CBS’ recent cancellation of the popular The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is yet another case of heavy‑handed political and corporate meddling in the role of media in the US. It occurred just three days after the comedian and talk show host criticised CBS’s parent company Paramount for settling a multimillion‑dollar lawsuit with Trump, with Colbert calling that settlement “a bribe”.

In its announcement, CBS stated it will end The Late Show after May 2026 due to a declining audience, marking the end of a 33‑year run for the live‑audience series.

But, lower Nielsen ratings or not, the timing of Paramount’s move to cancel one of its signature series may itself prove that the decision was about more than profit. It cannot be ignored that within a few days of both moves, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) finally approved the Skydance‑Paramount merger after months of stalling, an $8bn deal that will add to the mountain of monopolistic moves in US media.

“This is pure cowardice,” David Letterman, The Late Show’s previous host from 1993 to 2015, said of Paramount’s recent decisions to cancel the show and settle the Trump lawsuit.

The US news media’s never‑ending coverage of everything Trump over the past decade and the constant back‑and‑forth over his politics, policies and practices have played a significant role in its decline. As the US lurches ever closer towards autocracy, the Fourth Estate has increasingly taken on the role of stenographer, with its normalisation of lies, gossip, craven policies and corruption as “disinformation” and “misinformation”.

But the age of Trump is just the tip of the iceberg. The combination of constant realignment to ingratiate media corporations with the political class, along with their monopolisation of media in the US over the past 45 years, has simply devastated the field. This retrenchment has severely skewed news coverage and destroyed the idea of a free press.

The landscape of US media began evolving with the gradual deregulation of both media ownership and the scope of editorial freedom in the 1980s. After 40 years of what was once the Fairness Doctrine in US media law (requiring multimedia broadcasters to air opposing views on topics of national importance, not just one perspective), the FCC voted to abolish the requirement in 1987. This came after Congress had failed to override President Ronald Reagan’s veto of their attempt to codify the doctrine in a bill. Attempts to re‑establish the Fairness Doctrine have failed over the years, including the Restore the Fairness Doctrine Act that the now Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard sponsored in 2019. That bill never made it to the House floor for a vote.

In a truly bipartisan effort during the 1990s, many of the remaining regulations that protected US media from monopolisation and the influence of billionaires and mega‑corporations were dismantled. The lobbyist‑influenced Telecommunications Act of 1996 made its way through Congress with overwhelming support, with only 16 “No” votes out of 430 in the House of Representatives, and five voting “No” out of 96 in the Senate.

The deregulations, intended to foster more competition between media corporations and their multimedia platforms, actually did the opposite by extending media monopolisation. Between 1983 and 2015, the number of corporations that collectively owned 90 percent of the entire US media market fell from “more than 50 to just six companies”, including books, newspapers, magazines, mobile and cable television, internet and music, films and professional athletic teams. In the years since, between Viacom’s ownership of CBS and Paramount and Amazon’s huge foray into streaming services and multimedia productions, five megacorporations now control 90 percent of all US media.

The Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch became a key figure in the monopolisation of US media in all its forms, buying stakes in the New York Post and founding the tabloid paper Star. In 1985, the FCC approved the deal that allowed Murdoch to buy 20th Century Fox and acquire Fox broadcast stations. This occurred after Murdoch had become a naturalised US citizen, as federal regulations at that time limited foreign ownership of and investment in broadcasting. Eleven years later, and just months after the Telecommunications Act of 1996’s passage, Murdoch and media executive Roger Ailes founded Fox News under the ironically deceptive slogan “Fair and Balanced”. With the Fairness Doctrine gone and the need to provide balanced media coverage removed, Fox News’ decidedly biased far‑right slant was deliberate, built solely for profit. “People don’t want to be informed, they want to feel informed,” the late Ailes apparently said more than once in justifying Fox News’ approach to news coverage.

In recent years, with billionaires buying major news outlets like The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal and dictating editorial decisions, Americans have long lost trust in the Fourth Estate. Monopolisation and the business pressures that have come with it have led to “fewer journalists, thinner reporting, and increasingly desperate advertising content” over the past three decades. Combined with the rise of social media over television and internet media sites as the number one way Americans get their news (54 percent vs 50 percent and 48 percent, respectively), this trend is telling. There are no signs that monopolisation and biased, fact‑reduced and fact‑free media coverage will stop any time soon.

Murdoch’s approach of using deregulation to build a monopoly and usher in the age of fact‑free journalism helped set off this buying frenzy, with profit prioritised over fairness every step of the way. By the end of the 1980s, the reign of conservative and far‑right radio talk shows had begun, with the late Rush Limbaugh leading the pack with his nationally syndicated The Rush Limbaugh Show. His constant barrage of racism, sexism, queerphobia and other hyper‑masculine talking points became an echo chamber for about 15 million listeners for the next 30 years.

Although centre‑left radio programming like Air America made minor inroads in the 2000s, progressive ventures have often fizzled out. They have frequently lacked sufficient financial support and political protection in an increasingly monopolised and ideologically skewed media world. At the height of MSNBC’s “Lean Forward” days, when critics saw its merely centrist political news coverage between 2010 and 2016 as “liberal”, its executives denied MSNBC was the leftist equivalent of Fox News. Phil Griffin, who ran MSNBC from 2008 through early 2021, once said, “No. We don’t put out talking points all day” like Fox News. “Corporations are … like sharks. They just move toward the money. That’s all they do,” one former executive for the news organisation said. In 2016, eugenicist tech billionaire Peter Thiel essentially destroyed the progressive tabloid Gawker. Furious that Gawker had outed him as queer in 2007, Thiel helped the late wrestler Hulk Hogan win a $140m lawsuit against Gawker for its publication of his sex tape.

It is often said that good journalism reflects the happenings of the world like a mirror, without bias and with every effort to expose the truth behind news events. If this is truly the definition of what makes good journalism, then US journalism has been staring into a mirror with a multitude of fractures for decades. In 2025, it is not just that many Americans do not believe in the media they consume or only believe the news when it fits their personal narrative. Many in the US know that the nation’s media regularly peddles lies, half‑truths and gossip in a never‑ending search for easy profit, all while dumbing down their consumers.

Reporting on the spread of autocratic rule, calling out complicity in genocide, or interrogating the ethics of billionaires and mega‑corporations in a monopolised media world? Any efforts towards fairness and truth can easily cost anyone in the media their job, or worse, even someone as influential as Stephen Colbert.

A travel expert has advised against sitting in one particular seat whenever you’re flying.

While that back corner window spot might look appealing when you’re booking (quiet, out of the way, with a view) it could actually be the worst choice you make for your journey.

Dawn Morwood, co-director of Cheap Deals Away, knows exactly which seats to steer clear of. “People often think the last-row window seat will be peaceful, but it’s actually a recipe for a miserable flight,” she explains.

That back corner window seat might seem like prime real estate when you’re scrolling through the seat map, but it’s actually where comfort goes to die. The last-row window seat, particularly those positioned near the rear lavatories or galley, sets the perfect conditions for a series of sleep-disrupting problems.

“The biggest issue is the constant foot traffic. You’ve got passengers queuing for the loo right beside you, flight attendants rushing back and forth with trolleys, and people stretching their legs in the aisle. It never stops,” Dawn said.

The problems don’t end there. These seats typically have limited or no recline because there’s a wall directly behind them. On a 10-hour flight to Asia or an eight-hour journey to the States, that upright position can put extra strain on your back and make proper sleep nearly impossible.

The galley area stays brightly lit throughout most of the flight as crew prepare meals and clean up. That harsh fluorescent glow seeps through even the best eye masks, constantly disrupting your natural sleep cycles.

“The noise level back there is incredible. You’ve got the constant hum of equipment, crew chatting during their breaks, and the non-stop flush of toilets. It’s like trying to sleep next to a motorway service station,” Dawn continued.

The smell factor shouldn’t be ignored either. Being positioned near the lavatories means dealing with unpleasant odours, especially on longer flights when the facilities get heavy use.

The best seats are typically in the middle section of the aircraft, away from both the busy front galley and the chaotic rear area. “Look for seats around rows 6-15 on most wide-body aircraft,” advises Dawn. “You’re far enough from the action but still have easy access to facilities when needed.”

Never book within three rows of any lavatory. The queues, smells, and constant activity will make your journey miserable. Check the aircraft’s seat map carefully before selecting.

“If you’re flying eastbound for a daytime arrival, pick a seat on the right side of the plane to avoid the sun streaming through your window during the final hours. For westbound flights, sit on the left side,” Dawn said.

While exit row seats offer extra legroom, they come with restrictions. You can’t store anything under the seat in front during takeoff and landing, and these seats often don’t recline.

Dawn Morwood, co-director of Cheap Deals Away, said: “Your seat choice can make or break a long-haul flight, and I’ve seen too many holidaymakers arrive at their destination exhausted because they picked poorly. That back corner window seat might look appealing on the booking page, but you’ll regret it the moment you try to get comfortable.

“Poor seat selection not only impacts your flight, but your entire trip. If you can’t sleep properly on the plane, you’ll arrive with worse jet lag, feeling cranky and tired. Your first few days of holiday are essentially written off while you recover. When you’re paying thousands for a dream getaway, why would you sabotage it with a bad seat choice?

“I always tell my customers that spending a bit extra on seat selection is one of the best investments you can make. A good night’s sleep at 35,000 feet means you land refreshed and ready to enjoy every moment of your holiday. It’s worth every penny.”

Reigning Strictly Come Dancing champion Dianne Buswell shares dreams for the future with her long-term love Joe Sugg and their plans to start a family

Dancing is at the centre of everything for Dianne Buswell – it’s where she made her name and found the love of her life. But the Strictly Come Dancing professional says she’s prepared to waltz away for a while to start a family with partner, podcaster and YouTuber Joe Sugg.

The pair met on the 2018 series of the BBC show after being paired together and romance blossomed away from the bright lights and the cameras once their stint had ended.

Dianne, 36, has opened up about their family plans as she shares what made her fall for Joe, 33. “It wasn’t until the show ended that we realised we missed each other’s company a lot – our relationship went from there,” she explained.

“We always got on, he was so funny to me, and I loved how creative he was. We’ve always wanted kids, it’s just finding the right time. I don’t feel worried about taking time out from dancing, I just don’t see the point in worrying. When everything aligns, it will happen. I have to have that vision. I like to practise manifestation, I’m quite spiritual.”

The couple live in Brighton, where they share a £3.5million mansion. They’ve long been open about their desire to start a family. Dianne recently had to deny suggestions the pair had got engaged after speculation grew online after she was spotted wearing a ring on her wedding finger.

Grilled on Good Morning Britain by Susanna Reid and Ed Balls, she explained how some of her fingers had swollen up after a flight, so she moved rings from her right to her left hand. “I was taking pictures with my family and I put them online so everyone thought I was engaged,” she recalled. “I’m not engaged.”

Joe may not have got down on bended knee, but their relationship is going from strength to strength, with Joe beginning to enjoy some of Dianne’s passions. “Joe laughs at me because I’m always investing in the latest wellness product,” tells Dianne.

“It’s a big passion. I have an ice bath at home. I can get a bit anxious but cold-water therapy calms me down. I’m so proud of Joe – he never knew about any of this wellness stuff, but he’s enjoying it. He loves the ice bath. He does it more than me, to be honest.”

Since joining Strictly in 2017, Australian pro dancer Dianne has been putting her body through hours of gruelling rehearsals day after day, so she has to look after herself.

“There’s only so much you can give before you need to recharge,” says Dianne. “In this line of work, we’re giving, giving, giving, because we want people to have the best time, but there comes a point when you need to give yourself time and space. I need moments of quiet and calm.”

A self-confessed “homebody”, Dianne loves a night in as much as a showbiz party. “I’m okay being in my own company. At a party, I’m not the loudest one in the room by any stretch of the imagination.”

She shares her home life with fans on social media – she and Joe have built up a huge following through their daily vlogs. Dianne says it’s helped show people the “real” her. “I always wanted my YouTube channel and the podcast [Winning Isn’t Everything] to be as raw as possible,” she tells Prima magazine.

“First thing in the morning, I’ll vlog and show the real me, who hasn’t been in hours of hair and make-up. It comes with age and becoming more confident in yourself as a person.

“When I was younger, I used to be self-conscious and would never step outside unless I had a full face of make-up on. It’s no longer about looks, it’s about how I feel and what I feel. That’s why I’m so honest – if I can help at least one or two people, then I feel like my job’s done.”

As Strictly’s reigning champion after her historic win with blind comedian Chris McCausland, 48, last year, Dianne is preparing to line up with another celebrity for the new series, with the professional dancers rehearsing already ahead of the show starting in September.

But she and Chris do the Winning podcast together, and she says he changed her outlook on life – and she doesn’t feel as much pressure any more. “I feel just as excited as any other year, and I’ve put no expectations on myself,” she insists.

“Last year taught me it’s not about perfection. I used to think of winning, winning, winning, but the past few years, it hasn’t been about that at all – maybe that comes with age and maturity.

“Chris and I could have left at any point and would have gone thinking we’d won anyway. It doesn’t feel like a competition any more. I taught him a lot, but he taught me just as much.

“Chris has allowed me to be more of the character that I naturally am. I don’t feel pressure to be the world’s best dancer as I get older – you don’t need to be a world champion to be a great Strictly professional. It’s a mixed bag of stuff, like being able to communicate with someone as a teacher.”

She is looking forward to reuniting with friend and fellow pro Amy Dowden, 34, who returned to the show in the last series after breast cancer but had to pull out after a foot injury.

Dianne said: “She’s a tough cookie. I’ve never met anyone who loves dancing so much, she lives and breathes it and for that to be taken away from her for a period was so upsetting. But she is back 100%, thriving and full of life.”

The study, conducted across the UK, revealed the memories Brits treasure most – with events like driving solo, falling in love, and a child’s first day at school all ranking high.

The poll of 2,000 adults also found people in the UK experience around five unforgettable moments each year.

Saying goodbye to a loved one and hearing a child say their first words also made the top 25.

Other standout moments include passing exams, learning to ride a bike, and being told “I love you” for the very first time.

“These simple yet powerful experiences often stay with us for life.

The research was commissioned by Samsung to celebrate the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold7 – its slimmest foldable phone yet, built for capturing life’s biggest (and smallest) memories.

As part of the campaign, the tech giant released a touching poem, Life Unfolds Fast, written by Georgie Jones and narrated by Martin Kemp.

The accompanying film showcases real-life moments from people of all walks of life – and intimate snapshots from Martin’s own family history.

Martin Kemp said: “Some of my life’s greatest memories are those simple moments at home – playing with my kids in the garden, holding Harley and Roman as babies, and singing with my wife in the car.

The majority of adults (76 per cent) said unforgettable experiences shape who we are, while 85 per cent regularly look back at special memories on their phones.

Whether it’s to lift their mood, reflect on happy times, or share with loved ones, phones have become the modern memory box.

In fact, 60 per cent said their digital memories are just as precious as physical keepsakes like photo albums or letters.

But it’s not all picture-perfect. Nearly half of those surveyed admitted they worry about forgetting key life events.

For 46 per cent, the biggest concern is losing memories involving loved ones – such as family milestones or meaningful conversations.

That’s why so many turn to their phones, with 41 per cent using photos and videos to hold onto those treasured experiences.

However, 49 per cent confessed they feel anxious when their phone storage gets full, fearing they might miss capturing something important.

The average Brit replays special videos or looks at meaningful photos about four times a month.

And some are proper memory collectors – with one in eight claiming to have more than 10 hours of footage saved on their phone.

Looking ahead, the most anticipated future milestone is seeing someone close to them achieve something they’ve worked hard for – from graduating to landing a dream job.

Annika Bizon from Samsung said: “Our research shows that over 40 per cent of us take photos and videos for the sole purpose to not forget our best memories.

“It allows you to capture and revisit the memories you never want to forget, feeling their warmth and emotion time and time again.”

The campaign encourages people to reflect on their own milestones – big or small – and not to let life’s most precious moments pass unnoticed.

Because sometimes, it’s not just the big wins we remember most – but the quiet, everyday moments that unfold in between.

Global hunger fell in 2024 for a third straight year, but conflict and climate shocks deepened crises in Africa and the Middle East.

Global hunger levels declined for a third consecutive year in 2024, according to a new United Nations report, as better access to food in South America and India offset deepening malnutrition and climate shocks in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

Around 673 million people, or 8.2 percent of the world’s population, experienced hunger in 2024, down from 8.5 percent in 2023, according to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, jointly prepared by five UN agencies.

The agencies include the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

The agencies said the report focused on chronic, long-term problems and did not fully reflect the impact of acute crises brought on by specific events and wars, including Israel’s war on Gaza.

“Conflict continues to drive hunger from Gaza to Sudan and beyond,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in remarks delivered by video link from a UN food summit in Ethiopia on Monday, adding that “hunger further feeds future instability and undermines peace”.

The WHO has warned that malnutrition in the besieged Palestinian enclave has reached “alarming levels” since Israel imposed a total blockade on March 2.

The blockade was partially lifted in May, but only a trickle of aid has been allowed to enter since then, despite warnings about mass starvation from the UN and aid organisations.

Hunger rate falls in South America, southern Asia

In 2024, the most significant progress was reported in South America and southern Asia, according to the UN report.

In South America, the hunger rate fell to 3.8 percent in 2024 from 4.2 percent in 2023. In southern Asia, it fell to 11 percent from 12.2 percent.

Progress in South America was underpinned by improved agricultural productivity and social programmes, such as school meals, Maximo Torero, the chief economist at the FAO, told news agency Reuters.

In southern Asia, it was mostly due to new data from India showing more people with access to healthy diets.

The overall 2024 hunger numbers were still higher than the 7.5 percent recorded in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hunger more prevalent in Africa

The picture was very different in Africa, where productivity gains were not keeping up with high population growth and the impacts of conflict, extreme weather and inflation.

In 2024, more than one in five people on the continent, or 307 million people, were chronically undernourished, meaning hunger is more prevalent than it was 20 years ago.

According to the current projection, 512 million people in the world may be chronically undernourished in 2030, with nearly 60 percent of them to be found in Africa, the report said.

“We must urgently reverse this trajectory,” said the FAO’s Torero.

A major mark of distress is the number of Africans unable to afford a healthy diet. While the global figure fell from 2.76 billion in 2019 to 2.6 billion in 2024, the number increased in Africa from 864 million to just over one billion during the same period.

That means the vast majority of Africans are unable to eat well on the continent of 1.5 billion people.

Inequalities

The UN report also highlighted “persistent inequalities” with women and rural communities most affected, which widened last year over 2023.

“Despite adequate global food production, millions of people go hungry or are malnourished because safe and nutritious food is not available, not accessible or, more often, not affordable,” it said.

The gap between global food price inflation and overall inflation peaked in January 2023, driving up the cost of diets and hitting low-income nations hardest, the report said.

The report also said that overall adult obesity rose to nearly 16 percent in 2022, from 12 percent in 2012.

Campers usually just try the shoes-off approach when it comes to coming inside, but Richard explains why this rarely works in practice.

“Asking everyone to remove muddy boots sounds good in theory, but you’re still left with wet socks and nowhere clean to put the boots,” he says. “Plus, it’s not exactly comfortable hopping around on one foot in the rain.”

Traditional camping mats often fall short as well. They’re usually too small, absorb water, and can become slippery hazards when wet. Towels, another common solution, quickly become saturated and useless.

“The car boot liner gives you a proper-sized clean zone that stays functional even in the worst weather,” Richard notes. “It’s also easy to rinse off or wipe clean, and it rolls up small when you’re packing up.”

“A simple plastic tablecloth can create an instant clean eating area, and those disposable plastic plates from party shops are more practical than heavy camping crockery.”

Emmerdale has released a spoiler clip for next week that reveals John Sugden targets his brother Robert Sugden, getting Robert’s former enemy Ross Barton involved

A new Emmerdale clips has hinted at what John Sugden will uncover about his brother Robert Sugden next week.

Amid his plan to destroy his brother who is onto his dark crimes, he places a listening device inside his home and soon enough has some dirt on him. It’s not revealed what he finds out, but it seems a new preview has teased what it could be linked to.

John sets up some drama with Robert’s former enemy of sorts Ross Barton. In the clip for next week, airing towards the end of the week and after John’s discovery, Ross is let in on something Robert is hiding.

In the clip John watches Ross as he walks through the village, and then pretends that he’s rushed over to him – while he’s clearly been biding his time. John then fakes “bottling it” as Ross questions what he wants.

Ross looks confused as John suddenly goes to leave, just after stopping him in the village. Ross tells him to spit it out, telling him he can’t rush off after all that and that he clearly has something to tell him.

It’s then that John feigns worry about letting slip what he knows, before telling Ross “he has a right to know” It’s then that he reveals it’s “about his brother” clearly meaning Robert. Ross’ face darkens and he demands answers, asking John: “What’s he done now?”. Robert is often up to no good and causing drama, so of course Ross would expect he’s done something bad, and he wouldn’t be surprised by this either.

John has deliberately targeted Ross as the person to tell whatever it is he knows, knowing how Ross will react towards Robert. But what is it about?

It has to be linked to Ross, otherwise why would John get him involved? Could it be linked to Seb, Robert’s son and Ross’ stepson? Or is it more than likely linked to what happened with new villain Ray just weeks ago?

Ross and his brother Lewis Barton were horrified to find Lewis’ cannabis plants, being harvested at the farm, were stolen. Few people knew about them, with Lewis having specific purposes for the plants.

Mackenzie Boy was initially blamed for the theft, after he told villain Ray about the weed. Mack protested his innocence though, and both Lewis and Ross realised he wasn’t behind it.

Viewers were let in on the twist though, and we saw Robert selling the drugs to Ray having stolen them from Lewis. So is this what John has found out, and is this what he tells Ross?

Spoilers had recently teased Ross was onto Robert and would confront him about it all. Maybe John, and Ross, now have evidence that Robert was to blame. Spoilers for next week revealed Ross would find out John had information about Robert.

There’s also Robert’s lies to Ross’ aunt Moira Dingle about his reasons for buying the land from her. So cold this be what John has uncovered and passed onto Ross, and will Moira learn the truth?

Clarkson’s Farm star Jeremy Clarkson has turned his countryside escapades into a hit TV series – but he has confessed he is still very clueless about some agricultural practices

Jeremy Clarkson may be reaching new levels of fame thanks to his hit documentary series about his Oxfordshire farm – but he has admitted there are aspects of farming that he is still completely clueless about, despite working the land for years.

The 65-year-old TV star previously enjoyed fame as a host of Top Gear on the BBC – before departing the show under a cloud of shame after he punched a producer behind-the-scenes. He then launched rival car show The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime – however this success has been eclipsed by his hugely popular agricultural series, Clarkson’s Farm.

The show follows Jeremy as he endures trials and triumphs as he tries to make a living from his farm – which he named Diddly Squat as he has struggled to make sizeable sales from his crops. But the star appears to be enjoying his challenges – and has even become a spokesperson of British farming, and has turned on the current Labour government over changes to tax rules that risk decimating the UK farming industry.

Jezza has been learning as he goes – and admits there are still many aspects of farming he cannot understand. In a recent column, he explained that he can be confused by the industry – including how animals are turned into food after they are sent to the slaughterhouse.

He writes in the Sunday Times Magazine: “It’s nigh on impossible to deduce which bits are used to make steaks and which are for mincing and whether that bulbous-looking thing is incredibly tasty or a bowel.”

He continued: “But by far and away the most difficult thing would be turning my wheat into bread. This is something that has fascinated me for years because how on earth did anyone figure it out?”

As well as running his farm, Jeremy has opened his Diddly Squat Farm Shop where he sells his home-grown products to the public. And more recently he opened a pub called The Farmer’s Dog – which is a short trip from his farmland.

Clarkson’s Farm has been on the air since 2021 and has proved to be a surprise hit for Amazon. The show, now in it’s fourth season and with a fifth on the way, has won over TV fans who have admitted they have become unexpectedly emotional while watching the show.

The r/ClarksonsFarm Reddit page has swelled in contributors since the show began – with many fans heading there to review episodes online.

And fans have not shied away from confessing they have been moved to tears by the show. One poster admitted: “I have, like many others, only known Jeremy from Top Gear and Grand Tour, and I’ve always perceived him as this cocky character whom I also find funny of course.

“I expected him to be the same way when I started watching Clarkson’s Farm. But I am more than surprised with how big his heart is!” The fan went on to share their favourite moment from the show, a scene which many have praised as one of Clarkson’s Farm’s very best parts.

The fan adds: “He is so interested and humble (to a certain degree with Kaleb). He cares so much for the animals and even though it’s sad, I love seeing how deeply it hurts for both him and Lisa when they send them to the butchers or they die.

“He sees farming from such a wide perspective and he uses his screen time well to enlighten us non-farmers about the unknown reality of this hardcore profession in an interactive manner. I just love watching it! I just saw the episode of season three where Kaleb gets frustrated over the bad crops and how much work that goes into it. I must admit I teared up a bit.”

A sixth season is also expected to be filmed following the release of season six – although Jeremy has previously hinted the crew behind the cameras will take a long break after the fifth season before filming the sixth.

Billie Piper was ‘revealed’ as the next Doctor when the latest series ended in May – and is set to reprise her role as Rose Tyler in a new audio drama series

Billie Piper has said making Doctor Who now would be ‘completely different’ to when she first appeared on the BBC show 20 years ago.

The 42-year-old joined as Rose Tyler, the companion to Christopher Eccleston, back in 2005. She remained on the show for another series in 2006 and returned for a special cameo appearance in 2010.

Though details have yet to formally be announced, it’s thought she will be the next Doctor if a new series is made. It comes after Ncuti Gatwa’s shock exit during the finale of the latest series when his character regenerated into Billie in his final episode, which aired in May.

If she is, Billie will make history as the second female actor ever to play the Doctor. So far, Jodie Whittaker is the only female to take on the iconic role. But before that, Billie is set to reunite with former Doctor Ecclestone for a new audio drama titled The Ninth Doctor Adventures.

Speaking to Doctor Who magazine, Billie reflected on their previous time working together and said: “If we just made the Doctor Who that we made 20 years ago now, it would feel slightly disingenuous, because things were so different then, even 20 years ago, to what we’re experiencing, what we’ve seen, what we’ve been exposed to since.

“God, we were so much more positive then. People have been profoundly affected by the material they see on social media. And it’s been so normalised; everyone is a lot more heavy-hearted.”

She added: “It’s not to say that we don’t have a capacity for joy, because I think we absolutely do, but to ignore where we are right now… it’s a completely different experience.”

Instead, The Ninth Doctor Adventures audio series will feature the Doctor and Rose. Set within the timeline of their original season together from 20 years ago, fans will be treated to 12 new stories.

And it might not be long before Billie is back on TV screens. Appearing to confirm she is the new Doctor, she said in a statement last month: “It’s no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse, as I have some of my best memories there. So to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse.”

Asked if she would ever make a comeback in an interview filmed weeks before the news was officially announced, she said: “Yeah I would… I would come back. What’s funny is that I never feel like I’ve left Doctor Who, because there is this huge Doctor Who afterlife.”

She continued: “Obviously people still really want to talk about it, it’s a massive fandom, so we do conventions and we meet lots of the fans, and there’s always features. It’s always on the TV on some channel, and a new generation pick it up, so it never feels like it’s over, like it does with all the other jobs I’ve done.”

It’s been reported that the 10th Doctor, played by David Tennant, could also return to the TV show. A source told The Sun: “The BBC brought Doctor Who back in 2005 and there is talk about a possible one-off project to celebrate the 20th anniversary.

“David and Billie were a hugely popular partnership and he brought in a golden age of Doctor Who. With the anniversary of the reboot this year there have been some ideas floated about, with the thought of maybe bringing David and Billie back together for one last hurrah.

“It wouldn’t be beyond the realms of imagination for him to return with Billie as Rose for a one-off special to celebrate not only their partnership, but the anniversary of BBC bringing back Doctor Who.”
