Posting on social media, Caitlyn Matheny, a single mother from the US, explained that she creates content for social media, which in turn earns her a hefty sum every month.
Opening up about the side hustle, Caitlyn said: “If you wanna make extra money from your phone, I got you.
“And no, this is not a scheme or a scam or anything.
“I’ve been making an extra $2,000 [£1,586] a month from home, literally using my phone and creating content.

“And it’s with affiliate marketing.”
Affiliate marketing is the process by which an affiliate earns a commission for marketing another person’s or company’s products.
The affiliate simply searches for a product they enjoy, then promotes that product and earns a piece of the profit from each sale they make.
The content creator then continued: “I’m a single mum, I don’t have childcare for my baby, so I’m home with him most of the day, and I was really trying to scramble, especially with this economy, trying to figure out how I can make extra money, just to afford to live for me and him.
“And obviously I couldn’t get another job, because even the remote jobs are really demanding on your time and being home with my seven-month-old baby, that was just not gonna work.
“So that’s when I really started looking into affiliate marketing. I’ve been taking it really seriously now for the past three to four months and I’m averaging an extra $1,500 [£1,190] to $2,000 [£1,586] now – and that’s just a couple of months in.”
For those wanting to get started, Caitlyn shared where to begin, as she advised: “A lot of brands do affiliate marketing with creators who have even less than 2,000 followers.
“Obviously, picking a good content strategy is gonna help grow your page more, which is gonna bring more people to your page, which is gonna allow more people to buy the products that you’re promoting.
“There’s so much that goes into it though, and you wanna make sure you’re being ethical with it as well.
“I really wanna make a series on this, but I will give you the first step.

“Take products that you use every day and search those brands and see if they either A, have an affiliate marketing program that you can apply for on their website or B, find out who their marketing manager is, get their email and email them a pitch.
“Those two ways are how I have secured several different brand deals and this was even before I had any type of followers.
“You really don’t have to have a lot of followers to do affiliate marketing.
“Actually, a lot of brands prefer to work with smaller creators because the influence is there.
“I know a lot of my audience are single mothers or single parents in general, and it’s really hard for us to be able to work and make money and have a career when we’re taking care of our kids all day.
“So if you’re in need of extra money, I really would like to start posting a little bit more about what I’m doing.”
What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a marketing arrangement in which affiliates receive a commission for each visit, signup or sale they generate for a merchant.
This arrangement is a performance-based marketing system that allows businesses to outsource part of the sales process.
A company compensates third-party publishers (affiliates or employees) to generate traffic and the commission fee incentivises them to find ways to promote the company.
The affiliate gets a unique link (an “affiliate link”) from which clicks can be tracked — typically using cookies. The cookie then tracks the user to see if they make a purchase.
If purchases are made within an allotted time, the affiliate will earn a commission.
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @caitmatheny, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly amassed 34,000 views.
Social media users were impressed with Caitlyn’s clip and many were eager to know more about how she makes her money, which many took to the comments to express.
