Hawaii imposes first cruise tax

Starting next year, cruises to Hawaii are going to become a little more costly.

The Hawaii State Legislature passed a bill to increase the transient accommodations tax, which for the first time, will include cruise ship visits.

Around one million visitors arrive by cruise ship but haven’t been subject to the tax before. It is currently payable for stays at hotels and short term rentals.

The new expanded TAT bill comes into force on January 1, 2026 and is expected to generate up to %100 million annually.

Cruise lines would be charged a pro-rated fee based on the basic cruise fare and time spent in port.

Lawmakers say this makes it fairer and all visitors to Hawaii should contribute.

The TAT is collected to fund ‘natural resource management, climate-related disaster mitigation and mitigating tourism impacts on the environment.’

“The more you cultivate good environmental policy, the more likely it is we’re going to have, committed travelers to Hawaii,” said Governor Josh Green.

Cruise lines recently criticized the expansion of the tax which it calls ‘unconstitutional.’

Crystal Palace 1 Nottingham Forest 1: Visitors’ Champions League race blow as hosts close on first 50-point season ever

CRYSTAL PALACE were held to a 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

Forest travelled to South London with the hope of boosting their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

Eberechi Eze fired the hosts ahead from the spot in the 60th minute, which sparked the game into life.

The penalty was awarded after Matz Selz was judged to have fouled Tyrick Mitchell in the box.

However, the lead did not last long as Murillo’s deft flick deflected Neco Williams’ strike into the top corner only four minutes later.

Palace came closest to the next goal as Eddie Nketiah had an effort ruled out for offside while Eze struck the bar.

Despite the game running for over 100 minutes due to late stoppages, neither side could find a winner.

The draw saw Forest lose ground on their Champions League rivals.

Palace are now just four points shy of breaking the 50-point barrier in the Premier League for the first time ever.

Huge Hollywood star secretly being lined up for surprise Glastonbury set

HOLLYWOOD is coming to Somerset . . . at least if organisers get their way.

I can reveal that Oscar-nominee Timothee Chalamet is being lined up to make a surprise appearance at next month’s Glastonbury Festival.

But rather than take to the Pyramid Stage before 200,000 fans, Timothée is likely to opt for the more humble Acoustic Stage.

In stark comparison to the main stage, the tent only has space for a few thousand people.

I’m told Timothée, will perform with Bob Dylan tribute band Not Completely Unknown.

The group are billed to appear on Saturday.

Timothée has received critical acclaim for his portrayal of the music legend in Bafta-nominated 2024 film A Complete Unknown.

During the biopic Timothée is seen singing and performing some of Bob’s biggest hits himself, rather than simply miming to them. The actor had originally pre-recorded the vocals, but bosses ditched them in favour of live vocals during each take after hearing him sing on set.

Timothée said: “It was important for me to sing and play live.

“Because if I can actually do it, why should there be an element of artifice here?

“And I’m proud that we took that leap.”

He added: “To watch actors do karaoke really isn’t that interesting.”

Timothee Chalamet’s sister Pauline ‘can’t stand’ Kylie Jenner and once-close siblings now have ‘deep rift’ between them

He plays both the piano and the guitar in the hit movie, which was nominated for eight Oscars.

Earlier this year Timothée performed several Dylan songs on the popular American TV show Saturday Night Live.

As well as Dylan’s 1965 track Outlaw Blues, the actor also performed Three Angels and Tomorrow Is a Long Time.

This year’s Glastonbury festival looks set to be another vintage year with Olivia Rodrigo, The 1975 and Neil Young all set to perform headline sets.

Sir Rod Stewart will follow in the footsteps of Shania Twain, Kylie Minogue and Dolly Parton and take on the famous Legend slot on Sunday afternoon.

Seeing Timothée in action down at Worthy Farm would be epic, and if his girlfriend Kylie Jenner also makes it over to Somerset to watch him perform then we could well be looking at Glastonbury history.

THINGS are getting serious with Madonna and her toyboy partner Akeem Morris, as she threw him a lavish 29th birthday party at the weekend.

They looked loved-up in snaps shared on Instagram and he made his feelings towards the Queen of Pop clear by referring to her as “wifey.”

He wrote: “All I can say is thank you. Thank you wifey.

“It meant so much to have the people I love and respect all in one room. It was a special night, and the energy in the room was nothing but love.”

She laid on a bash in a private bar in New York, which was attended by four of her six children – David, Mercy, and twins Estere and Stella – and got YG Marley to perform a special set.

The singer, whose track Praise Jah In The Moonlight was a hit last year, is the son of The Fugees’ Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley, the son of reggae icon Bob.

Madonna wrote on Instagram: “Happy Birthday to my favorite Taurus,” to which Akeem replied: “I LOVE YOU.”

TYLA STRIPES IT UP

THE Met Gala was held in the early hours of this morning, giving celebrities the chance to wear their wackiest outfits and pass them off as high fashion.

But South African singer Tyla got in on the act early when she wore this glaring orange and black dress with a gigantic matching hat, which I’m surprised even fit inside the car she had just hopped out of.

The Water singer used the streets as her catwalk while out in New York, and she had good reason, as she has just announced that her new single, Bliss, will be out on Friday.

Tyla will be over here in August when she performs at the All Points East Festival in London in a line-up featuring Raye, Jade and Doechii.

Here’s hoping that she’s in something a bit less constricting when she takes to the stage.

EUROVISION might be as fun as pulling teeth for some people and for Norway’s act Kyle Alessandro, it really is.

Moments after completing his first rehearsal on stage in Basel on Sunday, Kyle was rushed to hospital to have one of his wisdom teeth taken out.

Referencing his song Lighter, which he will perform at next Tuesday’s first semi-final, he wrote on Instagram: “One tooth lighter.”

His team said he could barely open his mouth because he was in so much pain before the operation.

UK act Remember Monday have their first rehearsal this Thursday, but are now 14th favourites with their song What The Hell Just Happened? and given there’s 37 acts, that’s not half bad.

LADY GAGA played the most-attended gig ever by a female artist when she headlined Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach on Saturday, but that record could soon be broken.

It’s claimed Beyonce is already in talks to follow suit and play a mega show there next year.

Gaga’s concert was put on for free by the city in a bid to boost the economy, with it believed to have brought £75million to the area.

Now locals will be hoping Bey signs on the dotted line and they can see her for free too – even if it is from miles away.

I was impressed by the sheer number of people who came to Gaga’s show, but I for one know I’d have hated to have been at the back of that crowd.

MAROON 5’s Adam Levine was one lucky man, getting to work – and pose – with Blackpink‘s Lisa.

She looked amazing in a snakeskin dress in the artwork for their new collaboration Priceless, which came out on Friday and earned the band their biggest first day ever on the Spotify chart when it was streamed 2.48million times in 24 hours.

Lisa insisted a new Blackpink record is “coming soon” – their first since 2022’s Born Pink – ahead of a summer tour including two nights at Wembley Stadium.

She added: “We were in the studio a few days ago.”

DUA LIPA’s Radical Optimism world tour is yet to hit the UK, but the star is already working on her follow-up record.

The Training Season singer has spent the last few days in the studio in New York and shared snaps of her time there on Instagram.

During her time in the Big Apple, she also attended an intimate gig by Miley Cyrus, who she previously worked with on the track Prisoner – although I’m not expecting another collaboration.

Dua kicks off her tour again on Sunday in Madrid before reaching London, Liverpool and Dublin next month.

I doubt we will have any new tunes by then, but it gives me hope that there might be something to hear next year, once her global jaunt finally ends in December.

Break-ups fueling new travel trend as singles say they’ve had enough

Hostelworld chief executive Gary Morrison said the travel industry had a long period of being “closed off” to people going on trips alone but this is changing quickly

A rise in solo travellers flocking to Asian destinations for budget-friendly hostels is partly caused by break-ups and is causing a significant shift in the travel industry, according to Hostelworld’s chief.

An industry traditionally geared towards couples is in the midst of a big change. Gary Morrison believes that the travel sector has long been “closed off” to solo adventurers. He pointed out that the change is spurred by an increase in people being “solo by circumstance, not by design”, such as relocating to new cities or undergoing personal changes like ending a relationship.

“To a large extent, the travel industry has been kind of closed off to solo travellers and it doesn’t really cater to them,” Mr Morrison explained to the PA news agency. “Every single hotel room is for two people. I think, in the longer term, other parts of the travel industry will start catering to solo travellers – which is, to stop charging them for two-person rooms.”

Hostelworld, a global hostel booking platform, has also tapped into the social aspect of travel with its chat room app, introduced post-Covid pandemic. The app connects individuals who have booked into hostels at the same destination, enabling them to plan together or meet fellow travellers with similar interests.

Booking statistics from the site reveal that the share of solo travellers has increased from 57% in 2021 to 63% in 2024. Moreover, young female backpackers are now the fastest-growing demographic, driven by better chances to connect with fellow travellers and improved safety features like women-only hostel dorms.

Mr Morrison highlighted that the “vast majority” of European wanderlust is directed towards Asia, especially Thailand, lured by the affordability of hostels and lower cost of living. He conceded that this trend “obviously hurts revenues” for Hostelworld, which reported a dip in average booking values from 14.36 euros (£12.26) in 2023 to 13.21 euros (£11.28) in 2024 last month.

The CEO, whose passion for travel led him to Hostelworld, shared that the company aims to build the “world’s largest travel network”. While the chat function on their platform doesn’t directly generate income, it fosters engagement that leads to bookings as users recommend stays or make economical reservations just to use the feature.

Mr Morrison disclosed ambitious plans for Hostelworld to harness artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse booking trends and traveller chats, aiming to gain deeper insights into international travel behaviours. He also unveiled intentions to broaden the platform’s scope to include various budget-friendly accommodations beyond hostels.

The company is anticipating a “crunch” period as it invests in the new features and shifts its focus away from more expensive destinations, but this move is predicted to drive longer-term sales growth.

Spain’s ‘most beautiful’ city that rivals Barcelona and Malaga

While Barcelona and Malaga are popular tourist destinations, another Spanish city has been branded the ‘most beautiful’ in Spain and boasts a number of must-see hidden gems

Barcelona and Malaga might be hugely popular when it comes to Spanish holidays, but Seville has been crowned Spain’s ‘most beautiful city’ by those in the know. The capital of Andalusia, with around 700,000 residents, is Spain’s fourth largest city, says Seville City Guide.

Nestled along the Guadalquivir river, its rich historical tapestry has led many to hail it as “the most beautiful city of Andalusia and Spain.” The TikTok account Viento Libre, a go-to for savvy travel tips about Spain, recently showcased Seville’s splendour and its lesser-known spots in a video. The city is celebrated for its stunning architecture, deep historical roots, exuberant flamenco scene, and mouth-watering cuisine, especially its tapas.

Viento Libre recommends these top sights to visit:.

1. Plaza del Cabildo

Plaza del Cabildo is the first gem Viento Libre reveals in Seville. It’s a “peaceful semi-circular square tucked away near the cathedral” known for its “charming arches” and a “hidden antique market” that render it a “true treasure.”

Andalucia.com also notes that Plaza del Cabildo is a must-visit for its beautifully painted arches forming a semi-circular colonnade.

Complete with a fountain and palm trees, it provides a tranquil haven away from the bustling crowds.

The Andalucia tourism website reveals that this small, little-known square can be accessed by three different routes: an inconspicuous covered arcade off Avenida de la Constitución, directly opposite the cathedral’s western façade; from calle Almirantazgo, sandwiched between the Correos (Post Office) and Postigo del Aceite; and from Calle Arfe, located in the Arenal district beside the Mercado El Postigo.

On Sunday mornings, the square comes alive with a traditional market where vendors sell everything from stamps and coins to military insignia and other collectibles, as well as archaeological artefacts and minerals.

2. Palacio de las Dueñas

This breath-taking palace, constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries, serves both as the historical home of the House of Alba and a museum.

The Spanish travel TikTok account states: “Step into history with this stunning palace. Its colorful tiles, lush gardens, and aristocratic vibes will transport you to another era.”

There’s a treasure trove to be explored within its walls, including the ornate courtyards, gardens, and regal rooms detailed by Seville City Guide.

The guide also highlights the palace’s architecture, showcasing a fusion of Renaissance, Moorish, and Gothic influences.

3. Basílica de la Macarena

Viento Libre has unearthed another hidden treasure, the Basílica de la Macarena.

This vibrant neo-Baroque church, dating back to 1949, was built in homage to ‘La Virgen de la Esperanza Macarena’.

The TikTok account describes it as “home to Seville’s beloved Virgin of Hope Statue” and remarks that the basilica’s “golden altarpiece and emotional significance during Semana Santa are unforgettable.”

Seville City Guide added insights on the cherished statue, which is set amongst priceless relics above the main altar of the Basilica.

It also noted: “The surrounding neighbourhood ‘Macarena’ is the working-class district of Seville and the basilica is very popular with the locals.”

‘Run don’t walk’ to Lidl cry gardening fans as they snap up £9.99 plant that looks ‘so pretty’ all summer

SHOPPERS are running to Lidl to snap up a “pretty” plant that will give gardens a major flower boost – and it’s only £9.99.

So if you’re looking to give your outdoor space a cheap spruce up in time for summer, you’ve come to the right place.

Argyranthemum frutescens, better known as Marguerite daisies, bloom from late spring to autumn.

They can grow up to a metre tall which is ideal if you’re looking for flowers with a bigger presence in your garden.

Gardening experts at the Royal Horticultural Society say the large daisies are best placed in full sun, thrive in south–facing or west–facing gardens and grow in moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.

To get the most out of them, they recommend: “Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering and pinch growing tips to keep compact.

“Best used as a summer bedding plant. Mulching helps to conserve water. Water in prolonged dry spells.”

And bargain hunters have been left delighted after spotting them for sale in budget supermarket Lidl.

Posting on the Garden Makeover Ideas On A Budget Facebook group, which boasts 850,000 members, gardening fan Juliet said: “Lidl £9.99!

“It’s so pretty, I’d say run not walk as they won’t be there for long.”

Other shoppers have now been racing to their nearest store to bag one.

“Need a trip to Lidl”, one person said.

Alan Titchmarsh’s ‘easiest’ tip will fix bald patches on your lawn in two minutes flat this spring & no it’s not seeding

A second cried: “I saw this in Lidl’s today & wish I picked one up.”

A third wrote: “I brought 2 last year and they didn’t come back….. so I just got one this year…they are lovely.”

A fourth begged a pal: “Are you going to Lidl tomorrow?? If so yes please X2.”

Meanwhile, a fifth revealed: “My neighbour got me one from Lidl tonight as I loved her one last year, it came on really well and looked good all summer, I just planted mine in a big tub on the patio.”

Other gardening fans, however, have warned against the bargain plant after struggling to keep it alive.

One person sighed: “I got 2 about few weeks ago both pretty much dead. Enjoy it for a few weeks haha.”

“Bought one last year..it never came back this year ..won’t buy it again”, wrote somebody else.

Another disappointed person added: “Beautiful but they don’t last long.”

And a fourth claimed: “They last 5 minutes ain’t worth the pretty pound you spend on it. Unless you grow from seeds.”

UK’s filthiest beaches win Brown Flag awards in warning to daytrippers – full list

Among the offending destinations are Bognor Regis, Aldwick and Blackpool North, which were all rated ‘poor’ by the Environment Agency due to summer water quality

The grossest, filthiest, most sewage-ridden beaches in the country have been named and shamed.

In an effort to highlight England’s beaches that you might want to avoid, Holiday Park Guru has unveiled its second annual Brown Flag Awards. Using official Environment Agency water quality data to select the ‘winners’, the firm has sent out tasteful brown flags to the worst beaches, so they can warn swimmers of the nastiness lurking just beneath the surface.

Among the offending destinations are Bognor Regis, Aldwick and Blackpool North, which were all rated ‘poor’ by the Environment Agency due to summer water quality. Brown Flag beaches are those rated ‘poor’ for water quality by the Environment Agency. This is because of their levels of bacteria such as e-coli from sewage and other waste.

Some of the worst water cleanliness readings were found at beaches at popular resorts including Blackpool, Weston Super Mare and Bognor Regis. This doesn’t necessarily mean the whole beach is ‘poor’ for bathing – it is sometimes just one section of beach.

The number of brown flag beaches leapt up from 13 in 2024 to 19 in 2025. Campaigner and swimmer Robbie Lane from Holiday Park Guru said: “We had hoped that we’d be handing out fewer Brown Flags this year – but things have gone down the pan. Do your research this summer and you’ll be saying ‘wish you were here’ rather than ‘wish I’d worn a hazmat suit’.”

The water quality readings are based on readings taken in the warmer months, when people are most likely to be taking a dip. In addition, the sea is less likely to be clean in winter, as it rains more which leads to more unpleasant stuff overflowing into rivers and into the sea.

Once again, Lancashire is rock bottom of the county league table with none of its ten designated bathing spots achieving the Environment Agency’s coveted three-star ‘excellent’ rating for cleanliness. Somerset, Cumbria, Merseyside and Kent are all in the bottom half of the league table.

On the flip side of things, Northumberland ranks top, with more than 90% of its beaches being three-star stunners that achieve the highest score possible for water cleanliness. Dorset, Devon and Cornwall are also highly rated. The Isle of Wight, County Durham, Lincolnshire and Suffolk deserve praise, with all of their designated bathing areas gaining one of the top two ratings (‘good’ or ‘excellent’).

Mum warns parents planning Disney holidays to avoid saying one phrase to kids

A mum has warned parents thinking of taking their kids to Disney theme parks this year to avoid saying one phrase to their children – as it might cause a ‘meltdown’ in the hotel

Parents should avoid saying one thing to kids about Disney World (stock photo)(Image: NurPhoto via Getty Images)

If you’re thinking of surprising your children with a Disney-themed getaway this summer, you may want to heed this warning. Disney is a huge part of growing up for many children, and getting the chance to visit one of the company’s theme parks can be an unforgettable experience they remember for the rest of their lives.

But one mum has urged other parents to think carefully about how they tell their children the exciting news, as certain phrases could lead to a “meltdown” at the hotel. In a video on TikTok, the mum and travel agent told parents they should never use one common phrase, as it could give your child unrealistic expectations.

When surprising their child with a Disney trip, parents often say something like: “We’re going to see Mickey Mouse“.

But according to the travel expert, you should never say this – as it will just confuse children when they’re not greeted by the Disney mascot as soon as they get off the plane or enter the park.

She said: “When you tell your young children that you’re going to Walt Disney World, do not, under any circumstances, use the words ‘We’re going to see Mickey Mouse’. Every Disney cast member who works in a hotel lobby knows exactly where I’m going with this.

“I cannot count the number of times I have been in one of those hotel lobbies and a family with a kid who is four or five says ‘It’s time for us to go to our room’, and the kid loses it. Through tears, they scream something like: ‘You promised we were going to see Mickey’.

Content cannot be displayed without consent

“What you meant when you told them that was at some point on this vacation, you will get to meet Mickey Mouse. But what your child heard was, as soon as we get out of the car or off the plane, Mickey Mouse will be there to give me a giant hug.”

The mum said she understands why parents use the Mickey Mouse phrase, as she knows young children have “no frame of reference” for what Disney World is, so wouldn’t understand if they were told exactly where they were going.

However, she advised parents to try to get their kids excited for the things that are actually happening on that day. For example, try to make the plane journey exciting or talk about using the swimming pool at the hotel.

The travel agent also said that setting expectations like this is “especially helpful” for children with autism, as it gives them a sense of what they’re walking into ahead of time without overwhelming them with information.

She added: “By design, Disney World is an overstimulating experience, regardless of age. The more you can do to take things one step at a time and slow down the pace, the more fun everyone’s going to have.”

Commenters on the post thanked the mum for her helpful advice. Some even shared stories from their childhood about their own experience with going to a Disney park as a young child.

One person said: “Also, TELL YOUR KID YOU’RE GOING. My parents took me out of school a few days early for a Disney surprise trip when I was six. I thought we were ‘going on a trip’ just for a few hours before school. I had a meltdown in the parking lot because I read the parking sign and realised I would miss presenting my book report.”

Another added: “No, I’m still salty because my parents were going to take me to Disney World in kindergarten, but when they asked me, ‘Do you want to go see Mickey Mouse?’ I said no, so they cancelled the trip.”

What to do on Mother’s Day? Catch up with Mom on an L.A. walk

I took an out-of-state friend on this East Hollywood walk and she loved it. She had just spent 30 days hiking 250 miles on the Camino de Santiago in Spain, so she’s no newbie to walking, but she liked what I too liked best about this walk: exploring classic L.A. neighborhoods and all the different architecture and landscape styles, from basic to eye-popping.

There are fewer than 700 steps on this walk, but it still has some breathtaking climbs and drops.

1. Fleming starts this walk at the nightmare triple intersection of Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard and Hillhurst Avenue. I recommend doing anything you can to avoid that, such as parking on a nearby residential street like Rosalia Road (where I parked) or North Commonwealth Avenue, both of which connect to Sunset Drive, where we will start our walk heading east.
2. Be sure you walk on Sunset Drivenot Sunset Boulevard — toward the hills, which, yes, we are going to climb.
3. Walk past Rosalia Road and North Commonwealth Avenue on Sunset, and turn left on Hoover Street.
4. Walk two blocks up Hoover, past Clayton Avenue (jog a little to the right to stay on Hoover) and West Camero Avenue to where the street ends in front of the Hoover Walk, a double-sided staircase with a colorful and slightly graffitied mural. We had to step over a small smoldering fire of dried leaves someone started on the eighth step, but we made it to the top — 38 steps total — otherwise unscathed.
5. Now you’re on Prospect Avenue. Turn right and walk past Talmadge Avenue, with the Prospect Studios on your left. This is a historic Hollywood production facility, initially the home of Vitagraph Studios in 1915 until it was purchased by Warner Bros. in 1925, where they made many movies, including the first talkie, “The Jazz Singer.” ABC purchased the facility in 1948 and it became home to many popular television shows, including “Grey’s Anatomy.” The studio now is owned by Walt Disney Co., which acquired ABC in 1995.
6. Keep walking on Prospect past Myra and Sanborn avenues. The road will start climbing; just past 3976 Prospect, as the road curves left into a blind curve, look for your next set of stairs to the right — the Prospect Walk.
7. These stairs go up 57 steps, without handrails, to Deloz Avenue. Cross the street and continue up another 71 rail-less steps to Hollyvista Avenue. Cross that street and take a deep breath for the final stage — 168 steps up to Franklin Avenue, the top of Franklin Hills.
8. As you catch your breath at the top, look to your right to admire the lovely home with the two-masted boat etched on its chimney and yards with great succulent/cactus landscaping. Then turn left on Franklin and head downhill.
9. When the road begins turning to the right toward Radio Street, look to your left for the Radio Walk staircase. There are some lovely views here at the top of Hollywood, Century City and the Sunset Strip. But now you must begin your descent, which comes in two stages, first 127 steps back down to Hollyvista and then across the street another 97 steps down to Deloz.
10. Turn right on Deloz for just a few steps and then bear left onto Melbourne Avenue (the sign is well hidden by the surrounding trees). Follow Melbourne as it bends to the right, past the playing fields of the Lycée International de Los Angeles (a bilingual French-English K-12 school) and the Norman Harriton Community Garden of Franklin Hills on the left. There are some lovely homes through here, but note the profusion of signs warning about security cameras — a common feature on almost all of my stair walks.
11. As Melbourne curves, it becomes Sanborn Avenue, and at the end is the next step of stairs, 85 wide steps up to Franklin Avenue.
12. This is a busy three-way intersection, with lots of traffic merging onto Franklin from St. George Street directly in front of you. If you have time, take a short detour to the magical Shakespeare Bridge to your left, where you can take photos through the crazy turrets and stare down at the wild garden below, but walk carefully because the sidewalks are narrow. We opted to gaze from a distance and then continued our walk by turning right on Franklin. We crossed to be on the sidewalk, heading uphill, but the sidewalk disappeared after a few houses, so it’s back to street walking, but here, where the road curves up to the right, the traffic isn’t as fierce.
13. Bear right past 3959 heading onto Hollyvista as it winds downhill.
14. Bear right again onto Deloz, passing the Radio Walk steps on your left (unless you want a super workout, in which case you can run up the Radio Walk steps, turn right on Franklin and walk about a block, then run down the Prospect Walk steps to rejoin the walk).
15. If you opt for the sane-and-sensible route, walk straight on Deloz, up and over a small rise, past the Prospect Walk and Hollyvista.
16. When you reach Clayton Avenue, take a moment to admire the Hansel-and-Gretel-style house at the corner and then turn right, heading downhill. As the road winds down, look to the right for some great views of Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood sign, but keep an eye out for traffic since Clayton is another winding, narrow street without sidewalks.
17. Just after Clayton makes a big bend to the right, look to your left for your final staircase under a massive sprawling pine. This is a short climb of 41 steps to the cul-de-sac end of Sanborn Avenue.
18. Walk straight on Sanborn until you reach Cumberland Avenue. Turn right and walk down a very steep hill, past Myra, where the road thankfully flattens and begins a small climb for a block until you reach Talmadge Street and turn left.
19. Walk a short block on Talmadge to Sunset Drive, where you turn right and return to your car.

9 soothing L.A. foot spas for relief and relaxation

My feet ached from an epic six-mile beach walk the day beforehand. So I was especially excited to arrive at Bao Foot Spa, in Beverly Hills, and be greeted by plush massage beds, soothing bamboo screens and a trickling fountain.

My practitioner, Vincent Taing, brought me a wooden bucket filled with sloshing warm water and instructed me to lay back on the bed, my legs dangling off the edge, and soak my feet. He then administered long, slow strokes with his thumbs along the underside of my arch, draining tension from my feet.

I expected the experience to bring temporary pain relief. But to my surprise, my feet felt light and springy for several days afterward.

“Foot spas aren’t a replacement for medical attention if your feet hurt,” says David G. Armstrong, a podiatric surgeon with Keck Medicine of USC. “But they can feel great and offer real relaxation benefits.”

There’s no shortage of places to get your feet pampered in Los Angeles, from high-end nail salons and massage chains such as the Now Massage, to lavish hotel spas such as at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills (where foot massages are administered with vegan, organic, paraben-free, nut-oil-free, gluten-free and cruelty-free oil). For this piece, we sought out small, independent businesses specializing in foot massage treatments. Our list shows off the sheer variety of experiences you can treat your feet to here in L.A.

So what to expect? Most foot massages start off with a relaxing five- to 10-minute soak, followed by a massage. The soaking stage is as much for utilitarian purposes — to ensure practitioners have clean, softened feet to work with — as for relaxing ones. Often, spas will perform brief massages on other parts of your body, such as the head and neck, while your feet soak.

I stuck to 60-minute foot treatments at most places. They were all relaxing and rejuvenating in different ways. Tibetan Herbal Feet Soak, in San Gabriel, offered a sublime foot steaming followed by a soak and lengthy massage; MD Foot Massage, in Westwood, released tension in areas of my feet I didn’t even know I had; and Willow Spa’s “foot bath ritual” in Santa Monica included an indulgent soak in moisturizing coconut milk, Epsom salt, ruby red grapefruit juice and fragrant rose petals.

Many of the establishments I visited practice reflexology, a traditional Chinese massage modality. According to the ancient practice, pressure points on the feet correspond to different organs or areas of the body; gently stimulating these points is said to release blocked energy and aid corresponding body parts.

“You’re treating the entire body in some shape or form by massaging the foot,” says Malcolm B. Taw, director of UCLA’s Center for East-West Medicine in Westlake Village. “It’s beneficial for relaxation but also pain relief, sleep conditions, anxiety and even nausea related to chemotherapy.”

Whether or not you believe in the efficacy of reflexology, it feels really, really good — there are more nerve endings in the feet and hands than almost any other body part, UCLA Health podiatrist Robert K. Lee told me. So those appendages are especially responsive to massage.

Regardless of the technique, there are some unifying benefits to having your feet rubbed for an extended period of time.

“It can help promote blood circulation,” Lee says. “And of the parts of the body that are most likely to have compromised circulation, the feet are probably the area of greatest concern because they’re the furthest from the core of your body, your heart.”

Foot massages are especially helpful for those with sedentary jobs, he adds, because extensive sitting can lead to weakened, tight muscles in the feet that can, in turn, lead to injuries when walking and running.

“Massage helps to stretch out the muscles, ligaments and tendons, so they’re less tight and prone to injury,” Lee says. “We often recommend massage to treat tendonitis and plantar fasciitis in the foot. It’s both therapeutic and can also be preventative.”

USC’s Armstrong says the stress-relieving benefits of a foot massage can, for some, lower blood pressure. Manipulating the feet, he adds, also can help with range of motion around the joints of the ankle and toes. But he advises to proceed with caution, ensuring a foot soak isn’t burning hot and that your feet are dried well afterward. Also, he says those with diabetes or circulation issues should talk to their foot doctor before booking an appointment.

No matter why you go, expect deep relaxation at a foot spa. The feet bear the brunt of most of our physical activity and pampering them — even just for a few minutes — goes a long way toward overall restoration. All of the foot spas on this list proved to be truly good for the soul — and the sole.

Fashionistas race to M&S for bloat-friendly linen dress that ‘doesn’t cling’ & is ‘designed for a perfect summer’s day’

THE weather might be very up-and-down at the moment, but warmer temperatures are definitely creeping in.

So, fashionistas are getting their summer wardrobes ready – and have unearthed a bloat-friendly dress from Marks & Spencer that will be “perfect” for when mercury rises.

The M&S Collection Linen Rich V-Neck Strappy Midaxi Dress, which has spaghetti straps and a tiered skirt, is receiving rave reviews.

It is available from sizes 6 to 24 in a regular length – and some shoppers are even speculating that the British retail giant might release ‘petite’ and ‘tall’ renditions too.

One fashionista said that the linen-rich frock is “designed for the perfect summer’s day”.

They added that it is “well made in a cool fabric with pretty stitched detail”.

Another buyer reviewed: “I’m very happy with this dress as it isn’t see through.

“It has a nice feel to the material and fits well with just enough looseness, so it doesn’t cling in hot weather.

“It will be nice for my holidays on the beach.”

The dress, which is available in white, will set you back £49.50.

A blurb on it reads: “This linen-rich dress is a timeless style for sunny days.

“It’s designed in a regular fit, with a flattering v-neckline and adjustable spaghetti straps.

“The swing silhouette and tiered midaxi-length skirt create a breezy feel.”

However, you won’t be able to purchase it online for a while, so you’ll need to head to your local store to find it.

M&S has been forced to suspend online orders and freeze recruitment due to a severe cyber hack.

The upmarket high street brand was plunged into “pure chaos” last week, with staff having to use their personal devices for work.

Hottest fashion trends of 2025

Fabulous’ Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend shares the biggest trends from the high street.

The East/West Bag

Baguette bags have had a good run, after returning from the 1990s’ shoulders of Sarah Jessica Parker to modern-day fashion icons, like Hailey Bieber.

In 2025, the East/West bag is a similar but elongated shape and has long, thin straps that are easy to throw over your shoulder.

They’ve been on runway models’ arms at nearly ever designer show – think Burberry, Givenchy and Bottega Veneta – and are hitting the high street now, too.

Powder pink

Bright fuchsia pink had its day after the release of Barbie in 2023 and now the more polished and expensive-looking pale shade is taking over for 2025.

Pantone may say that it’s the year of Mocha Mousse, but the catwalks say otherwise! From Prada to Erdem, the subtle look was all over the spring/summer catwalks, worn head-to-toe or on its own.

If the sugary shade is too girly for you, then look to sharp suiting for a androgynous take on the colour.

The shell jacket

The ’80s classic is back, but with a sleek and minimal new twist for 2025.

We all know we’re likely to see rain for most of spring, so your practical coat of choice should be a cagoule jacket.

Depop revealed one of its big trend predictions for this year is retro sportswear, with surges already seen in ‘80s windbreakers’.

Seen everywhere from the stylish streets of Copenhagen to the Miu Miu catwalk, now mums who have an emergency raincoat crumpled underneath their pushchair are very much in fashion!

The turn-up jeans

While the shape of jeans remains the same for this year and barrel-legs will still be everywhere, the way we’re styling them is different.

This season, transform your wide-leg, baggy denims into turn-ups.

For this look, size doesn’t matter, so while deep turn-ups are a hit from jean trend-leaders Citizens of Humanity, a slight fold is still just as good – but only as it’s just one single fold.

Peep-toe shoe

Get your pedicures booked in sharpish, as this season your toes are the main event.

After a long hiatus, the peep-toe has been welcomed back into the fashion fold, with brands like Hermes, Miu Miu and Tory Burch showing plain and embellished footwear in this style.

From mules to pumps and clogs (yes, clogs will be around too!), there are lots of different styles that are set to sweep the high street.

Sheer blouses

See-through looks have always lived on the catwalk, but have rarely filtered into everyday life – until now.

Designers Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford loved sheer looks on their S/S ’25 catwalks and M&S even had sellout success with its black sheer pencil skirt last season.

Expect to see more sheer looks lining supermarket aisles and high street shops in the form of skirts, tops and frocks.

Employees have no idea whether hackers are still inside the M&S system, it’s been claimed.

Sources are even speculating that M&S had no plan for how to deal with a cyber attack and it could be months before it fully recovers.

“We are working day and night to manage the current cyber incident and get things back to normal for you as quickly as possible,” chief executive Stuart Machin said in a statement.

“Thank you from me and everyone at M&S for all the support you have shown us. We do not take it for granted and we are incredibly grateful.

“Our teams are doing the very best they can, and are ready to welcome you into our stores – whether you are shopping for food or for fashion, home and beauty this bank holiday weekend.

“Thank you for your support and thank you for shopping with us. We will continue to keep you updated.”

Sunseekers flock to UK seaside town nicknamed ‘God’s waiting room’

Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex has been given the nickname “God’s waiting room” because more than a third of its population are over 65, but Londoners are still moving there

A sleepy seaside town affectionately known as ‘God’s waiting room’ is catching the eye of more and more day trippers.

City dwellers eyeing a change of scenery are flocking to a picturesque seaside town on the south coast, where 34% of the inhabitants are aged 65 and above. Despite this nickname, an influx of younger professionals from the Big Smoke are not just choosing to visit Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex, but are selecting it as their new home.

One of the top draws for both locals and tourists is the picturesque Bexhill Beach, perfect for invigorating strolls along its shores. Stretching about two miles from Galley Hill in the west to the Polegrove recreation ground in the east, the beach provides stunning views over the English Channel and is a favourite spot for swimmers. It’s no wonder that Bexhill Beach ranks as one of the top local attractions on Tripadvisor.

Bexhill-on-Sea, along with neighbouring Eastbourne and Hastings, basks in more sunshine than much of the UK, enjoying an average of 1,892 hours of sun annually – nearly 500 hours above the British average.

Discover Bexhill, the local tourism guide website, proudly proclaims: “Bexhill-on-Sea is the birthplace of British motor racing, home of the De La Warr Pavilion and Guinness World Record breaker for the largest Charleston dance. Bexhill is a charming seaside town located at the heart of 1066 Country. It is a popular tourist destination, known for its scenic coastal views, historic architecture, and cultural heritage. Our town has a long history, dating back to the Norman conquest, and is home to several historic buildings and landmarks, such as the De La Warr Pavilion, a modernist building that serves as a centre for arts and culture.”

Its beaches became the first in the UK to offer mixed bathing, which was a rather bold and scandalous move at the time, and the town is officially recognised as the ‘birthplace of British Motor Racing’.

Despite its many claims to fame, the town had been somewhat neglected since its glory days – and was branded as being ‘left behind’ by the previous government. In 2023, it was announced Bexhill-on-Sea would be one of the 55 recipients of the Long-Term Plan for Towns scheme, providing it with a sizeable £20 million in endowment funds over 10 years. The initiative aimed to ’empower communities’ to ‘take control of their future’ by making long-term decisions to benefit locals. This includes reviving high streets, tackling anti-social behaviour, improving transport, and growing the local economy.

Right now there are plenty of fairly affordable homes there. Prices in Bexhill-on-Sea hover between £345,000 according to Rightmove, and £354,000 as listed on Zoopla. While this isn’t nothing, it is a fair deal cheaper than you’d find in London or nearby Brighton.

A report from the now-renamed Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has cited a 3% population bump in the town from 2011 to 2021. Those considering the London-to-Bexhill move would be in distinguished company, with past notable residents including television inventor John Logie Baird, culinary icon Fanny Cradock, legendary comedian and writer Spike Milligan, as well as Desmond Llewelyn, famed for his role as Q in the James Bond film series.

The quaint town of Bexhill-on-Sea boasts an impressive musical heritage, with none other than Bob Marley having played his first UK gig at the De La Warr Pavilion back in July 1972. The town is also steeped in motoring history; in 1902, the 8th Earl de la Warr offered up his seafront estate for the UK’s inaugural International Motor Race Meeting, held in partnership with the Automobile Club of Britain and Ireland (which later evolved into the RAC).

‘Mini Maldives’ with sandy beaches is actually in Europe and easy to get to

The sand dunes and crystal clear waters of the Maldives or Bora Bora have long been the dream destinations for many holidaymakers, but being on the other side of the world and with a reputation for luxury can leave you with a hefty bill at the end of the trip.

Brits dreaming of a slice of paradise this summer might just find what they’re looking for without needing to splash out on pricey, long-haul trips to the Caribbean or Indian Ocean. An island with equally stunning ocean views and beaches lies much closer to home.

The dreamy sand dunes and crystal clear waters reminiscent of the Maldives or Bora Bora have been the ideal getaway for countless sun-seekers, but with such destinations being halfway across the globe, not to mention their luxury tag, you could end up facing a substantial bill when the holiday ends.

But now there’s a new kid on the block catching eyes across social media, leaving many stunned to discover that paradise needn’t be at the end of a long flight. Instead, it’s waiting at the sun-drenched coasts of Fuerteventura.

This Canary Island has often been overshadowed by its more famous siblings, Tenerife and Lanzarote, but Fuerteventura is making waves with its expansive sand dunes and inviting waters, earning it the moniker “mini Maldives”.

Jetting off to this idyllic spot couldn’t be easier, with flights zipping straight from Gatwick, Luton, Manchester and various other UK hubs. Budget-friendly airlines including Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 and others service the island’s main airport, meaning more cash in your pocket to enjoy once you touch down, reports the Express.

Famed for its volcanic sands, Fuerteventura boasts 150 km of pristine white beaches and tucked-away coves. So no matter where you’re bedding down on the island, breathtaking sea views are never far away. The sudden spotlight on the island has led to a surge in viral videos and clips across social media, with hundreds of comments pouring in from holidaymakers eager for a visit.

One past visitor commented under a video: “I was there last year twice… one of the most beautiful places on Earth,” while another chimed in: “It’s a lovely place having been so many times heading back in a few days,”.

But it’s not just the breathtaking landscapes that draw crowds; the island is also a hotspot for watersports enthusiasts. Thanks to consistent Atlantic winds, thousands of windsurfers and kitesurfers flock here, providing great beachside entertainment for those sipping cocktails.

Away from the beach, the island’s towns exude Spanish allure, with quaint fishing villages dishing up delectable local seafood.

Best online casinos: Top casino sites in the UK (2025)

CLAIMING the title of the best online casino in the UK is not an easy task, especially when there are so many high-quality gambling sites doing great things.

That being said, there are plenty of UK casinos that excel in certain areas. We closely examine each one of them and check if they can stand up to our rigorous testing for responsible gambling practices, customer service, offers, banking, and of course, games.

So, with this in mind, let’s take a look at the top casinos, what they do well, and, importantly, how you can get maximum value from your time online.

Best online casino sites in the UK

A closer look at the top casino sites for UK players

What are the best online casinos for UK players? That’s a tricky question to answer because some people place more emphasis on games than promotions, while other people put payment methods top of their list.

As an industry veteran, I know that everyone is different. That’s why I put my own preferences to one side when I’m reviewing UK casino sites. I have a checklist of features that I work through to ensure everyone’s needs are met.

That’s the science. The art of reviewing online casinos is my experience. There isn’t anything I’ve not seen or tried, which is why I’m able to provide honest takes on old and new UK casinos.

If it’s cutting-edge, I’ll point it out. If it’s an industry standard, I’ll tell you. If it’s below expectations, I won’t shy away from highlighting it. In short, the following casinos have gone through rigorous tests, which is why I can confidently call them the top casino sites for UK players right now.

1. Betway

Highlights

  • Vast collection of casino games
  • In-house Wheel of Vegas slot jackpots
  • Plenty of online slots promotions

Betway has been one of the biggest brands in gambling for over a decade, but that’s not why it’s on my list. The welcome bonus caught my attention because of the wager-free element. This penchant for promotions without wagering requirements extends to existing customers, so that’s a great reason to register.

The best reason I can give you, however, is Betway’s roulette lobby. Tap the sign-up link on this page, and you’ll have access to what I think is an unbeatable selection of roulette games. As expected, the classics are well covered. Alongside European, French, and American roulette is a selection of low-stakes tables, including 20p Roulette and 10p Mini Roulette.

For those with bigger bankrolls, Live Prestige lets you wager upwards of £500 per spin. For a final flourish, Betway has dozens of novel variants and themed tables. I love Vinnie Jones Roulette because I’m a football fan, but don’t sleep on innovative offerings such as Roulette 9 Masks of Fire and Volcano Roulette.

2. Mr Vegas

Highlights

  • Vast collection of casino games
  • In-house Wheel of Vegas slot jackpots
  • Plenty of online slots promotions

I’ve called Mr Vegas the top online gambling site for slots, but I could have simply said games. All of my top picks cover the basics and more, but none come close to the 8,000+ slots and table games available at Mr Vegas.

For context, that’s approximately 8x more than the best online gambling platforms, including my current number #1, Virgin Games. Quality doesn’t always follow quantity, but in this case, it does. Mr Vegas works with an impressive list of software providers, including Yggdrasil, NetEnt, and Pragmatic Play.

This means you get access to £4 million+ progressive jackpots, feature-rich video slots such as Tanked, and almighty Megaways slots. If I’m talking about slot games, I can’t ignore Encore and Rainbow Fridays. The former allows you to socialise and compete with other slot players, while the latter gives you guaranteed wins based on the spins you’ve made during the week.

3. Duelz

Highlights

  • Generous bonuses and slot jackpots
  • Crash and arcade-style games
  • Creative software

People are often split when it comes to Duelz. Some people love the lively platform, while others see the animations as an unnecessary annoyance. I like the animated background but the sound effects (which can’t be muted) do become annoying after a while.

The virtual aspects of Duelz Casino might split the gaming community, but the live elements won’t. For me, Duelz has an impressive collection of live casino games. Blackjack, roulette, poker, and baccarat come in traditional and modern variants.

From this solid foundation, Duelz has built up a unique live games lobby. All of the latest live game shows are on display, including my favourite, Gonzo’s Treasure Map. Best of all are live casino games from OnAir Entertainment. Very few UK casino operators have partnered with this emerging software provider, which means Duelz has a unique selection of live games, including two exclusive branded roulette tables.

4. Virgin Games

Highlights

  • No wagering requirement bonuses
  • Trusted and reputable brand
  • Daily free games

Why is Virgin Games among my top picks? There are two reasons: simplicity and entertainment. In my opinion, Virgin Games is the best online casino for newbies and novices because there aren’t any unnecessary or confusing features.

Don’t get me wrong, I like innovative features. However, I’ve seen a lot of online casino developers who want to be different.  For me, the mark of a world-class casino isn’t in its aesthetics and design, it’s the products it offers.

That’s why I like Virgin Games. The software is reliable and safe. The interface is easy to navigate, and the platform isn’t overloaded with useless page elements. Removing distractions means you get instant access to over 900 games on any device.

That’s important in this context for two reasons:

1. Virgin Games not only offers slots, blackjack, roulette, and table games but a host of other options, including bingo and poker.

2. Unencumbered access to the varied games lobby makes it easier for you to enjoy the action and earn bonuses, many of which don’t have any wagering requirements!

In my view, all of these qualities make Virgin Games the best casino online for anyone who wants a pure gaming experience with plenty of added value.

5. Hot Streak Slots

Highlights

  • Excellent loyalty rewards program
  • Hundreds of high-quality slots
  • Weekly slot promotions

My next recommendation for discerning UK casino players like you is Hot Streak Slots. This platform could easily be my top pick for slots because it has more spinners than most gambling sites. However, that’s too obvious.

The reason I rate this casino so highly is its payment methods. I love the fact that you can make instant deposits and withdrawals using PayPal. I’ve been using this eWallet for the best part of a decade because, quite simply, it’s efficient and safe.

I’m saying you can’t make fast payments with Hot Streak’s other options, including Visa, MasterCard, and MuchBetter. However, if you want to keep your money online, PayPal is the ideal solution. This, combined with the fact that withdrawals are completed within 24 hours, are the reasons why it’s my preferred payment method.

6. MrQ

Highlights

  • Offers slots, table games and bingo
  • Slick mobile-focused platform
  • Instant fee-free withdrawals

No wagering bonuses are the holy grail of online gambling. They’re sought after because you get bonus credits or free spins without any ongoing financial commitment. This means you don’t need to bet any money to convert your bonus to withdrawable cash.

MrQ has more no-wagering bonus offers than basically every other UK casino site out there. The promo code POTS200 gets you a generous welcome bonus worth 200 spins. After that, you’ll be able to claim reload bonuses, free spins, and referral rewards on a daily basis.

I could carry on giving you my take on why MrQ is the best online casino for bonuses, but I don’t need to. The stats speak for themselves. In addition to awarding players more than 6.8 million free spins in 2024, MrQ gave away £3.1 million in free bonus cash.

7. Dream Vegas

Highlights

  • Daily perks
  • Exciting bonus wheel game
  • High-quality interface

Dream Vegas kicks things off with a £300 deposit match backed by 150 bonus spins. The spins part of the welcome offer excites me more than the deposit bonus, but it’s a solid package, nonetheless.

For me, the real reason Dream Vegas is one of the top UK online casinos right now is its daily deals. A lot of popular UK casino sites give you one way to get something extra on a daily basis, but very few go beyond that.

Dreams Vegas not only goes beyond the norm but, in my opinion, sets the standard. Loyalty rewards are flanked by daily perks. These mystery bonus packages are sent out via email each day and contain everything from spins and bonus bets to exclusive prizes.

You can also spin the Dream Vegas Bonus Wheel once per day. Sometimes, you’ll spin and miss, but other times, you’ll win prizes that range from small cash payments to branded underwear. Yes, it might be a novelty, but it makes things more exciting.

The final thing I’ll draw your attention to is the software. The grab-to-swipe menu has plenty of useful filters that allow you to find games based on their title, features, and developer. I’d also urge you to use the “Play a Random Game” button. Aside from forcing you to try new games, it adds another layer of excitement to the mix.

8. Mega Riches

Highlights

  • 1. More than 5,700 casino games
  • 2. WinBooster promo that offers guaranteed weekly wins
  • 3. Wheel of Riches in-house slot jackpots

Baccarat is a forgotten casino game online. Despite being the preferred choice for high rollers in places such as Las Vegas, the majority of UK online casino sites don’t cover it particularly well. Enter Mega Riches

Bringing baccarat back into the limelight like a boss, Mega Riches has more than 50 tables to choose from. The usual lineup of traditional and Dragon Tiger variants are well-represented, as are speed games. What’s impressive about Mega Riches’ baccarat lobby is the addition of “super speed” and no commission speed tables.

Rounding out the biggest baccarat lobby I’ve seen are themed games, mini tables, and bonus-payout variants. Basically, if you love baccarat, Mega Riches is the best online casino in the UK right now.

9. Luckster Casino

Highlights

  • Excellent customer care
  • Great slot bonuses
  • Plenty of £1 million slot jackpots

Luckster is great for slot players because all newbies get 100 spins alongside their first deposit bonus. I’d prefer the spins to be credited instantly, but there’s value in releasing them in five increments, namely that it puts a limit on the amount you can play.

I’m a huge advocate of responsible gaming, and this certainly helps in this regard. Something else I noted during my time using Luckster Casino is that it’s a member of GamStop. I’ve never used this service, but it’s great for people who need to cool off and limit their access to online gambling sites. Moreover, it’s another example of Luckster’s commitment to customer care.

Getting back to slots, Luckster is linked to Pragmatic Play’s Jackpot Drop network. This means you can play for a share of £2 million in random rewards every month. I’m also a fan of Luckster’s Game of the Week promotion because it gives you a way to unlock mystery bonuses by playing the latest hot slots.

10. Vegas Mobile Casino

Highlights

  • Seamless mobile payments
  • Bigger-than-average first deposit bonus
  • More than 2,500 games

It’s ironic that Vegas Mobile Casino doesn’t have an app, but that doesn’t mean it’s not capable of delivering world-class gaming on the go. I’m not a huge fan of the website’s aesthetic, but that’s a matter of personal preference. When it comes to the nuts and bolts, Vegas Mobile Casino is perfectly constructed.

Naturally, it’s optimised for use on all devices, which means you can switch effortlessly from your desktop to your mobile without installing any apps. The benefit of being able to play on any device means you’ve got instant access to over 2,500 casino games.

That’s more than most of the top mobile UK casinos. This desire to give players more is also evident in the welcome bonus. A £1,000 deposit match is massive in today’s gaming climate. The only downside is the 50x playthrough, which is slightly above the industry average of 40x.

Rounding out this impressive package is a selection of mobile-specific payment options, including Apple Pay, Payz, and Pay by Phone Bill. This, above all else, is why Vegas Mobile Casino is an ideal choice for iOS and Android users.

How we picked the best casino sites in the UK

I don’t pick online casinos at random. None of the experts here at The Sun do that. We only recommend UK casino sites we’ve tested and believe in and that rank high according to our “The Sun Factor.”

To prove my point, let’s walk you through the steps I take when reviewing UK casinos. I won’t call my process a magic formula. However, if a casino impresses in the following areas, I’ll back them to be a hit with you guys.

Casino licensing and security

If an online casino isn’t licensed by the UK Gambling Commission, it’s not legal in the UK. If that’s the case, I won’t endorse it. Not only that, but unlicensed online casinos are potentially dangerous.

So, to ensure you’re in line with UK gambling laws and not at risk in any way, I only review and recommend licensed casino sites. For me, UK online gambling licences are shortcuts. It tells me about the following things without having to check:

  • The casino’s games are fair because they’ve been tested by an independent company such as iTech Labs.
  • The casino uses the latest encryption technology to comply with data protection laws.
  • The casino offers safe and reputable payment processors, such as Visa and PayPal, to comply with UK financial laws.

Put simply, if an operator wants to be licensed by the Gambling Commission and offer its services to UK players, it has to comply with strict regulations. These regulations not only govern how gambling is conducted in the UK but mesh with other laws, such as data protection and financial security laws.

Adherence to responsible gaming standards

Online gambling operators need to care about your welfare as much as we do. Being licensed is the first and most important step in this process. Another way operators show me they care (and comply with UK gambling regulations) is by offering responsible gambling tools

Every casino site has its own tools, but the minimum standards I expect are:

  • Deposit and betting controls that allow you to limit how much you risk.
  • Session limiters and reality checks so you can control how long you’re active.
  • Timeouts and self-exclusion options so you can take breaks whenever you need them.
  • Contact details for problem gambling organisations, such as GamCare.

In addition to the above, I like operators to provide responsible gambling advice and tips via an onsite FAQ. For top marks, I love to see constant reminders sent to players via email and social media.

GAMSTOP NEWS

GAMSTOP, the UK’s national self-exclusion scheme for online gambling, has reported record registration numbers to kick off the new year.

The service experienced its highest daily sign-up figures since launching in 2018, with 415 registrations on 1 January, 413 on 2 January, and 396 on 6 January.

Best casino payment methods available

Licensed online casinos offer safe payment methods, so that’s the first thing to keep in mind.  After that, you should select a payment method based on your preferences with regard to accessibility and processing times.

The main online casino deposit and withdrawal methods to look out for are:

Best casino games

Quantity is great, but I’m looking for quality when I review online casinos. For me, quality is based on two things:

  1. Variety
  2. Game features

A varied selection of online casino games consists of something more than slots and classics such as blackjack and roulette. A casino needs the latest innovations, including live dealer games, scratchcards, crash games, and live slots, to get top marks from me.

The main types of casino games to look out for are:

  • Slots
  • Poker
  • Blackjack
  • Baccarat
  • Roulette
  • Crash games
  • Craps
  • Scratchcards
  • Live dealer table games
  • Live dealer game shows
  • Live slots
  • Bingo
  • Lotteries
  • Virtual sports betting

In terms of the games themselves, offering products from leading software providers is important to ensure you can enjoy exciting features. That’s why you want games from brands such as NetEnt, Evolution, Big Time Gaming and Pragmatic Play.

Casino welcome bonuses, ongoing promotions

Generous promotions are great from a marketing perspective because who doesn’t want a pocketful of free cash? However, the best casino bonuses are more than flashy offers.

The right bonuses can help offset negative variance. If you don’t know what that is, let’s just call it bad luck, which is something we all experience playing online casino games. Bonuses counteract bad luck because they offer guaranteed returns.

Basically, if you meet the wagering requirements (very important), you’ll be rewarded with bonuses. These requirements must be fair. This means the minimum deposit should be achievable for all players (e.g., £10), and you shouldn’t have to wager an excessive amount of money to convert bonus credits to cash (aka the playthrough target).

The best UK casino bonus offers with fair wagering requirements are:

  • Matched deposits – these offers give you bonus credit equal to the amount you deposit, e.g. if you deposit £50, you’ll receive a £50 bonus.
  • No deposit bonuses – the opposite of a deposit bonus is a no deposit bonus. Rewards are released when you perform an action that isn’t a deposit, such as completing the registration process.
  • Reload bonuses – first deposit bonuses are also known as welcome bonuses because they’re for new customers. Reload bonuses are for existing customers because you’re reloading your account.
  • Bonus free spins – you can play some of the top online slots, such as Starburst and Gonzo’s Quest, without spending a penny by using bonus spins.
  • Cashback – losses won’t sting as much with cashback bonuses because you receive rebates when luck isn’t on your side.

Mobile experience

Today, the best mobile casinos are fully-stocked native apps for iOS and Android devices.

What’s neat about the top mobile casino apps is the fact that they contain features their desktop counterparts don’t have. For example, if you download the MrQ Casino iOS app, you’ll be able to swap your alphanumeric password for Face ID logins.

In addition to enhanced security, mobile casino apps can link directly to banking apps. This facilitates seamless transactions.

What if my favourite online casino operator doesn’t offer a mobile app? Don’t worry; mobile casino sites are just as slick as their app-based counterparts. What’s more, you can create a shortcut to the mobile site on your mobile’s home screen, which makes it as accessible as an app.

Customer support

The final quality I assess during my online casino reviews is customer service. For me, a top online casino needs to offer 24/7 support via an FAQ, email and live chat. If there’s a customer support phone number as well, that’s great.

A lot of UK online casino reviews simply list the available support methods. I don’t do that. I talk to customer service agents. I record response times and score agents based on how efficient, helpful, and polite they are. The top online casino operators have customer support agents who provide swift responses in a friendly manner.

Award-winning UK casino sites

I’m not the only person who rates online casino sites. Like any other thriving industry, gambling has its own awards ceremonies. In fact, there are a variety of respected organisations dedicated to naming the top online gambling operators.

By way of patting ourselves on the back for spotting quality, we’re proud to say that almost all of our partner casinos have won awards. I don’t have time to list them all, but here are a few of the accolades our recommended casinos have won in recent years:

  • Online Casino of the Year 2024 – LeoVegas (Global Gaming awards)
  • Digital Operator of the Year 2023 – BetMGM (Global Gaming Awards)
  • Rising Star of the Year 2024 – Mr Vegas (International Gaming Awards)
  • Best Customer Service Company of the year 2023 – Casumo (International Gaming Awards)
  • Mobile Operator of the Year 2023 – LeoVegas (International Gaming Awards)
  • Online Casino Operator of the Year 2023 – VideoSlots (International Gaming Awards)
  • Casino Operator of the Year 2024 (Bronze) – LeoVegas (EGR Operator Awards)
  • Poker Operator of the Year 2023 – PokerStars (EGR Operator Awards)

Online casino operators can’t do everything on their own. Even though companies such as PartyCasino make their own games, they don’t have the resources to launch new products on a weekly basis. That’s why they partner with independent software providers.

The best online casino software providers, as voted for by industry experts, work with our partner platforms, including Duelz, MrQ, and Virgin Games. Some of the notable winners are:

  • Online Casino Supplier of the Year 2024 – Pragmatic Play (Global Gaming Awards)
  • Online Slot of the Year 2024 – Money Train 4 by Relax Gaming (Global Gaming Awards)
  • Best Provider of the Year 2023 – Pragmatic Play (AskGamblers Awards)
  • Live Casino of the Year 2024 – Pragmatic Play (International Gaming Awards)
  • Innovator of the Year 2023 – Yggdrasil (International Gaming Awards)

FAQ about casino sites in the UK

That’s just about all I’ve got to say about the top online casinos, what they offer, and how you can find the right ones for your needs. However, before I go, I need to tie up a few loose ends. So, with that being said, here are the most frequently asked questions about online gambling in the UK and the correct answers.

1. Are casino sites legal in the UK?

Online casino gambling is legal in the UK as long as the platform in question is licensed by the Gambling Commission. The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is the official governing body of all gambling matters. From horse racing and poker to sports betting and casino games, the UKGC ensures the regulations, as defined by UK gambling law, are upheld by its licences. Therefore, as long as you use a UKGC-licensed online casino, such as Virgin Games, you can be confident it’s legal and safe.

2. Can I use my credit card to play at an online casino?

No, online gambling operators haven’t been able to accept credit card deposits since 2020. The ban on credit card transactions was part of the government’s safer gambling reforms. Banning credit card deposits is designed to reduce the risk of people gambling with borrowed money. Debit card payments are still accepted at the best online casino sites, as are eWallets transactions from processors such as PayPal and Skrill.

3. What wagering requirements to expect at the best online casinos?

The top casino bonuses have a wagering requirement (aka playthrough target) of 35x or lower. You’d need to bet £350 to clear a £10 bonus with a 35x wagering requirement. Clearing a bonus means you’ve converted it from site credit to cash that can be withdrawn. Any online casino bonus with a playthrough of 35x or lower is almost always claiming if you can do it responsibly.

4. What online casino has the fastest payouts?

Duelz and Hot Streak Slots are two of the fastest payout online casinos in the UK. These popular online casinos typically process withdrawals within 1-2 days. The average payout time for UK online gambling sites is 3-5 days. Therefore, if you want your winnings in less time, it’s worth checking out Duelz and Hot Streak.

I was a check-in agent and this is how you can get a flight upgrade – but there’s a catch

During my time as a check-in agent at one of the world’s busiest airports, I saw first hand how some passengers get ‘free upgrades’. Here’s how you might be able to do it too

Want to travel in comfort? This is how to get a flight upgrade(Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Who isn’t in the mood to go on a holiday? With summer time around the corner, everyone’s looking forward to spending a relaxed, sunny, and much-deserved break away from the office. Even better for those who are jetting off abroad. Working as a check-in agent at Europe’s busiest airport and as a traveller myself, I’ve always thought that the best tip for starting a holiday on the right foot is to travel comfortably.

Check-in agents receive a lot of requests when travelling, whether it’s about baggage allowance or last-minute seat changes. But there isn’t a day without the questions about free upgrades from those going on a honeymoon, anniversary trips, or even birthdays. However, a free upgrade isn’t as easy as it sounds.

As a former check-in agent, getting a ‘free upgrade’ is not that simple(Image: Getty Images)

READ MORE: Flight hack hated by airlines can save you £228 but there’s a catch

Flying business or first class is the dream, especially on long-haul flights. But those seats can cost hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds. Not only does it affect the check in agent’s job when a free upgrade is given, but the airline also loses money. The main priority for an airline is to keep those seats available for any passengers wishing to purchase a last-minute upgrade.

However, splashing money isn’t the best solution, and you’d be better off using that as your spending money for travel, right? But if you’ve built a relationship with an airline, chances are you might be offered an upgrade.

How to get a free flight upgrade

You’ve probably seen movies where a passenger has received a free upgrade without paying for the full fare. In reality, it’s extremely rare.

Now, not only have airlines stopped providing “free” business class seats, but they’ve also started to charge passengers for the best airplane seats in economy – even for those with extra legroom. Yes, that includes the first three rows of economy, and of course, the emergency seats.

Instead of random upgrades that would affect the airline financially, airlines focus on rewarding frequent travellers through frequent flyer programs whenever seats couldn’t be sold. This is why upgrades are reserved for passengers with airline status or loyalty perks (especially on partner or codeshare flights).

Nonetheless, some airlines allow passengers seated in economy or premium economy to bid for an upgrade if there are empty seats, often at a lower price than you’d see online. Some of these airlines include Virgin Atlantic, AeroMexico, and Lufthansa.

READ MORE: ‘I was a check-in agent and this question from passengers would really annoy me’

While free upgrades are still technically possible, they are no longer common and tend to be offered in specific scenarios involving loyal customers or exceptional circumstances.

If you’re looking for an upgrade without paying its hefty price tag, focus on building loyalty with the airline and look for discounted upgrade opportunities. That be might be more achievable than just hoping for a free upgrade.

It’s also good to know that some airlines have introduced paid upgrade options, allowing passengers to secure an upgrade at a discounted rate. This usually happens at the time of booking, during online check-in, or even at the airport. And a little secret from me, you actually save a lot of money when the upgrade is purchased at the check-in desk.

These offers are given to passengers in hopes of filling empty seats, allowing them to enjoy a more comfortable premium experience without paying full price. While it’s not a “free” upgrade, it’s still a much more affordable way to enjoy the business or first-class experience.

Before I started my job as check-in agent, I thought that “it doesn’t cost anything to ask, and if you’re lucky, you might be able to get it without paying for it,” but that isn’t always the case. There’s only so much that a check-in agent can do without putting their job on the line.

However, it never hurts to ask, which is why I would encourage everyone to ask any questions or requests they’d have before checking in or boarding the plane. And who knows, the odds might be in your favour!

The UK has its own ‘Grand Canyon’ with hidden cave houses carved into the rock dating back hundreds of years

THE UK has its own ‘Grand Canyon’ that contains hidden cave houses that are carved into the rock, dating back hundreds of years.

With summer approaching, the warm weather means that you might want to look into potential staycations or fun days out.

Whereas there is one area in Staffordshire that has both amazing views and is a wildlife paradise.

It also has centuries-old homes that have been carved into the rock, but the location has until now been relatively unknown until now.

Kinver Edge in Staffordshire boasts picturesque views and is characterised by its signature soft red sandstone.

As such, the new UK hotspot shares a striking similarity to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA.

However, the unique feature of the area is the network of cavernous homes that were built into the three huge rocks.

Nanny’s Rock, Vale’s Rock, and Holy Austin are the mounts that have the intriguing feature which is fast becoming a go-to place for tourists.

According to The National Trust, the earliest record of inhabitants in these unusual dwellings dates back to 1777.

They were some of the last cave homes in England and families lived in them right up until the 1960s.

It’s located just over an hour’s drive from Birmingham’s City Centre, although Birmingham Live reports it’s roughly 45 minutes out from the city.

A resident named Bella, who lives in the city recently gushed about the location to the outlet.

She exclaimed: “The West Midlands surprisingly has more hidden gems than you think. This is Nanny’s Rock in Kinver.”

“We did a circular route following the purple arrows and taking about two hours. This took us past Nanny’s Rock and also the National Trust rock houses.

“The area that we’re exploring here is totally free, but the rock houses do cost, I think £7.50 and there’s a little café too.”

She also described the 6.4km moderate walking trail as ‘amazing’, although the one caveat is that dogs must be kept on leads.

Bella said: “The parking is great because it’s free here on Compton Road or on Kingsford Lane.”

You can get up to 50% off 500 UK attractions this summer by being ‘good’

Not-for-profit, sustainable travel company Good Journey says it is trying to change the way the world travels, one small step at a time – starting right here in the UK

In a world that’s buckling under the weight of climate change and global heating, now more than ever, it’s important to find sustainable alternatives for your lifestyle wherever possible.

One major contributor to the global climate crisis is travel — and how you travel is immeasurably important.

That’s where Good Journey comes in: this not-for-profit, sustainable travel company is trying to change the way the world travels, one small step at a time – starting from the UK.

Championing car-free leisure travel across the UK, the independent organisation founded by Nat Taplin launched in 2018, with the support of a coalition of conservation and transport organisations. Good Journey actively promotes green travel and is built on the ethos of widening sustainable visitor travel across the UK and to broaden access to culture, heritage and leisure to everyone — not just those with a car.

READ MORE: ‘I stayed at the UK’s quirkiest castle theme park and left delighted for one key reason’

The non-profit travel company is heavily promoting car-free travel in the UK (Image: Supplied)

Speaking exclusively to Mirror Travel, Good Journey’s founder and director Nat Taplin, and newly appointed CEO Louise Dando, shared the company’s story.

“We believe everyone should have access to culture, leisure and nature, without needing a car. We want every visitor attraction in the UK to welcome people by train, bus, bike, and foot and to give everyone the confidence to choose to travel car-free for their leisure time. We believe the ‘getting there’ can and should be part of the whole day-out adventure. Travelling by train or bus in the company of friends and family, or wheeling and walking can be part of the experience itself,” they told the Mirror.

According to Good Journey, around half of all CO2 emissions from tourist attractions come from visitors’ cars. Getting more visitors to arrive by bus, train, bike, or foot is therefore key to cutting those carbon emissions. The non-profit organization also hopes to open up access for the 22 percent of UK households without a car (roughly 15 million people).

In 2024, Good Journey worked towards making tourism greener in Suffolk, welcomed 10 Peak District attractions, and aided 35 National Trust properties in boosting green travel.

The Good Journey website currently features more than 500 attractions across England, Wales and Scotland that you can reach car-free, each with detailed travel instructions and a door-to-door journey planner to the point where whether walking routes have pavements or even bus shelters to take refuge if it’s raining, are pointed out. Available kid’s activities, places for shelter in case of bad weather, and views to look out for on your walk or train ride are also meticulously pointed out. The website can be used to search for discounted train tickets and quieter cycling routes as well.

Their members are made up of tourism businesses and attractions who are encouraged to offer rewards for car-free visitors, such as money off entry, a free hot drink, or discounts in the shop and café of the attraction.

“We’ve kept our costs as low as possible – starting at just £75 for the smallest attractions. There’s a 20 per cent discount if a business signs up for two years. There are also discounts available for multi-site attractions. We also offer to the businesses expert-led webinars, tips and advice to help them grow the number of visitors arriving car-free and to support them as they build their green and inclusive travel plans.”

Some of the more unusual rewards on offer by Good Journey for visitors who travel car-free include:

● A gift of seasonal produce such as flower seeds from the garden, freshly harvested apples, a plant, or a bag of flour from the watermill at Acorn Bank, Lake District

● A hygiene pack containing gloves and a balaclava for whizzing round the track at Anglia Indoor Karting, Suffolk

● A locally-sourced breakfast box delivered to the door of your shepherd hut when you stay at Romney Marsh Shepherds Huts, Kent

● A refreshing apple juice from the orchards at Norfolk’s Drove Orchards when you travel by bus

● You can watch plays at five theatres across Newcastle without paying for your transport to get there

● £50 off your stay at Rail Holiday’s restored vintage railway carriages in Cornwall

● Your choice of a second-hand book at Killerton and four books from A la Ronde, both National Trust properties in Devon

As a direct result of Good Journey’s collaborative efforts, Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire has gained 25,000 more car-free visitors in just two years. Up to 500 people a week use Good Journey to plan car-free travel to Blenheim. Visitors enjoy a 20 per cent discount when they arrive at Blenheim Palace by train, bus or bike – that’s a saving of over £8 per adult.

Another successful Good Journey collaboration has been with the National Trust. Like many other heritage organisations, the National Trust sees the vast majority of its visitors arriving by car. In 2024, the Trust ran a pilot project with Good Journey to explore how people felt about greener travel and set out on figuring out how to enable visitors to reach 34 of its properties car-free.

They created bespoke web pages for each property on the Good Journey website with detailed travel directions. National Trust staff and volunteers created trails through the grounds from the bus stop, improved walking routes, installed bike racks and provided a warm welcome (using locally sourced and recycled materials where possible). Participating properties offered worthwhile rewards for choosing to travel car-free, such as a discount on entry or a free hot drink.

The result?

There was initially no bus service to National Trust Wallington before they began trialling a free seasonal bus. In 2024, it was used by 800 people. Eight out of 10 people said it was their only way to visit. The bus stops along the route give local communities an improved service to and from Newcastle. The entry fees and visitor spend generated by the bus passengers now outweigh the cost of providing the service.

The project has also been shortlisted for the 2025 Sustainable Project of the Year Award at the Museums and Heritage Awards.

Marketing Campaigns Manager at Visit Peak District & Derbyshire, Rachel Briody said: “We’re delighted to be working with Good Journey offering memberships for local visitor attractions to highlight how easy it is to travel around the Peak District on public transport. Good Journey is a great platform which allows potential visitors to clearly plan a car free journey for their trip.”

Pretty little UK seaside village with mini railway and huge 3-mile beach

This charming village in Kent has become a big draw for British families looking for wholesome adventure. A big sandy beach with a nearby amusement park and miniature railway promises a day’s worth of fun

If your idea of the perfect day out includes seaside views, a breezy high street and fresh fish and chips, then head to this seaside town.

Located in Kent, this village has a reputation for being the place to enjoy a quintessentially British day out. Dymchurch is a small village on the coast of Romney Marsh in the southeastern corner of Kent. It’s also only about five miles from Hythe. As reported by KentLive, while Dymchurch may be less manicured than its better-known neighbour, it has an award-winning beach and all the shops and pubs you need to ensure an entertaining stay.

The district of Folkestone and Hythe are home to some of the UK’s most picturesque beaches, including Sunny Sands, Sandgate and The Warren. Dungeness beach is another popular beach in the region, found on the very edge of Romney Marsh near Dynchurch beach.

However, the Environment Agency subsequently downgraded the water quality from sufficient to poor, due to increased levels of bacteria, such as E.Coli. Following this, beachgoers were advised not to swim in the sea.

That said, the beach is still a peaceful place to lay down a blanket and spend the afternoon away from the bustle of the city and overwhelming crowds of the EU beaches. It also has all the basic beach amenities covered, including toilets and accessible parking nearby. Keep in mind though that dogs are not allowed on Dymchurch beach during the summer months.

One of the other big draws of the beach is the nearby amusement park, making Dymchurch an increasingly popular destination for families. The park is located on the beach and has rides suitable for kids of all ages.

The amusement park adds to the charm of the village, filled with classic attractions including an arcade, twisting and swinging rides, dodgems and stalls selling delicious sweet treats including soft-serve ice cream and cotton candy.

Another big draw for beachgoers are the donkey rides that are occasionally in operation. Beginning right in front of the amusement park entrance, the rides take young ones on a peaceful promenade along Dymchurch beach.

The miniature railway modelled after the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is another great way to see the area, covering 13.5 miles. First running in 1927, the ‘World’s Smallest Public Railway’ runs from the picturesque Port of Hythe, near the channel tunnel, to the National Nature Reserve in Dungeness.

There are four stations in between that are all within walking distance of a beach, making exploring the area particularly convenient. There are plenty of coastal and country walks, wildlife and flora and iconic lighthouses ready to be discovered along the journey.

If you’d prefer to stay put, Dymchurch is also growing in popularity as a caravan site. New Beach is one of the newer holiday parks sitting between Dymchurch and Hythe that promises a modern clubhouse and all-day entertainment options.

Spain will forever remain a firm favourite for holidaying Brits every year – despite the ongoing unrest over tourist saturation in key towns and cities.

Just nine miles away from the ever-popular Benidorm, Altea is a city and municipality in the Valencian community. It’s a beautiful and charming coastal town on the Costa Blanca, known for its vibrant culture, beautiful beaches and less busy than other destinations, whilst still providing Hispanic beauty.

For those still looking for a holiday that’s not too far away from home and isn’t overcrowded with tourists, this beautiful Spanish seaside city is one of the best places to visit – and the flights are cheap.

The closest airport to Altera is Alicante. In the month of May, flight prices start from £50 from Bristol, Birmingham, London Luton, Newquay, Exeter, Leeds, and Norwich. Nonetheless, prices are subject to change depending on the time of purchase, season, and demand.

According to a survey conducted by Which? Travel, it was named Spain’s best coastal destination, scoring high points for attractiveness, safety and friendliness. The site said: “Because it’s the Costa Blanca that travel snobs who deride the region don’t know, the historic, villagey one where blue-tiled church domes glitter above a hill of sugar-cube houses.”

“The one whose romantic setting – a wall of mountains on one side, the Mediterranean on the other – attracted artists, kickstarting tourism along this coast in the late 50s.”

With Altea having a 3.7 mile long coastline with pebble beaches and crystal clear waters, they added: “When day-trippers leave by late afternoon, a lucky few get to revel in a pipsqueak beach resort.”

Altea’s gastronomy is heavily influenced by its location in the Costa Blanca with fresh seafood, paella, black rice, fideua (which is similar to paella) and the Nougat of Altea being the most known dishes. Restaurants in Altea offer a range of different culinary experiences, from traditional to modern, showcasing its local flavours.
