Yet this scene of deprivation is just yards from the picturesque seafront of South Shields, with a stunning stretch of golden sands and a recently regenerated promenade.
This weekend 60,000 athletes will cross the finish line of the Great North Run, running a mile along the coastline at Sandhaven Beach, after competing the gruelling race from Newcastle.
But beyond the funfair, restaurants and elegant Victorian park close to sands, the rundown streets tell a story of years of neglect and residents speak of a dark underbelly of crime, alcoholism and drug taking.
Steven Smith was once a successful painter and decorator but is now a self-confessed alcoholic desperately trying to get sober.
We speak to him at the town’s transport interchange, dubbed “P***head Corner” due to its popularity among drinkers.
The 42-year-old said: “Having the Great North Run is all well and good but the crime rate is diabolical.
“I got beat up just last night. It was for no reason at all. I was walking through the row of shops in the centre and I ended up in hospital. I woke up there.
“There were three lads and they jumped me for nothing. They were probably trying to steal from me but it knocked me out.
“I’m walking and talking and that’s the main thing, but it’s not nice. They did it because they are a***holes, and it didn’t surprise me to be honest.
“South Shields is getting worse for it. The town was given some money a while ago but it hasn’t been spent wisely.
We live in UK ‘gang capital’ where anywhere beginning with ‘P’ is no-go zone
“I don’t take drugs but I’m an alcoholic trying to ween myself off.
“The other day I walked around the corner and saw someone smoking a crack pipe in front of kids.”
Steven believes the town’s younger population are at risk of falling into the same trap.

He added: “I had some kids ask me last week to go in the shop for them to buy drink. They couldn’t have been older than 13 or 14.
“I told them I wasn’t going to do it. I don’t want to encourage anyone to drink. It ruins lives.”

Damning data from the Office of National Statistics speaks of an alcohol crisis engulfing the town and the surrounding area.
Across 2022 to 2023, 777 per 100,000 people in South Tyneside were admitted to hospital for an alcohol-related reason. The figure was sky high compared to the rate of 475 across England as a whole.
During the same time period, 62 per 100,000 under 18s were admitted as a result of consuming booze, while the England rate stood at just 26.
The number of people suffering from alcoholic liver disease in South Tyneside was also nearly double the national rate. There were 304 per 100,000 in the region, compared to 156 in England.
By mid-morning, groups of men and women eagerly waited outside the town’s pubs ahead of opening time.
Meanwhile, a gaunt couple were handed a package by a furtive-looking man before rushing from the bustle of the interchange.

Ex-McDonald’s worker Chloe Mycock used to dread taking breaks during shifts at the nearby fast food restaurant due to unsavoury characters loitering outside.
Chloe, now 21, said: “Alcoholism is a major issue. People are always on drugs giving you abuse when you walk past.
“Even if you have a child with you, they do it all the time. Groups of kids go through the bus station on bikes and they will harass you without a care.
“One hundred per cent it makes me wary of going outside on my own.
“I used to work at McDonald’s and I would come and sit outside on my breaks to get some fresh air. But there would be crowds of people outside and it made me feel unsafe.
“This was during the day so I definitely would not feel safe coming out at night-time.
“I think a lot of these people come from certain parts on the outskirts of the town and they congregate together in the centre.”

A recent BBC study ranked a third of the neighbourhoods in South Tyneside among the most deprived in the country.
The child poverty crisis was deemed so severe the council recently announced a four-point plan in a desperate bid to reduce levels.
In 2020 to 2021, around 39 per cent of children in the South Tyneside area were living in poverty according to council data.
Hundreds of thousands of spectators will flock to the town to watch the competitors finish the 42nd Great North Run, which was founded in 1981, when just 12K took part.
The event was masterminded by former Olympic medallist Brendan Foster who wanted to create a fun run in his home region. Mo Farah dubbed the 2013 race his favourite ever, despite not winning, due to the tremendous support from the sidelines.
One woman, who didn’t want to be named, said: “The Great North Run is great for the area but people only ever see the nicer part of South Shields at the coast when it’s on TV.
“I don’t think the people who come here for the run will to rush to return.
“People used to come to this area to live but now they try and get out because there’s nothing here.
“Kids these days hang around on their bikes outside of McDonald’s and people don’t feel safe.

“Child poverty is definitely an issue in the town. A lot of the younger generation don’t go on to higher education.
“If they’re not lucky enough to grow up in a nicer area, they often get stuck in a poverty cycle.
“There aren’t many jobs and people have to travel elsewhere.
“The foodbank in nearby Hebburn gets really busy.

Sarah Wytcherley, a 40-year-old warehouse worker, said: “Crowds of intoxicated people gather in the town all of the time.
“They sit outside the bus interchange and that’s not what people want to see when they’re visiting the town for the first time.
“It has always been a problem with Shields as far as I’m aware. It doesn’t look very nice.”
One worker at the interchange believes police have been making an effort to move on the hoards of drunks.
He said: “It has been bad. It is has gone downhill as a whole. You see them spiced out of their heads and it puts fear into people.
“There was an incident not long ago where a kid on a bike hurt a disabled guy. It doesn’t look good for town at all.”

Councillors say they are working to tackle inequalitiesCredit: North News and Pictures
Cllr Tracey Dixon, Leader of South Tyneside Council told The Sun: “The Great North Run showcases the beauty and spirit of our borough.
“But behind the scenes, we’re working every day to make sure that spirit is felt in every neighbourhood – tackling inequality, improving safety, and creating opportunity for all.
“We’ve never shied away from the challenges some of our communities face and we have worked hard to tackle them head on, targeting our support to make things fairer across the borough and redress inequalities.
“We know that issues like child poverty and alcohol-related harm have a real impact on people’s lives, and that’s why we’ve taken bold, proactive steps to address them.
“We’ve launched the North East’s first Child Poverty Strategy, bringing together partners across the region to take coordinated action — from working closely with schools and providing baby boxes to new parents to helping parents with the costs of school uniforms, school meals and holiday activities.
“We’re also refreshing our Alcohol Strategy to confront the borough’s high rates of alcohol-related deaths. This includes improving access to support services, challenging cultural norms around drinking, and tackling health inequalities head-on.

Councillors hope the relocation of South Tyneside College into the town centre, will breathe new life into the placeCredit: North News and Pictures
“To tackle long-term challenges, we’re investing in both our places and our people. Our regeneration plans go beyond the seafront — they’re about creating opportunity across the borough.
“The relocation of South Tyneside College into the town centre, backed by millions in external funding, will breathe new life into South Shields.
“Through the Community Regeneration Partnership, we’re also delivering real improvements in Hebburn, Jarrow and beyond. Programmes like South Tyneside Works and regional skills initiatives are helping residents access training and support.
“And by attracting major employers, we’re creating jobs and helping local people step into them.”
Superintendent Lisa Laverick, of Northumbria Police, said: “Alongside our partner organisations, we strive to make South Tyneside as safe as possible a place for people to live, work and visit.
“As a Force, we fully understand the detrimental impact that crime can have on the lives of residents and always aim to tackle these issues head on using a range of tactics.
“We carry out a number of proactive operations during each year, including Project Shield patrols which aim to reduce anti-social behaviour and serious violence incidents while also engaging with our communities to retain and build their trust in us.
“We also run the Safer Transport Northumbria initiative which allows commuters to raise any issues while using public transport with us, while our dedicated Metro Unit regularly patrols the Metro network to identify any criminality and take the appropriate action.
“This has helped us to achieve a 19 per cent fall in the number of recorded ASB incidents in South Tyneside in the past year, and our focus remains on improving this even further.
“Our teams do their utmost to build on our ever-growing intelligence picture so that we can target offenders and get them before the courts to face justice.
“As ever, we rely on the support and assistance of our community so please continue to work with us by providing information on crime or suspicious activity if you become aware of it in your neighbourhood.
“Together, we can keep South Tyneside the welcoming borough it is.”
A MAN tried to kill his wife using a “murder kit” in a “brutal and ferocious attack”.

The horror, which also saw the victim strangled with an exercise band and knifed 15 times, unfolded inside her Rochdale home.
Khan had come to the property under the guise of collecting his belongings.
But instead he took with him weapons, bleach and white spirit, with the plan to murder his victim.
She was eventually rescued when her family arrived and her brother broke into the house.
He restrained Khan, who was “smirking”, as his wife lay fighting for her life.
The terrified family members tried to lock him in the garage but he escaped.
Witnesses reported seeing him dump his “murderous kit” before cops later detained him.
He callously asked officers what the sentence was for murder and how long he’d be in prison.
Prosecuting, Chloe Fordham, told Minshull Street Crown Court: “During the attack, she was pleading with the defendant not to kill her, and telling him to think of their children, saying if he killed her, they would not have their parents.
“The defendant didn’t seem to care. He pulled out a hammer and hit her hard on the head. He then tried to strangle her.”
Schoolboy, 15, charged with murder after teen, 17, stabbed to death outside McDonald’s in front of horrified public
In a victim impact statement, the woman said: “The calculated and brutal nature of the attempted murder by my husband has left significant physical injuries and deep lasting psychological trauma.
“This was not a crime of impulse, but deliberate, premeditated and planned.
“This was not an attack by a stranger, but by the person I should have been able to trust the most, somebody who was meant to protect me.”
Addressing Khan, she said: “The only request I ask is that you declare the words ‘I divorce you’ in front of my family, to release me from this marriage. I hope after all I have endured, you can grant me this freedom.”
The victim, who shares a son with her abuser, said the attack has also scarred their child.
Their eldest son had said in the statement: “The last time you hurt Mama you said you would never do it again. I don’t understand why you have now.
“If you killed her, we would be orphans. I never want to see you again.”
Defending, Ian McMeekin said: “He knows himself that the behaviour was inexplicable and inexcusable.”
Khan was sentenced to 27-and-a-half years behind bars for attempted murder.
The judge told him: “This was a murderous kit you had bought specifically – the knife to attack her and the bleach to clean up afterwards.”
Khan, of Bernard Street, Rochdale, was jailed for 27-and-a-half years.
He will spend an extra five years on licence and made the subject of a life-long restraining order for life.

IF you took a quick glance at this snail, you’d swear he was just like any other.
In fact, even if you stare at this creature you likely won’t spot his rare anatomical problem.
2
Ned the snail has garnered international attention as scientists set out to find him a mateCredit: AP
However, this issue is said to be “ruining his love life” and condemning him to a “chaste and sterile” existence, according to scientists.
Officially dubbed Ned the snail, this little guy looks like a stereotypical snail, complete with two antennae and a brown shell.
But there is a prominent problem with his appearance, though most people won’t spot it.
Peel your eyes and examine this “shellebrity” closely – can you spot his off feature?
This common garden snail was discovered by New Zealand nature lover and author Giselle Clarkson.
Something off
She noticed that “something looked off” and said she even wondered if Ned was a different species.
So, have you spotted what it is that makes Ned so special?
If you’re still scratching your head, we recommend paying particular attention to his shell.
While Ned’s rare condition may not register to you, experts have launched an international campaign to find him an equally-rare mate.
You may even be able to help – but first, why not give it one last go to spot the odd feature?
What you see first in this mind-bending optical illusion reveals if you are an optimist or a pessimist
Anyone who has ever seen a snail knows that it has a “whorl” – a pattern of spirals or concentric circles – on the side of its shell.
However, nature lovers know that this feature can only be found on one side, usually the right.
Well you guessed it, Ned’s coils are on the wrong side of his shell.
While a large majority of snails have the spiral on the right side, around one in 40,000 have the spiral on the left side.
Snails are asymmetrical, meaning they fit together like a jigsaw during “face-to-face” mating.
How can optical illusions and brainteasers help me?
Engaging in activities like solving optical illusions and brainteasers can have many cognitive benefits as it can stimulate various brain regions.
Some benefits include:
Cognitive stimulation: Engaging in these activities challenges the brain, promoting mental agility and flexibility.
Problem-solving skills: Regular practice enhances analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Memory improvement: These challenges often require memory recall and can contribute to better memory function.
Creativity: They encourage thinking outside the box, fostering creativity and innovative thought processes.
Focus and attention: Working on optical illusions and brainteasers requires concentration, contributing to improved focus.
Stress relief: The enjoyable nature of these puzzles can act as a form of relaxation and stress relief.
International attention
This means a typical right-coiled snail and left-coiled snail such as Ned, who is named after famous leftie Ned Flanders from The Simpsons, won’t quite fit together properly when facing.

A TEENAGER who stabbed a 16-year-old boy to death in a street attack can now be pictured for the first time.
L’Avian Peniston was just 14 when he killed 16-year-old Kennie Carter by stabbing him in the chest in Stretford, Greater Manchester, just over three years ago.

The teen was found guilty in July last year for the “act of revenge” that killed Kennie.
Manchester Crown Court handed Peniston the equivalent of a life sentence, required to serve a minimum of 17 years in prison.
The boy could not be named due reporting restrictions at the time of the murder case as he was still 16.
However, as he has now turned 18, Peniston can be named for the first time.
This is despite applications to lift reporting restrictions following his conviction, which was rejected by the judge.
Young Kennie was walking home while on the phone to his older brother when Peniston – who was with a group of boys – pounced on him.
The boys had travelled three miles ‘looking for revenge’ after an argument with Kennie’s friends the day before.
Four teens reportedly travelled by tram to the block of flats they knew Kennie and his friends typically hang out.
They stole three bikes, where a witness heard them shout: “This is revenge.”
Kennie was inside the block of flats and headed home after hearing the boys were nearby, but passed by them on the road.
Murder probe launched after teenage boy, 16, stabbed to death in Manchester as family left ‘devastated’
One of the boys in the group was heard shouting to Kennie: “You’re the one who had backed that pole innit.”
“Nah nah it weren’t me bro,” Kennie was heard to reply.
Peniston then killed the 16-year-old boy with a single stab wound to the chest, before running away from the scene with the group.
They did not give Kennie medical assistance or call an ambulance, and later abandoned the stolen bikes.
Kennie was found lying face down at 7pm after calling his brother to say: “Oh, they’ve stabbed me in the heart bro.”
During the sentencing last year, the judge Mr Justice Goose, said: “This was yet another killing of a young person with a knife against the backdrop of gang violence.
“Young males carrying knives in public in readiness to threaten and kill others is becoming all too common in our cities.
“The tragedy is that not only does it destroy the lives of the victims and their families, but also those who commit the offence.”
Kennie’s mum Joan said she had seen the boy “laugh and smirk” throughout a court hearing.
She said: “This shows me he had absolutely no remorse and broke my heart even more.
“No penalty or what the court can award will ever be enough in my eyes.
A heartbreaking statement was also read out on Joan’s behalf by her sister in court: “My son was chased down in the street and killed on his way home.
“At the time of his death he was just 16.
“For the last seven weeks we have had to listen to evidence of what happened to our son in graphic detail.
“How can we put into words how his death and the last two and a half years has affected us?”
“It is not just Kennie that died on 22 January 2022.
“Our whole family has been destroyed by this mindless violence.”
She added: “They have taken away our Kennie from his loving family and our lives are destroyed forever.”
Three other teens were also jailed after being found guilty of manslaughter.
Latif Ferguson, who already turned 18 but was 15 at the time, was sentenced to five years’ detention in a young offenders’ institution.
Two 16-year-olds were sentenced to four years’ detention following a lengthy trial at Manchester Crown Court.
Six other teenagers, then aged between 15 and 19, were found not guilty of charges related to Kennie’s death

In CCTV taken inside the Kent shop, the man is first shown re-positioning the charity box.
His eyes remain fixated on the money pot as he appears to detach it from its chains.
Seconds later, he lifts up the poppy-shaped box and looks to stuff it under his Nike jacket before calmly picking up a magazine.
Reacting to the outrageous footage online, some blasted the alleged crook’s actions as “vile”.
One fumed: “Scumbag. No matter how tough things are, never steal from those who need it more than you.
Another blasted: “It’s disgusting that charity boxes now need chains just to keep them safe.”
A third continued: “Absolute vile creature – hope karma bites.”
KentPolice confirmed a probe had been launched following the alleged theft.
In a statement, the force urged anyone with information or who recognised the suspect to come forward.
Locals residents suggested that the yob might be known in the community.

“This achievement would not have been possible without our dedicated Poppy Appeal organisers, volunteers, partner organisations, and the generosity of the general public.

Conwy Council has since confirmed that one of its recycling lorries was involved in the horrific incident.
Daphne was tragically killed when she was hit by the large council recycling collection truck whilst standing on a narrow side street.
Following the crash a man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, he was then released under investigation.
Daphne studied at Cambridge and was trained as a scientist, she went on to teach at several high schools and was head of Chemistry at a prestigious Birmingham girls school.
Her family have now offered a heartbroken tribute to her as she is pictured for the first time since the tragic collision.
Her family said: “Our Mum, Daphne, was a bright shining light of love at the centre of our family. She was a caring Mam-gu who was always full of concern and pride for her children and her grown-up grandchildren.
“A woman of faith who gave so much of her time to looking after others, she has always been an active volunteer at church.
“Daphne was a member of many community groups and spent much time visiting and writing to anyone she thought might appreciate support.
“She cared for people of all ages and especially enjoyed helping with small children at the church Sunday school, and visiting “the elderly” who often included those younger than herself!
“She was incredibly hard-working. Her children remember her juggling being a full-time mother, helping at church and teaching by correspondence-course late into the night when they were small.
“She always had a very strong work ethic and this attitude continued even into her retirement.”
Daphne was mother of Mary Stallard, Bishop of Llandaff and a former Assistant Bishop ofBangor.
Her husband, who sadly passed away five years ago, was the Reverend Charles Stallard.
The couple remained active together and reportedly spent Daphne’s 80th birthday climbing Snowdon together.
The couple are survived by their three children, Mary, Andrew and John.
Daphne’s grieving family added: “Her sudden loss has come as such a shock to us all.
“It is a comfort to us that we believe that she is reunited now with her beloved Charles, and both are safe in God’s care.”
An investigation into the horror collision that killed Daphne is underway.
North Wales Police is probing the incident and are asking anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.

A CRUEL carer splurged £10,000 she stole from a patient’s dementia-stricken wife on fake tan, KFC and cigarettes.
Danielle Houghton helped herself to the 91-year-old’s bank card while she was meant to be looking after her bed-bound husband.

Houghton, 32, blew the cash on trips to tanning shops, gambling sites and Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions.
She also spent it at Sports Direct and KFC, and used it to buy petrol, cigarettes and alcohol over a three-month period.
Her scheming was only exposed three months later when the victim’s children noticed the transactions and alerted police.
Houghton has now been jailed for two years and nine months after pleading guilty to theft and fraud by false representation.
Sadly, the victim and her husband passed away before they could see Houghton brought to justice.
Preston Crown Court heard the heartless thief was meant to be caring for the 92-year-old man when she targeted his wife.
Footage showed Houghton at various stores and cash machines spending the stolen money.
The woman’s son said in a victim impact statement: “‘Something bad has been done to me, but I cannot remember what it is…’
“That heartbreaking phrase was my frail, vulnerable, and deeply upset Mum’s constant refrain.
“‘Something bad has been done to me’. She carried that desolate anxiety to her grave, unable to quietly enjoy the tranquillity of her home and garden in her final months, haunted by a distress she couldn’t resolve.
“Danielle Houghton’s criminal actions have also regrettably tarnished the reputation of care providers in a sector already facing immense challenges.”
Houghton stole a total of £9,773 with much of it withdrawn from cash machines, and tried to take a further £800.
DC Peter Bennett of Lancaster Criminal Investigation Department said “Houghton’s selfish actions against a vulnerable lady are despicable.
“I welcome the prison sentence handed down to her which not only punishes her actions, but sends out a clear message to others who might be tempted to offended in a similar manner.
“Their mother died not knowing that the person responsible for taking half her life savings had faced justice, and their father also died during the course of the investigation, which increases the suffering of the family.”

Morgan attacked Lenny, 33, outside of a gym in on February 8, 2024.
Lenny, a father of three, worked at HMP Altcourse and had previously confiscated Morgan’s phone while he was incarcerated.
Upon taking the phone, he discovered that Morgan has having an affair with a prison guard – prompting the 35-year-old to begin plotting his murder.
Lenny was shot six times by Morgan and was left for dead.
Today, Morgan was jailed for life with a minimum term of 45 years.
The terrifying shooting was caught on film, by a CCTV camera near to the gym.
In the video, Lenny can be seen leaving the building with four others while a sinister man – dressed in a high-vis jacket – approaches.
The gunman can be seen hiding behind a car, before calmly raising his gun and opening fire.
Six shots can be heard before the shooter hops onto an electric bike and heads for a getaway van.
Morgan was found guilty of murder, following a lengthy trial at Preston Crown Court.

Man, 50, killed in drive-by shooting outside petrol station as cops release CCTV in hunt for car ‘with false plates’
Meanwhile, his friend Anthony Cleary, 29, was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter in court.
Jurors heard that Morgan had been having an affair with prison officer Sarah Williams and that he had offered Lenny £1,500 to “lose” the phone which contained evidence of the affair.
Four years later, after Morgan left prison
After that, Morgan began issuing “powerfully made” threats to stop the information getting out.
At the time, Morgan allegedly said: “I’ll bide my time, but I promise I will get you.”
Four days after the phone was seized, Lenny phoned 101 to tell police that a car had been “sat outside my house all weekend”.
When asked by the operator about who was threatening him, Lenny replied: “Elias Morgan. He’s described my family and me to a tee, described my house.”
After Morgan was found guilty of killing Lenny, Wendy Logan – deputy head of CPS North West’s complex casework unit – described the shooter as “cold-blooded” and evil.
She said: “Lenny Scott was a devoted father who had bravely upheld his duty when working as a prison officer by reporting an illicit phone he found in Elias Morgan’s cell in 2020.
“He did so in the face of attempts at bribery and also threats and intimidation by Morgan – and his commitment to public service will not be forgotten.
“Morgan – driven by revenge and believing he was above the law – carried out a cold-blooded murder.
“We were determined to deliver justice and see Morgan brought to book for his evil crime – and our case set out in clear terms how he planned and carried out his callous act.
“Our thoughts remain with Lenny’s family – particularly his three young children – and all those who cared for him as they deal with his loss.”
