Brit steals towels from sunbed hoggers at 1:30am because ‘they deserved it’

Brit mum Samantha Cooper was enjoying a two-week sunshine break with her family in Cyprus when she became fed up with the daily scramble to find a spot by the pool

A British holidaymaker has been caught on camera shamelessly stealing towels from sunbed hoggers who were reserving loungers in the early morning hours. Sunbed wars annoyed one holidaying Manchester mum so much that she took matters into her own hand – and her daughter said ‘they deserved it’.

Mum Samantha Cooper was enjoying a two-week sunshine break with her family in Cyprus when she became fed up with the daily scramble to find a spot by the pool. Despite the hotel’s strict rule banning towels being put down before 9am, the mum says every morning was a struggle to bag a lounger – and it wasn’t long before she discovered why.

From their hotel balcony, 40-year-old Samantha spotted the culprits sneaking down at 1:30 am to claim sunbeds they wouldn’t use until well into the following afternoon – and by day five, the Manchester mum had seen enough. She strode to the pool and stripped the towels, freeing the beds up for swimmers and sunbathers who would actually use them.

“To be fair, they deserved it,” her 25-year-old daughter Ellie Ikin said.

Ellie said: “They were never down there until at least 3pm. Every morning was a struggle.

“The hotel said they had rules of no one putting towels down until 9am, but no one listened.

“My mum noticed they were putting towels down at 1.30am from her balcony.

“We were annoyed because the people who were doing it didn’t sit around the pool until later in the afternoon.

“I was happy she pulled them off so other people actually got a chance to get a bed when they wanted to sit around the pool in the morning.”

Ellie, who was holidaying in Cyprus with her mum, said she was happy the move gave other holidaymakers a chance to grab a bed for a morning swim or some sunbathing. And while there was no drama – the towel owners going back to their old ways the very next day – the bold move made it easier to find a spot by the pool for a while.

She added: “It’s selfish. I completely understand the need of getting a bed early, but 1.30am putting towels out when you have no intentions of being there in the morning is ridiculous.”

It comes as sunbed wars play out in several other holiday spots across Europe, with another British family caught up in the antics declaring ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’.

And tourists in Spain have also been seen caught up in sunbed craziness way before the crack of dawn, even using torches to secure their sun-lounging spots beside the pool.

‘I’m a holiday sunbed war veteran – there’s one unwritten rule for bagging best spot’

Johnny Seifert, 32, from Borehamwood, has spent years perfecting the art of sunbathing and has shared his top unwritten rules for bagging the best poolside spot

The self-proclaimed ‘King of sunbeds’ has spilled the beans on how to secure a prime poolside spot this summer, revealing his top holiday sunbathing secrets.

Johnny Seifert, 32, a veteran holidaymaker from Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, has gathered a treasure trove of tactics to maximise his time soaking up the rays.

The showbiz journalist and content creator has built quite a name for himself with his clever guidance on bagging the best sun lounger.

Now, he’s revealing everything about becoming the ideal sunbather – without causing any upset.

Should all the sunbeds be reserved by towels yet remain empty, Johnny recommends waiting an hour before moving the towels aside, reports the Daily Star.

He also maintains that demolishing a full-sized pizza – or any food requiring cutlery – whilst lounging is an absolute no-no.

For families or large groups, he recommends claiming clusters of sunbeds rather than a row, to reduce disturbance to fellow guests.

Johnny explained: “I’d keep an eye on the clock for an hour, and if nobody shows up, sorry – it’s my sunbed now. You can always play innocent and say you didn’t realise it was taken.”

“As for food, I’ve got no issue with you munching on breadsticks, or perhaps a slice of pizza. But a whole pizza, anything pungent, or if you’re scoffing a salad with mayo dribbling down your chin, do us a favour and find a table.

“Anything that needs a knife and fork, keep it away from the pool. Drinks, on the other hand, are absolutely fine!

“And for groups, take a circle, not a row – so you’re not shouting down a line. It’s just about finding ways not to disturb everyone else.”

Johnny suggested that brief calls around the pool using headphones are acceptable. However, anything on loudspeaker, such as music, is strictly prohibited, and video calls are a definite no-go. He advised to listen to music or conduct long phone calls in a private place away from your fellow sunbathers.

Johnny also quipped that he doesn’t want to hear someone’s ‘life story’ while they’re on a deckchair. While others might want to listen to music, Johnny said that most people want some peace and quiet.

He recommended that at hotels with multiple pools, parents should ensure their children stay within the designated children’s pool area and avoid venturing into the adult section.

Even adults who opt for a swim in the adult pool should refrain from causing any disturbance or splashing.

Johnny stated: “I want peace and quiet – when I’m ready for kids, I’ll sit by the kids pool. And no matter which pool, if you can see people lay down with books, don’t splash around too much.”

He also advised careful use of umbrellas to ensure they only shade the user and not others.

His final rule, which he stressed should never be broken, is against wearing skimpy speedo swimming briefs around the pool. While he acknowledges their appropriateness for sporting activities, he maintains they’re unsuitable for relaxing beside the hotel swimming area.

He stated: “No men should be wearing those. We don’t need to see everything! Especially when they bend over to pick up their flip flops. On holiday, by a hotel pool, there’s no need for that.”

Couple’s four-star Spain hotel break ruined by note from ‘sunbed police’

Jo and Martin were given a stern warning by their resort hotel

A holidaying couple were left furious at a hotel’s ‘unfair rules’ when it comes to sunbeds. Jo and Martin travelled to the resort town of Salou, near Barcelona, Spain, for one week.

But while staying at the four-star, £140-per-night H10 Salauris Palace, the couple were hit with ‘stern warning cards’. After leaving their sunbeds for 30 minutes, they came back to find a warning card left on their towels.

Jo said, “When you leave your sunbed for 30 minutes, yet others leave theirs for two plus hours and nothing gets done to them.”

She added: “Two-tier sunbed policing at the H10 Salauris Palace, Salou.”

The clip went viral on TikTok with 235,000 views and dozens of comments. One local said, “Thirty minutes? Hardly time to go for lunch before you need to come back.”

“At least somewhere with rules with sunbeds though, but probably should be after one hour,” added another. Jess joked: “I would place it on someone else’s.”

Jo, who jetted from Belfast International Airport, near where they live, also shared a video of the hotel’s sunbeds appearing to be fully reserved early in the morning.

She advised others: “Unless you get down to the pool at 6 am, you won’t get a good location for your lounger.” One follower said: “We are in a five-star in Lanzarote and despite rules saying no allocating sun loungers, most have towels on by 8 am.”

Pete suggested: “Just move them.” Regina added: “Go somewhere a bit nicer than Salou, then problem solved.”

Jo, known as ‘Grump’ online, also complained about holidaymakers using large pegs to pin down their towel on a windy day. She fumed: “What is it with these giant pegs on sunbeds that annoyed me so much?

“We survived without these for years before!”

However, many of her followers disagreed. One follower said: “Nahhh, they’re amazing. Best fiver I ever spent. Mine are watermelons.”

Camille added: “They are actually quite handy, loved mine, didn’t have to keep fixing the towel!” Andie remarked, “I have watermelon and flamingo ones, which makes your sunbed look quite pretty.”

The H10 Salauris Palace has been approached for comment.

‘People call me selfish for reserving sunbed on holiday but I got last laugh’

A British tourist who reserved sunbeds on holiday before heading off for breakfast has hit out at critics who call her ‘selfish’, as she claims there’s nothing wrong with it

The debate over whether it’s socially acceptable to put your towel down on a sunbed before you’re ready to use it has been ongoing for years. Every summer, videos are shared on social media of tourists racing down to their hotel swimming pool to dump towels and bags on sunbeds at the crack of dawn.

Many of these holidaymakers then leave the pool to go back to bed, have breakfast, or even do some sightseeing, but staking their claim on a sunbed means no one else can use it. However, one British tourist has defended this practice, insisting it’s not “selfish” to reserve a spot by the pool.

Rachel McGuigan and her husband, David, were on holiday in Turkey when they decided to put towels down on a couple of poolside beds to reserve them while they went off and had breakfast in their hotel.

The woman, from York, posted a video of her holiday on TikTok and was baffled by the backlash she got for showing herself reserving the sunbeds.

One person had commented on her video: “Just throw the towels in the pool. It’s not allowed to do this in most hotels and resorts.” And another had written: “I just remove them if they’re full. I don’t care, and the hotel doesn’t care.”

Rachel, who was holidaying at a resort in Fethiye, west of Antalya, said: “I just thought it was crazy that people were so upset about leaving a towel for half an hour to go for breakfast. They accused me of being selfish and all sorts.”

To try to make light of the situation, Rachel then uploaded a second video that appeared to show her leaving towels on a sunbed at 5.30am before going on a series of excursions that lasted until bedtime.

The video was a joke, and Rachel didn’t really reserve a sunbed all day without using it. However, it highlighted exactly how divisive this topic is, as her comments were flooded with people who believed she really had kept others from using the beds.

One person wrote: “So you reserved the beds and didn’t use them, but wouldn’t let anyone else use them? Have you ever thought that you may be the problem?”

Another added: “You go on holiday for a rest, but end up getting up early like you do at home, just to put towels out. Hotels are not for me, that’s why I Airbnb. Not having a go, just saying.”

However, Rachel has insisted that people are taking her videos too literally. She said the resort wasn’t full when they visited, so they were never taking sunbeds from other people who wanted them.

She said: “After the first time, I thought it would be funny to play up to it. It was a joke and I didn’t expect anyone to take it seriously, but I ended up opening a can of worms about sunbed reservations!

“We went to The Residence in Fethiye for two weeks in May for the second year running. There wasn’t a lack of sunbeds, so putting our towels down before going for breakfast wasn’t an issue for anyone. I was surprised with everyone commenting about it.”

The woman also admitted that it can be “annoying” when some tourists leave their towels on sunbeds for “hours on end”. However, she noted she doesn’t think it’s a problem when it’s “only for half an hour”.
