A Labour peer has called on Rishi Sunak and Michael Gove to root out racism in their party after comments by a Tory donor about Diane Abbott.

Baroness Chakrabarti said her friend was “anxious and upset” about Frank Hester claiming the MP made him “want to hate all black women” in comments from 2019.

The former shadow attorney general told BBC political editor Chris Mason that hate was “beginning to fill our politics” in a way not seen since the 1970s.
