French Open 2025 qualifying: Heather Watson’s main draw hopes ended by Daria Saville

Momentum swung back and forth in the opening set between Watson and Saville, with the Briton rallying to a 4-2 lead after initially going a break down, only for Saville to level up.

Watson battled back from 40-0 down on serve to move within one game from the opening set, but she was unable to take her first set point.

A tie-break was confirmed by another exchange of breaks – but not before Watson initially refused to continue the match after being given a second time violation by the chair umpire.

She claimed she had been waiting for a ball to be returned to her, rather than deliberately delaying the point, but the umpire disagreed.

Saville ultimately stepped in and asked the umpire to give Watson her first serve back.

The Australian former world number 20 then dominated the tie-break and carried that momentum into the second set, quickly establishing a 3-0 lead.

Watson briefly threatened a comeback when she broke back for 3-2, but Saville was able to reset and closed out victory with another three-game streak.

Galaxy fail to end their record winless streak in draw with LAFC

Records aren’t supposed to matter in Derby matches. When you’re facing your most bitter rival, the past is just that — the past.

So it meant nothing that the defending MLS Cup champion entered Sunday’s El Tráfico winless in 13 matches while LAFC was unbeaten in six straight.

“That all becomes irrelevant,” LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo said. “Those games are kind of isolated on their own.”

Perhaps it was fitting, then, that LAFC and the Galaxy played to a 2-2 draw in front of a crowd of 23,083 at Dignity Health Sports Park.

The draw kept LAFC (6-4-4) unbeaten since April 5. For the Galaxy (0-10-4), the tie ended a five-game losing streak — their longest since 2020 — but it also extended their winless one to 14 matches, the worst start in franchise history and the worst ever for a reigning MLS champion.

LAFC’s goals came from Denis Bouanga and Nathan Ordaz, one in each half, while Marco Reus had both scores for the Galaxy.

With playmaker Riqui Puig, who hasn’t played since undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament last December, looking on, the Galaxy attacked from the start and were rewarded in the sixth minute when Reus knocked in the rebound of a Gabriel Pec shot that LAFC keeper Hugo Lloris had stopped. The goal was the second of the season for Reus and it marked just the third time in 14 MLS games that the Galaxy had scored first.

But the lead didn’t last long, with Bouanga tying the score by lining a right-footed shot from about 30 yards into the side netting at the far post in the 13th minute. The goal was Bouanga’s seventh in seven games and was one he celebrated with a trademark front flip.

Former Galaxy midfielder Mark Delgado, who got his team-leading fourth assist on the play, chose not to celebrate the goal against his old team.

LAFC went in front five minutes into the second half when a low through ball from Ryan Hollingshead split Galaxy center backs Maya Yoshida and Emiro Garces and found Ordaz cutting into the penalty area. After catching up to the ball, Ordaz used his first touch to lift a left-footed shot by Galaxy keeper John McCarthy for his third goal of the season and the second in three starts.

The Galaxy appeared to even the game on a brilliant counterattack goal from Pec in the 78th minute, but after a long video review referee Drew Fischer ruled Pec was offside.

The Galaxy refused to quit and were rewarded when Reus chipped in a free kick from just outside the box in the 87th minute, giving the Galaxy their first point in a month — a point McCarthy saved with a brilliant goal-line stop of Hollingshead’s back-heel try deep in stoppage time.

Merino scores then sees red as Arsenal come back to draw 2-2 at Liverpool | Football News

Arsenal earn a draw at Liverpool, recovering from being 2-0 down, but are yet to secure Champions League qualification.

Arsenal gave champions Liverpool a reminder of why they were the only team to challenge them in their romp to English football’s Premier League title as they hit back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Anfield.

Liverpool were dominant in the first half on Sunday, with a header by Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz’s tap-in in the space of 90 seconds putting them 2-0 ahead.

Arsenal looked deflated after being knocked out of the Champions League semifinals in midweek, but mustered an admirable response after the break, with Gabriel Martinelli’s header reducing the arrears just after half-time.

Mikel Merino then headed in a rebound to make it 2-2 in the 70th minute after Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard’s piledriver was pushed against the woodwork by goalkeeper Alisson.

Merino was sent off nine minutes later for a lunging tackle on Dominik Szoboszlai, but the 10-man visitors clung on for a point and almost won it as Odegaard sent a shot just wide of the post deep in stoppage time.

Liverpool also thought they had won it at the death when Andy Robertson fired in from close range, but the goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.

Arne Slot’s side, who wrapped up their record-equalling 20th English title two weeks ago, have 83 points from 36 games, with Arsenal second on 68 and still not guaranteed a top-five finish that would ensure Champions League football next season.

Apart from Arsenal’s comeback, the other main talking point from an entertaining tussle was a decidedly mixed reaction to Trent Alexander-Arnold when he came off the bench.

Liverpool’s right back, who announced this week that he would leave at the end of the season, was booed by a large number of fans angry at his decision to leave on a free transfer.

While that put something of a dampener on the day, Liverpool had been buoyant in the first half as they looked determined to lay down a marker for next season.

Arsenal were caught napping in the 20th minute when Robertson was given far too much space to measure his cross, and the unmarked Gakpo headed past David Raya.

Soon afterwards, it was 2-0 as Szoboszlai raced on to a through ball and calmly set up Diaz to score.

Diaz had earlier been denied by a great save from Raya and also failed to make contact with another good effort while Raya also tipped a Curtis Jones effort around the post.

Arsenal were not about to roll over, though, and Martinelli glanced in Leandro Trossard’s cross as the visitors turned the tables after half-time with Liverpool switching off.

While Mikel Arteta’s league campaign has tailed off badly, allowing Liverpool to ease to the title, they showed spirit and were rewarded as Merino earned them a deserved point.

Elsewhere in the Premier League on Sunday, a 2-0 win for Newcastle United over top-five rivals Chelsea moved the Magpies closer to a return to the Champions League next season.

With just two rounds of the season to go, Eddie Howe’s team leapfrogged Manchester City and are up to third in the standings.

But Nottingham Forest’s Champions League chances were hit by a 2-2 draw against relegated Leicester that appeared to spark an angry reaction from owner Evangelos Marinakis towards manager Nuno Espirito Santo in an on-field exchange after the match.

Europa League finalists Manchester United and Tottenham maintained their woeful domestic form – both losing 2-0 at home, to West Ham and Crystal Palace, respectively.

All-Ireland SFC draw: Beaten Ulster finalists face ‘Group of Death’ in Sam Maguire series

This year’s beaten Ulster SFC finalists – Armagh or Donegal – will drop into the so-called ‘Group of Death’ in the All-Ireland series.

The losers of the Ulster final on 10 May will be placed into Group Four alongside the beaten Connacht finalists – either Galway or Mayo – as well as Dublin and Derry.

“Can I be the first to call it the ‘Group of Death’, please?” said GAA Director of Player, Club and Games Administration Feargal McGill during Wednesday’s draw.

The Ulster champions will drop into Group One with the winners of Sunday’s Connacht final between Galway and Mayo, Tyrone and Cavan.

On paper, Group Four certainly looks to be the toughest with all eight potential teams having reached last year’s knockout rounds.

Derry and Dublin are guaranteed to be a part of it with both counties hoping to rebound from disappointing provincial campaigns.

Derry lost to Donegal in the Ulster preliminary round, while Dublin were stunned by Meath in last weekend’s Leinster semi-final in Portlaoise, setting up a first Leinster final without the Dubs since 2010.

The first round of Sam Maguire games will be played on the weekend of 17/18 May, with the Connacht and Munster finalists among those in action.

The Ulster and Leinster finalists will begin their campaigns the following week.

Armagh are hoping to retain their All-Ireland title after winning Gaelic football’s biggest prize for the second time last summer.

Having lost last year’s Ulster final to Donegal on penalties, the Orchard County navigated their way through a Group of Death that contained Galway, Derry and Westmeath before beating Roscommon, Kerry and Galway in the knockout rounds to lift Sam.

Down, who earned a spot in the Sam Maguire series by winning last year’s Tailteann Cup, will face the Leinster winners, the Munster runners-up and Monaghan in Group Three.

In the Tailteann Cup, Antrim will face 2022 winners Westmeath, Limerick and London, while Fermanagh will take on Wexford, Carlow and Longford.

Antrim, who were relegated to Division Four before losing their Ulster quarter-final to Armagh, have reached the Tailteann Cup semi-finals in each of the past two seasons.

All-Ireland SFC

Group One: Armagh/Donegal winners, Galway/Mayo losers, Tyrone, Cavan

Group Two: Kerry/Clare winners, Louth/Meath losers, Roscommon, Cork

Group Three: Louth/Meath winners, Kerry/Clare losers, Monaghan, Down

Group Four: Galway/Mayo winners, Armagh/Donegal losers, Dublin, Derry

Tailteann Cup

Group One: Kildare, Sligo, Leitrim, Tipperary

Group Two: Offaly, Laois, Wicklow, Waterford

Group Three: Westmeath, Limerick, Antrim, London

Group Four: Fermanagh, Wexford, Carlow, Longford

Denis Bouanga scores twice to rally LAFC to draw with St. Louis

Denis Bouanga scored two goals in the second half, including the equalizer in stoppage time, to rally LAFC to a 2-2 draw on Sunday after St. Louis City had taken the lead in the 89th minute on a shorthanded goal by Joakim Nilsson.

Nilsson’s first goal of the season and the second of the defender’s career put St. Louis City (2-4-4) in position to beat LAFC (4-4-2) for the first time in five tries.

But Bouanga, a 20-goal scorer in each of the past two seasons, found the net unassisted in the fifth minute of extra time to help LAFC improve to 3-0-2 against St. Louis City. It was his fourth goal this season.

Bouanga tied it 1-1 in the 70th minute but had Ben Lundt turn away his penalty kick five minutes later with a chance for the lead.

Cedric Teuchert ended a scoreless match when he scored seven minutes into the second half. Teuchert has seven goals in 19 career appearances with the club.

St. Louis City had to play a man down from the 83rd minute on after Alfredo Morales was tagged with two yellow cards in the second half.

Hugo Lloris totaled four saves in goal for LAFC.

Lundt stopped seven shots for St. Louis City. Lundt had four saves and Lloris one in the scoreless first half.

St. Louis City travels to play the Seattle Sounders on Saturday. LAFC will host the Houston Dynamo on Saturday.
