BOOKS on healthy living date back at least 800 years — and include warnings about eating eels with cheese.
Doctors in the 13th century also gave exercise and sleep advice, a researcher has found.

Books on healthy living date back at least 800 years — and include warnings about eating eels with cheese.
Professor Noa Nikolsky said: “Understanding a holistic relationship between mind and body is not as modern as we might think.
“We know people have practised preventive medicine since the beginning of time.
“But because those wellness practices were never written down, so much is lost in history.”
Prof Nikolsky, of Miami University in the US, unearthed one 13th century Italian text which reads: “Eating eels is bad for the voice, as those who know anything about medicine will attest.
“And cheese and eel are harmful when eaten together in great quantity, unless you often drink wine.”
She added: “These texts teach you to pay attention to different parts of your body and to your habits.

Oh wait, it’s even worse than we thought . . . now they’re coming back to Earth.
As UFOs go, Katy Perry and her fellow NASAssists on their Mission To Nowhere was quite the spectacle.
Here was a group of some of the most privileged women on the planet being shot into orbit to become the most privileged women in space.
Six ladies who launch on a pointless 11-minute vanity voyage that was over and done with before you had a chance to register, no that really was pop star Katy Perry looking like one of those Lycra-clad lasses from the Cannonball Run.
Meanwhile, we were all supposed to believe this Blue Origin launch was not a $150,000-a-head joyride for six rich chicks in designer jumpsuits but a giant leap for womankind.
“It’s an important moment for the future of commercial space travel and for humanity in general and for women all around,” gushed Perry in full competition-winner mode.
She went on to inform us she had felt “super-connected to love” 62 miles above her loyal fanbase.
“I think this experience has shown me you never know how much love is inside of you,” she declared.
It was just one of an asteroid field of affirmations from our star trekkers so vomit-inducing they would even make Meghan Markle cringe.
Much was made of the fact that “social entrepreneur” Amanda Nguyen had become the first Vietnamese woman in space.
Emily Ratajkowski blasts Katy Perry & Blue Origin astronauts for ‘destroying planet’ in video rant after space flight
Ditto, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, who had finally put the Bahamas beyond the blue.
Two claims that made you wonder if we’d all been missing the most important aspect of exploring space.
That being: To ensure that someone from every country on the planet has spent some time above it performing a weightless somersault while holding a daisy and simultaneously shrieking at glass-shattering decibels.
What next? Will press gangs be sent to far-flung places like Togo and the Federated States of Micronesia to enforce global compliance?

And women only, please! Oh gimme a break.
It’s no wonder Perry and her pampered passengers’ aerospace antics were quick to be lampooned — most hilariously by women, from comedian Amy Schumer to singer Kesha.
Along with all the cheap (but funny) shots, such as the Wendy’s burger chain asking on Twitter/X, “can we send her back” were some more profound jabs.
Model Emily Ratajkowski spoke for many when she harrumphed: “You say you care about Mother Earth, and you’re going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that is single-handedly destroying the planet.” Ouch!
But of course the real reason for this week’s heavenly hi-jinks is far from rocket science.
And it had little to do with women’s achievements and a whole lot to do with . . . you guessed it: Men. And two men in particular.
Billionaire boys’ toys
Monday’s launch was just the latest instalment in the seemingly never-ending cock rocket contest between Jeff Bezos, who paid for this orbital odyssey (and whose fiancée Lauren Sanchez was, of course, on board) and his fellow maniacal manchild, Elon Musk.
You’ll remember Musk’s previous SpaceX missions, like the time he sent up one of his electric cars with a dummy in the driving seat.
OK, dude.
This is what space travel has become — a celestial train set for men so rich they literally have money to burn (a tank of rocket fuel costs at least $200,000).
Both Bezos and Musk like to dress up their billionaire boys’ toys playtime as some sort of benevolent gesture to the rest of the planet.
As if the problems of all the world’s poor and downtrodden will somehow evaporate overnight when Musk drives a Tesla on Mars’s first motorway.
Or when Bezos delivers his first Amazon package to ET’s wheelie bin.
No — move over, cocaine — commercial space travel is now God’s way of telling you you’ve got too much money.
So I’m sorry to knock you off that “super-connected” nebula of love, Katy.
But with your cynical stunt you just completed yet another giant step . . . for a man.
PS ALIEN life may exist on a planet 729,000,000,000,000 miles away, according to boffins from Cambridge University.
Which makes for a great round two for Perry and her pals.
The trip will take at least 248 years to complete, there and back.
So by the time they return to Mother Earth we’ll all be dead and won’t have to listen to how bloody “empowering” they found it.
Votes must be Erned – just ask Nigel
OUR survey this week on what people think of our party leaders didn’t surprise me one bit.
Reform’sNigel Farage has more charisma than the other three – don’t forget Ed Davey! – put together.
8
Nigel Farage has a whole heap of problems to overcome – not least all those nasty racists and bigots in his partyCredit: x/@nigel_farage
Coupled with a solid grasp of what’s actually going wrong with this country, and a thick enough hide to actually spell it out, he is an attractive solution for many.
Of course, Nigel has a whole heap of problems to overcome – not least all those nasty racists and bigots in his party – before he can even dream of building that smoking shed at Number 10.
But I can see why he’s giving the likes of Tory leader Kemi Badenoch the heebie-jeebies.
She is the polar opposite of tab-puffing, pint-swilling “man of the people” Farage.
I’ve no doubt Kemi means well, but she often comes across as so uptight she makes Theresa May look like a barrel of laughs.
The plain-speaking MP for North West Essex will say she doesn’t care about such trivial matters.
But I think the electorate do.
In politics, selling the sizzle can be just as important as selling the sausage.
Look at the affection Boris Johnson had in the Red Wall seats she urgently needs to win over.
Likeability matters.
Kemi can be as tough on this, that and the other as she likes, but she needs to find a bit of the X Factor before voters will give her their “X”.
BITTER SWEET TIMES
HOW sad that youngsters find beer that is called “bitter” or “mild” too challenging.
They need it watered down and given a jazzier name, according to Wye Valley Brewery, which has just given one of its ales the gibberish moniker “Pyoneer”.

Wye Valley Brewery’s Pyoneer
A session on the bitter or mild is a rite of passage.
If you can stomach a beverage that looks like Worzel Gummidge’s bath water, you’ll be set up for any other drinks that may come your way in later life.
Growing up, I guzzled gallons of Stones Bitter at my local in Derbyshire.
A few years necking that and I was ready for anything the barman had to offer.
Just in time for my 18th birthday.
BRAVE FRED’S LESSON
HEARTBREAKING to watch Freddie Flintoff in the new trailer for his Disney+ documentary about his life-changing 2022 horror smash.
He was a very lucky lad indeed.

And it has been a gruelling comeback for the former cricket dynamo as he slowly pieces back together his handsome face.
But in spite of all this misery, we haven’t heard a single “woe is me” comment from the no-nonsense Lancastrian.
His determination to bounce back and selflessly help others through his excellent Field Of Dreams TV series was inspiring.
Bravery and positivity – that’s a lesson to us all.
Still, it’s all part of and parcel of being a football fan – for every soaring high there is a soul-sapping low just around the corner (or six if, like me, you follow Man United).

Time to go slo
I’VE just returned from a delightful week in Slovenia, also known as “wherever that is” to some folk who I told where I was going.
Among the many highlights were the charming dot matrix motorway announce-ments that attempted to regulate drivers’ speed.
One in particular tickled me: “Slovenia is a small country. What’s the hurry?” Well, quite.
There is really nothing worse than all those BMW and Audi drivers hurtling along at 100mph, flashing their lights at you for daring to drive at the speed limit.
Don’t they realise that the Complete Ar*ehole Convention they are in such a rush to get to can’t start without them?
LOOKING your best isn’t just about what you do – it’s about when you do it.
Timing is everything when it comes to your beauty routine, as your body’s natural cycles enhance different processes throughout the day.

Experts at Boots No7 have discovered your skin’s repair mechanisms are most active between 2am and 4am.
Their study reveals skin renewal operates on a 24-hour schedule, hitting its “rush hour” in the middle of the night.
So it is essential to prioritise quality sleep during those peak hours to wake up looking refreshed.
With the help of beauty therapist Jade Joseph from Zen Healthcare, Katy Docherty and Natalie Clarke reveal how to sync your routine with your Beauty Clock for maximum results.
6am: SHAVE YOUR LEGS
13
Shaving your legs between 6am to 9am reduces the risk of having to reach for the plaster box as there is an increase in blood clotting plateletsCredit: Getty
THERE is an increase in blood clotting platelets from 6am to 9am, according to a study published by the National Centre for Biotechnology but only if you are moving around during that time.
So shaving your legs then can reduce the risk of having to reach for the plaster box.
Jade says: “Always take a warm shower and exfoliate the area before shaving to remove dead skin and lift any ingrown hairs to get the closest shave.”
Best not to shave on a Monday, though. Studies have shown that skin may be more sensitive if we have broken our routine over the weekend.
. . . WASH HAIR TOO
IF you are planning to wash your hair, do it in the morning.
According to Medical News Today, going to bed with wet hair can lead to all sorts of issues.
The combination of warmth and dampness on your pillow creates the perfect environment for fungal infections to develop in the hair follicles.
If there’s a thunderstorm raging outside, however, it’s best to put off washing your hair until the next day – high humidity can lead to frizz.
7am: DON’T WASH YOUR FACE
13
Don’t wash your face in the morning to strengthen your skin’s protective moisture barrierCredit: Getty
SKIPPING your morning cleanse allows the skin to strengthen its protective moisture barrier.
The surface layer of skin is home to one trillion bacteria, known as the microbiome. It’s the skin’s first line of defence and we shouldn’t tamper with it.
If you can’t contemplate not washing your face, try using raw honey as a gentle alternative.
It’s a natural antibacterial, packed with skin-loving enzymes, and helps maintain the microbiome without stripping the skin’s protective barrier.
8am: PUT ON YOUR MAKE-UP
13
Applying make-up around 8am will give you a better application as your skin is less reactiveCredit: Getty
APPLYING make-up earlier in the morning will give better application as the skin has just completed its overnight regeneration cycle and is often hydrated, calm and less reactive.
Jade says: “Applying make-up too late in the day can mean putting product over oil build up, sweat or environmental debris.
“It’s optimal timing forr getting your slap on and taking a perfect selfie.”
1pm: GET YOUR NAILS DONE
13
Getting your nails done between 11am and 3pm means you’ll reduce the risk of smudging as it’s the warmest time of day
BETWEEN 11am and 3pm is the warmest time of day, and the temperature will help your nails dry more quickly, reducing the risk of a chip or smudge.
By 1pm, the body temperature is slightly higher and your circulation is more active.
This means better blood flow to the nail beds which can improve absorption of nourishing oils and treatments applied.
Jade says: “Always finish with a hand cream with SPF as your hands are the first areas to show signs of ageing.”
2pm: TAKE A NAP
13

AS we sleep, our body releases a growth hormone that stimulates collagen production, according to Nuffield Health, so if you can fit in a nap, you may be able to help boost and plump your skin.
And experts typically recommend that adults take a nap eight or more hours before bedtime to avoid disrupting your real sleep.
When you lie down, apply cooling eye patches and a light hydrating mist.
Jade says: “Keep your head slightly elevated to wake up looking and feeling like you have just had a facial.”
3pm: TREAT YOURSELF TO A MASSAGE
13
Enjoy a massage a couple of hours after lunch, at around 3pm, to reduce bloatingCredit: Getty
Having the massage a couple of hours after lunch may help shake off that horrible bloated feeling.
Lie with your legs elevated during a massage – it encourages better circulation and lymph flow which helps reduce swelling, bloating and water retention.
4pm: HAVE A TWEAKMENT
13
Don’t have any tweakments in the evening before going to bedCredit: Getty
ACCORDING to experts at The Cosmetic Skin Clinic, which specialises in non-surgical aesthetic treatments, it’s important to try to stay upright for three to four hours after having Botox.
This helps prevent the injected substance from spreading to unintended areas.
So you don’t want to have Botox in the evening when you’re closer to hitting the hay.
Try sleeping on a silk pillowcase post-Botox to reduce friction and irritation.
5pm: EAT DINNER EARLY TO LOSE WEIGHT
13
Have dinner at around 5pm to give your body more time to digest and boost your metabolismCredit: Getty
TIMING your meals could be the secret weapon to staying trim.
A study by Harvard researchers revealed those who dined just two and a half hours before bedtime burned significantly fewer calories than those who wrapped up their last meal six and a half hours before going to bed.
The science suggests that giving your body more time to digest before sleep keeps your metabolism firing on all cylinders, making those late-night snacks a potential culprit for holding on to extra weight.
Your body will be focused on digestion, rather than repairing your skin, if you eat too late in the evening.
7.30pm: WASH OFF YOUR MAKE-UP AND CLEANSE
13
Clean your face when the sun sets as your skin gears up for renewalCredit: Getty
BY cleaning your face when the sun sets, you help to keep the circadian rhythm, your body’s internal clock, in balance.
According to researchers at the Center For Genomic Regulation, when the sun sets, your skin’s repair systems spring into action to produce new skin cells, helping to slow down the ageing process.
Washing your face at this time will remove environmental stressors, right as your skin gears up for renewal.
Jade says: “When washing your face, use an oil-based cleansing balm first to melt off make-up, followed by a gentle foam cleanser to ensure a deep clean.”
9pm: HAVE A BATH
13
Treat yourself to a bath an hour or two before bed to improve your sleepCredit: Getty
Try adding flat champagne, which can have a mild exfoliating effect. Or try Jade’s more traditional suggestion.
She says: “Add Epsom salts or lavender oil to your bath for an extra calming effect.”
10pm: SLATHER ON FAKE TAN
13
Tanning products can make skin more susceptible to sun damage, so make sure to apply it before going to bedCredit: Getty
A STUDY from Florida found dihydroxyacetone (DHA) in tanning products can make skin more susceptible to sun damage for 24 hours after application. So get it on the night before.
Worried about reaching your back? Take a strip of cling film and lie it on the bathroom floor, then apply some fake tan lotion to the centre. Pick it up and apply the fake tan to your back like you do when you’re using a towel.
She says: “Always moisturize dry areas including elbows, knees, hands and ankles to prevent patchiness.”

His total does not include costs for a separate trial last year in which he got a 12-year term for raping a girl of 13 after plying her with booze and drugs.
Five other defendants, aged from 40 to 45 and jailed for between ten and 20 years, each received between £60,147 and £99,168 in legal aid.
The seventh, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had £90,849. All bar one of the gang were convicted of rape — and one of them fell asleep in court as impact statements put forward by the victims were read out.
News of the gang’s legal aid bill comes after the Government was accused of axing local child rape inquiries to appease Pakistani voters.
Former Equalities Commission chief Sir Trevor Phillips called ministers “utterly shameful” for watering down a series of investigations.
The Home Office said last week that a £5million fund for five inquiries into grooming gangs in Oldham and other areas will instead be diverted to projects such as victims’ panels.
Yesterday, a spokeswoman added: “Any claims that the funding has been watered down, or that we are backing down from supporting local inquiries, is patently false.
“A flexible approach to funding will allow us to support more than five inquiries.”
The Legal Aid Agency said cash is not paid to defendants but to their legal representatives “to ensure access to justice and, in criminal cases, to ensure a fair trial”.
That’s despite guidelines advising us all to take supplements from October until April each year, as sunlight – the primary source of vitamin D – is in short supply during these months.
If vitamin D deficiency is diagnosed, a regime of a high-dose replacement of the vitamin will be advised by the doctor, either as weekly or daily doses over six to ten weeks.
After this, any symptoms caused by the deficiency, such as fatigue, muscle weakness or mood changes, should be alleviated.
So if they are no better, it’s important to return to the doctor as there may be an alternative cause.
Low energy levels could be linked to conditions such as anaemia, thyroid dysfunction or chronic fatigue syndrome.
Additionally, vitamin D deficiency often coexists with deficiencies in other nutrients such as magnesium or calcium, which are essential for energy.
So, if you haven’t already, see your GP again and, in the meantime, focus on a vitamin D-rich diet by eating foods such as oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), eggs and fortified foods.
TIP: If you often feel dizzy when standing up, it could be due to low blood pressure.
This Morning’s Dr Zoe rushed to A&E and ‘writes an emergency will’ in hospital bed after terrifying health battle
Try contracting your calf muscles before standing, as this helps push blood back to your heart.
And rise slowly.
But if you experience this frequently, visit the GP, especially if you also have any heart palpitations, shortness of breath, blurred vision or weakness.
IF you’d told me a few years ago that I’d consider hair oil an essential in my routine, I’d have laughed.
I’ve got fine hair that gets greasy quickly, so it was a huge no-no.

ARKIVE THE GOOD HABIT HAIR OIL, 50ml, £15, arkiveheadcare.com: This was the first oil that convinced me I could in fact use hair oils, so I’ve got a real soft spot for it.

I apply two pumps, which is enough to cover my waist-length hair, so it lasts for months.

President Xi Jinping branded Trump’s tactics “unilateral acts of bullying”.
A spokesman for China’s commerce ministry said the US tariff policy would “go down as a joke in the history of world economics”.
He added that the bit-by-bit rises had “become nothing more than a numbers game” and it would shrug off any further increases as US goods would already be unmarketable for Chinese consumers.
She claimed that he “negotiates a deal better than anyone else who has sat before him”.
Ms Leavitt said the “phone has been ringing off the hook” from 75 countries looking to cut trade deals and already had 15 offers on the table.
The update came on another volatile day for global markets, with stocks climbing higher after a roller-coaster ride which saw trillions lost and gained.
US government bonds suffered their worst day in six years in a stark warning about investors’ confidence in Trump’s policies.

She was in a hospitality box with a pal at the José Alvalade Stadium.
Maya also shared snaps from Rúben’s luxury villa during her stay before returning to London where she was seen in the crowd watching Usher at London’s O2 Arena this weekend.
The couple got together after being introduced at the MTV EMAs in Manchester in November, following the breakdown of Maya’s on-off relationship with rapper Stormzy last summer.
At last month’s Brit Awards, it was also revealed Maya has started taking Portuguese lessons.
She captioned an Instagram post: “Lessons have started,” as a man believed to be Rúben spoke Portuguese in the background.
Weeks later, Maya posted snaps of her and pals after watching City’s 2-2 draw with Brighton.
And speaking about her take on relationships last week, Maya said: “I’m such a lover but I am a big leaver as well.

THE problem with teenagers, a headteacher told me this week, is that they are trying to live in two different moral universes.
He says that there is the moral universe we all know, with its rules, conventions and niceties.

And then there’s another universe, the internet’s moral universe, where there are next to no rules and precious few niceties.
OK, every day’s a school day, so I’ll take that on board and, just for good measure, I’m going to throw a third moral universe into this mix — football’s moral universe.
This one, while not all bad by any means, can be a very ugly place indeed.
I’ve not met Phil Foden but from what I’ve seen and heard, as well as being a prodigiously gifted footballer he’s a decent guy.
READ MORE FROM ADRIAN CHILES
I was talking to one of his coaches at England youth level.
Listing the attributes Foden showed as a kid — speed, awareness, bravery, command of the ball etc — the coach added another, one which has stuck in my mind.
“He cared what his teammates thought about him,” said the coach.
Interesting that. You’d think that caring what your teammates thought of you would be common enough among footballers to not even merit mention. It would seem this isn’t the case.
Phil cares though, and that’s another reason I hold him in high esteem.
Perhaps that’s why I was more appalled than usual at the behaviour of football fans when I saw that photo of Pep Guardiola embracing him after he’d endured Man Utd fans chanting ghastly things about his Mum.
‘They should be ashamed’ – Pep Guardiola slams Man Utd fans for sick chants aimed at City ace Phil Foden’s mum
Awful. But incredibly, to a significant number of fans such conduct is quite acceptable. Because, you see, this is in football’s moral universe where, for some reason, there are those who think it’s OK to behave despicably.
Declan Rice, double miracle-freekick scorer and another nice guy, endures similar stuff — along with his long-time partner, the equally appealing Lauren Fryer.
Lauren, you see, doesn’t conform to some football fans’ idea of what a footballer’s wife should look like. So the poor woman gets abused on social media and, for Declan’s benefit, from the stands. Dreadful.
This is what happens in football’s moral universe. We seem to forget that footballers are human beings with, you know, feelings. However thick their skins have to be, they still have feelings.
I’ve been as guilty of forgetting this as anyone. Many years ago, when I was presenting Match Of The Day 2, I made a joking reference to Arjen Robben’s baldness.
The following week I got a letter — yes, a letter, that’s how long ago it was — from someone who said I should be ashamed of myself as Robben could well be very sensitive about his hair loss.
Initially I scoffed and was minded to reply that Chelsea’s multi-millionaire Dutch superstar could probably deal with a jibe from me.
But when I had thought about it, even though the man himself probably couldn’t have cared less, I concluded that I had been very wrong to mock his appearance.
That was on TV. I’m afraid I’ve said a lot worse as a fan at matches.
I’m not without sin
So I don’t preach this sermon from any moral high ground, because I’m not without sin. I confess, I’ve yelled and chanted stuff at football matches that I would never, and I mean never, have yelled or chanted anywhere else.
I shouted some dreadful things at Jack Grealish, for example, at a play-off semi-final when he was at Villa. I’m quite sure he couldn’t care less, but I can’t say it was my finest hour.
I don’t excuse myself, but these things happen in football’s moral universe, where it’s not that there’s no right or wrong, but there is a big, bad grey area.
There’s a line in there somewhere and we all know where it is.
Bawling abuse at a footballer, calling them terrible names, isn’t a good look. But it probably, arguably, just about falls on the right side of the line.
Abusing that footballer’s family is a different matter. That’s on the wrong side of the line.
It’s bang out of order, and everyone guilty knows this.

The role journalists played in Donald Trump’s rise will one day be worthy of examinationCredit: Getty
WHEN the historybooks about Donald Trump are written, the role of us journalists in his rise will be worthy of examination.
We can take a lot of the blame/credit – delete according to your view of The Orange Man.
Like him or loathe him, laugh at him or with him, we have found it quite impossible not to give him all the attention he craves because he provides us with all the material we crave.
He fills pages of papers and hours of television, radio and podcasts. Where would we be without him.
After his first term ended in ignominious defeat, we assumed we’d seen the last of him.
Back then, the brilliant political commentator, comedian and excellent Trump mimic Matt Forde captured the mood of many of us when he tweeted, “Goodnight sweet prince”.
And now it’s like he never went away.

THE march of artificial intelligence will, at worst, destroy humanity or, at best, just take a lot of our jobs.
One thing pleases me, though, even if it means me being replaced by a machine – I’ve heard what’s about to happen described as the first technological step-change in history that’s going to hit middle-class jobs the hardest.
Writers and radio presenters will be easy meat for the machines.
But it’ll be a long time before AI can do proper jobs, requiring blood, sweat and tears as well as great skill.

A CHIP shop owner in Gloucestershire has apologised for putting up the price of cod and chips to 15 quid.
I can’t remember the last time I left a chippy having dropped anywhere near that little. I just get too excited.
After a couple of pints with some mates in Stourbridge last month, I popped into the local chip shop on the way home.
Before I knew it I’d bought large cod and chips, small cod and chips, mushy peas, two battered potato slices and some cod roe.
And this was only for me and my Mum. We’re still not back to full health, financially or physically.

EVERYONE I know is banging on about White Lotus being the best TV ever. I’ve heard it praised so many times that it must be true.
Well, I’ve found it to be absolutely indigestible, veering wildly between rather silly and terribly boring.
But I’m glad I saw the bits I managed to stay awake for because that was enough to confirm for me that Stockport’s Aimee Lou Wood is just brilliant.
At first you can see nothing but her proudly prominent teeth. But before long all you’re seeing is a brilliant acting talent going from strength to strength.

ED SHEERAN picked some seriously grotty Nineties-style venues to hang out in for the filming of his video to song Old Phone.
He is waiting to release latest album Play and brought out new single Azizam last week.
But he kept things down market for locations on the vid to accompany follow-up track Old Phone.
My insiders told me: “Ed wanted to go old school for his new music video.
“They filmed it in Gloucester, a city in Massachusetts, and picked loads of rundown venues.
“Ed was seen filming in a grim hotel as well as the Cape Ann Lanes bowling alley and a local pub. He has gone for a really retro vibe for the video and it’s really nostalgic.
“The places they filmed were so rundown though, it was funny to see someone as rich and famous as Ed hanging out there.”
Ed is currently based at his massive estate in Suffolk but said this week he could see himself moving over to the US permanently, saying: “Nashville is my favourite city in the States and it’s always been my end goal to move to Nashville.”
It’s one of the best cities in the US, so I am not surprised Ed fancies a move.

Justin Bieber has been taking strange online digs, including one aimed at Stevie WonderCredit: Getty
A DECADE ago, Justin Bieber was getting into trouble and making bad-taste jokes.
But if you thought he’d grown out of being a berk, think again.
In a strange post on Thursday night, Justin shared a screenshot of himself on a video call with Stevie Wonder, who is blind, and wrote: “This fool never sees my Facetimes.”
Justin then appeared to hit out at his former pal and stylist Ryan Good, with whom he co-founded fashion brand Drew House in 2018.
In a dig at his former colleagues there, he said: “If you’re rocking with me, the human Justin Bieber, don’t waste ur money on Drew House.”
Justin’s headed to Coachella this weekend with wife Hailey, so I’ve no doubt his harebrained antics will continue.
Suga rush of hits
By Howell Davies
NOT many acts can start a gig with five Top Ten tunes, but Sugababes whipped their fans into a frenzy when they did just that.
A curtain fell from the roof of the O2 to reveal them singing Overload, which still sounds as fresh now as it did when it came out 25 years ago. And from there it was hit after hit, with Hole In The Head, In The Middle, Red Dress and Ugly.
Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy harmonised on stage and strutted their stuff, with new single Jungle slotting right in with their back catalogue.
Unbelievably, it’s their first arena tour, and some more pop pizzazz to fill the room would have been very welcome.
But with a total of 14 Top 20 hits in their set, there was no chance of even the most casual fan going more than a few minutes without a singalong.
These ladies have proven themselves to be incredible live vocalists and with the songs to back it up, their show is an absolute joy.

LEWIS CAPALDI might have a sore head after enjoying a lock-in at The Dublin Castle.
The singer, who I’m told will be releasing new music soon, knocked back pints of lager with pals into the early hours at the North London boozer.
An onlooker told me: “Lewis was having a grand old time and had his mates in stitches.
“He arrived at The Dublin Castle after midnight and stayed until way past 3am. It was a proper wild lock-in.
“He was hanging out with a big group that included Georgie, the fiancée of Grian Chatten from Fontaines D.C. and some of her friends.”
IT’S 1985. Somewhere in Los Angeles, a studio switchboard lights up. A receptionist takes the call, puts it through to one of the recording spaces, and says in deadpan tones: “It’s Bob Dylan on the phone for Dave Stewart.”
Even though Stewart and Annie Lennox are riding a wave of phenomenal pop success as the Eurythmics, he can’t quite believe his ears.

Dylan as a teenager
“At the time, I was producing a record for a guy called Feargal Sharkey,” he recalls today, referring to The Undertones singer’s debut solo album featuring the hit A Good Heart.
“At first, I thought it was Feargal having a laugh because he knew I was obsessed with Dylan but, as soon as I heard the voice, I was like, ‘Oh s**t! It can’t be anybody else. That voice is so recognisable’.”
The notoriously elusive American legend and the pop guru from Sunderland agree to meet later “at a tiny Thai restaurant on Sunset Strip.”
They instantly hit it off, spending “four or five hours” together, ending up in “a late-night Mexican place” and cementing what becomes an enduring friendship.
For Stewart, it’s a chance to finally get to know his biggest hero — the singer who prompted him to pick up a guitar as a teenager and who inspired his lifelong infatuation with music.
Dylan, in return, came to appreciate his British pal, once referring to him as “Captain Dave, a dreamer, a fearless innovator, a visionary of the highest order.”
The reason I’m telling you all this is because Stewart has celebrated his love of Bob by making a covers album — Dave Does Dylan.
‘I loved playing football’
Talking via Zoom from Nashville, he explains: “I’d always been crazy about Dylan and was doodling away in a hotel room, reminiscing about playing his songs in folk clubs when I was a kid. “So, I put my iPhone camera on a stick and started singing straight into it.”
Stewart found the process quite therapeutic. “I played 60 shows last year,” he says.
“You get to the hotel or backstage and there’s this waiting, waiting, waiting.
Bob Dylan biopic is an immaculate portrayal of the grumpy singer’s rise to fame – shame his women feel like complete unknowns
“I’ve always found ways of coping with it. Even back in Eurythmics days, I’d have a little studio set-up so Annie could pop in and we’d mess about.”
Over time, Stewart assembled a sizable collection of Dylan covers, which he would post on Instagram.
Such has been the positive response that he has turned his stripped-back, one-take efforts into a 14-track album — just his warm, expressive vocals and deft acoustic guitar.
Dave Does Dylan is released tomorrow on vinyl as part of Record Store Day and will be available on streaming services in July.
There’s also a PBS special in the States, filmed with a band. The album bears songs from his subject’s folk period — which Stewart learned in the Sixties — such as A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall, Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright and To Ramona.
It takes in well-known Dylan songs from other eras like Simple Twist Of Fate, Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door and Make You Feel My Love.
There’s a gorgeous rendition of lesser-known Emotionally Yours from 1985’s Empire Burlesque album, which, you’ll discover, is of special significance.
Like all the other kids, I dreamed of playing for Sunderland but then I had my knee broken during a match. It was shattered in a few places.
Dave Stewart
But before his thoughts return to that year and the fateful meeting of musical minds in LA, followed by reminiscences of further encounters with Dylan, Stewart casts through the mists of time to his childhood.
“I just wanted to play football,” he says. “I would turn out for three teams on a Saturday.
“Like all the other kids, I dreamed of playing for Sunderland but then I had my knee broken during a match. It was shattered in a few places.
“The same month, my mum left my dad. My brother had gone to college, and I was stuck in the house, bored out of my mind. Outside, there was horizontal, freezing rain.”
But when the postman delivered a parcel from Stewart’s cousin, everything changed. “My cousin was nine years older than me,” he reports.
“He sent two pairs of corduroy Levi’s and some blues albums.
“I put one of the records on. Very early blues, Robert Johnson maybe. It had me in a trance, but I didn’t really understand it.
“Then I noticed my brother had two other albums, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan and Another Side Of Bob Dylan.
‘I became obsessed’
“When I listened to those, I thought, ‘Holy st, this really is music!’ So I hobbled into the kitchen and put the radio on.
“It’s 1964, I’m 13 years old and I’m hearing The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Dusty Springfield. It was f*ing amazing.”
Enthused by what he heard, Stewart went to his brother’s wardrobe and got hold of his five-string guitar. “I couldn’t really play it,” he admits. “But I tried to make a bluesy sound.”
Cue a visit to Mr Len Gibson, a World War Two veteran, “who had made a guitar out of nothing when he was a Japanese PoW.”
I sang to myself — all Bob Dylan — because I could put those two records on again and again,” he continues. I became obsessed and forgot about everything else.
Dave Stewart
Stewart says: “He lived round the corner and very sweetly showed me how to play.”
Despite learning with “the tuning all wrong, like a banjo or something” and having to start again, he was bitten by the music bug.
“I sang to myself — all Bob Dylan — because I could put those two records on again and again,” he continues.
“I became obsessed and forgot about everything else.
“My school grades went from being third from top of the class to bottom. One thing went up and everything else crashed down.”
By the time he was 15, Stewart was itching to perform in the folk clubs around Sunderland — The Londonderry, The George & Dragon and “others outside the city where I would go on the bus.”
He says: “I looked young for my age, and I remember standing in a corridor as the guy on the door said, ‘You can’t come in, son.’”
Eventually Stewart’s persistence paid off and he presented a set featuring To Ramona and Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.
He later learned I’ll Be Your Mirror by The Velvet Underground & Nico.
By 1970, Stewart had moved to London and was part of an acoustic band signed to Elton John’s label. “We sang harmonies and knew Crosby Stills & Nash songs,” he says.
DYLAN ON ‘CAPTAIN DAVE’
IN typically eloquent fashion, Bob Dylan once paid tribute to his friend Dave Stewart via a fax:
“Captain Dave is a dreamer and a fearless innovator, a visionary of high order, very delicately tractable on the surface but beneath that, he’s a slamming, thumping, battering ram, very mystical but rational and sensitive when it comes to the hot irons of art forms.
“An explosive musician, deft guitar player, innately recognises the genius in other people and puts it into play without being manipulative.
“With him, there’s mercifully no reality to yesterday. He is incredibly gracious and soulful, can command the ship and steer the course, dragger, trawler or man of war, Captain Dave.”
“When I was 19, but looked about 15, I married my girlfriend. We would lie on the floor of the bedsit getting stoned listening to Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, Nick Drake, John Martyn — and all four sides of Bob Dylan’s Blonde On Blonde.
“From then on, I started collecting every Dylan album that came out, in every format.
“I loved his Seventies records, Blood On The Tracks and Desire. He couldn’t quite relate to the dance-pop Eighties, but I find gems on every single one of his albums.”
It was indeed a strange time for Bob, having to navigate synth-based music when his go-to styles had been folk, rock, blues and country.
Conversely, Stewart was a scene-setter in tandem with Annie Lennox.
The pair first got noticed as members of The Tourists, scoring a Top 30 hit with a cover of Dusty Springfield’s I Only Want To Be With You.
‘We drank sake’
But, of course, they’re best remembered for a euphoric rush of hits as Eurythmics — Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), Love Is A Stranger, Who’s That Girl?, Here Comes The Rain Again and the rest.
We drank quite a bit of sake, which is Japanese of course, and Thai whisky — and we talked for ages and really hit it off.
Dave Stewart
Right in the middle of that mayhem, in 1985, Stewart found himself sitting in the Thai restaurant with Dylan.
He picks up the story: “We were seated in the far corner, and I asked if they could put a little screen around us.

“We drank quite a bit of sake, which is Japanese of course, and Thai whisky — and we talked for ages and really hit it off.”
They discovered a shared obsession with art-house movies by the likes of Italian directors Federico Fellini and Pier Paolo Pasolini.
Stewart had already been involved in making the surreal, now iconic video for Sweet Dreams, “which the record company thought was bonkers.”
It showed androgynous Lennox with close-cropped orange hair, dressed in a man’s suit and tie — and Stewart fooling around in a field with a cello.
His chat with Dylan took a dramatic twist when, “by the time we’d moved to a late-night Mexican place, Bob said, ‘Why don’t we make a film tomorrow?’ He was serious.”
With zero notice, Stewart assembled a crew to shoot videos for two songs from Dylan’s latest album, Empire Burlesque — Emotionally Yours and When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky.
For the first, Dylan had said: “I want an actress who looks like a very young Elizabeth Taylor and I want to have an argument with her.”
Stewart laughs before relating the scene. “Bob sat under a tree outside the church where we were filming, arguing with this girl, just to get the horrified look on her face — but you can’t hear it because there is music playing!
“For the second video, Bob didn’t have his band so there’s me playing guitar, Feargal [Sharkey] going mad on his tambourine and a girl we met in the Mexican place singing backing vocals.”
After these fun but chaotic scenes, Stewart and Dylan “met loads of times.”
“I took the boys [his two sons] round to Bob’s place and he showed them how to milk a cow,” he says.
“Then he’d come round to my house in LA on a motorbike. One time, the guy looking after the studio thought somebody had broken in but it was just Bob wearing goggles.”
Stewart recalls how the Traveling Wilburys — Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne — convened in his back garden for nine days in May, 1988, “recording their first album in my little studio.”
He also talks of meeting up with Bob in Rio De Janeiro when they were on separate South American tours. “We decided to go into the countryside and our tour managers were freaking out.
“We drank a very sugary, very strong Brazilian drink. It gives you a blinding headache in the morning.”
Another time, in London, Stewart invited Dylan onto his houseboat in Camden Lock.
“My mum was making soup and Bob was just sitting there, playing the guitar,” he says.
“Then we took a black cab to Hyde Park and visited Speaker’s Corner. I thought Bob would enjoy seeing people standing on boxes ranting.”

The visit clearly made an impression because Dylan’s TV Talkin’ Song from his 1990 album Under The Red Sky begins with the lines: “One time in London, I’d gone out for a walk / Past a place called Hyde Park where people talk.”
Then came a celebrated Tuesday afternoon in 1993 when Stewart filmed Dylan strolling around Camden Market — this time for a cover of traditional folk song Blood In My Eyes.
He says: “I got Bob to put on a top hat and said to him, ‘We’ll just walk around and I’ll film people’s reactions’.
“Very quickly, about an hour in, I realised that we didn’t have security and there were quite a lot of people about.
“So, I rang this great Colombian girl who had won a trip to England in a photography competition. She joined us and took pictures of Bob — one of them became the album cover.”
As you can tell, Dave Does Dylan comes with an incredible back story, providing rare insight into both artists.
Stewart still catches Bob’s live shows whenever he can, seeing him at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre and Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.
All we need now is an album of Eurythmics covers called Dylan Does Dave.

EURYTHMICS: NEVER SAY NEVER
ANNIE Lennox and Dave Stewart remain on good terms and adopt a “never say never” approach to Eurythmics reunions.
The last was a sublime set in 2022 when they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Lennox has ruled out touring but Stewart keeps the flag flying by performing the Eurythmics Songbook with his band and Vanessa Amorosi on vocals.
“The songs are still on the radio all the time in the States,” Stewart says. “I can play whatever I want, having co-written and produced all the songs. I know them by heart.
“And I can stick in anything else I want – a Dylan song maybe!”
Malek appears somewhat out of his element in this roleCredit: AP
AFTER losing wife Sarah in a devastating terrorist attack in London, introverted CIA codebreaker Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is consumed by grief and rage.
When the investigation stalls and his superior refuses to let him pursue the attackers, Heller takes matters into his own hands.
What follows is a tense but uneven spy thriller that benefits from some decent performances, but struggles to offer much originality.
Directed by James Hawes, The Amateur sets up an intriguing premise. Heller isn’t a highly trained assassin, he’s an intelligence specialist, a man more comfortable behind a computer than in the field.
Lacks intensity
His transformation into an unlikely vigilante makes this compelling, if clichéd.
Sadly, the Bohemian Rhapsody star appears somewhat out of his element in this role, highlighting his limitations within the action-thriller genre.
The script follows a well-worn revenge-thriller formula. The action sequences, though well executed, lack the raw, visceral intensity of similar films.
The pacing also stumbles at times — after a gripping first act, the middle portion drags and is bogged down by exposition and repetitive encounters with shadowy informants, corrupt officials, and an array of villains.
Jon Bernthal’s brief appearances as Jackson “the Bear” O’Brien feel strangely inconsequential. It’s hard to understand his casting in such a minor role, unless it’s a set-up for a sequel.
One of the interesting elements is the presence of Laurence Fishburne as Robert Henderson, Heller’s CIA trainer.
Henderson’s role is ambiguous — he’s both a mentor and an obstacle, offering guidance while keeping Heller on a tight leash.
Mufasa The Lion King review – Disney can take pride in this beautiful prequel
Fishburne brings a commanding presence, arming Henderson with a mix of fatherly wisdom and cold pragmatism. It’s never clear where his loyalties lie, and this adds a layer of tension.
The film shines in its quieter moments. Heller’s struggle with grief and the psychological toll of his mission are handled with nuance.
The Amateur is a solid thriller that falls short of greatness. It’s worth seeing for the action, but is let down by predictable storytelling and Malek’s less than convincing delivery.
Still, I’d be lying if I said I was bored.

Meghann Fahy shines as Violet alongside date Henry (Brandon Sklenar)Credit: PA
A SUCCESSFUL thriller understands the assignment: stay sharp, remain focused and deliver a constant stream of tension.
And this latest offering from horror outfit Blumhouse Productions manages that perfectly.
What happens when your phone is bombarded with anonymous AirDropped threats telling you to kill your date, or your family dies?
Writer-director Christopher Landon takes this eerily plausible premise and spins it into a tense, sometimes hilarious ride.
Meghann Fahy shines as Violet, a domestic abusesurvivor and single mother, dipping her toe in the datingpool. Her date, Henry (Brandon Sklenar), seems sweet.
But when a message directs Violet to check her security cameras, revealing an intruder in her home threatening her son, the tension rockets, forcing her into an impossible choice.
As the night escalates, so does the paranoia, twisting a simple dinner date into a fight for survival. Though some text-on-screen moments feel clunky, Drop remains fun and gripping.
Fahy’s performance anchors the film, while Landon keeps the momentum relentless.

One to One found a surprisingly unknown and interesting angle about the life of John Lennon and Yoko OnoCredit: ABC
YOU might think there’s nothing left to know about The Beatles, but director Kevin Macdonald has found a surprisingly unknown and interesting angle about the life of John Lennon and Yoko Ono in New York, post-Beatles.
While many might think they just lay in bed for attention, they were pretty busy.
Having both decided to reject the luxury life, they bunked up in a two-bedroom flat in Greenwich Village and became political activists.
They put together the One to One benefit for disabled kids, having seen a distressing documentary about how they were treated in America.
The film features recorded phone conversations from the time, interviews with those around John and Yoko, archive footage and a recreation of their apartment.
Unintentionally hilarious moments include Bob Dylan having his bins rifled through and Yoko demanding live butterflies for her latest piece of art, but it also leaves you with plenty to think about.
As well as a newfound respect for the woman who allegedly broke up The Beatles.

DONALD Trump’s tariff war with the world caused another day of huge hits for stock markets — as he joked with a baseball team.
More than $8.5trillion (£6.6trillion) has now been wiped off international stock markets since Mr Trump unleashed his so-called “Liberation Day”.

The unfazed US President threatened to slap another 50 per cent of tariffs on China after Beijing fired back with their own 34 per cent retaliatory levies.
The move — on top of the eyewatering 54 per cent import taxes sprung on China last week — could plunge trade between the rival super- powers into the deep freeze, sparking a major global recession.
Friends begged the President to delay “economic nuclear war” after stocks were pounded for a third day, but he dismissed the turbulence as “medicine.”
Some 13.5 per cent was wiped off some markets — making the self-inflicted economic hit half as bad as the infamous 1987 Black Monday crash.
The market turmoil was ranked worse than the advent of World War Two, 9/11 and the start of the Covid 19 pandemic.
Hopes Mr Trump could inject a 90-day delay to global tariffs briefly saw markets rally in the afternoon, only for gains to evaporate as the White House dismissed the online rumours as “fake news.”
After markets nosedived and he took a swing at China, he was pictured with World Series winners the LA Dodgers, who gathered at the White House to meet him after claiming the 2024 title.
The President then held a press conference hailing the players as ”the best-looking people I’ve ever seen”.
But Mr Trump made no mention of the unfolding economic crisis.
Benjamin Netanyahu also met Mr Trump yesterday, becoming the first foreign leader to visit since he unleashed the tariffs.
Trump urges people ‘not to be stupid’ as he issues new tariff ultimatum to China
The Israeli PM was greeted outside the White House with a firm handshake as he arrived for talks.
At a joint press conference, Mr Trump confirmed he would not be pausing tariffs, saying: “We’re not looking at that.”
Last night, Sir Keir Starmer called for “cool heads” while the European Union made an unprecedented offer to reduce all their tariffs for US goods to zero if they are spared 20 per cent import taxes announced last week.
Speaking before markets opened late on Sunday, Mr Trump insisted: “I don’t want anything to go down, but sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.”
He added that nations must come to him for a deal to spare the tariff pain, gloating: “They are coming to the table.

“They want to talk but there’s no talk unless they pay us a lot of money on a yearly basis.”
By yesterday morning, the sell-off gathered pace in Asia where markets played catch-up on the jitters after some were closed on Friday due to national holidays.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index dived by 13.7 per cent – the fourth biggest slump in its history.
Asian stocks have been pummelled because those countries have the most to lose from harsh tariffs on China, Thailand, Taiwan and South Korea.
AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould said: “This market sell-off feels brutal because it is relentless. Often, we see one or two bad days then a rebound. We’re now on day three and the sell-off is intensifying, not dying down.”
Traders also reacted to growing fears of a global recession, with Wall Street bank Goldman Sachs raising the chance to a 45 per cent probability.
US financier Bill Ackman, who has been a Trump cheerleader, warned the tariffs had caused a “self-induced economic nuclear winter” for the US and urged him to consider a 90-day pause.
Economic nuclear war
The billionaire warned: “If, on the other hand . . . we launch economic nuclear war on every country in the world, business investment will grind to a halt, consumers will close their wallets and pocket books, and we will severely damage our reputation with the rest of the world that will take years and potentially decades to rehabilitate.”
But a fellow billionaire, BlackRock chief Larry Fink, played down the long-term threat of the market turmoil, calling the recent sell-offs as a “buying opportunity”.
In London the FTSE 100 fell by 4.38 per cent. It has lost 11 per cent over three days of trading.
Tom Stevenson, investment director at Fidelity, said: “The scale of the falls either side of the weekend evoke memories of the 1987 crash.
“At the time of writing, futures markets were pricing in a third consecutive day of heavy falls for the US market. If this is what transpires, this will be one of the worst weeks in the market since Black Monday in 1987.”
