Elton John has revealed what he’d tell his younger self if he could go back in time in a tell-all interview with Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway for Smooth Radio

Singer Elton John has revealed what he’d tell his younger self if he could go back in time. The admission came in a sit down interview with Good Morning Britain‘s Kate Garraway for Smooth Radio.

The 78-year-old is back with new music today, releasing collaborative album Who Believes In Angels? with Brandi Carlisle. The 10-track album includes eight songs with the duo together, as well as a solo song from each artist. “This is probably the freshest album I’ve done since the 70s,” Elton told Kate in a snippet shown on GMB this morning.

“I wanted a challenge and it was challenging, but it worked out really well,” he said. Getting deeper in the interview, Kate proceeded to ask Elton what advice he would give his younger self.

“Never take drugs,” he candidly said. “I took drugs, it took me down and then when I recovered I had to go through that journey to become the person I am.”

He further continued: “But also admit that you’re really lucky to be able to have music in your life. Music has been with me my entire life. It’s been with me when I’ve been up, been down, depressed but I still went out there and made music and toured. It saved me, it nearly destroyed me but it saved me.”

The singer has been open about his battles with drugs and alcohol in the past and is now over three decades clean. In 2015, Elton took to Instagram to announce 25 years of sobriety with a picture of a cake topped by the number 25 and the phrase “One day at a time.”

His battle with addiction was documented in the 2019 musical biopic Rocketman and in the same year, the singer also published his autobiography Me, Elton in which he detailed his past drug problems.

Elton took cocaine for the first time in in 1974 and said he became hooked on the euphoric feeling that the Class A drug gave him.

Writing about how his drug addiction took over his life, the star revealed: “That was the problem. Because I was doing coke, I wasn’t a rational human being anymore.

“You become unreasonable and irresponsible, self-obsessed, a law unto yourself. It’s your way or the highway. It’s a horrible drug.”

After a 20 year battle with both alcohol and drugs, Elton quit them both for good in 1990.
