DEONTAY WILDER has welcomed a fight with Jake Paul – in a bid to dish out a “reality check”.

Wilder has become the latest champion of the past linked with a bout against YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul.

And while it so far remains just another possibility on the table – Wilder is ready to come to the table for that lucrative conversation.

He told Brian Mazique: “Nothing has been presented to us, at the moment it’s not real, but if it came my way of course I’m 100 per cent taking it.

“He’s been doing his thing in the business although it’s not the traditional way, it’s not the logic way of how a fighter comes up or how he gains stardom and fame and fortune.

“Unfortunately, it’s a more brutal road than that. Some of these guys never, ever in their lifetime see $50,000, let alone $100,000 or $1million or $2million.

“It just doesn’t go like that. That module of how it is, it’s not like that. But it’s the wave of what young people are looking to or what they like.

“Unfortunately, people try and go off the vote of popularity. What’s going on, what’s popular, what can make them money.

“Money makes the world go round and everybody is trying to make that dollar – no matter what skill you’ve got if you can generate a crowd that generates to asses in seats that generates money.

“So all of this is a cycle that’s used and here it is you’ve got a guy that’s been doing good in generating money and putting asses in seats although he’s selective in how he fights and who he fights, I would say.”

Paul moved up to heavyweight in November when Mike Tyson controversially made a comeback aged 58.

And despite the scrutiny surrounding the showdown – over 100 MILLION tuned in on Netflix to watch Tyson lose over eight shorter rounds of two minutes.

Paul, 28, then returned in June to beat ex-middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 39, over ten rounds to earn himself a No14 cruiserweight rank in the WBA.

The American – whose only loss in 13 fights came to Tommy Fury in 2023 – soon after entered shock talks to fight Anthony Joshua.

And two-time heavyweight champ AJ looked to be nearing a deal to face Paul next year.

But talks have since stalled after Paul announced a November 14 exhibition against lightweight champ Gervonta Davis, 30, who is FIVE STONE lighter.

Paul’s camp claim they still intend to fight Joshua, 35, in 2026 with the Brit legend  sidelined since his September 2024 loss to Daniel Dubois, 27.

But Wilder, 39, has now thrown his name into the mix to fight Paul in an attempt to teach the prankster-gone-prizefighter a lesson.

He added: “That’s exactly how I would approach it. It would be a big reality check.

“That would be the title of the show ‘Reality Check’. At least for me.”

Wilder suffered consecutive losses – to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang – before returning to victory against little-known Tyrrell Herndon in June.

And he is now in talks to fight ex-UFC champion Francis Ngannou – who lost his two boxing bouts to Tyson Fury and AJ.

Wilder has now stopped 43 opponents in 44 wins, many in dramatic fashion.

But since his trilogy with Briton Fury – a brutal, history-making rivalry that saw him floored five times and stopped twice – Wilder has never quite looked the same.

Those defeats appeared to drain not just his record but his aura, confidence, and perhaps his trust in the sport.

In the aftermath, Wilder made unsubstantiated claims of loaded gloves, spiked water and betrayal from within his team, drawing ridicule and alienating some fans.

A long-rumoured bout with Anthony Joshua seemed close in late 2023, but Wilder was soundly beaten on points by New Zealand’s Joseph Parker in Saudi Arabia. It was a flat, uninspired display that derailed the Joshua fight and raised fresh doubts about Wilder’s future.

Then came the crushing fifth-round defeat to Zhang last year – a loss that, to many, looked like the end.

Wilder vanished from the spotlight. He went quiet on social media and drifted off the radar.

He insists he never planned to walk away and says he had been working with a sports psychologist to help him heal and rekindle his love for boxing.

This comeback, he says, was always part of the plan.

I get asked about Paul all the time – “Buncey, what do you make of him?”

I tell them that Paul is one of boxing’s best-promoted and best-matched fighters. He’s the sport’s greatest modern self-publicist.

He’s had just 12 fights but operates with the publicity machine of a 30-year veteran. That’s the reality.

This next one – against Mexican Chavez – is another masterstroke. Win, and Paul can truthfully say he’s beaten a former world champion. Never mind that Chavez has been unmotivated and underwhelming for years.

This is elite matchmaking, the kind Mickey Duff or Frank Warren would have admired in the 1980s. Find a guy with a belt in the past, a name the public still knows and has just enough miles on the clock. Time it right, get the win, build the brand.

In fact, smart matchmaking has always been Paul’s strategy. Even the Mike Tyson fight was cold, calculated business. It may have counted to both their records but it was just a glorious payday for Tyson, who didn’t really let his hands go and nor did Paul either. There was a degree of benevolence in that ring.

Paul upsets the purists when he fights UFC guys and then starts calling out the likes of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez or Joshua. His mouth is his crime, not his commitment to boxing. I’ve seen him in the gym – Paul trains like a world champion.

He’s raw, his footwork clunky, his technique mechanical, but his commitment is real. He trains like he’s going 15 rounds at Madison Square Garden.

As for Chavez, this could be redemption. If a motivated, fit Chavez – the kind we haven’t seen in years – shows up, he could give Paul a real fight.

And if he wins, he’ll become a folk hero for those traditionalists eager to see the Paul machine slowed down.

Wilder’s second stint was initially a salvage job after a disastrous summer of recruitment hindered predecessor Paul Heckingbottom.

Ultimately it didn’t work, but the seeds of change were sown.

Wilder – known as being a skilled planner – set about changing the plan, and despite a slow, nervy start to the transfer window due the protracted takeover of the club, put together the makings of a good squad which amassed 90 points (92 without the deduction) that remarkably wasn’t enough for automatic promotion, and ended with a defeat in the Championship play-off final.

Following that final against Sunderland three weeks ago, it’s believed a split board decided to discuss a ‘change in direction’ last week which has ultimately led to the pending departure of one of United’s most successful managers.

The delay in holding these talks over his future and the time it’s taken to resolve the situation shows a lack of respect to Wilder, in my opinion, a lack of clarity at the top of the club, and a naivety in offering him a new three-year deal in January, when it was known significant changes to the club’s methods of recruitment were coming.

The former long-reigning WBC heavyweight champion will bid to get back to winning ways on June 27 in a rebuild fight against Tyrrell Herndon.

Wilder, 39, will enter the bout on the back of four defeats in his last five outings, with three of those losses being brutal knockouts to Tyson Fury and Zhilei Zhang.

The American has looked like a shell of the fighter who struck fear into the hearts of heavyweights during his pomp, so much so that a litany of boxing icons, Fury, included, have urged him to call it a day.

During an appearance on the Pound 4 Pound podcast with former UFC champs Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo, he said: “I’d like to see poor old Deontay retire from boxing.

“When I beat Wilder, he was 44 and 0, with 43 KOs, and he KO’d the guy who went the distance with him in the rematch, so that means he knocked out every single person he ever faced. 44 people.

“Obviously, he lost the three fights to me and since that third trilogy, we took a lot of lot of years off each other’s lives.

“That war, which ended in the 11th round by knockout, that took a lot out of our tanks.

“Between me and Wilder in that trilogy there was 10 knockdowns. It takes a lot out of a fighter.

“Even when he’s come back and had a couple of fights since, he’s only a shadow of his former glory.

“The only thing left that remains the same about Deontay is his name.”

Legendary boxing coach Teddy Atlas, who used to train Mike Tyson, shares the same view as Fury.

Atlas told Slingo: “The last thing to go, George Foreman showed, is that the last thing to go with a fighter is power.

“As long as you have power, you’ve got a shot.

“But the way he’s looked, the punishment he took against Zhilei Zhang.

“Wilder took a lot of punishment in his last few fights.

“And the way he took it, how clean he got hit, and how he reacted to it, just as a human being.

“Forget trainer, promoter, anything, just as a human being, I’d be concerned about him fighting again.”

Wilder and his team are hoping a win over Herndon will kick-start an unlikely run to a world title, with head coach Malik Scott saying: “He’s still got that urge to become champion, because he’s a champion at heart.

“He’s on the second half of his career, he’s filthy rich.

“He wants to make another run at the heavyweight championship of the world.”
