a free Netflix subscription with its new Sky Stream TV bundles, including the £15 Essential TV plan.

This lets members watch live and on-demand TV content without a satellite dish or aerial and includes hit shows like The Last of Us and Black Mirror.

Following the release of a trailer by Netflix, viewers flocked to YouTube’s comments section to express their thoughts, with one user writing: “Oh dear the Americans aren’t ready for this.”

Another from the UK warned: “I’m from [the UK] and Fred and rose west what they did is beyond terrifying and worse than any other horror film, like beyond dark, be warned [sic].”

A second chimed in: “This is the kind of horrific story that will stick with you. Still so surprised not too many people know about it, especially in America.”

Meanwhile, a third shared their own unsettling experience: “I’ve seen the doc about Rose, only. I don’t think a crime documentary has scared me so much.”

One commenter posted: “A lot of people don’t seem to know about these two, at least outside the UK. It’s terrifying.”

The mention of Fred and Rose West sent a chill down the spines of many who were previously unfamiliar with the case.

Underneath, one user hesitantly inquired: “Do you think they were worse than Jeffrey Dahmer?”.

Other responses were laced with unease; “Ok I’m scared now” and “that bad? [sic]” reflected a growing sense of discomfort.

One cautious individual commented: “Thank you I caught this comment before watching and I think that’s for the best.”

However, a user from the southern United States chimed in with a contrasting perspective: “Im southern US…..have studied this case. You’re right….we are NOT ready! Imma watch though [sic].”

The Wests’ crimes still elicit a morbid fascination, given their grotesque nature and the couple’s unnerving ability to evade capture for years.

It wasn’t until police received an anonymous tip about a rape victim that their atrocities finally came to light.

A seemingly innocuous family joke led police to investigate further, only for the West children to reveal their sister Heather West’s alleged presence ‘under the patio’, setting in motion a disturbing series of discoveries.

As a result of their gruesome crimes, 25 Cromwell Street infamously earned the press’s ‘House of Horrors’ nickname, immortalising the infamous address in British crime history.

Al Jazeera wins two Peabody Awards for documentaries on Gaza war carnage | Gaza News

Fault Lines wins in News & Documentary category while Close Up wins in Interactive & Immersive category.

Al Jazeera Media Network has been honoured with two prestigious Peabody Awards, one of the most esteemed accolades in broadcast storytelling.

The awards recognise the Al Jazeera English Fault Lines documentary The Night Won’t End in the News & Documentary category, and the Al Jazeera English Digital film One Day in Gaza from the series Close Up, in the Interactive & Immersive category.

The 85th annual Peabody award winners were announced on May 1, 2025, in advance of its annual ceremony in Los Angeles on June 1, 2025.

The awards honour intelligent, powerful and moving stories told in broadcast and digital media.

Al Jazeera English’s Fault Lines documentary The Night Won’t End uncovers the tragic human cost of war. It depicts the realities of the unrelenting Israeli bombing campaign on Gaza, the unsafe “safe zones,” and arbitrary executions through the eyes of three families during the initial 15 months of the war.

The film investigates the death of five-year-old Hind Rajab, who was waiting to be rescued from a car where her family members had already been shot dead. Two medics dispatched to rescue her were also killed, as verified by a forensic watchdog agency.

Laila Al-Arian, executive producer of Fault Lines, stated, “No single piece can fully capture the scale of the atrocities in Gaza, but we aimed through investigative journalism and on-the-ground storytelling to offer a glimpse of what life has been like. We are honoured by this recognition because it helps bring more attention to a continuing story the world needs to see. Though we filmed this over a year ago, the horrors we documented remain a daily reality for more than 2 million Palestinians in Gaza.”

To date, The Night Won’t End has garnered multiple awards, including in the coveted International Current Affairs category at the Royal Television Society Awards in the United Kingdom, the Overseas Press Club prize for best TV, video or documentary about international affairs, and the long-form award from the Centre for Information Resilience Open-Source Film Awards.

The One Day in Gaza film from the series Close Up is a compilation of videos recorded by 10 individuals in Gaza, who were asked to document moments throughout their day, thereby helping viewers understand the immense hardships and constant dangers faced by Palestinians living under the constant bombardment in Gaza.

Juan Carlos Van Meek, director of digital innovation and programming, expressed his gratitude for awarding the team the Peabody Award, stating, “I am immensely proud of our team’s relentless efforts in amplifying the humanity of Palestinians living in Gaza under constant bombardment. Through the brave voices of people on the ground, we have captivated millions of viewers and helped sustain global attention on the ongoing genocide, ensuring their stories are not forgotten.”

The recognition of these documentaries underscores Al Jazeera’s commitment to highlighting the profound human experiences amid conflict.

As the situation in Gaza continues to unfold, The Network remains dedicated to shedding light on the stories that matter, ensuring that the voices of those affected are heard on a global platform.

Our Yorkshire Farm’s Amanda Owen admits seeing ‘red mist’ over ex-husband’s latest move

Amanda Owen lifts the lid on the painful reality of working with her ex-husband Clive and the moment she ‘felt the tears coming’ while they filmed their latest series

Amanda Owen is shepherding nine children, a herd of pregnant ewes and three unruly goats, all while overseeing a complex renovation and being mansplained to by her ex-husband Clive. On top of that, one of the goats has eaten her quad bike keys, there are several stalks of hay in her tousled brunette bun and she’s down to her crop top because of a spillage. However, with her sharp cheekbones and washboard abs, the Yorkshire Shepherdess still looks impossibly glam.

“It takes me about five minutes to wash my face and slather some moisturiser,” protests Amanda, 50, who says long-lasting make-up is her secret. “Then l put some mascara on, and I will use some irremovable lipstick too. I’ve discovered that certain brands actually don’t come off for about three days even if you have a bath or a shower. Even if I’m only going to see sheep, it makes me feel better.”

Standing in her rustic kitchen wearing just leggings and a tiny crop top, Amanda looks like she’s headed to the gym, however, there are no deadlifts or bicycle crunches for her. Instead, she puts her toned figure down to “shovelling muck” and “stress”. “Definitely no core exercises,” laughs Amanda. “It’s called run ragged and shovelling muck. I filled the barrow this morning with horse muck because the kids were wanting to plant things. Wherever you are on the farm, at some point you are going to end up sweating it out, mucking somewhere out, or trying to encourage an animal to go in a direction that it really doesn’t want to go in.”

Amanda has filmed a new series of Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive And Kids, which follows farm life and the family’s joint efforts to renovate a derelict centuries-old stone barn called Anty Johns. “We’re just getting the essentials like a roof, windows and a door,” explains Amanda. “All the things that I suppose you don’t really ever think about. They’re not optional. So in a way, it is simple. And I’m limited because it’s a listed building, so there’s no option for any sort of glass ceilings or anything like that.”

Now the structure is sound, Amanda has realised she doesn’t have a vision beyond making the new house habitable. “All of a sudden the emphasis changes to actually people asking me things, which is a problem because I don’t know,” she admits.

Amanda and Clive first shot to fame when they appeared in the 2011 ITV documentary The Dales . More TV appearances followed and they debuted their own show Our Yorkshire Farm on Channel 5 in 2018. In 2022, the Amanda and Clive shockingly announced the end of their 22-year marriage. Despite the divorce, Amanda and Clive, 69, continue to make TV shows together and co-parent their children Raven, 24, Reuben, 20, Miles, 18, Edith, 16, Violet, 14, Sidney, 13, Annas, 11, and nine-year-olds Clemmie and Nancy.

Amanda reckons their latest TV outing is their best one yet, with lots of different adventures for the whole family. “You get to see the rough with the smooth on the farm,” laughs Amanda. “We aren’t The Waltons! You’ve got the scenery, you’ve got the children, you’ve got the animals… it’s got so many different elements all rolled into one. It’s like one of these home renovation projects, but Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen I ain’t! It’s got a Time Team archaeological element, and a historical Who Do You Think You Are? history element too. It’s a bit Countryfile and a bit The Osbournes!”

Making a TV show is serious business but with her animals, her children and her ex all playing a role, Amanda admits things never go to plan. “What makes it all relatable is that things don’t always go right,” she says. “Any sort of itinerary just goes to the wall. No matter how many things you knock off the list, it always gets longer. Everything escalates.”

Goats eating her keys was one such situation. “We’ve got these three goats that go everywhere and literally no rules apply,” sighs Amanda. “They go through the house, on the roof, in the trailer, in the car… it’s access all areas with the goats. They’ve got a real liking for chewing things and they have an addiction to key fobs, one of them actually ate the quad bike keys!”

However, the moment of horror actually turned to one of triumph as young Sidney came to the rescue. “It became a great learning curve,” says Amanda. “Sidney replaced the whole ignition barrel on the quad bike. I’m so proud of him.”

On camera, Amanda’s life looks idyllic and her children are frequently seen wholesomely enjoying the outdoors and helping on the farm. However, she insists her kids are no different to any others. “They love nothing more than getting online,” says Amanda. “We live in quite judgmental times where you can’t do right for doing wrong. As a parent, it’s hard.”

Amanda Owen stands proudly with the Yorkshire countryside looking green and hilly behind her

Watching the show, viewers will be struck by Amanda and Clive’s positive working relationship after their divorce. However, Amanda admits they did nearly fall out while filming the new series. “Clive starts trying to tell me how to use the internet,” says Amanda. “That was definitely tear-jerking in a painful manner, in that mansplaining way. I definitely felt the tears coming – then the red mist!”

Luckily, Amanda can saddle up her horse and gallop off along the windswept moors when it all gets too much. However, she admits it never works out how she hopes.

“I absolutely love going out on my horse,” says Amanda. “I’ve got all the gear collected over the years, nice things. But do I ever go for a ride wearing nice things with a nice-looking horse? No!

“I go in my wellies with bits of string holding the girth together and everything mismatched and somewhere en route I’ll either spot a sheep where it’s not supposed to be or a blocked drain and all of a sudden what was possibly a nice, relaxing time becomes stress!”
