Blue Origin NS-31 – which had the likes of Katy Perry, Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez onboard – launched into space earlier this week and a Storm Huntley viewers has since reacted
Viewers were left in hysterics over a call-in on Channel 5‘s Storm Huntley show this week. Attention turned to the controversial Blue Origin’s sub-orbital spaceflight, which has continued to make headlines since the event just days ago.
Katy Perry, Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez were among those onboard Blue Origin NS-31 which launched into space from its base site in the US on Monday. The 11 minute flight on the rocket – operated by Jeff Bezos‘ company Blue Origin – has attracted much attention in recent days.
It was a topic of conversation on Storm Huntley’s talk show yesterday, with stand-in host Matt Allwright, 55, leading discussion about the space mission. The segment in the recent episode involved a call-in from viewer Yvonne, who expressed disappointment over the rocket’s shape.
She complained on the show that it had been “especially phallic”. She told presenter Matt: “The most upsetting thing, I think, is the shape of the rocket. It was obviously phallic and I found it self-indulgent and disgusting, quite honestly.”
Matt – who’s covering for host Storm while she’s on maternity leave – suggested that it will have been considered “the best shape” for the mission itself. He responded: “Is that … I mean, surely, they would work out the best shape for space flight, Yvonne. It wouldn’t be all with that thought in their head otherwise it wouldn’t work. It wouldn’t fly.”
Yvonne reacted: “I’ve never seen a rocket shaped like this before.” Matt however questioned: “I mean they’re all kind of phallic to a certain extent, aren’t they?” Further sharing her thoughts, the caller responded: “This is especially phallic.”
The segment has since prompted reaction on social media platforms, with clips circulating on the likes of X and TikTok. A number of viewers have shared their amusement over it, whilst some have supported Yvonne about the shape.
One person wrote on TikTok: “This is one of the most hilarious call ins I’ve ever seen.” Another said: “Hahahaha Thanks for making me laugh hahaha.” A third said about Matt: “How’s he even keeping a straight face, I wouldn’t.”
Someone else commented recently: “Hilarious.” Sharing their thoughts, one person wrote: “I cannot stop laughing.” Another fan teased in their response: “I wouldn’t say the shape was upsetting. It was quite amusing actually.” Whilst someone said: “What a strange thing to take offence over.”
And in a post on X, one person wrote: “Yvonne, I am sorry to tell you that most rockets are phallic shaped. Mind out of the gutter.” Someone else reacted on the platform earlier this week: “People will literally complain about anything.”
One person responded “bonkers”. Whilst another person said alongside laughing emojis: “Please stop it Yvonne! My sides hurt!! I can’t breathe…. Oh Yvonne I love you!”
Not everyone disagreed with Yvonne though. One person wrote in a response to the clip: “Didn’t cross my mind but now I see it.” Someone else commented recently: “To be fair, I think she’s got a point. All rockets are indeed phallic of course, but this one does look like it’s got a b*** *nd.”
Another person commented: “She ain’t wrong.” Sharing their thoughts, another viewer reacted to a clip of the segment on social media recently: “The lady is right.”
