Review: At the Forum, Nine Inch Nails conjure rage and dread. Be afraid, Americans

What a piquant moment for Nine Inch Nails to be back on the road playing their version of David Bowie’s “I’m Afraid of Americans.”

At the Forum on Thursday, for the first show of a final two-night stand of the electronic-rock band’s Peel It Back arena tour, singer Trent Reznor didn’t elaborate on the freshly resonant subtext in Bowie’s song (one that Reznor remixed for the late Brit and, in its music video, played a Travis Bickle-esque creep).

But you could feel the sold-out Forum roil with new unease at that squelching industrial song, as Reznor muttered Bowie’s scabrous lyrics about “No one needs anyone … Johnny wants p— and cars … God is an American.”

At this point, who isn’t a little afraid of Americans? Nine Inch Nails thrive in the murk of base human instinct and tech-driven dread. Who better to help us limn out these feelings of disgust, rage and desolation right now?

Now in their fourth decade as a group, Nine Inch Nails — the duo of Reznor and producer/keyboardist Atticus Ross along with a closely held touring band — does two difficult things extraordinarily well.

For 15 years, Reznor and Ross have served as Hollywood’s eminent techno-intellectuals, with a pair of Oscar wins for their film scores including the brooding lashes of David Fincher’s “The Social Network” and the yearning ambiance of Pixar’s “Soul.” They have an upcoming film-music festival, Future Ruins, that will be the first of its kind and caliber in Los Angeles.

But Thursday’s Forum show was a decadent reminder of just how nasty and violent this band can be as well.

Opening on the smaller, in-the-round B-stage, Reznor took a solo-piano run through “Right Where It Belongs,” gradually adding Ross, bassist-keyboardist Alessandro Cortini and guitarist Robin Finck into a squalling “Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now),” before finally introducing drummer Josh Freese on the calisthenic drum workout of “Wish.”

Freese was a last-minute addition to the touring band, after the group unexpectedly swapped percussionists with Foo Fighters days before Peel It Back kicked off. But Freese — an NIN veteran of the mid-2000s — has become a fan-favorite returning hero, bolstering this lineup with pure rocker muscle.

Back on the main stage, they redlined through “March of the Pigs” and seethed with fuzzbox rot on “Reptile.” They veiled the stage in gauze on “Copy of A,” casting dozens of Reznor shadows while he strutted and howled about a despondent, depersonalized modernity.

A second pass through the rave-ready B-stage gave a hint at what the band’s cryptically billed upcoming Coachella set might look like. “Nine Inch Noize” — implying an ongoing collaboration with their opener and collaborator, the German club music producer Boys Noize — took form here under a monolithic, blood-colored lightbox. Reznor, Ross and Boys Noize revved up a new single, “As Alive As You Need Me To Be” from the film “Tron: Ares,” but also revamped the eternal hit “Closer” and “Came Back Haunted” with an after-hours sizzle.

It’s impossible to imagine a single as desperately sexual, as sacrilegiously sacred as “Closer” ever making it to the Hot 100 today. For the Gen Z fans fascinated by Nails’ gothic-erotic aesthetic, it felt more transgressive than ever.

After slashed-up takes on “The Perfect Drug” and “The Hand That Feeds,” the band closed out the set with an opposing pair of songs that covered the full range of what its audience is likely going through today. How viscerally satisfying to scream “Head like a hole, black as your soul / I’d rather die than give you control” as American life seems to unravel with each passing hour.

But of course, the band closed on “Hurt.” Johnny Cash recorded his canonical version at 70, a cover now synonymous with a lion in winter starting down the grave. Just 10 years younger at 60, Reznor performed it Thursday with all the tightly coiled emotion and intimate grandeur of the kid who wrote it. American life is pain; Nine Inch Nails endures.

Woman swears after family ‘photobomb’ her magical park proposal, but trolls rage the ‘world doesn’t revolve around you’

A WOMAN has sparked fury after taking aim at a young family who “photobombed” her park proposal.

Sydney’s other half pulled out all the stops to pop the question to her in their local park, and had arranged a red runway on the grass lined with candles, with a huge heart display at the end.

He then got down on one knee to ask Sydney to be his wife, but the magical moment was delayed slightly when a group stopped at the heart to take a selfie.

While the proposal then went ahead, and Sydney happily said yes, she decided to call out the “photobombers” in a scathing video on her TikTok page.

In a green screen clip of the proposal scene, she pointed to the three people who stopped by the heart, as she said: “If you are the family right there that’s walking up to my proposal heart as I’m about to get engaged…

“And you pick up your kid and you take a selfie and take your leisurely time doing so…

“And we’re just standing there waiting, waiting patiently for you to be done.”

Sydney then stuck both of her middle fingers up at the screen and mouthed “F**k you”.

“That is so rude!” she fumed.

“You didn’t even say anything when you like…” Sydney trailed off as she failed to conceal her anger.

“Had to pause the crying to almost cuss them out lol,” she added in the video caption.

Despite her fury over the situation, the comments section of the TikTok was immediately filled with people criticising Sydney for the video.

Tom Clare and Molly Smith share special behind-the-scene clip of romantic proposal in Dubai

“First lesson in life, the world does not revolve around you,” one wrote.

“Let’s all remember we don’t own public spaces,” another insisted.

“A public park isn’t your studio,” a third pointed out.

“Well this groom is in for one hell of the rest of his life. Yikes!” someone else wrote sarcastically.

“Did they not see the signs that the world revolved around you?” another questioned.

“I totally would’ve assumed that the large display in the PUBLIC PARK was set up by the park for everyone – not just you,” someone else wrote.

How to ace a proposal

Thinking of proposing? Follow this checklist by Fabulous’ Deputy Editor Josie Griffiths to ensure a yes…

  1. Time it right – the average Brit waits between 18 months and two years to get engaged. But you might feel ready after six months, or decide to wait five plus years to pop the question. Only you truly know when the time’s right, and this isn’t a decision you want to rush. Falling in love might feel amazing but of course most relationships DON’T end in marriage – and this is for good reason…
  2. Pay attention – hopefully you haven’t reached the point yet of your frustrated partner leaving their laptop open with ‘hints’ for rings they like. Ideally you’ll want the ring to be a secret, but also something they’d happily wear – and for the rest of their life, so just a TEENY bit of pressure here. You need to be paying attention to any comments your partner makes about other people’s rings, what they do and don’t like, and what’s most important to them – size, clarity, specific details. If you’re really unsure, or if your partner hates surprises, it’s best to propose with a dummy and then buy the real thing together.
  3. Family matters – tradition dictates that you ask the dad’s permission for his daughter’s hand in marriage, but it’s not so straightforward nowadays. Maybe your partner’s closer to their step-dad, or wants her mum to walk her down the aisle, in which case you’d be better off chatting to them. Maybe they’d find it weird if you went to their parents first, in which case you could ditch the whole thing. Or perhaps they’re closer to their friends and the best idea would be letting your partner’s best mate pick the ring. These things do matter and could come back to bite you if handled in the wrong way.
  4. Plan the setting – does your partner dread being centre of attention, or are they someone who’d be gutted if you proposed at home, berating you forever for a lack of ‘effort’? Plan the place for your perfect proposal – how busy it’ll be, whether you’ll be able to get a good pic there, and other logistics around it. A proposal at the top of a mountain might sound good in theory but your girlfriend might not actually appreciate it when there’s sweat dripping down her forehead and she’s not wearing the cute dress she’d imagined for the pictures. Personally, I can’t think of anything worse than a public proposal where everyone’s waiting to hear your answer – in a group of friends, the middle of a restaurant or with an announcement at an event. So bear all of this in mind and remember, it’s meant to be about what THEY want, not you.

“Trying to be the main character in a public space is WILD,” another scathed.

But there were also those who defended Sydney.

“It takes zero time to ask if something is for the public or private,” one argued.

“The level of entitlement some of y’all have by saying it’s a public space is ridiculous.

“They clearly had to have permission to set something like this up and clearly no one else is jumping in/on the staging area.”

“So shocked by these comments!!!” someone else wrote.

“It’s just common curtesy and just a few brain cells to see a red heart and roses and know someone is about to have one of the biggest moments of their life.

“Maybe not take a picture and just stay away from that area? people in these comments for real need to get a grip.”

Wildfires rage across Spain and Portugal as record area of land burned | Climate News

Thousands of firefighters, backed by soldiers and water-bombing aircraft, have battled more than 20 major wildfires raging across western Spain, where officials say a record area of land has already been burned.

Spain and neighbouring Portugal have been particularly affected by forest fires spurred by heatwaves and drought, blamed on climate change, that have hit southern Europe.

Two firefighters were killed on Sunday – one in each country, both in road accidents – taking the death toll to two in Portugal and four in Spain.

Spain’s civil protection chief, Virginia Barcones, told public television TVE that 23 blazes were classified as “operational level two”, meaning they pose a direct threat to nearby communities.

The fires, now entering their second week, are concentrated in the western regions of Castile and Leon, Galicia, and Extremadura, where thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes.

More than 343,000 hectares (848,000 acres) of land – the equivalent of nearly half a million football pitches – have been destroyed this year in Spain, setting a new national record, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).

The previous record of 306,000 hectares (756,142 acres) was set in the same period three years ago.

Help from abroad

Spain is being helped with firefighting aircraft from France, Italy, Slovakia, and the Netherlands, while Portugal is receiving air support from Sweden and Morocco.

However, the size and severity of the fires and the intensity of the smoke were making “airborne action” difficult, Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles told TVE.

Across the border in Portugal, about 2,000 firefighters were deployed across the north and centre of the country on Monday, with about half of them concentrated in the town of Arganil.

About 216,000 hectares (533,747 acres) of land have been destroyed across Portugal since the start of the year.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said the country had endured 24 days of weather conditions of “unprecedented severity”, with high temperatures and strong winds.

“We are at war, and we must triumph in this fight,” he added.

Officials in both countries expressed hope that the weather would turn to help tackle the fires.

Spain’s meteorological agency said the heatwave, which has seen temperatures hit 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of the country, was coming to an end.

A major blaze in Turkey forced hundreds from their homes

A scorching heatwave is fuelling dozens of wildfires across parts of southern Europe, forcing thousands of people from their homes and pushing temperatures above 40C (104F).

Red heat alerts have been issued in parts of Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and the Balkans, warning of significant risks to health.

Spain’s weather service Aemet said temperatures could reach 44C (111.2F) in Seville and Cordoba, while southern Portugal could also hit 44C.

In Spain, an equestrian centre employee died after suffering severe burns in Tres Cantos, near Madrid, where winds over 70km/h (43mph) drove flames near homes, forcing hundreds to flee.

Spain: Aerial view of widespread devastation from wildfire

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez posted on X on Tuesday and said that rescue services “are working tirelessly to extinguish the fires”.

“We are at extreme risk of forest fires. Please be very cautious,” he added.

In Spain’s north-western region of Castile and Leon, almost 4,000 people were evacuated and more than 30 blazes were reported – with one threatening the Unesco-listed Las Médulas, renowned for its ancient gold mines.

Another 2,000 people were evacuated from hotels and homes near the tourist hotspot of Tarifa in the southern region of Andalusia.

Almost 1,000 soldiers were deployed to battle wildfires around the country, Spain’s national military emergency unit said on Tuesday morning.

In neighbouring Portugal, firefighters battled three large wildfires, with the most serious near Trancoso contained in the centre of the country on Tuesday.

Wildfires in Albania forced people to evacuate their homes on Monday

More than 1,300 firefighters and 14 aircraft were deployed, with Morocco sending two planes after Portuguese water bombers broke down, Reuters reported. Authorities warned southern regions could hit 44C, with the temperature not expected to dip below 25C.

One child died of heatstroke in Italy on Monday, where temperatures of 40C are expected to hit later this week. Red heat alerts were in place for 16 cities including Rome, Milan and Florence.

A four-year-old Romanian boy, who was found unconscious in a car in Sardinia was airlifted to a hospital in Rome but died due to irreversible brain damage, reportedly caused by heatstroke, medical authorities told AFP.

Almost three-quarters of France is under heat alerts , with temperatures forecast to top 36C in the Paris region and 40C in the Rhône Valley.

French Health Minister Catherine Vautrin said hospitals were braced for fallout from the country’s second heatwave in just a few weeks.

Wildfires in Montenegro destroy property near the capital Podgorica

Greece faces more than 100 wildfires, stoked by fierce winds. Mass evacuations are under way on touristic island Zakynthos and in western Achaia, where blazes have destroyed homes and businesses.

Rescue boats have been evacuating beachgoers trapped by advancing flames on Chios and authorities have requested EU waterbombers.

Turkey has brought several major fires under control, including in Canakkale and Izmir, after hundreds were evacuated and the Dardanelles Strait and Canakkale airport were closed.

In Montenegro, a soldier died and another was injured when their water tanker overturned while fighting fires near the capital Podgorica.

Wildfires in Albania forced people to evacuate their homes on Monday, while in Croatia a large fire raged in Split and was contained on Tuesday.

Parts of the UK are sweltering in its fourth heatwave of the year, with temperatures hitting 33C and amber and yellow heat health alerts in place for all of England.

Two grassfires broke out in the capital on Tuesday, one in Ealing and another in Wanstead Flats, burning more than 17 acres combined.

Scientists warn global warming is making Mediterranean summers hotter and drier, fuelling longer and more intense fire seasons.

‘Get him OUT’ rage Love Island fans as they ‘complain to Ofcom’ over ‘bullying’

LOVE Island fans have been left fuming over one hunk’s alleged “bullying” behaviour in the Mallorca villa.

Viewers of the ITV2 series – which will wrap its summer season next week – have flooded social media with messages of concern about his supposed “harassment” and insisted they will contact the broadcasting watchdog.

Returning Love Island star Blu Chegini was axed from the matchmaking show earlier in the series, yet made a recent unexpected return alongside Megan Forte Clarke.

Yet while The Sun exclusively revealed how the Irish lass had broken an unwritten show rule and discussed her time outside the show compound, Blu has been getting fans’ backs up.

The star, partnered in a friendship couple with Helena, has been accused of being “furniture” after being pied three times on his show return.

Yet now viewer complaints have escalated to his supposed “bullying” of Toni – a claim reinforced by her mother on TikTok – and as such, they have told how they are contacting Ofcom with their worries.

It came after a particularly “bitter and sarky” scene featuring the pair, which led one fan to post on X: “I’m sorry Blu is a bully! @Ofcom
will be hearing from me.”

A second quizzed: “Why is Blu in the villa???????” as a third put: “I’m reporting Blu and Meg to Ofcom for harassment. Toni wanted nothing to do with it yet they’re literally trying to force a reaction out of her for no f**king reason.”

Another urged: “Can people complain to Ofcom about Blu and Meg’s behaviour then?”

One posted: “I can’t believe it. I want to make A OFCOM COMPLAINT.”

Another concluded: “Love island why did you bring Blu back and allow him to talk to women they way is he?? HELLO????”

Programme contributors will be offered a full package of measures to ensure they remain supported prior to, during and after the filming period on the show.

He previously clashed with Toni at The Grafties and last night fans claimed he was “obsessed” with the American during a game of truths last night.

During one part of the challenge, Blu turned his board around and told the group: “This is directed at Toni really, because I’ve tried to give her my honest opinion and she didn’t take it.

“I’m not scared, I’ve tried and… Toni.”

As the Islanders burst into laughter, Toni shot back: “I still don’t care unfortunately. Sorry Blu.

“I don’t have it in me anymore.”

Blu replied: “That’s cool, I’m glad you don’t care,” as the awkward moment between them came to an end.

It’s not their first clash in the villa, and now fans were quick to claim that Blu is ‘obsessed’ with Toni.

HUGE COMEBACK

Meanwhile, there could be more potential drama for the pair after The Sun was first to report how the “entire” cast of the 2025 season will return ahead of the final.

We told how this year’s Love Island cohort will make a second entrance into the Mallorca villa.

A source told us the scenes will air on ITV2 soon and said: “The entire cast will be returning to the villa this week – just like the ‘jury’ in All Stars earlier this year.

“They’ll come face to face with the stars who dumped them, and in some cases, have slagged them off live on TV!”

Our source added of the current show twist: “It’ll be explosive and must watch TV – during All Stars Liv Hawkins spilled a secret that changed the outcome of the entire show so the cast will be VERY nervous when they realise what is about to happen!”

Terrifying Turkey wildfires rage through holiday district as 50,000 evacuated

The intensity of the Turkey wildfires has grown as the week continues, with more than 50,000 people having to flee their homes from across İzmir and surrounding provinces

(Image: Anadolu via Getty Images)

Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes as ferocious wildfires rage across Turkey.

For the past three days, forest fires whipped up by robust winds have wreaked havoc in İzmir, which sits in the west of the country in an area loved by British tourists. Those flying into the region have captured videos of the sky burning orange above the city of 2.9 million, with great plumes of smoke billowing up off the tinder-box dry countryside.

The intensity of the fires has grown as the week continues, with more than 50,000 people having to flee their homes from across İzmir and surrounding provinces.

In Sakarya, 230 people have had to leave behind two neighborhoods, while seven villages have been deserted by 609 people in Bilecik. İzmir’s Seferihisar district is the worst-impacted. There, 42,300 have had to flee an area that is made up of 80% summer houses, CNN Türk reported.

Helicopter pilots and on-the-ground firefighters are working side-by-side with teams of citizens who are determined to save as much of their land and as many of their homes as possible. They used tractors with water trailers and helicopters carrying water to douse the charred hillsides.

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı said that 342 forest fires have broken out since Friday.

Mr Yumaklı said on Monday that the blaze was fanned overnight by winds reaching 40-50 km/h in Kuyucak and Doğanbey areas of İzmir. The first fire broke out on Sunday between the districts of Seferihisar and Menderes in İzmir, spreading rapidly due to winds of up to 117 km/h, according to Governor Süleyman Elban.

Residents in the village of Ürkmez were forced to cut trees to create firebreaks and protect their homes.

On Sunday, no flights could land at or take off from Adnan Menderes Airport, which serves the coastal city of İzmir, for several hours. The airport’s departure board showed all flights due to leave on Sunday evening were either suspended or canceled.

Since then, the airport has been running as normal, with the departures and arrivals boards today showing no delays or cancellations.

The area was also hit by wildfires last year, as were many of Turkey’s other coastal areas. It is likely that this will become a more and more regular occurrence in the country, as climate change increases the irregularity of weather patterns and raises temperatures.

Turkey is not the only European country impacted by blazes this week. Right now, a sweltering ‘heat dome’ is sitting across swathes of Europe including France, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey, with forecasts from European meteorologists warning that more roasting days are on the horizon.

“Extreme heat is no longer a rare event — it has become the new normal,” declared U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres via Twitter from Seville, Spain, where the mercury was projected to soar to a blistering 42 Celsius by Monday afternoon.

Echoing his oft-repeated plea for dramatic measures to curb climate change, Guterres proclaimed: “The planet is getting hotter & more dangerous — no country is immune.”

Love Island fans rage at ‘fake’ Megan as she enjoys hideaway with Conor after row

Love Island fans were left unimpressed as Irish duo Megan and Conor went for a cosy getaway in the hideaway. Despite not being coupled up, the duo are growing closer following a sneaky kiss on the terrace while Conor’s partner Emily was away from the villa.

After returning, Emily wanted clear the air talks with her man and headed to the Snug for a chat. There, however, he told her about his kiss with Megan.

Speaking of his actions, Emily said: “That’s quite intense… I thought Megan was more into Tommy to the point where she wouldn’t have done that…”

And in an honest confession, Conor told her: “My head has been with her [Megan].” Emily replied: “I wouldn’t have cared about the kiss…the words ‘while you were away my head was with her’ pushes me out of the equation.”

Emily was left in tears

And later that evening, Conor told Emily that he and Megan will be spending the night together in the Hideaway. Megan and Conor then shared a kiss in and Conor went as far as giving Megan his bracelet.

His actions upset fans online, with one user on Twitter /X saying: “Conor didn’t care one bit about dumping Emily. She basically did it without him asking.” Another fumed: “OMG not Megan and Conor going to the hideaway MINUTES after dumping Emily and Tommy.”

While speaking to Tommy and Harry and the bathroom, Emily said: “I don’t expect anything from him, but from her [Megan], I would’ve expected more.”

The next day, Tommy and Emily caught up by the mini Firepit, as he told her: “I don’t know why I’ve been moving so closed off,” before Emily told him: “Now is your time to shine darling.”

Elsewhere, tensions in the villa have reached an all-time high as not one but two couples split after the fallout from unexpected Sleepover. Yasmin found herself hit with a difficult truth when Ben finally admits that his feelings have cooled.

After pulling his partner for a chat, Ben said directly: “I feel like we went from 0 to 100 real quick and I’m going to be taking a step back.”

The timing of Ben’s confession is particularly brutal, coming just one night after fans were left speculating about what may have happened between the two under the covers. Yasmin, unaware of his growing doubts, could be blindsided by the sudden change in tone.

Love Island continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX

Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello headlines immigrant rights benefit at Echoplex

After a weekend of raucous “No Kings” protests across the country — especially throughout Los Angeles — immigrant activists in music have a new benefit show planned for tonight in Echo Park.

Tom Morello, the guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and a longtime leftist and human rights advocate, will headline a sold-out show called “Defend L.A.” set at the Echoplex on Monday in support of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA).

The show will feature like-minded peers including B-Real of Cypress Hill, Pussy Riot, K.Flay and visual artist Shepard Fairey. The Neighborhood Kids, a rising young San Diego hip-hop group whose songs document the on-the-ground reality of communities under threat from immigration raids, will play its most prominent L.A. set to date there. Comedian George Lopez will host.

Morello joined the recent anti-ICE marches in Los Angeles, where protest signs and slogans often echoed his band’s radical-resistance lyrics and imagery. The singer-songwriter wore a guitar emblazoned with anti-ICE messaging onstage at the Boston Calling festival last month.

While downtown L.A., a site of many heated protests, had been placed under a nighttime curfew, Saturday’s “No Kings” marches were broadly peaceful, with only 38 arrests in Los Angeles, mostly for curfew violations. After the marches, the Trump administration recently announced efforts to expand immigration raids in sanctuary cities like Los Angeles.

An emergency meeting has been called among top Spanish politicians after British travellers found themselves trapped in two-hour queues and “inhuman” conditions at the start of the school holidays, before even making it through passport control.

On Monday (May 26), around 500 UK holidaymakers found themselves stuck waiting on the tarmac at Tenerife South Airport for up to 45 minutes, before disembarking to find broken-down escalators and vast lines stretching in and out of the terminal to have their passports checked.

At the airport, some travellers reported seeing four officials manning just two passport control booths. As a result, passengers were crammed into a situation described as “claustrophobic” and “third world”.

Lourdes Tourecillas, a local resident who was returning from Bristol, told Canarian Weekly that, “Some parents lifted their children onto their shoulders to stop them from suffocating,” adding, “there were no toilets, and people were visibly distressed.”

The President of Tenerife’s ruling council, Rosa Dávila, has called an emergency meeting in light of the incident, with chaos and long queues becoming a common problem at the busy airport during peak tourism periods.

Dávila called the situation “unacceptable” but blamed the situation on the continued failure to provide sufficient staff for border checks ever since the UK left the European Union.

She added: “This is a structural issue. We can’t continue to operate with the same staffing levels we had pre-Brexit.”

A major issue facing travellers on Monday was the inability of the airport’s automated checking systems to process children’s passports. This meant families having to queue with kids and baggage for hours in sweltering, lengthy, lines to kick off their holidays.

The council’s President said she had written to mainland politicians, but received no meaningful response. “There’s a serious lack of respect towards Tenerife. We’re managing essential services locally, but without state support, we’re being left to fail,” she said.

Lope Afonso, Tenerife’s Tourism Minister, warned: “This is the first impression our visitors get. After hours on a plane, they’re met with long waits and no explanation. It’s not acceptable, and it’s hurting our brand as a quality tourist destination,” he said.

“Tenerife competes globally. Other countries have adapted their systems since Brexit. Why haven’t we?”

He also had a warning for summer travellers, if mainland politicians don’t take action, saying: “We need immediate solutions to avoid this happening again, especially with the busy summer season ahead.”

First pics of homeless man ‘who stabbed stranger at Spain holiday airport in rage over PHONE’ amid rough sleeping crisis

THIS is the first photo of the homeless man arrested over a vicious random stabbing at a popular Spanish holiday airport.

The victim was stabbed “a few centimetres” from the carotid artery in his neck in the attack at Majorca’s Palma Airport – used by hundreds of thousands of Brits every year.

The Sun can reveal this picture of the 45-year-old suspect – a Salvadoran man thought to be one of the dozens of homeless people who sleep rough in the airport each night.

It shows Carlos Heriberto Beltran Perdomo being hauled into a police van to be taken to court, where he faces a likely attempted murder charge.

As of Thursday afternoon, Perdomo was under formal investigation but had not been officially charged over the assault.

Police revealed Perdomo had no fixed address after arresting him on Tuesday morning – moments after the stabbing.

They found a weapon in his pocket which they believe was the shank used in the attack.

The airport-sleeper refused to testify in court and was remanded in custody before an investigating judge on Wednesday.

Sources said they believe Perdomo lashed out while high on drugs after his mobile phone disappeared.

They say he became agitated while he was going through his belongings at the airport after getting off a bus.

The victim is Argentinian man who had gone to the airport with a friend who was collecting a relative.

He told police he was approached by a “scruffy” looking man wearing a green shirt and shorts as he returned to the carpark who asked him: “What do you know about my mobile?”

Chilling CCTV images handed to investigators show the alleged attacker walking among crowds of holidaymakers behind the stab victim.

The attack occurred amid reports about a worrying rough sleeping epidemic plaguing Spanish airports.

These concerns led to night-time restrictions being introduced at Madrid’s Barajas Airport to stop around 400 homeless people bedding down there.

Detectives said in their first comments about the Palma airport attack: “The incident happened at 10.35am on Tuesday outside the airport arrivals area next to the car park.

“A young man was stabbed in the neck and suffered a wound a few centimetres from the artery which required several stitches.

“The victim was walking with a friend towards the car park after having gone to meet a relative in arrivals when they were approached by a stranger.

“The suspect asked them about his mobile and then pounced on his victim brandishing a knife which he used to stab him in the neck.

“The young man tried to repel the attack and stop his assailant continuing to stab him, asking for help from security guards who were in the area and managed to restrain the knifeman.”

The alleged aggressor is being represented by a Majorcan based lawyer called Ivan Garcia Lopez.

Mr Lopez confirmed yesterday his client had been remanded in jail and was being investigated on suspicion of attempted murder.

He added: “I am working on trying to secure his release on bail.”

The Sun can today reveal that the arrested man was already known to Spanish police following previous detentions i including one in Ibiza last year.

He is thought to work as a chef in a Majorcan tourist resort, even though he has no fixed address.

A source close to the investigation said: “He was claiming after his arrest his mobile had disappeared after he got off a bus at the airport when he took it out for a moment to search for something in his pocket.

“It looks like the victim was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and happened to be the first person the alleged offender came across and asked about his phone.

“It was completely random. The victim could have been anyone of any nationality.”

Police requested a restraining order for the suspect, banning him from Palma Airport, before he was remanded in custody.

The request was on the basis that millions of holidaymakers use the airport facilities every day and attacks on strangers massively impact tourist security.

The suspect has not been formally charged with any crime at this stage – as is normal in Spain where charges are only laid shortly before trial.

But he has been warned he could be jailed for up to ten years if convicted of attempted murder.

Urgent action is being demanded over the homelessness situation at a number of popular Spanish airports, including the ones in Majorca and Malaga.

The problem is said to be causing not only humanitarian issues but safety and health fears too.

At Madrid’s Barajas airport more than 400 people are reportedly sleeping rough, with many going out to work or beg during the day and returning each night.

That airport also had to be fumigated last week to treat an infestation of bedbugs, fleas and cockroaches.

Labour MPs rage over election results

“It’s all depressing to be honest”. Those are the words of one Labour MP, hitherto proudly supportive of the government, as they returned to Parliament on Tuesday morning.

The anger among Labour MPs in the aftermath of the party’s local elections drubbing was striking in its breadth and depth. The evidence so far is that it did not dissipate over the long weekend.

The focus of many MPs’ rage – and it is rage – is the means-testing of the winter fuel allowance.

It is not just the view of critical MPs that this harmed Labour in the elections, but of cabinet ministers too.

Earlier Health Secretary Wes Streeting told Breakfast: “I’m not going to insult your viewers by pretending that winter fuel didn’t come up on the doorstep, of course it did, and I know that people aren’t happy about winter fuel allowance in lots of cases.”

Government sources spent Tuesday morning scotching the suggestion that a formal review of the policy is under way, and by the afternoon they were adamant.

“There will not be a change to the government’s policy,” the prime minister’s official spokesman said.

That will be a disappointment to those Labour MPs who believed that reversing the policy on winter fuel would be the clearest sign to the public that the prime minister, as he said on Friday morning, “gets it”.

Others closer to government thinking questioned whether there would be any political benefit to changing course at this stage, believing the damage has been done.

Given the categorical denial of any wiggle room on winter fuel, more topical perhaps is the debate over the government’s welfare reforms.

The changes in eligibility for Personal Independence Payment (Pip) were announced in March but require parliamentary approval. A vote in the House of Commons is likely next month.

Given Sir Keir’s colossal majority there is no prospect of the government losing that vote. But there is the possibility that it becomes the locus of broader disaffection with the government’s direction.

One Labour MP who identified winter fuel and Pip as the two key reasons for Labour’s poor showing last week said the latter was a more acute problem.

“When people were complaining about winter fuel on the doorstep you’d look at the [canvassing] sheet and often it’s people who have never voted for us or haven’t voted for us for a long time. With Pip, they were our people.”

Even those Labour MPs who are more frustrated than angry at the decline in the party’s support over the past ten months believe that Sir Keir and his team need to do more to carry their parliamentary ranks with them.

“There’s still a lot of goodwill,” one said. “But if we don’t have a sense of what the strategic direction is soon then the PLP [Parliamentary Labour Party] will become unmanageable.”

Pat McFadden, one of the most senior cabinet ministers but also the director of Labour’s successful 2024 general election campaign, will deliver a presentation to MPs about the local election results on Wednesday evening.

Questions about the party’s strategic direction will be paramount. Though the principal beneficiary of Thursday’s local elections at Labour’s expense was Reform UK, there are plenty in Labour who worry just as much about bleeding votes on their left flank to more progressive parties such as the Greens.

Many are noting that in the Runcorn and Helsby by-election the Conservative vote more than halved, at least partly due to defections to Labour to stop Reform. Meanwhile, the Green vote actually nudged upwards.

“We couldn’t squeeze the progressive vote – and we’ll need to do that at the general election,” one government source said.

Bar chart showing the results of the Runcorn and Helsby by-election with vote share for candidates with more than 1% of the vote: Reform UK 38.7% up 20.6 points, Labour 38.7% down 14.2 points, Conservative 7.2% down 8.8 points, Green Party 7.1% up 0.7 points, Lib Dem 2.9% down 2.2 points, Liberal 1.4% up 0.3 points, Independent 1.1% up 1.1 points.

Cooler heads believe that in the scenario of a general election where the most plausible prime ministers were Sir Keir or Nigel Farage, voters on the broad left would inevitably coalesce around Labour.

And whereas the next general election is as much as four years away, events over the next few weeks could help.

A UK-EU summit on May 19 is seen as an opportunity to put significant meat on the bones of the European “reset” for which the prime minister has spent much of the past year pushing.

Party strategists believe that a clear demonstration from the prime minister that he believes the UK should be more closely allied to Europe will boost progressive support.

It could also solve other problems. If the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) were to upgrade its forecasts for economic growth as a result of closer ties to the EU, then that would give Rachel Reeves more money to spend in this autumn’s Budget.

Before the EU summit, however, comes next week’s immigration white paper – which will contain more detail of the government’s plans to reduce legal migration and improve the asylum system.

This is seen in government both as a crucial way to demonstrate to sceptical voters that Labour is serious about dealing with their concerns about immigration, as well as a potentially tricky moment for the progressive segment of Labour’s coalition.

“We can’t be sheepish about this, we need to make an argument to our own people that there’s nothing progressive about letting people smugglers run the English Channel or letting cheap foreign labour undercut good wages,” one government source said.

And once the rage subsides, many in the Labour Party remember that things could be worse.

Unlike the Conservatives, confronting arguably a much deeper malaise, Labour are in government at control of the levers of power.

“Things are going to materially improve over the coming years,” a senior government source said. “There is no way through this that doesn’t involve making people feel better off.”

Gogglebox stars rage as ‘scum’ scammers prey on vulnerable 80 year old woman in care home

In uncomfortable scenes shown on last night’s episode of Gogglebox, some of the stars were upset to see a vulnerable pensioner who lives in a care home almost have her bank details stolen by unscrupulous criminals

Gogglebox viewers saw some of its stars erupt in rage as they watched a clip of a vulnerable old woman narrowly escape being scammed.

On last night’s show, Channel 4’s current batch of couch critics were shown a segment from Scam Interceptors. Hosted by Rav Wilding, he works alongside “ethical hackers” to break into scammers’ illegal call centres to try and stop their selfish and damaging actions in real time.

The BBC show saw Wilding and his team observe a conman contact a 80-year-old woman who lives in a care home. He pretended to be from Amazon, and tricked her into downloading software which allowed him to view her computer.

To gain her trust, he told her that someone was trying to buy an iPhone through her account. She naively followed instructions to log into her bank account, revealing the details to the crook in the process.

He also warned her not to tell a nurse – who was cutting up her lunch – what their call was about. Thankfully, Rav and his team leapt into action, remotely crashing the scammer’s computer and then calling the OAP to tell her of her narrow escape.

The Goggleboxxers were gnashing their teeth in rage as the scenes played out. Ronnie, who watches TV with his wife Annie in South-East London, yelled, “You scumbag!”

Sisters Amira and Amani Rota also watched on in horror, with Amira admitting she’d like to switch careers to become a scam-buster, approaching the crooks with the same menacing air as Liam Neeson in Taken.

She said: “I would say to them ‘I know your home address… I will find you,’ I would Liam Neeson that s***.” She added, “You’re going to hell.”

Hull-based Lee Riley, who watches TV from a static holiday home in Hull with his best friend Jenny Newby snarled: “You f*****.”

There’s not always such tension on Gogglebox, and in December Jenny, 66, had viewers giggling when she revealed what she’d rather do instead of the gruelling I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! eating challenges.

As Jenny and Lee sat down to watch the much-talked-about ITV series, Jenny confessed: “I don’t know if I’d sooner walk the plank or eat c**k.”
