‘Wouldn’t p*** on him if he was on fire’ – Ex-Premier League boss slams Sky Sports legend Jeff Stelling in 8-year grudge

JEFF STELLING has been torn apart by former Southampton and Wolves boss Dave Jones over an infamous Sky Sports tirade.

The long-serving ex-Soccer Saturday host let rip at Jones and demanded his resignation during a live TV broadcast in 2017.

Jones had just led Stelling’s beloved Hartlepool United to a 2-0 defeat at home to Barnet which plunged them further into relegation danger.

A furious Stelling ranted: “This is not personal but Dave Jones, for god’s sake, for the good of the club, walk now.

“Go now. This is not your level of football. If he won’t walk, sack him.

“If it means me resigning as president, I’ll do so happily. Do it now, do it today.”

Jones was dismissed shortly afterwards but Hartlepool still dropped out of the Football League weeks later.

The 69-year-old, who also had spells with Stockport, Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday, kept quiet about Stelling‘s outburst for years.

But he has now broken his silence in spectacular fashion.

Jones told Under The Cosh: “I wouldn’t p*** on him if he was on fire. I’d just walk away from him. Got no time for him.

“I think it was totally wrong, what he did. I don’t think there was one person who agreed with him. They just thought it was a disgrace.

“He doesn’t mean anything to me. He’s got a show but to do what? Not to criticise other people.

Sky Sports legend Chris Kamara talks to Sun man Justin Allen and reflects on days working with Jeff Stelling

“We can all criticise him when he was mumbling or didn’t do this or do that but what’s the point? I’m bigger than that.

“Put it this way, if we were in the desert and I drove past him, I wouldn’t pick him up.”

Stelling, who left Sky Sports in 2023, admitted that he may have ‘gone too far’ in berating Jones.

He told The Times: “I should have stopped when I said, ‘Please walk away Dave’, and not gone any further.”

He was among up to 200 players who invested with Kingsbridge Asset Management in the 1990s and 2000s.

It attracted up to £417million before failed ventures led to loss of homes and bankruptcy.

Investors were deemed to be “victims of crime” in a police investigation but are still being chased for millions in tax.

Murphy is one of 11 stars, including ex-Arsenal ace Michael Thomas, calling for more protection from tax charges.

David McKee and Kevin McMenamin, who ran Kingsbridge, denied wrongdoing on BBC’s Panorama last night.

Murphy said he feels “shame” over his involvement.

“It’s the shame, embarrassment and guilt of getting yourself in a position that you think you’re better than,” he said.

“I’ve lost four – maybe five – million, roughly.

“The financial abuse I’ve suffered has caused me monumental problems in my life.”

He added: “The financial abuse in football and the dark side of football, is something that has gone under the radar for too long.”

The ex-midfielder objected to a broadcast decision made by Sky Sports.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard was interviewed at half-time and asked to give his thoughts on the opening period whilst in the tunnel.

Whelan fumed at the change, tweeting: “🤬🤬🤬🤬 ffs… who’s signed this off bet they’ve never wore a pair of football boots.”

Sky Sports new TV deal with the Prem grants the broadcaster greater access than ever.

They will air half-time interviews with players and managers and have more access to the dressing room.

Odegaard’s interview was the first to appear on Sky Sports this season.

Premier League teams will have to allow broadcasters access to one of the new enhancements at least twice per season.

However, clubs will be able to deny access to their dressing rooms if they are losing – as outlined in Section K of the league’s latest handbook.

Clubs will also be able to have the final say on whether audio from inside the dressing room is recorded.

If access is denied then clubs will have to accommodate another request for access later in the season.

The process of adding the new enhancements has been thoroughly mapped out by the league, outlining the procedure that clubs and broadcasters will have to take.

Broadcasters must request enhanced access at least five days before the match they want it for, identifying what kind of access they would prefer.

Real Betis vs Como friendly descends into chaos with ex-Premier League ace SLAPPING opponent and punches thrown

A so-called friendly between Real Betis and Como descended into chaos after players from both sides were seen throwing punches at one another.

The Spanish and Italian clubs were playing their penultimate friendlies before the competitive season starts for them.

But Wednesday evening proved the two sides had certainly found their competitive edge in pre-season.

Cesc FabregasSerie A side won the clash 3-2, but not before trying to go 12 rounds with their rivals after a stunning brawl broke out at the end of the first half.

Former West Ham star Pablo Fornals was at the centre of the brawl as he exchanged blows with Máximo Perrone.

The rivals were seen squaring up to one another before they got involved in a shoving match.

That was abruptly ended when Fornals appeared to PUNCH Perrone, with the Argentine then trying strike the 29-year-old.

However, he was unable to do so as Betis and Como players rushed over to intervene, before many of them also ended up in grappling matches of their own while trying to diffuse the situation.

There was one unfortunately funny moment in the melee as Cucho Hernandez came flying in to try and land a punch on a rival, only to punch his own team-mate, Natan, in the face instead.

Fornals avoided being sent off despite landing the first blow, with the same lack of punishment also going to Hernandez following his attempted flying punch.

Meanwhile, former Manchester City star Perrone was not so lucky and was sent for an early shower.

In the aftermath, ex-Arsenal star Hector Bellerin tried to speak to the referee to get the situation under control.

But the Spaniard instead became more and more animated himself as he grew frustrated with the referee after he had also sent him off.

The 30-year-old was guided away from the official while still protesting, before tempers between the teams flared again by the tunnel.

Bellerin’s red card was reversed before the end of the first half.

It remains to be seen whether any retrospective punishment could be enforced.

Man Utd identify £70m ex-Premier League star as Bruno Fernandes replacement if captain leaves for Al-Hilal

RUBEN AMORIM will make a £70million swoop for Pedro Goncalves – if Bruno Fernandes heads for Saudi Arabia.

But Manchester United’s hopes of landing the Sporting Lisbon prize guy could be scuppered if the Portuguese club sell Viktor Gyokeres first.

United skipper Fernandes has until Friday to tell Al-Hilal if he is up for a move to the Middle East, and the Saudis are ready to pay £100m if they get the thumbs up.

And if Fernandes does take the plunge on a three-year deal, the cash-strapped Reds could afford Goncalves – also known as Pote – with money to spare.

Manager Amorim would still prefer to keep his captain, and insisted he was confident of doing so after United’s post-season trip to Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.

But he is equally aware that a salary of more than £1m a WEEK is hugely tempting for Fernandes.

And the Old Trafford money men know they will hit the jackpot by banking such a fee for a man who turns 31 a month into next season.

Goncalves, 26, had two years at Wolves as a teenager, but returned to Portugal without playing a game.

Amorim took him to Lisbon from Famalicao six years ago, transforming him into a more attacking midfielder who can also play wide.

Goncalves, who hit 23 goals as Sporting ended a 19-year title drought in 2021, missed five months of last season with a ruptured thigh muscle.

But he returned in April and scored in the final day victory over Vitoria which clinched the Portuguese championship again.

Goncalves is also on Aston Villa’s wish list, but United believe his relationship with Amorim puts them in pole position.

Ruben Amorim bursts out laughing when asked about Man Utd star’s future

The biggest stumbling block could arise if Arsenal or Napoli can seal an early deal for £67m-rated striker Gyokeres, as Sporting would be unwilling to cash in on two of their star men.

But the Portuguese side will land a £5m-plus jackpot if Fernandes heads to the Middle East, thanks to a clause giving them ten percent of any profit United make on their skipper.
