‘I decided to spend my holiday money on a day out in my hometown’

What would you do if you had £338 to spend on a day out?

That’s the question Ambassador Cruises asked me, and the one I answered last month. The British cruise line’s people are so confident of the value of their sailings, and the packed schedule of events and delicious variety of food onboard, they challenged me to have as much fun during a day out in London as I would onboard.

Armed with £338 (the price of a night’s bed and board for two on an Ambassador ship), I began plotting a big day out in the English capital for my partner and myself, to put their value claims to the test, and to find out if going away on holiday is all a big waste of time and effort.

My philosophy was simple and borrowed classic present-giving wisdom: we’d plump for things we’d never normally do.

We headed to the zoo(Image: DAILY MIRROR)

First up was breakfast in The Delaunay. If you’re looking to treat yourself to one of the best breakfasts of your life, then the Covent Garden-based all-day brasserie is the place to go. The grapefruits come sliced into segments and arranged into a bursting flower shape; the fried eggs are perfectly round; and the company, well-heeled lone men, seemingly from another century, reading broadsheets. £71 well spent on delicious food and a novel experience.

Next, we wandered up to London Zoo in Regent’s Park, where entry costs £38 per adult in peak season; which, on that particularly scorching August Saturday, it certainly was. Presumably, the Dudley Dursley imitators are out in lesser force on most days, as the banging on snake vivarium glass and screaming inches from a hanging sloth was relentless.

Beyond the beautiful gorilla babies Venus and Juno, and the excellently creepy bug house complete with a golden orb spider walk-through, there was little at the zoo I can recommend unless you like feeling a bit sad about nature.

Harbouring mixed feelings, we hopped on a bus to Soho and made for Tamarind Kitchen. The small plates restaurant specialises in seriously fancy curries and silver service. It’s a whole different kettle of fish than the poppadom-stacking, waistband-stretchingly plentiful curry houses you find on most UK high streets. We’re talking more tasting bowls of delicate vegetarian curries and £5 sparkling water than a chicken coop’s worth of tikka and a Tiger beer for £10. The damage: £106.

The mighty Ambience cruise ship
The mighty Ambience cruise ship(Image: PR HANDOUT)

The highlight of the day was next on the schedule and had us slapping down our cash in a hurry and heading to the South Bank for a performance of Nye at the National Theatre. Booked a week in advance, we’d managed to bag two tickets for £38 each. Every seat in the Olivier section of the theatre is excellent, meaning we had a wonderful view of Michael Sheen as he brought the story of the NHS founder to life.

From the lofty peak, things could only go downhill, and so they did. Our night ended with a rejection metres from the front door of Ronnie Scott’s, where our hour of queuing for the non-ticketed 11 p.m. jazz live show proved in vain. Four Negronis in Bar Termini down the road provided good solace for £44.

So how does all of this compare to a cruise?

The major difference is the one-destination nature of our jaunt. The joy of a cruise is most obvious when you wake in the morning and look outside to see a new city or country there, ready to explore. Another big tick in the cruise column is the value of accommodation.

Had my partner and I swapped our flat for one of London’s cheapest hotel rooms, it would’ve cost us at least £100. More likely, £150. As my colleague Sophie Harris discovered on a recent Ambassador sailing on Ambience from London Tilbury to the Netherlands, the junior suites are “gorgeous” and replete with a large dressing area and a balcony.

“The space was super comfortable and cosy, and the outdoor area was perfect for relaxing, breathing in the fresh sea air and watching the waves. We were also treated to fresh canapés every day, fresh fruit and a stocked mini fridge,” Sophie wrote.

Which brings us on to the consumables. Even with £338 bolstering your wallet, drinks in London do not feel cheap. Or certainly not as cheap as they do when ordered on an all-inclusive cruise package, whatever the total is once all is said and done. Food-wise, Ambience ’s Buckingham Restaurant and its 80s-themed night complete with prawn cocktail, chicken Kiev and baked Alaska won major praise from Sophie.

But it’s hard to imagine that the variety and quality of any cruise kitchen could match that on offer in the UK’s major towns and cities. Similarly, London theatres such as the National, Young Vic and Almeida are much more tempting than anything I’ve watched on a cruise ship.

That said, if you’re a Bucks Fizz or Fleetwood Mac fan, Ambassador’s cover shows will likely win your heart. “The live music and shows onboard Ambience were a highlight of my stay, and due to it being an 80s cruise, the themed evening entertainment was incredible,” Sarah concluded.

At the end of it all, I’d say honours are pretty even. But, if you’ve recently had your fill of cruising or a package break, why not try a “holiday at home”? It’s a great way to unearth new local delights and see a new side of where you live.

Lewis Crocker vs Paddy Donovan 2 LIVE RESULTS: Reaction as brutal rematch is decided on SPLIT DECISION

Crocker vs Donovan R8

Lewis Crocker has stunned Belfast with his gameplan and conviction

Crocker vs Donovan R7

Lewis Crocker has put on a masterclass in Belfast.

Two knockdowns to the good after a clinic in counter punching.

Six months ago, Donovan bossed the original bout but he lost on a DQ.

Crocker entered the rematch the underdog, but he’s showing bark and bite and brain and brawn.

Crocker vs Donovan R7

Donovan has now suffered two knockdowns and counts.

But trainer Billy Nelson now tells him to flip the tactics and get on the front foot.

The counter-punching has worked so well. Will the 180 be a mistake?

Crocker vs Donovan R6

Donovan now needs knockdowns or this will slip away.

But that could play right into counter-punching Crocker’s heavy hands.

Two 10-8 rounds must have given Crocker the lead and Donovan needs to match those scores.

Donovan down R5!

Donovan is trying to land combinations now, to take the upperhand and block Crocker counters.

Just when Donovan looks like banking another session, he is smashed again and folds.

Donovan gets back to his corner after the count and tells Andy Lee: “I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT HAPPENED”

Another 10-8 round to Crocker

Crocker vs Donovan R4

Crocker buzzed by a lazer of a left-hand uppercut but his legs stay solid.

Then he spins it by smashing Donovan back and wobbling him.

Donovan is clawing back from that early knock down and he is still struggling to adapt to Crocker’s shock counter-punch tactics.

How Man City v Man Utd will be decided by ‘goalkeeper trap’ battle – and will it be Lammens or Bayindir for Red Devils?

PREMIER LEAGUE football is back after another dreary international break.

And the highlight of this weekend’s action is undoubtedly the mouthwatering Manchester derby on Sunday.

Senne Lammens signing a Manchester United contract.

City vs United is one of the top fixtures of the season.

But there could be some huge changes for both sides, with Pep Guardiola and Ruben Amorim each signing a new goalkeeper on deadline day.

Will Gianluigi Donnarumma and Senne Lammens get their first taste of English football action in one of world football’s biggest games?

SunSport’s tactical expert Dean Scoggins dives into another brilliant analysis…

NEW GOALKEEPER ‘TRAP’ BATTLE

I reckon both teams will be nervous about potential debuts for their goalies! But United fans should be the most nervous about what decision gets made.

City don’t cross it very much so that’s one thing in favour of sticking with Altay Bayindir over Senne Lammens.

Another thing in his favour is United have learned to play out with him, and Amorim may decide to leave Lammens out.

With Gianluigi Donnarumma, City don’t have to worry about mistakes, he will make stacks of saves, he’s absolutely class.

But what they should be nervous about is how they’re going to cope with playing out.

Pep’s hardly going to stop playing out from the back, but Donnarumma is perceived to not be great with his feet, which could give James Trafford a chance.

Andre Onana is mobbed and dances with Trabzonspor fans as Man Utd flop lands in Turkey to end Old Trafford nightmare

Tactically, United will play 3-4-3 and when they’re pressing from the front, they almost slot into a 4-4-2 diamond.

We’ll expect City to drop the centre-backs in and push the full-backs on. You’d then think the goalie plays over the top.

But United will put real pressure on then. The striker will drop on City’s No6 to stop him getting the ball.

They will then press either side with curved runs to block off Donnarumma’s channels.

United want to set a trap by leaving a City player free —  they want Donnarumma to play to him.

Altay Bayındır's pass map: 67 successful, 33 unsuccessful (67% accuracy).

Altay Bayindir’s pass success means he could get the nod ahead of Lammens

10

United will look to trap Donnarumma into making risky passes with a sneaky set-up

When he hits it, United are going to shuffle across. It’s a trigger for a press. And City fans will be very nervous in that playing-out scenario.

United should be willing to take that risk to make Donnarumma play those passes, and that could mean a lot of joy.

As for Lammens, he looks really confident on the ball. He puts his foot on the ball to bait people in.

But with City’s set-up, they leave United’s 8’s for a trap. That could see them take advantage of United playing out with a new inexperienced goalie.

I’m a bit nervous if Lammens goes straight in, it takes time on the training ground to prepare these things.

They’ve been very brave with Bayindir so far. Lammens is very confident on the ball but it takes time to get used to set-ups in the Premier League.

WHAT SYSTEM WILL PEP USE?

We’ve seen 4-4-2, 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 so far. That’s with 11 injuries.

In attack they want to be in a 3-2-5 shape. But what they’ve done quite a lot this season, not successfully, is get into a 2-3-5 shape with a full-back moving in.

But up against Bryan Mbeumo, and with injuries, I’d be nervous about that shape.

Nathan Ake could come in for a back three, but I think Bernardo Silva will be the key man in this game with his interchanging.

City will look to squeeze up with three at the back

10

This could open the door for United to counter with four attackers

Tottenham and Brighton had loads of joy against City by leaving four up top.

I think City will use Matheus Nunes as a generic right-back with two in midfield like a 4-2-4 shape.

As for United, I think Amad Diallo will play on the left of attack, with Noussair Mazraoui at right wing-back.

There’s a question mark over midfield, is it two or one at the base? It depends on injuries.

HOW WILL MAN UTD ATTACK?

It’s a 3-5-2, but will Amorim start Sesko? United have been the most direct team in the league this season.

They’ve had the most direct chances but haven’t scored one yet.

Mbeumo’s gone close so that’s what they’re going to do.

I think Sesko has to play just for his physicality. Spurs used Richarlison to great effect against City.

If Cunha isn’t fit, you don’t want Mbeumo moved from the right. Don’t make two changes for the sake of one.

If Mount is out too, does Diallo go to the left? You’ve got other options at wing-back.

Diallo turned the game on its head last season and made a fool of Matheus Nunes so can do that job.

Man Utd love having possession on the left… but they look to break on the right
Premier League 2025-2026: Most direct attacks by team.

10

They are the most direct team in the Prem but are yet to score from an attack

United will form diamonds and triangles all over the pitch. It gives them options on either side.

But they’ve particularly liked overloading the left side this season.

That leaves Mbeumo to isolate his defender, with the ball going in behind for him to attack the space.

City have been susceptible to balls over the top and have conceded twice from them so far.

United are having more of the ball on the left, but attacking more on the right. That will be the move they want to get.

That’s something for United fans to lick their lips over in attack.

Long passes are back in fashion. City have been more direct and United are now doing it too.

I fancy United to get some joy in this.

DO RODRI AND NICO BOTH PLAY?

I think they should in this game. Reijnders was outstanding against Wolves but got overrun by Spurs physically and caught out against Brighton.

Because City get greedy with position, a midfielder move forward and the other has a lot of space to cover.

Rodri can’t cover that space, especially after his injury.

I think both Rodri and Nico Gonzalez should play as the two, with Bernardo Silva the key on the right as the most flexible player.

Illustration of Manchester City vs Manchester United soccer formations.

10

City would be wise to start both Rodri and Nico Gonzalez
Illustration of Manchester City and Manchester United football formations.

10

They can’t afford to leave space in the middle of the park with their high line

He can come inside and bring Nunes forward, forcing Dorgu back.

In the direct way of playing and how open they’ve been, it should be a two.

Also, Pep Ljinders. City are pressing more with him as assistant.

It leaves space open for balls over the top, while City have also been playing a very high line.

It’s too much space so two are needed to make it solid. Trust your attackers to break down United.

If they are struggling, take over Nico and bring on a winger. But start with a solid base.

Israel’s Netanyahu has decided on full occupation of Gaza, reports say | Gaza News

Netanyahu’s war cabinet set to approve military operations across entire enclave, according to Israeli media.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to announce plans to fully occupy the Gaza Strip, Israeli media have reported.

Netanyahu’s decision will see the Israeli military expand its operations across the entire enclave, including areas where Hamas’s captives are being held, i24NEWS, The Jerusalem Post, Channel 12 and Ynet reported on Monday.

“The decision has been made,” Amit Sega, chief political analyst with Channel 12, quoted an unnamed senior official in Netanyahu’s office as saying.

“Hamas won’t release more hostages without total surrender, and we won’t surrender. If we don’t act now, the hostages will starve to death and Gaza will remain under Hamas’s control.”

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the reported plans and called on the international community to “intervene urgently to prevent their implementation, whether they are a form of pressure, trial balloons to gauge international reactions, or genuinely serious”.

Netanyahu’s office did not immediately respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.

The reports come as Netanyahu is set to convene his war cabinet on Tuesday to discuss the next steps for Israel’s military in Gaza as its war in the besieged enclave nears the two-year mark.

Netanyahu is facing growing international pressure to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza and halt the war amid mounting Palestinian deaths due to malnutrition and Israeli attacks.

At least 74 Palestinians, including 36 aid seekers, were killed in Israeli attacks on Monday, according to medical sources in Gaza.

The Israeli leader is also facing mounting domestic pressure to secure the release of Hamas’s remaining captives in Gaza, following the release of footage of detainees Rom Braslavski and Evyatar David appearing emaciated.

Netanyahu on Monday doubled down on his war goals, including eliminating Hamas and securing the release of the remaining captives.

“We must continue to stand together and fight together to achieve all our war objectives: the defeat of the enemy, the release of our hostages, and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel,” Netanyahu said at the start of a regular cabinet meeting on Monday.

Senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan on Monday accused the United States and other Western countries of turning a blind eye to Israeli atrocities, and said that Netanyahu’s government bore “full responsibility” for the lives of the captives “due to its stubbornness, arrogance, and evasion of reaching a ceasefire agreement, and the escalation of the war of extermination and starvation against our people”.

More than 60,930 Palestinians, including at least 18,430 children, have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, according to Gaza health authorities.

Forty-nine captives, including 27 who are believed to be dead, are still being held by Hamas, according to Israeli authorities.

Why Shaquille O’Neal decided to join the Reebok executive team

Shaquille O’Neal was a dominant force in the NBA, a 7-foot-1 gentle giant who shattered boards, racked up four titles and left an indelible mark as one of the best centers in basketball history. But since his retirement in 2011, Shaq has shown that his impact goes far beyond sports.

Now, in the business world, from offices and boardrooms, Shaq is focused on remaining the most dominant ever.

Beyond his impressive height, one of O’Neal’s most distinguishing traits is his sense of humor. In the “Power Moves with Shaquille O’Neal” Netflix series, which premiered on June 4, he acknowledges that his mindset is “80% humor and 20% seriousness” when it comes to running his businesses. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t take his responsibilities seriously. In fact, he believes that some people tried to exploit his outgoing nature when he first started his business ventures.

“Yes, a lot of people try to take advantage and that just drives me to do more things,” O’Neal told L.A. Times en Español.

He is accustomed to people trying to exploit his perceived weaknesses.

“They always said, ‘With the way he shoots free throws, he’ll never win a championship.’ OK, maybe that’s true, but I’m going to dominate the game so much that free throws don’t even matter.”

He brings the same mentality to his position at Reebok, where he is president of basketball — a position he assumed in 2023 — and is leading a push to bring relevance back to a brand that once bet on him to be a star.

“When I went to Nike, they said, ‘Yeah, we wanted to give you your own sneakers, but we gave them to another guy.’ And I said, ‘Excuse me? To this guy?’ And then when I went to Reebok, they said, ‘We believe in you, we’re going to give you your own shoes,’” O’Neal recalls.

That loyalty was not forgotten. Today, 30 years after signing with Reebok as a player, O’Neal is back, not to launch retro updates of his shoes, but to make decisions, train a new generation of athletes and reshape the brand’s place in a fiercely competitive market.

Shaq didn’t join Reebok’s executive team just for nostalgia’s sake. His vision is clear: Take a chance like they took a chance on him in the 1990s.

“They took a chance on young Shaq. He took a chance on young AI [Allen Iverson]. He took a chance on young Shawn Kemp. And we turned the plan into a dominant number two. Never number one, but never number three,” O’Neal explained.

With that logic, the former player decided not to bet Reebok’s current NBA marketing budget all on one superstar.

“I wanted to go the traditional route. ‘Hey, let’s go for Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander]. Let’s go for Jaylen Brown.’ But when you talk to agents, these guys want big numbers. … You’re going to spend 85 or 90% of the budget,” O’Neal said.

His team — including his son, Shareef — convinced O’Neal to invest in emerging talent with a strong social media presence and a mindset of their own.

Case in point is WNBA Chicago Sky player Angel Reese, who signed with Reebok in 2023.

“Angel reminds me of AI. She’s going to do it her way, the way she wants to do it. She doesn’t care what anyone else says,” O’Neal said.

(Mark Terrill / Associated Press)

He sees Reese not only as a great athlete, but as an influential figure who embodies the disruptive spirit he wants to restore in the Reebok brand.

O’Neal isn’t just impressed by what he sees on the court. He’s looking for something more.

“I’m looking for someone who isn’t getting the recognition he deserves,” he said. “We live in a world where, once they get noticed by one or two guys, they stick with them forever.”

He said he was underestimated in his early days. Despite being selected with the first pick in the 1992 draft and making an immediate impact with the Orlando Magic, he said during early career business meetings “they never looked at me. They always looked at my manager. It was like, ‘Do you think he understands business?’”

That prompted him to study business administration and management and get serious about his financial education.

“I just thought, ‘Let me get a degree … so you know I understand that I’m in charge of my own destiny,’” O’Neal said.

Now, as president of Reebok basketball, he also values athletes’ family ties, their work ethic, their environment and their desire to represent something bigger than themselves.

“I like the people, the moms, the dads, the coaches. People want to be represented in a certain way,” O’Neal said.

He doesn’t presume to have all the answers. He admits he’s had to adapt and learn.

“It’s just about challenges. I’ve always been one to step up to meet them. … I had to learn a lot, learn about this business,” he said.

To appeal to the broadest group of customers, he has relied on a close circle of advisors that includes his son, Shareef.

“I had to bring in my son to help me identify with the crazy Generation Z, because they do what they want. They follow their own path. They have their own rules,” O’Neal said.

While still a strong, determined figure, O’Neal has learned to accept feedback from others.

“I don’t think my best quality is listening,” he admits. But in his new role, he’s had to let go of some of his old-school style and trust his team.

O’Neal was one of the most dominant players the NBA has ever seen. Now he’s one of the most successful athletes in the business world. His investment portfolio includes franchises of businesses such as Papa John’s, Five Guys, 24 Hour Fitness and his own line of products and apparel. He also holds commercial endorsement contracts with brands such as Icy Hot, The General insurance and Carnival Cruises, among others.

But his business success has not been linear.

“On the road to success, there are many failures and you simply have to try to have more successes than failures,” he said.

His secret has been to surround himself with skilled people.

“I have great teammates,” O’Neal said. “My friend wins a championship by herself. It’s called delegation.”

Shaq has turned his image into a global brand, but he insists the key has been staying true to his values. It all revolves around his family.

“I am who you think I am. I realized I couldn’t have done any of this without my family and their blessings,” he says.

He said his faith and personal values help him manage the impact of his success.

“I said it about seven years ago, never call me famous,” O’Neal said. “Celebrities are jerks. I just want to be a normal person. I’m a respectful person. I love kids. I love the elderly. I love helping those in need. I love making people smile. So the answer to the question of how I keep my feet on the ground, you know exactly how I do it: Salaam-alaikum [Peace be upon you], brother.”

Long before he joined he executive team, O’Neal played a major role in Reebok’s success. In the early 1990s, while Nike and Adidas were building giant empires, Reebok bet on O’Neal and Iverson, and managed to position itself as a serious alternative, especially among urban youth. But over time, the brand lost ground.

Now, with O’Neal leading the renaissance of its basketball division, Reebok wants to regain that lost space. It doesn’t intend to compete directly with Nike or Adidas for big stars, but to create an ecosystem of its own.

“It’s not about a gamble. It’s about making the right decision,” O’Neal said.

O’Neal has been many things: NBA champion, most valuable player, All-Star, entrepreneur, commentator, DJ, actor, honorary police officer, philanthropist. But perhaps his most powerful facet is that of a man who builds bridges, pushes others and constantly reinvents himself.

This new movement, he says, is strategic and personal. He is enjoying a reunion with the brand that believed in him and an opportunity to return the favor by helping Reebok connect with customers.
