Overnight round-up from Qatar

England boss Gareth Southgate praised matchwinners Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden on a “very special night” as the recalled duo sent Wales home and set up a last-16 tie with Senegal.

Rashford’s scintillating double and Foden’s simple strike turned England’s domination into a second-half rout as they topped their group.

Southgate said: “We controlled the game in the first half but didn’t create enough chances.

“We wanted a bit more thrust and once we got the first two goals we knew their spirit had perhaps gone.”

Southgate believes attackers Rashford and Foden profited once they swapped flanks after the interval, enabling them to cut inside.

Meanwhile, 33-year-old Gareth Bale vowed to carry on for Wales – as long as he’s wanted.

Christian Pulisic had to watch the nervy climax of the USA’s 1-0 victory with Iran from a hospital bed after injuring himself netting the winner.

The Chelsea winger collided with Iranian keeper Alireza Beiranvand.

Pulisic posted on social media: “So proud of my guys. I’ll be ready for Saturday (against Holland), don’t worry.”

The Dutch confirmed their easy qualification with a 2-0 defeat of hosts Qatar.

And Senegal beat Ecuador 2-1 in that group’s ‘shootout’.

Two more groups conclude today – with France already through and the other seven teams all in genuine contention.

In Group C, leaders Poland host second-placed Argentina and Saudi Arabia meet Mexico.

Group D sees Australia facing Denmark and bottom side Tunisia also hopeful, as they face a French team who could rest top players.
